Summer Renewal and Beyond with Aveeno

Summer Renewal and Beyond with Aveeno

There's some excitement around my home the last few weeks. Why? Because the weather is finally consistently warm and sunny! While we didn't have a bad winter this year in Michigan, it has felt like the process of really warming up and keeping away the overcast gloom has taken a bit longer than usual. I've been sharing a few of my product picks for the spring time, but it's time to share some great picks for the summer!

This summer will have a lot more outdoor time for my family than ever before, and a lot of that will be spent swimming. While pool time as a mom of two little girls is pretty different than pool time of about 6 years ago, I do still like to look a little cute! I have some product picks to help me look my best and recover from my time in the sun.

The Best Drugstore Skin Savers

The Best Drugstore Skin Savers

Yesterday I posted about my favorite skin saving products for Makeup Wars. Except, I had a problem. There were a lot of skin issues I wanted to cover, and I had a lot of products that I've loved over the years for those issues! I split the post into high end (yesterday) and drugstore (today). These are products that I've tried and had great results with, and recommend to friends, family and people who email me with questions!

Pimples

1. Neutrogena Clear Pore Cleanser/Mask: I love that this is both a cleanser and a mask. It pulls some stuff out of your pores, feels cooling, exfoliates... It's a great multi-tasker and I've had a few dermatologists recommend it to me recently for Babble posts.

2. Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10: Persa-Gel is what I was taught to recommend as a spot treatment in all of my peds training. Yes, general pediatricians treat a lot of acne. And it turns out there's a reason they recommend this stuff, it really does get in there and work. You need to use it with caution, it will bleach fabrics (hello, new duvet cover!) and it can dry out your face and make it more sensitive to the sun.

Clogged Pores

3. Alba Botanica Hawaiian Facial Mask, Pore-fecting Papaya Enzyme: Another fun mask. It has a lot of fruit extracts and really clears stuff out of pores while exfoliating your skin. Definitely the answer to dull, clogged up skin.

4. Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque: When I want to really suck things out of my pores, this is what I reach for. It can feel a bit tight/hurt when it dries, so use in moderation.

Dry Skin

5. L'Oreal Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Glow Renewal Facial Oil: This is the L'Oreal dupe of the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate. The oils are different, but they work the same way, except this one feels a little bit heavier on my skin. Super glowy results!

6. Boots No7 Beautiful Skin Hydration Mask: This is a great mask for when you want to pamper your skin and include a hydrating mask in your at home facial. It does really hydrate and plump up the skin, but it doesn't seem to be "too much" resulting in shine or blemishes.

Chapped Lips

7. Aquaphor Lip Repair Ointment: This is super hydrating and gentle on lips that are already irritated. I like to use it in the morning when I apply my moisturizer, it helps prep my lips for lippies later on.

Irritated Skin

8. Derma-e Soothing Facial Treatment Oil (see my review of Derma-e Facial Oils): This hydrates but also calms down irritate skin. I actually use it pretty frequently on my hands for eczema flares. My eczema doesn't like the anti-bacterial foam we use in my ICU, so after a few days at work I can start to get rashy. If I apply a few drops of this at night to the back of my hands, then all is well with the world.

Dark Spots

9. Aveeno Positively Radiant Tone Corrector: Rather than working with hydroquinone, this targeted treatment uses Soy and increases cell turnover with a retinoid (not pregnancy safe).

Puffy Eyes

10. Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller: This is somehow the only eye product that I've ever used and really seen an immediate difference in my puffy eyes. I use it when I'm having allergy issues (again, not pregnancy safe).

Wrinkles

11. RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream and 12. RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Night Cream are both retinoid creams, but they've altered the release of the retinoid, so it is slower. You'll get more results and less irritation that way. Did you notice I didn't have a high end retinoid product to recommend yesterday? That's because these ones are much better than any I've used that are more expensive. Buy the RoC. (Again, not pregnancy safe.)

My Favorite Summer Sunscreens

The best sunscreens

Now that summer is "officially" here, it's time for the Makeup Wars crew to share our favorite sunscreen products with you. If you read my blog regularly you know that sunscreen is a product I adore, and I love to go on and on (and on) about how to use it, what to look for when buying it, and how to avoid common mistakes when using sunscreen.

Today I'm finally sharing my tips for reapplying sunscreen over makeup, so it might make more sense to head over to that post first if you haven't read it yet. I have a whole system for sunscreen use (and really, the post is only about what I use on my face, I haven't even discussed body sunscreens or lip balms).

In this post I'm going to quickly look at the different types of sunscreens I mentioned in my sunscreen reapplication post, and then share some info on each of the individual products.

How to Reapply Sunscreen (While Wearing Makeup)

How to Reapply Sunscreen, While Wearing Makeup

Since today is "Our Favorite Sunscreen" day for Makeup Wars, I thought this would be a great day to finally publish my post on how to reapply your sunscreen even if you are wearing makeup. I'll be discussing a lot of products in this post, but note that ALL of the sunscreens I'm mentioning here will be in my Favorite Sunscreens post for Makeup Wars, including information on their UV range coverage.

If you've been reading my sunscreen posts, then you know that it is recommended that you use at least SPF 30, broad spectrum UV coverage (harder to find than you think), apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to your body and 1 teaspoon to your face, and reapply every 2 hours while out in the sun. The reapplication is because we all sweat, so the sunscreen leaves the area you applied it (ever sweat sunscreen into your eyes?), or the sun inactivates your sunscreen (with chemical sunscreens this is by design, the inactivation happens when the sunscreen absorbs that UV energy). So, reapply every 2 hours in the sun.

But.... how do you reapply every 2 hours while wearing makeup? That's the big question. It definitely changes how I do my makeup, which products I'll use and overall my makeup strategy for the day. I've been getting a lot of readers wanting to know how I do it.

Depending on what I'm doing in a particular day, I change my sunscreen strategy. Note that everything in this post applies to sunscreen on my face only.

how to wear sunscreen every day
For a typical day, I do not reapply my sunscreen. These are days that I'm in the car, running to work or around town for errands. Otherwise I'm inside, not even near a window (yes, UVA rays can penetrate windows, did you ever see that picture of a truck driver?) so I don't really have much sun exposure and certainly not enough to need reapplication.

I do have enough sun exposure that I think I need to wear sunscreen every day. It needs to be in a product that I apply all over my face and in a high enough quantity to actually get the UV coverage I need. Which means that it can't be in makeup (especially not in powder, I don't want to apply 1.2g to my face), and I don't even apply tinted BB cream all over my face enough so that it counts. I usually take a light SPF lotion (I've been using Kiehl's Ultra Facial Lotion SPF 30 and I haven't tried the new version yet) and I apply that to my neck and face. If I'm using a BB cream with SPF I'll either go light in the center of my face or completely skip that area. I do make sure to hit the outside of my face along my hair line and jaw line, places where I don't usually apply the BB Cream. If I'm going with a more traditional foundation then I definitely apply the lotion every where.

Sunscreen strategies for makeup reapplication
On days that I'm planning to spend more time outside, I take a different strategy with my sunscreen products and makeup. This is something that I plan ahead for, and if there's even just a chance that I'll be spending more than 45 minutes or so outside (especially if that's during peak sun hours of 10 am - 2 pm) then I'll go with this strategy. Note that these days are not meant to be waterproof or sweatproof, so this is great for a few hours playing outside with my daughter, but I wouldn't follow these strategies for a day at the beach or a theme park.

I start with my SPF lotion and/or BB Cream. Much like on a normal day, I make sure my entire neck and face are covered by either the SPF lotion or the BB Cream, so I have a base of SPF. If I'm anticipating that I'll be spending more than a few hours outside, I'll go the extra step of adding a second SPF on top of this, underneath my makeup. I go for something lightweight with a good SPF like Kiehl's Super Fluid UV Defense or La Roche Anthelios. I then apply makeup over this lotion/SPF base.

Makeup to wear with sunscreen
Once I'm ready to apply makeup, I go for makeup that can stand up to having more sunscreen slathered on top without looking crazy. This means lightweight, creams or liquids and never powder. Really, no powder.

First, I start with very lightweight coverage where it is needed. I might add a little more BB Cream or use a light foundation like Neutrogena's Healthy Skin Enhancer. You want something that makes things look more even, but definitely shows your skin tone through it. If it smears with sunscreen application it won't be noticeable, but you'll still have light coverage.

I still always have under eye issues, so I need concealer. I like to use a more pigmented concealer, here I've picture the Amazing Cosmetics Concealer, which I just bought a few days ago. Make Up For Ever Full Cover or IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer are also good choices. I then apply the concealer very strategically to ensure that I'm covering up what I want to cover up, but if things migrate a little bit I will be ok and things will look fine. (Note that in order to do this you really need that concealer to match your skin tone, not be 1-2 shades lighter than your skin.)

I apply the concealer in the dark blue area you'll see in the picture above. It goes on the inner corner of my eye, under my eye and down the side of my nose a little to create a triangle. I then blend it outward into the lighter blue area. Note in that area I'm only blending into it, I'm not applying more concealer. It should all be flawless in to your skin. This is basically what I described doing in my undereye conceal and correct post, though it's a bit more of a deliberate triangle. Here I'm applying in the triangle, there I was blending it into one.

I still like to apply a little blush on these days, I'm so fair that going without sometimes prompts those "do you feel ok?" questions that are awkward. I go for a cream blush, it won't become a gloppy mess when sunscreen goes over it later. I like Maybelline Bouncy Blush (in Fresh Pink), Stila Convertible Color (in Lillium) or NARS Multiple (in Orgasm).

Note that I said no powder. I've found that a tiny bit in the t-zone is ok, but not right before you reapply. Only at the time of application to set everything. Typically I'll apply my makeup, let everything on my face sit for a few minutes (aka- do my eyes or my hair), and then blot gently with a kleenex. You're trying to get any liquid off of your face, not smear things around. Then a small amount of powder in the t-zone if really necessary. If you're more than a bit oily, I suggest trying a little milk of magnesia as a primer, apply a small amount of watered down MoM after your sunscreen but before makeup.

how to reapply sunscreen over your makeup
When you've been outside for a few hours and it's time to reapply, choose your sunscreen carefully. I tend to go for a chemical sunscreen for reapplication. The physical sunscreens are thicker and more prone to becoming a mess. They especially like to just sit on top of makeup and leave a white mess instead of applying like they should. Go for the highest SPF that you can stand, and something fairly lightweight. I'll use either the Kiehl's Super Fluid UV Defense or La Roche Anthelios again, or sometimes I'll go for the Aveeno formulation of the summer (yes, it seems to change every summer, but it is better each time. Get the "adult" chemical sunscreen formula).

I put the amount I need for reapplication in my palm. If I don't have it all there, I tend to skimp on reapplication, and then I regret it later. I dot the sunscreen all over my face, neck (don't forget the back!) and my ears, and then rub it in. Obviously you can be more vigorous in areas like your neck, but where you've applied makeup I generally think it's best to rub in little circles, don't move the sunscreen too far, but work fairly quickly. If anything does rub away from its original location, then it hasn't gone far (that concealer...) and usually you still look fine.

I also really like to use stick sunscreens. I've been using the Murad mostly recently, but Coppertone and Neutrogena also make good ones, and this year Coppertone even has a tattoo sunscreen stick! (I don't have any, I find it amusing that tattoos need their own special sunscreen though.) The sticks are great for putting on after reapplying the sunscreen. I do this as a second added layer of protection, mostly to areas that get hit by the sun a lot and are likely to have the sunscreen there rub/sweat off. My nose, the tips of my ears, the front bit of my part, my cheeks... you get the idea. All of those places that I turn pink first.

how to wear makeup and sunscreen together
I should probably have reworded this graphic, it sounds very dirty! In actuality, this is what I do when I'll be outside for long periods of time and will either be getting wet (pool or beach) or it's very hot & humid so I know that there will be a lot of sweating!

The additional water added means that I can't use my previous SPF lotion or BB Cream as a sunscreen "base" and expect it to stay put. I can use that lotion if I want for hydration, but I definitely need to apply a waterproof sunscreen over the top. I like Aveeno's formulas, Coppertone Sport or Neutrogena (I prefer the Ultra Sheer Dry Touch formula). I apply this sunscreen over my lotion, and while I do my eyes or my hair I give it about 4 or 5 minutes to sink in to my skin and "set". I then blot gently with a kleenex to remove any oily residue so that I can apply makeup without dealing with the grossness.

Reapplication is with the same sunscreen (with the addition of a stick sunscreen) in the same manner as above, working in small sections, blot if you need to, don't forget areas like the tips of your ears!

waterproof makeup to wear with sunscreen
Makeup over the heavier sunscreens and when dealing with wet conditions, is well, much less. I stick to waterproof makeup formulations, and there's less that you can do to the sunscreen covered areas of your face. I like to use a waterproof concealer, I've found that the Lancome Effacernes is the most waterproof, though IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye isn't far behind and it is more pigmented. I use the concealer just like up above, though I use a little less of it since the sunscreens make it more likely to move around here. For the same reason I can't use blush, so I'll go for a stain like the Julia's Lip Tint, which come in so many shades that you can find a good shade for a blush pretty easily.

Do you reapply over makeup? Let me know how you do it!

Included in this prize pack:

Pure Renewal Dry Shampoo: Definitely one of my favorites! It does a great job of mopping up the oil, adding volume and doesn't turn your hair white.

Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes: They just remove everything, are very gentle and don't leave any residue behind. These wipes are the ones I reach for when I am mid-morning routine and I've just spilled eye shadow all over my cheeks. Which is... basically every day.

Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (in light and medium shade): Light to medium in terms of coverage, this is moisturizing but not too much for my combination skin.

There will be 3 winners! Open to those in the US and over 18 years of age.

Aveeno Pure Renewal Dry Shampoo: Great Everyday Dry Shampoo Option

Aveeno Pure Renewal Dry Shampoo
Another day... another dry shampoo?

It's true, yet another dry shampoo has hit the market, though the options at this price point are usually either a bit lackluster or aren't available at many mass market stores. Aveeno's new Pure Renewal is definitely worth checking out if you haven't found a dry shampoo that you love yet.

This dry shampoo comes in a spray can and is sulfate free. It has a herbal, clean scent and it seems to be completely clear! I can't tell where I sprayed it even when I just do it on my hand.

Overall, it does add nice volume to my hair, soaks up all of my oiliness and lasts all day. If you haven't added a dry shampoo to your hair product collection yet, grab this one next time you're at the store.

5 Years of Favorite Products: Aveeno Baby Sunscreen

I've already shared my overall favorite sunscreen Aveeno's Hydrosport, but I did want to offer up a physical sunscreen option for those with super sensitive skin or children under age 2.

Aveeno Baby Sunscreen is my pick for a great physical sunscreen. Physical sunscreens are typically not absorbed into the skin (I say this with the caveat that newer, micronized physical sunscreens can be absorbed), so they are better for those with skin conditions and are the only sunscreens recommended for use in kids from 6-24 months by the AAP.

Aveeno seems to have gotten around most of the typical physical sunscreen issues with this product. There really is no scent and the thick white cream doesn't take much rubbing to completely disappear into skin. Once applied I can't feel it on my skin, so this is a dramatic improvement over other physical sunscreens. Most physical sunscreens feel so thick and heavy on my skin that I can't stand to apply them.

5 Years of Favorite Products: Aveeno Hydrosport Sunscreen

I'm a big proponent of wearing sunscreen every day, though I don't think you need to slather on SPF 1000 every day. (Learn more about how sunscreen work, how to pick the best sunscreen for you and how I chose sunscreen for myself.)

Aveeno Hydrosport Sunscreen was my favorite of the summer in 2011, after trying out about 50 (about 99% of which never made it to the blog). This is a chemical sunscreen, so I don't recommend it for young children or those with super sensitive skin.

The Hydrosport collection is water resistant, provides broad spectrum coverage and is incredibly lightweight. I prefer the lotion formulation, which comes as SPF 85 only. It is a thick, white creamy consistency and has a faint sunscreen scent. It absorbs into my skin quickly and I can not feel it on my skin, obviously unusual for such a high SPF coverage product.

Aveeno Positively Ageless Review: Shitake Extract Makes Me Risk Myself for Beauty

When a box of Aveeno's Positively Ageless products arrived at my house I was pretty happy. I'm a skincare junkie, and lately I haven't posted much about more affordable anti-aging skincare products. So, I started using them almost immediately (I may have "accidentally" forgotten to see what I was meant to be reviewing next. Oops!)

I assumed that I was just using some anti-oxidants and maybe peptides in addition to the usual oatmeal and the SPF 30. I found out a few days later that the product has Shitake Extract. Oops! I'm a bit, ok, more than a bit, allergic to mushrooms. I've always avoided them in beauty products in the past. I had no untoward effects from the mushrooms.

I want everyone to know that I risked myself for you. Well, for you and and a good broad spectrum UV coverage skin lotion. Moral of the story, read the box before I test something. Which I've always done in the past, but here I was blinded by the UV coverage.

Read on to see what I actually thought of the products, and why I kept using them despite the mushrooms!

Aveeno Baby: A Physical Sunscreen for Everyone

Aveeno Baby: A Physical Sunscreen for Everyone, review
A few days ago, I promised to share a great physical sunscreen that I've been using. Yes, it's a baby sunscreen, but I swear it is amazing. Why use a physical sunscreen over a chemical one? Physical sunscreens are typically not absorbed into the skin (I say this with the caveat that newer, micronized physical sunscreens can be absorbed), so they are better for those with skin conditions and are the only sunscreens recommended for use in kids from 6-24 months by the AAP.

My biggest problems with physical sunscreens are really just due to the weight of them. I feel like they are heavier on my skin, make me feel sticky and often leave behind a white cast to the skin. Aveeno seems to have gotten around most of those issues with this product. There really is no scent and the thick white cream doesn't take much rubbing to completely disappear into skin. Once applied I can't feel it on my skin, so this is a dramatic improvement over other physical sunscreens.

I tried out the sunscreen stick as well. It is a creamy white stick that has a slightly waxy feeling. It does leave a bit of a white tint behind in addition to a slightly tacky feeling on my skin. However, since this isn't something that you apply to your whole body, I think this is fine for my ears, cheeks and nose.

Aveeno Hydrosport Review: My Sunscreen Pick of the Summer

Aveeno Hydrosport Review: My Sunscreen Pick of the Summer, broad spectrum
I recently shared what I want in an ideal sunscreen. I've been trying out a few sunscreens for feature this summer, but this Aveeno one has really become pretty much the perfect sunscreen. So, I'm just going to say it, this is my favorite sunscreen this summer and if you're looking for one to buy just get this one. And if you're looking for a physical sunscreen, I'll be reviewing a great physical sunscreen in a few days.

Bioelectricity and You: Can a Cream "Recharge" Your Skin?

aveeno, neutrogena, roc, anti-aging, explanation, brillance, e-pulse, electricity, currents, skin
I know by now you've likely seen the commercials, the ads in your magazine or even read famous dermatologists discussing this new breakthrough in skin care in a magazine (I think I've seen it in 3 at last count).

"Bioelectricity", just hearing that term makes me think... well, not that it's amazing. Honestly, that term makes me think of those copper bracelets they sell in the in-flight catalog or on late night television. You know the one, they show some guy wearing it while he's golfing and then they claim that the bracelet cured his diabetes? I thought of that immediately when I heard about these products. Then I did a pubmed search. Nothing. There was some nonsense about everyone knowing the electricity in your skin decreases as you age. I didn't learn that in med school. Obviously this was all nonsense.

Or, was it?

What exactly is electricity? It's a current. A current is movement of charged particles. Which means you just need some charged things moving around. Oh yeah, I did learn that in medical school. And I use it everyday in my ICU. We just don't call it electricity, we call it shifting.

A lot of things in our bodies are charged, and in order for our cells to function properly they need to be kept at certain levels in different compartments. Things like Sodium, Potassium and Calcium. They're all charged ions, kept at different levels in cells, out of cells, in different ares of the body. And they move around. That's current, and therefore electricity. If they can't move cells not only can't function properly, they actually die.

So, there is electricity in our bodies. Now what's this that Johnson & Johnson is doing? And, more importantly, does it actually work?
