MAC Style Maven Look in a Box Face Kit Review and Swatches

When Nordstrom opened up their Anniversary Sale to Early Access last week, I immediately ordered the 3 palettes I was most interested in, 2 from MAC and 1 from Bobbi Brown. I'll be reviewing all of them this week, and I have to say that you really can not go wrong with any of the three palettes. They are all good.

MAC Sophisticate Look in a Box Face Kit Review and Swatches

Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale opened to Early Access last week, and I immediately ordered 3 shadow palettes. Here's a peek at the M·A·C Look in a Box Sophisticate Face Kit, which I thought would probably be much to warm for my skin tone (I'm usually more neutral, slightly cool). I thought for sure I'd be just handing this one over to my much warmer toned mom after swatching it. But, after seeing it in person.... I'm not so sure! This isn't as warm as I had expected. And strangely enough, it really is pinker in the palette than the shadows are once applied.

The Best of MAC: The 13 Products You Must Have!

The Best of MAC: The 13 Products You Must Have! via @15minbeauty

1. 'Prep + Prime' Skin Refined Zone Treatment: I talk about this light lotion a lot, but it really is a mattifying wonder! You can use it under foundation or over it (really!) and it will give you a semi-matte finish.

2. Face & Body Foundation: MAC has quite a few great foundations (Studio Fix Foundation and Matchmaster Foundation are also great), but this one really is a hidden gem! It is meant to be used pretty much anywhere on your body, so it is very lightweight and lasts all day. While the coverage is light to medium, you can easily build it up where you need to.

3. 'Prep + Prime' Fix+ Finishing Mist: Fix+ is amazing stuff! You can use it over your makeup as a setting spray, it will lock all of your makeup in place all day. It's also great to wet down shadows to up their intensity or even use them as an eye liner that won't budge. When used before your makeup, it helps smooth everything for perfect foundation application.

4. 'Prep + Prime' Transparent Finishing Powder: This loose powder is super lightweight and nearly invisible on your skin. It isn't unique, Tarte, Make Up For Ever and even ELF all have similar powders.

5. 'Pro Longwear' Concealer: This lightweight concealer comes in 15 shades, is easy to blend and really will stick around all day long.

6. 'Mineralize' Skinfinish: This pressed/baked powder has a frosty finish and comes in different skin tones. It is great to use as a highlighter or a shimmery bronzer.

7. Paint Pot: The paint pots are interesting. They are creamy eye shadows that can apply with just the swipe of a finger. While a lot of the colors are very vibrant and pigmented, you can also choose a color similar to your skin tone to use as a shadow primer. Popular choices for that are Bare Study and Soft Ochre.

8. Eye Shadow: Ah, the MAC eye shadows. You can buy them in special quads and in or out of their pots. My favorites include Carbon (a true matte black that is great to use as a shadow), All That Glitters (a very pretty gold), Phloof is a great highlighter, Satin Taupe and Woodwinked are both neutrals that work for pretty much everyone.

9. Fluidline: A great gel eye liner, BlackTrack is one of those beauty must have shades! I also really love MacroViolet, a deep plum/purple color.

10. Strobe Cream: This is a lightweight priming lotion that adds radiance on days you feel less than stellar. A little goes a long way!

11. Lipstick: The best MAC lipsticks really should take up a whole series of posts. There are too many amazing shades to mention them all. There are great nude lippies (Creme D'Nude, Myth), reds (Lady Danger, Rebel, Ruby Woo) and bright pinks (the Candy Yum Yum shown here).

12. Eye Kohl: It's a basic eye pencil, but the shade Teddy is a cult favorite for a reason. This deep chocolate shade is just a little red and it adds quite a bit of depth.

13. Lip Pencil: Sometimes you need a lip pencil to use with your lipstick. Spice is "the" lip pencil color most talked about. This is a universal shade that is nude, but mauve and works for almost everyone.

MAC All About Nude Look In a Box Review and Swatches

When I shared my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Beauty Picks, I pointed out this set as an amazing steal, and I was pretty focused on the eye shadow trio. Ohhh.... look at it closely....

(Here are all of my Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Picks)

MAC All About Nude Look In a Box

The MAC All About Nude Look In a Box is currently sold out on-line, but you might get lucky and find it in stores. So, I'm posting my pictures of it anyways!

Included in this box set are a few nude lippies, a basic black liner, and an anything but basic eye shadow trio!
• Lipstick in Soft Savour (luster finish)
• Lipglass in Feeling Fine (frost finish)
• Veluxe Pearlfusion Eyeshadow in Cool Companions
• Technakohl Liner in Graphblack

MAC All About Nude Look In a Box

You can see that the lippie is a bit on the pink side of nude (which is always more flattering for me), the gloss is mostly clear but has very pretty shimmer (it's perfect for layering over pretty much any lipstick), and the shadows. OMG.... the shadows. I was mostly interested in the middle greenish color. It's not exactly green. It's kind of an army green/gold/khaki color. I knew when I swatched it that I was reminded of something...

All About Nude Look In a Box compared to Lancome Erika F

It's a little more green and khaki, with less grey, but it is pretty similar to Lancome's famed Erika F shadow. Both have very similar shimmer, which you need to see in person. Erika F isn't available here in the US (apparently some of the pigments aren't FDA approved), and when I was in Paris about 5 years ago I spent the entire trip looking for this shadow at every Lancome counter. I finally found it at the airport on the way home, so I bought two! It's a shadow I only pull out on "special" days, and I love that this is a very similar shade.

I haven't tried these products in a look yet, but I wanted to share them before there was no hope of finding it in stores. Snag one if you see it!

MAC All About Beige Look In A Box Review and Swatches

When I placed my massive Nordstrom Anniversary Sale order the other day (which was much pared down from everything that I originally put in my cart), the first thing to make the cut was the MAC All About Beige Look In A Box. While it looked a tad warm for my cool toned skin, I've been venturing into warmer territory since going auburn last year. Sometimes the results are good, sometimes bad. But this looked neutral enough that I would still be ok.

(FYI, you can check out the rest of my Nordstrom Sale Picks, but things are selling out so move fast!)

MAC All About Beige Look In A Box Review and Swatches

The great thing about this is that it is a pretty compact palette (it's about the dimensions of my iPhone, though thicker), and it has a lot of product in there! You could easily create a weekend's worth of looks using just this palette. It's great for those that just want to try a new look as well. After seeing how amazing the beige kit is, I'm really regretting taking the All About Plum kit out of my cart at the last minute.

MAC All About Beige Look In A Box Review and Swatches

Eyeshadows (top)
- Rocketgirl (satin finish)
- Plum Ember (satin finish)
- Sable Riche (frost finish)
- Cocktail Black (frost finish)
- Honesty (luster finish)
- Light Study (matte finish)

Powder Blushes (lower left)
- Love and Laughter (satin finish)
- Liberating (satin finish)

Lipsticks (bottom right)
- Modern Wow! (amplified finish)
- What’s Haute? (amplified finish)

- Duo-handled 275SE Brush/316SE Lip Brush

As usual, all of the products are very pigmented (you can't see Light Study very well because it blends into my skin, but there is a very light ivory shadow at the far left). They blend beautifully. The blushes are showing up as super pigmented in this swatch, but I applied them with a q-tip. With a regular brush they'll be a great compliment to the shadows. My only complaint is that I prefer my lippies to be separate lippies, that way they can join the collection in my purse that I carry around everywhere!

I'm still debating about picking up that All About Plum kit. Did you get it? How is it?

MAC's Masterclass Brushes: Yes, This is the Review of Makeup Toothbrushes

I Bought It

MAC Masterclass Cosmetic Brushes

I debated and debated about it, but I kept hearing that these new MAC makeup brushes were life changing. So I snapped them up. Or, I ordered them online. Whatever. And, no. They're not toothbrushes. Well, not really.

First, you should know that although they look like toothbrushes, they're super soft. They remind me quite a bit of my favorite brushes from IT Cosmetics (I don't own this set, just some random ones, but I really want this set), because they're normal makeup brush bristles that are very densely packed. What's interesting about the bristles is that they're so dense that rather than getting down into the brush, makeup seems to float on surface.

Did I mention they're really soft?

MAC Master Class Toothbrush for Makeup Review

There are currently only 3 brushes available, but you can see from their names that there must be more planned. You can see that the handles are also pretty unique for makeup brushes. Instead of looking like paint brushes, they are wide and ergonomic with rubber to help you grip them.

how to use mac masterclass makeup brushes

I've been using these brushes for a few days now, though I did do quite a few looks for future posts so probably it's a week worth of use. Before starting them, I watched an amazing video from Karen over on Makeup and Beauty Blog. She went to the MAC Pro Shop in San Francisco and spent some time with one of their artists, he showed her some great tips and tricks! Go and watch Karen's MAC Masterclass Makeup Brush Video before you use them!

I think my current favorite of the trio is the Oval 6 brush. In the video, he shows Karen how to use it with a primer for mattifying, and it really does work! The MAC Prep + Prime Skin Refined Zone can be used even over makeup with this brush (tip: I've been using a few other mattifying products with it, I'll spill the beans soon, I promise!) This is also great for foundation or blush. You rub it over your skin like it is gliding around, pushing very slightly. It's not for dabbing and stippling like other brushes. I'm not sure if you can tell in the top pic there, but the bristles are slightly bent. Run it back and forth, the bristles should slightly bend, but it shouldn't be with a lot of pressure.

The Liner 1 brush is my new best friend for eye liner. You can either just pat it along your lash line or run it along slightly. Either way, it is thinner than the smudge brush that I usually use, and I'm loving it! I'm sure there are other uses for this brush, but I'm going to reserve it for liner. Liner, liner, liner. Which I love.

The last brush is the Oval 3 brush, and this is the one I haven't really mastered yet. I've been using it to pat or sweep shadow onto my entire lid, but I'm still awkward with it. Nothing seems to be very precise yet when I use this brush, so I need more practice. At about 12:50 in Karen's MAC Masterclass Makeup Brush Video, Victor shows her how to use this brush for her crease and even contouring on the side of her nose. I tried this. I looked crazy, it was way too big! I swear I'll master this technique!

Have you bought these brushes? I want to know how you're using them!

The Favorite Eye Shadow Shades of Makeup Artists
The best MAC eye shadow combinations

I love using MAC’s Vanilla as a full base color with multiple combinations like two of Urban Decay colors Snatch blended softly into MAC Vanilla, with heavy liner, paired with a dramatic lash and Carbon Black Mascara. I also enjoy the look using MAC Vanilla as the base coat then on the inner lid and lash line use the light metallic pink from Two-Faced’s Thief of Hearts duo, on the middle of the lid and outer lid use the burgundy plum color then to finish use MAC Carbon on the outer crease and blend into outer lash line with black liner on the water line.

The favorite eye look shades of makeup artist Emma White
Dior Nude Luminescence, Dior Brown Fever, Urban Decay Naked 2 (I love using the Naked 2 palette often; there are countless combinations I use from it!), and MAC Vanilla are all colors that I use frequently for highlighting or contouring.

Makeup Wars: Valentine's Day Look

Makeup Wars
For this week's Makeup Wars we've decided to showcase a beauty element that we'll be incorporating into our Valentine's Day look! I've decided to show some of the makeup I'll be wearing (though probably not exactly like this, but this is the general idea). I don't have any big plans, I'm working that day and I have a 2 year old at home. But I'll probably do a few special things for my husband.

Things that I'll be incorporating into my look:
1. Curly hair: (Ok yes, you can see my new color here, more on that this afternoon!) My hubby likes when I curl my hair, and I'm still getting the hang of my new cut. This was the day after the cut, and somehow I feel kind of plastic here (and a bit like this is a DMV picture, that background is so boring!) My layers are moving a bit differently now with curls, so I'm practicing. But, I usually curl with my Beachwaver Curling Iron, and with just a little mousse and some hair oil my hair is good to go for a few days.

2. Darker Shadow: Obviously, a little smoky eye! When creating this look I just grabbed things from my stash that worked, I didn't worry about whether items were currently available (so sorry about the MAC Fafi paint pot from 2008!)

3. Pink Lips: I wanted some color, but not too dark. That middle ground seems to be something my hubby responds to.

4. Elie Saab Perfume: Whenever I wear this light and pretty floral he says he likes it. Every single time.

Makeup Wars
To create my eye look I wanted darker than usual, but I wanted to incorporate some pretty metallics and add depth. I started with my typical Urban Decay Primer Potion to make everything last all day. I then smudged a light layer of MAC Cash Flow Paint Pot (from the Fafi collection) over the lid right up to the crease. The Laura Mercier Black Gold liner gives a very similar look. I added a little Urban Decay Venus (from the Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette) above the crease. This was for the crease shadow to be blended into.

Makeup Wars
Next I patted a little of the grey/taupe shadow from the Shu Uemura Mesmerizer shadow over my entire lid. I then took Urban Decay's Mushroom shadow, which has a similar tone to the Shu Uemura but is more opaque and a bit darker, and I worked this in to my crease and a little under my outer lower lid. Everything was blended out.

Next I applied black pencil to my upper and lower lash lines, really working the liner into my upper lash line and smudging it well. Finally, I curled my lashes like crazy and layered two mascaras for amazing lashes with just mascara. I used Fresh Supernova and then the new Maybelline Rocket Volume Express.

Makeup Wars
In the final look you can see that while it's smoky, keeping the darker shades out to the outer corners kept the inner half of the eye light, so the eye is more wearable. I think the metallic kept it from being boring.

I've been spraying my face every day with the new formulation of the Urban Decay All Nighter spray to keep my makeup long lasting. A full review is coming, but I love it!

MAC Pressed Pigments: Yes, Super Pretty. But Worth It?

MAC Pressed Pigments
Have you seen these latest MAC shadows yet? They're not really shadows, instead they're pressed pigments. So, basically those loose pigments you're used to from MAC, pushed down so they're not loose and messy all over. But, they don't have the same binders and such as a regular eye shadow, so when you barely touch the palette, you'll get color.

MAC Pressed Pigments
When used alone and dry, the pigments aren't very well... pigmented. The lighter colors are especially powdery/glittery and tend to blow around quite a bit. These need to be treated with care. I've found that a stiffer brush and applying over a primer that I'd use with a loose shadow (aka- one with a little "grab" to it like Too Faced Shadow Insurance or Fyrrinae Pixie Epoxy), and then instead of sweeping the brush I will lightly press or pat on to the lid.

MAC Pressed Pigments
In order to show how pretty these colors are, I've patted them over a very light layer of Pixie Epoxy. You can see with the right primer they can really be intense and the shimmer is insane!

MAC Pressed Pigments
Amethyst is the color I've used the most so far, I've found that a dry brush with a very light patting over other colors adds a very pretty shimmer/sparkle! I've used it for a few purple-ish smoky eyes (I have pics coming soon for one), and it was amazing!

My Current Favorites: 2012 Edition

It has been a looooong time since I updated my list of favorite products. And while everyone else is posting about their favorite products of the year, I fully admit that I can't always remember what year things came out. And let's face it, you don't care that I like some cleanser that came out in June if there's one that came out in 2011 that I like better. Right?

So, here they are, the top 10 products that I find myself reaching for over and over. I have to hide them from myself when I am testing other products (totally true!) but I break them out in between testings and sometimes on days that I just need my favorite eye liner. I'm sure I've received these as samples from the companies, but I've bought them myself. Over and over and over...

1. Neutrogena Naturals Cleanser: This has a permanent spot on my counter. While it doesn't remove the most stubborn of eye makeup, it does remove everything else (such as normal, every day stuff) quickly and easily with just a washcloth or my Clarisonic.

2. CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara: Yes, you really can wear 30 coats of this stuff without a clump in site. You don't really need to though. I'm a big fan of layering my mascaras, and this is now my daily go-to mascara. I just grab randomly for the other one (I'm slowing working through my giant mascara drawer to find a killer combo), but this one is always there.

3. Revitalash: Yes, it works. I just reordered mine (I'm buying from Drugstore.com now, it is much cheaper there!) but this is definitely my secret weapon.

4. Milk of Magnesia: I'm not even that oily, but no mattifier has ever come close to the results I get from using Milk of Magnesia as a primer. I don't really use it in the winter, but this is a must for summer!

5. Kiehl's Ultra Facial SPF 15: I've lost track of how many posts I've featured this moisturizer in at this point. I love it. This is my go-to daily moisturizer.

6. Kiehl's Midnight Recovery: I won't travel without this product. I swear that airplanes actively pull moisture from your body, my skin hates it. I use this about once every 2 weeks or so throughout the winter, though now that my toddler wants to play in the snow I'm sure that my frequency will increase this winter.

7. Elizabeth Arden Smoky Liner: You may have noticed that I include this liner in a lot of my looks, though it doesn't have its own review post. I have it in black, brown and navy, though I'm thinking of picking up a few other colors. This liner is perfect for pushing into my lash line, it is just soft enough and is just smudgy enough and it lasts by far the longest on my water line. I just bought a back up black a few weeks ago, despite the huge number of black liners already in my eye liner drawer (yes, I have a drawer. Ok, it is half of a drawer, the other half is mascara. But, I still have issues.)

8. NYX Eyeshadow Base: This is another product that I break out almost every day, but only feature in looks on the blog. I use the skin tone version of this, it comes in a little pot and I swear that I have over half of it left despite nearly daily use for about 18 months. It has the consistency and coverage of a concealer, which is perfect since I have some visible vessels on my eyelids and covering them before my eye shadow looks a lot better. I do get a little better wear for my shadows when wearing UDPP or TFSI, but the NYX covers the vessels and my shadow is about 95% intact at the end of the day.

9. MAC Mineralize Eye Shadow in Family Silver: I've been wearing this shadow for years, and I would love MAC to re-issue it. While it isn't super pigmented, somehow this is the shadow that pulls everything together and makes it all look more polished. Half is a grey with metallic, the other half is an off white, faintly silver color, again with some coppery-gold highlights. Somehow when my shadow isn't quite right, a little of the light or darker grey and some blending makes it all better.

10. Wet'n'Wild Nutty Shadow: This is my perfect crease color. For under $2.

A Month of Red Lips: MAC Eden Rouge Lipstick

MAC Eden Rouge Lipstick Swatch
The MAC Mattenes are usually very pigmented, last for about 5-6 hours (at least for me) and are... well... dry. On me they often look like I could use a good balm. This one really shocked me, it somehow wasn't super matte? It felt a tad hydrating? Definitely a good thing!
