Poke A Dot: A Makeup Organizer Unlike Anything Else

Product Sent for Review

Poke A Dot Makeup Organizer Review

I'm a sucker for organizers, makeup bags, drawer dividers... you name it, if it holds stuff, I want to try it out. And I'm convinced that it will completely change my life. And let's be honest, most of the items do help me contain my stuff, but they mostly just sit there or perform the same function as the item they replaced before them.

When I was asked to try out the Poke a Dot, I was super excited! Here was something that organizes, but it does actually function differently then my other products. It fulfills a few functions, and easily transitions between them.

Must Have Makeup Brushes Under $15

Must Have Makeup Brushes Under $15

Today for Makeup Wars we're sharing our favorite makeup brushes! I have a bit of a "thing" for makeup brushes, I have a huge collection at home and I can't seem to stop trying out new ones! Many of my favorites are from brands like It Cosmetics (their face brushes in particular are amazing, you can find a few at Sephora but they have a full line of brushes that are exclusive for ULTA), NARS (especially their #45 Smudge Brush, here at Sephora or at NARS), Laura Mercier (the travel crease brush and pony tail) and Bobbi Brown (her Ultra Fine Eye Liner brush).

Despite those expensive brushes, I have to admit that many of the brushes that I use regularly are under $15, and many actually only cost a few dollars. Brands like ELF and Coastal Scents have amazing brushes, and since they're so cheap, you can definitely afford to stock up! The $1 ELF Eye Shadow Brush is one that I have about 10 of (since I can then be a bit lazier about cleaning them), and I reach for it regularly instead of more expensive brushes from MAC.

I thought rather than just showing my favorite, I'd showcase my favorites to create a full kit of brushes. All of the brushes are under $15, most are under $6.

Eyes

1. ELF Eyeshadow Brush (at ELF): This is a great, basic fluff brush.
2. ELF Smudge Brush (at ELF): I have a lot of different smudge brushes, and I change the brush I use depending upon the look I'm after. This is a softer, more flexible smudge and creates a softer look.
3. Coastal Scents Classic Blender Crease Brush (at Coastal Scents): This is perfect for applying a crease color, or blending a little shadow under your lower lash line.

Face

4. ELF Ultimate Blending Brush (at ELF): I like to use this to buff/blend foundation or BB Cream.
5. EcoTools Micro Blending Brush (at ULTA or Amazon): This is my recent obsession for blending concealer, it is basically a very small kabuki brush. Check out my full review.
6. EcoTools Precision Blush Brush (from ULTA or Amazon): This is a fluffy blush brush, just the right size for a nice pop of color that isn't too intense.
7. ELF Bronzing Brush (at ELF or Amazon): This is a soft and very flexible brush, I like it for adding just a touch of highlighter to my cheekbones.
8. ELF Pointed Powder Brush (at ELF): I like to have a smaller brush for my powder, I mostly apply a light layer under my eyes and just down my t-zone.
9. EcoTools Perfecting Blender Duo (at ULTA or Amazon): I admit that I mostly use my BeautyBlender sponge, but I recently discovered these EcoTools sponges (check out the post here) and I love the shape of these! The flat sides and the point are great for blending around my eyes and nose.

Stepping Up My Concealer Game with EcoTools

Great concealer and color correction sponges and brush from EcoTools

A few weeks ago I was on the hunt for EcoTools for a sponsored post (you can read it here, I created a little kit of brushes that I recently took to Disney World for our family spring break, it was awesome and perfect). While I was shopping, I spotted a few things from EcoTools off to the side, and while they didn't really fit with my theme of a pared down travel makeup brush kit, I bought them anyways. And wow, I'm glad I did! They have become some of my favorite makeup tools!

So, what are they? The Micro Blending Brush and Color Perfecting Minis.

Is Double Heating Better: Remington T Studio Thermaluxe Curlers Review

I love hot rollers. They are fast and easy. I can put them in my hair in about 3-4 minutes, and then let them cool down while I do my makeup. Once they're out, they just need a quick tousle, a spray of hair spray, and I'm ready to go! However, since my rollers are aging, they don't get as hot. Over the last year or so the change in temperature has been very noticeable, and the result is that my hair falls flat by the end of the day instead of 2-3 days later.

So, I've tried a few new sets of rollers, part of my forever hunt for the perfect, effortless curl. Those other sets haven't impressed me much. There was a set that was much too heavy, one from the same brand as my beloved stand by curlers that simply didn't have enough curlers, so I'm hoping that the third time is the charm!

Is Double Heating Better: Remington T Studio Thermaluxe Curlers Review

This roller set from Remington is a bit different, because rather than heating up only the roller, you also heat the clip! When your hair is rolled, you'll get more even and thorough heating, and a longer lasting curl.

You can see that the whole set comes in a double sided container, the roller slot vertically into their spots. There are 12 large 1 1/4" curlers and 8 medium 1" curlers. I haven't measured them, but I do feel like there is a shorter "rolling surface" than other curlers, so I need to use slightly smaller sections of hair. With other curlers I typically need about 18 to curl my hair (I have a lot!), but I use all 20 with this set.

Overall, I do really like this set. It is hotter than others, but doesn't burn my head. Heating the clip as well does make a difference with how long my curls last, I can get 2 days out of my curls. Because the curlers are larger at 1 1/4", the effect is more like a big, curly blow out than when I curl my hair with a curling iron. So, the first day it's curly, the next day my hair is big and voluminous with some waves.

I'm using the set quite frequently, but I would love it if Remington made a similar set with all 1" curlers, and taller/longer curlers so I could get a longer curl. So if someone happens to be reading this review.... please make some!

Is Double Heating Better: Remington T Studio Thermaluxe Curlers Review

Here's what my hair looks like right after I take out the curlers. You can see that they add a lot of volume and while there's curl, my hair is mostly really big and bouncy. The curl will calm down quite a bit in about an hour, but the effects will last for a day or two.

Creating a Makeup Brush Kit with Ecotools

Creating a Makeup Brush Kit with EcotoolsCreating a Makeup Brush Kit with Ecotools

Ecotools at WalmartI have a thing for makeup brushes. I love them, and I'm very picky about them. I need to have certain shapes and sizes when I do my makeup. I need to have them feel balanced in my hand. And I don't like to "make do" with a smaller than usual set when I'm out of town. No. I am a girl that likes to have a ready to go, complete, and full sized brush set for travel. And somehow my set is less than complete. The last few times I've travelled I've had to grab some off of my vanity, then things get misplaced... you get the idea.

Since we're heading out of town in a few weeks for our Spring Break, this is the perfect time to put together a new travel makeup brush collection. I headed to my local Walmart, where there's a big display of Ecotools brushes. They've just changed up the packaging, and they look super cute! I was able to create an entire makeup brush set for travel with just 4 purchases. There's a coupon deal now too, more on that in a bit.

Ecotools starter brush set

Ecotools Starter Brush Set

This brush set is the best place to start when creating your makeup brush set. There are 5 brushes and a little makeup bag in this set, which is perfect for putting all of the brushes in to keep them separated from my makeup.

• Powder/Blush Brush: This is the perfect soft brush for your blush or face powder. I like a brush this size for blush, so I'll use it for that. I think it would also be great for bronzer, when you want a sunny, glowy effect.
• Concealer Brush: I don't typically use a concealer brush, but this is also a great size for eye shadow.
• Full Shadow: A slightly smaller and fluffier brush than the concealer brush
• Angled Liner: Perfect for smudging liner, or applying brow powder.
• Spoolie: Don't fill in your brows without this! I use a spoolie every day to soften my brows, creating a more natural effect.

Ecotools Eye Enhancing Set

Ecotools Eye Enhancing Set

I love that these two brushes have all of the brushes I need to do my eyes! The four ends have everything you need to shade, define, blend and smudge.

Ecotool Full Powder Brush

Ecotools Full Powder Brush

This brush is basically a larger version of the powder/blush brush in the Starter Set. It's just the right size for applying powder all over my face and is super soft!

Ecotools blender sponge duo

Ecotools Blender Duo

I love using sponges to blend my concealer and foundation, and I couldn't resist the shape of this set! The two sponges come together and they are slightly different sizes. Instead of the typical egg shape, there are 2 flat sides and a linear point, so they're perfectly shaped to reach into areas like around your eyes and nose. I've also found that the flat sides are great at gently blending my face.

I mentioned that there's a coupon to purchase these items yourself! Coupons.com has $2 off any (1) EcoTools product at Walmart, make sure you snag that before you head to the store.

Ecotools travel brush kit

I have a pretty complete set currently, but might head back to grab some more brushes to contour and highlight. What would you add to this set of brushes?

You can find all of these brushes at Walmart!

If you've read my blog for a while, you may have noticed that I have a slight issue with curling my hair. Meaning, I'm completely obsessed. As a straight haired girl, I want what I do not have, and that is curly hair. I covet it, I will spend time to get it, I want to use no heat curlers, I own a huge number of curling appliances, and about 4 sets of hot rollers. Most of my favorite curling irons, and my fave blow dryer, are all from T3. And a few months ago I got an email from their website that the T3 hot rollers, which I've coveted for what feels like forever, were on sale. I pounced!

Recently, I got an email from Tarte telling me that a lot of their holiday stuff had been released, and I just could not help myself, I rushed over to the site and soon was ordering a couple of items (watch for some reviews in the next week or so). Included in that release was this brush set, a limited edition release in conjunction with Nicol Concilio, who I think is a YouTuber (I really hadn't heard of her previously). But, the set looked decent so I put it in my cart. It sounds like it's a good thing I pounced on it, it's currently sold out on the Tarte website! You can still find it elsewhere. And you really might want this set.

Some of My New Favorite Makeup Brushes: Maskcara Beauty Makeup Brush Review

I Bought It, Product Sent for Review

Maskcara Makeup Brush Review

I have a thing for makeup brushes. I have a ton of them, but I'm pretty picky about which ones I'll use. My preferences:
- Soft bristles that don't grab too much product
- Nicely weighted handle
- I don't care about synthetic or natural bristles
- I'm not a snob when it comes to brushes. Many of my favorites are just a few dollars. The shape, bristles, etc. All of that is much more important to me than brand.
- I prefer single headed brushes, because I store my brushes in cups on top of my vanity area. They stand up.

Well, I'm in love with the Maskcara makeup brushes, and I'm ignoring the fact that they are double ended. I was sent one brush for review by Maskcara a few months ago, and I liked it so much that I went back and bought 4 more brushes (including a duplicate of the brush I was sent). I now have all of their brushes except for the B Squared Brush, and I am kind of regretting not buying it now.

Oval Curling Wands for Every Price PointGHD Classic Wave Wand Review and Results

Do you remember this curling wand? I reviewed it last week, and the response has been insane. I've been getting emails, tweets, and just friends asking in person: I love that look, but really? $200??

I know. $200 is a lot for a curling wand. There are some great features in that one, such as super fast heating, and it is great at maintaining an even temperature for the entire wand.

But, there were a lot of requests for a lower priced option. So I went and found you some! Unfortunately, oval curling wands are really hard to find. The 5 that I found were pretty much the only options on-line.

I'm a big fan of a great cleansing brush. Give me any tool to make cleaning my skin more effective and I am going to be all over that! Most of the ones out there are variations on a theme: nylon or silicone bristles, they either rotate or have sonic vibrations. They all do a much better job of taking off your dirt and makeup than just using your hands, and some offer additional benefits like carrying cases for travel.

This cleansing brush is different. And if you're a skin care junkie, you're going to love what makes it different.

Conair Infiniti Pro Secret Curl Setters Review

Recently I've become obsessed with the idea of creating easy, long lasting spiral curls. I want to create curls that are simple, foolproof and last for days if I want them to. I can get this look with a curling iron or wand, but that takes time and effort! I would love to have heat free curls that I just release in the morning and they're perfect, or hot curlers that I can spend 5 minutes putting in my hair, leaving them in place while I do my makeup.

The Best Lash Curler Ever? Surratt Beauty Relevée Lash Curler Review

I Bought It Affiliate Links

Surratt Beauty Relevée Eye Lash Curler

About 6 months ago, an article from Refinery 29 popped up into my feed, declaring the Surratt Beauty Relevée Lash curler the best ever (check out the article here). I'm a huge beauty junkie obviously, and I'm even more of an eyelash/mascara girl. I thought I had tried it all, but I hadn't even heard of this curler! I had seen the products over on a few websites, but the lash curler didn't look like anything special to me. But that article sucked me in. I HAD TO TRY IT. Had to. No choice. Especially once I tried to order it, and for months it was out of stock online. Surely Refinery 29 must be right, and there are special powers in this eye lash curler.

Finally, about 6 weeks ago, after many attempts at ordering from various websites, I managed to successfully order this lash curler from Sephora. Success! My lashes were going to be revolutionized, right? Well....

Surratt Beauty Relevée Eye Lash Curler

First, looking at this lash curler, it does not look any different from any of my other curlers. The metal goes in the same pattern. The curler itself has the exact same length and curve as my other favorite curler (which I forgot to take pics of, but I was comparing to my Tweezerman ProCurl Eyelash Curler. There isn't a difference in how long the curved rubber pad is, how it curves or anything. The metal that compresses the lash itself seems to be pretty much the same as well.

What is different is the rubber that the curler uses for that pad. I think it is a bit denser than a brand new Tweezerman pad (and that is denser still than my Shu Uemura Lash Curler pad).

When I use this lash curler, and note that I've been using it now for about 6 weeks, there are days that I'm obsessively using this on one eye and the Tweezerman on the other, I have noted a bit of a difference. The curl with the Surratt Lash Curler is a bit more pronounced than the curl with the Tweezerman, and it lasts throughout the day. I also only need 1 curl with the Surratt Relevée, rather than 3-4 with the Tweezerman. I can't get the difference to show up in pictures, but I do notice it in person. I've asked friends pointed questions about my lashes, and they have noticed a bit of a difference in the curl as well, though they wouldn't have commented without my obsessive, lash curling questions and testing.

So, yes, I do notice a little bit of a difference with this lash curler. Enough of a difference that it is now the curler hanging out on my vanity counter and the Tweezerman has been relegated to my back up drawer. If you're due for a lash curler update, I would hunt this one down!

You can buy the Surratt Beauty Relevée Lash Curler is $30 at Sephora, Barneys New York, and Net-a-Porter

The Perfect Bend Made Foolproof: Wavy Hair Tutorial With The Kardashians

Sponsored Post

The Perfect Bend in Hair

If you've been on Instagram or Pinterest in the last few years, chances are you've seen the perfect wavy hair. Yes, it's the perfect wavy hair that I've been lusting after. Back in January I had my hair cut for the first time in months, and I had layers cut that were "weightless" rather than more traditional. Meaning, they are there, but because I've had them thinned out quite a bit, you don't seen an obvious line. Perfect for postpartum hair loss I thought. And also for getting the look of those waves I've been really yearning for!

Since that hair cut I've perfected curling my hair with a curling iron to get a very pretty look, but it isn't that perfect wavy bend that I want. Yes, that's right, I don't really want a curl. I want a bend. And it is really hard to get the perfect bend, unless you're a celeb hair stylist.

I've found a way to get the look I've wanted, and it is because of the Kardashians. I know, I know. But those girls have some amazing hair! And they teamed up with Chi/Farouk to create their line, so you know they had some amazing help. And it turns out that this is basically foolproof.

Kardashian Hair Beauty Tutorial

To get the look, this is as much about hair prep with products as it is about using the right heat tool.

I used:
Kardashian Beauty Black Seed Dry Oil
Kardashian Beauty Take 2 Dry Shampoo
Kardashian Beauty 3-in-1 Ceramic Styling Iron
Kardashian Beauty Pure Glitz Hair Spray
Beyond The Zone Beach Head Surf Shake Sea Salt Texturizing Spray

I start with damp hair. I apply a bit of the Black Seed Dry Oil, which will smooth frizz and protect my hair from heat damage while styling. I also spray the Surf Shake Spray throughout. I've found that the added texture from a salt spray helps my hair to hold curl much longer. Then I dry my hair straight.

How to get perfect wavy hair with Kardashian Beauty

Once my hair is dry (left), you can see that my hair still is a bit frizzy at the ends. A big part of this look working is to have ends that are smoothed. So, I start using the 3 in 1 tool as a flat iron. I just grab random sections and am not very obsessive about it. I smooth the entire hair shaft on the upper layers of my hair, but just concentrate on the ends for the lower layers.

How to use the Kardashian 3 in 1 flat iron

After my hair has been flat ironed, it is time to start waving/bending! Though, I have to say that the flat iron part of this tool worked really quickly and my hair required less heat than usual (only 380 instead of 400).

Kardashian 3 in 1 styling tool

Here's where the secret is. The 3 in 1 tool has plates on the outside that heat up to work like a curling wand. Except that it isn't really a curling wand. It's oval, and there's a spot where the 2 sides meet without a heated plate. So, not all of your hair gets heated. The result is that instead of an even, perfect curl, you get a bend. A bend.

I section my hair using a clip (these Croc Clips are my favorite), and then start curling! I use randomly sized sections of hair, and wrap it around the outside of the 3 in 1. I sometimes curl toward my face (as seen in this look) and sometimes away from my face. The point is to have random waves/bends, and varying the size and direction helps a lot. I always curl away from my face right next to it, the results are prettier that way.

When wrapping my hair, I generally leave a few inches free at the roots, and I don't wrap the last inch or two of my hair. While the hair is touching the iron, I don't have it wrapped very tightly. I hold this curl for about 8 to 10 seconds before gently releasing. While I'm holding my hair onto the iron, I twist the iron slowly, just rotating it about 1/4 turn in either direction.

The result is a bit random, and while slightly curled, it really is the perfect wavy bend instead of an actual curl! To keep it in place all day I spray it with the hair spray and scrunch it up just a tiny bit as the spray is drying.

The perfect bend in tousled hair

One of my favorite things about this hairstyle is that it can last for a few days and easily survives even super windy days (check out this picture after I'd been out running errands in 30 mph winds). To revive this hair, a few drops of the hair oil are all that I need! I also add a bit of dry shampoo at my roots for second day hair, it takes care of any greasy areas and adds volume without looking powdery or white.

The perfect tousled hair

Perfect Loose Curls: T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron Review

Product Sent for Review

T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron

So, if you follow me over on Instagram, you may have noticed that I've posted a few really, really good hair days recently (here and here), and the pictures didn't do my hair justice. In person, my hair was on point. Seriously. Amazing. People stopped me to tell me my hair was amazing. That's pretty amazing.

The thing that made my hair so amazing both of those days was the new T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron. I've used twirling curling irons before (most notably the Sarah Potempa BeachWaver), and while I've loved the results enough that I overused it to the point of frying my hair (tip: never go without at least 2 heat protecting hair products. You're welcome.)

So, now that I know to never skip my heat protectant, since getting the T3 Twirl 360, I can't seem to stop using it. It's very easy to use, just plug it in and hold down the power button. There is variable heat control, you can tell the temperature by looking at the lights on the curling iron.

What's really unique about this curling iron is how it twirls. When you have your hair on the iron, you hit the button and slightly twist your wrist in the direction that you want the curling iron to twirl in. It stops twirling as soon as you release the button.

Here's a look at what this curling iron does to my hair.

T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron
First Use

T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron
Still not sure why the camera made my hair so crazy light, but you can see the curls pretty well here!

Yes. I know. So. Pretty.

That's why I'm using it all the time. And yes, stocking up on more heat protectants.

For those of you that are wondering, what are the differences between the T3 and my BeachWaver?

1.) The T3 is a 1 1/4" barrel, instead of the 1" from the BeachWaver. The look is a bit looser, but definitely still curled. The tighter curls of the BeachWaver are great if I'm trying to get my hair to stay for a few days, but even that needs a bit of touch up. The T3 look works for 2 days, and I do a few fresh curls on the top layers of my hair to freshen it up, but I don't recurl all of it.

2.) The BeachWaver works by selecting the direction that you want the curling iron to twirl and hitting a button. The T3 has you hit a button and twist your wrist in the direction you want the curling iron to rotate. I think the learning curve is harder for the BeachWaver, it seemed to take me a while to figure out what direction I was going in if I put my hair in the curling iron a certain way. Just moving my wrist a bit is definitely easier!

2.) The BeachWaver is longer than a regular curling iron, and I love that feature. The T3 is a normal length. T3, I beg you to make this curling iron longer, that would make it perfect.

So, I have both now. And really, I will continue to use both (see #1 above). But I'm currently keeping the T3 out on my vanity because I'm using it every day. It is definitely worth it!
