Too Faced Chocolate Shop Palette Review and SwatchesToo Faced Chocolate Shop Palette Review and Swatches

My obsession with holiday palettes continues! Every year Too Faced comes out with a huge holiday collection, with a bunch of palettes. And while I have found the shadows in these palettes to be a bit more powdery than their normal palettes, they are still very well pigmented, blend well and the colors are great! In short, they're a steal. And the real issue is deciding which on you're going to buy.

This year I bought the Sephora Exclusive Chocolate Shop set.

Read on to see pictures, swatches and see if this year's palette lives up to previous year's palettes.

Maskcara's New Eye Shadows: Freaking Fantastic

Maskcara Eye Shadow Review and Swatch Pictures

A few weeks ago, there was yet another big release from Maskcara, and I haven't shared their last one yet! Expect my thoughts on their new brushes and face products later this week. In the meantime, I couldn't wait to share the new Maskcara eye shadows, so you'll hear about them first.

Because these shadows are amazing. Absolutely amazing and fantastic. I bought them all, and you'll want them too. And I have no idea which ones you should get, because I can't really decide which ones are must haves (except for Finn and Stardust, those 2 are definitely on the list).

Read on to see the shadows and I love them.

Quick and Easy Daytime Smokey Eye Tutorial with Palladio

I've posted a few quick and easy makeup looks lately, and the response has been great! Readers have asked for a few more tutorials, so I'll keep showing easy makeup looks, but I'm hoping to feature more brands at different price points.

Today's look only took about 5 minutes, something about using all pencil products makes application very fast and easy! The color products that I used are all from Palladio, which is also available at stores like ULTA and Sally Beauty if you want to see products in person. I love that they are at an affordable price point, but are well pigmented, apply easily and have botanical and vitamins added to the formulas.

The Perfect Nude Shadow Palette For The Pale Girls: BareMinerals The Nature of Nudes

The Perfect Nude Shadow Palette For The Pale Girls: Bare Minerals Nudes Review and Swatches

I'm a big sucker for an eye shadow palette, especially if that palette is neutral! I bought this shadow palette from my local ULTA about 3 weeks ago and have really loved it! I find that the shimmery shadows are perfect for my pale skin, they don't wash me out but also don't look chalky on my skin.

You can read on to see why I love it so much, but be warned... this Summer 2016 release is already hard to find! It's barely June, and I can no longer find it on the ULTA website, and it seems to only be on the BareMinerals UK Site. If you see one at your local ULTA, be sure to snag it!

It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Essentials Shadow Palette: Review, Swatches and Quick Look Tutorial

It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Essentials Shadow Palette: Review, Swatches and Quick Look TutorialIt Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Essentials Shadow Palette: Review, Swatches and Quick Look Tutorial

So, I'm not usually a matte eye shadow girl. I always think it is just kind of... boring. I want a little shimmer. Not a lot, but a little. Something to catch a little light. I usually use some satin and shimmer shadow in every eye look.

And then I read on someone's blog (or maybe it was a YouTube video? I think that was more likely) that some makeup artist claimed any shimmer on the lids was tacky. Tacky. WHAT?? I argue that's wrong. I certainly don't bling myself out like a disco ball on the regular.

But this stuck with me. So, I started to break out a few matte shadows that I had at home. They were, as expected, a bit... blah. Boring.

Then It Cosmetics (one of my favorite brands, I truly believe they can do no wrong), sent me an unexpected box. And inside was this cute little palette of essential shadows. And they say they are pretty! It's there, in the name! And if things are too matte for me, then I can always add a little of their transforming pearl shadow.

So, did this cute little palette change my mind about matte shadows?

My Basic Eye Makeup: An Easy to Follow TutorialMy Basic Eye Makeup: An Easy to Follow Tutorial

Every so often I get requests to update my "basic" posts, like showing how I do my eye shadow each day. So, by request (over email, on Facebook and in person from friends), today I'll show you how I do my eye makeup on days that I don't have much time! I use the same basic technique, though I might grab a different palette to add a little variation. But, as I show it here, this is my most common go-to eye look. It only takes me a few minutes, and I wear it pretty much every where! It's great for work, running errands or out with my husband.

Urban Decay Smoky Palette Swatch and Review

Urban Decay released their Smoky Palette earlier this summer and the blogosphere went nuts. I bought the palette on the first day it was available, basically stalking the Urban Decay website until it appeared!

And once it came... I wasn't quite sure what to do with it.

The colors are beautiful. As usual, Urban Decay has created shadows that are well pigmented, blend well and last all day, particularly when used over one of their Primer Potions.

Top 10 Tuesday: My Favorite Neutral Eye Shadow Palettes

I love a good eye shadow palette, and if the shadows are neutral, then I love it even more! Here's a peek at the neutral shadow palettes that I'm obsessing over right now. And really, is it any surprise that the first 3 are from Bobbi Brown, given my recent obsession? I didn't think so!

1. Bobbi Brown Greige Eye Palette: The newest one from Bobbi, this really is full of the perfect taupey-grey beige colors. Both matte and shimmer. Read my full Greige Eye Palette review and swatches, buy the palette from Bobbi Brown or Nordstrom.

2. Bobbi Brown Secret to Standout Eyes: This was the special palette from the Nordies Anniversary sale, but you can buy it still, just at a slightly higher price now. It's taken up permanent residence on my vanity counter, it is pointless to put it away! I'm hoping Bobbi releases Oyster as a shadow single, I'll probably hit pan in the next month or so. Here is my Secret to Standout Eyes review, you can buy the palette from Bobbi Brown or Nordstrom.

3. Bobbi Brown Shimmering Sands Eye Palette: Check out my full Shimmering Sands Palette Review and Swatches, you can buy the palette still from Bobbi Brown or Sephora.

4. Too Faced Boudoir Eyes: This is one of my old stand bys, I'm on my 2nd palette. Yes, I repurchased a palette. That is love people. Read my Too Faced Boudoir Eyes review, you can buy it from Too Faced or Sephora.

5. Urban Decay Naked: How could you have a neutral palette list without this palette? You can't. It's a classic and it works for everyone. It is definitely worth the steep price! Buy it from Urban Decay, Sephora or Nordstrom.

6. Urban Decay Naked Basics: This palette is filled with the neutral mattes that go perfectly with the Naked palette, and there's a #2 version to go with Naked2 (I have both, but prefer this version). Definitely get it if you find you are hitting pan on the neutral mattes you need to create looks and you're hitting pan! Buy it from Urban Decay, Sephora or Nordstrom.

7. Urban Decay Naked2: I think this palette is likely the most universally useful/flattering of the 3 Naked Palettes. Buy it from Urban Decay, Sephora or Nordstrom.

8. Urban Decay Naked3: This isn't for everyone, the rose-gold leaning of this palette is definitely easier for some to pull off than others. But, it's the Naked palette I reach for the most! Buy it from Urban Decay, Sephora or Nordstrom.

9. MAC Nordstrom Naturals Eyeshadow Palette: There are slightly different versions of this palette, but this one is my favorite. It has MAC shadows like Satin Taupe, Carbon and All That Glitters. For an amazing price! I use mine frequently. I have pictures taken, I'll try to get a full review up soon! Buy it from Nordstrom.

10. Stila Eyes Are the Window Shadow Palette in Soul: I have this in Soul and Spirit, and I use them a lot! I use Soul a little more frequently, that's why I've featured it here. Check out my Stila Eyes are the Window Shadow Palette Review and Swatches, you can buy it at Sephora, ULTA or Nordstrom.

Liquid cushion makeup has been a big hit lately with foundation, and Stila has brought it to eye liner! Their new Got Inked Cushion Eye Liner is a super pigmented liquid, it comes in a cushion that when pressed will release just the right amount of product. I strongly recommend using it with the La Quill Precision Eye Liner Brush, which is perfect for getting an even line of eye liner.

Bobbi Brown's New Greige Eye Shadow Palette Review and Swatches: Buy It!

I Bought It Affiliate Links

Bobbi Brown Greige Eye Shadow Palette

Hello, my name is Christine, and I am a Bobbi Brown Addict. I can not help it, I have a sudden, overwhelming urge to buy. all. the. Bobbi. Brown. I must have it!!

The Telluride collection recently came out (and, yes, I have some of it, I need to edit my pictures to write about it), but the Greige palette is where it's at. OMG. Yes, if you like Bobbi Brown, you need this palette (and The Secret to Standout Eyes, which is a great companion palette. They work very well together).

Bobbi Brown Greige Eye Shadow Palette

Just a quick glance at the shadows and you can see why I love this palette so much. It's classic Bobbi Brown. This is a smallish compact, the outside is a faux navy leather, and the inside is very sleek, and it includes a large mirror on the inside. It closes with a nice metallic click, and I don't worry that it would accidentally open when I travel with it. Note, I wouldn't necessarily carry it open in a big tote, but it would be just fine in a makeup bag to carry around every where.

Bobbi Brown Greige Eye Shadow Palette
Bobbi Brown Greige Eye Shadow Palette

The shadows are swatched over Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer, pictures in indirect natural sunlight.

You can see that they are pretty average in pigmentation for Bobbi Brown shadows, which is less than other department store brands like MAC. (Which, I have to say, are sometimes so pigmented that I do think they can be hard to use.)

To get the most out of these shadows, I actually layer 2 shadow primers. I start with a shadow primer base, usually my NYX Eye Shadow Base because it provides coverage and hides any visible blood vessels. Then I pat a light layer of e.l.f. Essential Glitter Primer on to my mobile lid, which is where I want my pigment to be the most... well, pigmented. It does take about 1 extra minute for the 2nd primer, but the results are well worth it! I can then layer on my shadows. The shadow lasts all day, looking perfect the entire time.

Bobbi Brown Greige Eye Shadow Palette Quick Look

Here's a peek at how I looked a few days ago using the palette. This is a very simple look, I have Greystone on my mobile lid, Brown Haze in my crease and Ivory above that on the brow bone. I lined my eyes with Bobbi Brown Perfectly Defined Gel Eyeliner in Chocolate Truffle and finished with Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye Mascara.

You can buy the Bobbi Brown Greige Eye Shadow Palette from Bobbi Brown, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, or Neiman Marcus.

Adding In Color: Mary Kay At Play

Product Sent for Review Sponsored Post

Mary Kay At Play

My first makeup was from Mary Kay. One of my mom's friends sold it, and when I was in junior high they did a make over on me and bought me everything. It was all kinds of awesome. But, as a teenager I couldn't afford the makeup on my own, so I reverted to drugstore finds, and I just never really found my way back to Mary Kay.

Recently the brand approached me about trying out their newest Mary Kay At Play collection, and I have to say, once again it is all kinds of awesome. This makeup is really made for those that don't have a lot of time for their makeup, but still want to look good. So, me.

This collection is full of fun color for summer, but it is in really easy, fast forms. Think all over color sticks, eye shadow crayons and blushes that come with a matching highlighter. Because, yes. I love a little highlighter.

Mary Kay At Play Lip & Cheek Stick Review and Swatch of Peach Pop and Razzleberry

First up is the Mary Kay At Play Lip & Cheek Stick. Most lip and cheek sticks like this are formulated with very little pigment or at the other extreme, they are very pigmented. I find the more pigmented versions to be a bit easier to work with, and that's what the At Play Lip & Cheek Stick is like.

You can apply the Lip & Cheek Stick directly onto your lip or cheek, or if you want a lighter look apply with a fingertip. The product is softer than a lipstick, so it applies pretty easily to your skin. I found that it blends very easily with a brush or fingertip and as a blush it lasts all day. It's perfect for a pretty flush on a hot summer day! It does add pretty color to lips as well, I like to follow it up with a little clear gloss. Peach Pop was my favorite with my fair skin, but I know Razzleberry will be amazing for those with darker complexions.

Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color Duo

The new Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color Duo blushes aren't part of the At Play collection, but were released recently as well. Each of these blushes are well pigmented, blend really well with a brush and last all day. My favorite part is that they each come with a matching highlighter, you can see that each highlighter is a little different so that they compliment the blushes perfectly. I've been obsessing over Juicy Guava (so pretty with Peach Pop on the lips!) it's the perfect peachy color for early summer.

I love that the blushes come in these little plastic cases. You can leave them be in that case or else they easily pop out to be put into another compact. Mary Kay has empty compacts that will fit them perfectly, or you could create your own palette with a big empty palette.

Mary Kay At Play Shadow & Liner

I think my favorite product is the Mary Kay At Play Shadow & Liner. Yes, we've all seen a lot of products like this in recent years. This is nothing new. However, I do think that this is one of the best shadow sticks out there, it performs just as well as my Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown shadow sticks, but is is fraction of the price. As an added bonus, these are double sided, so you get both the rounded shadow and a pointier liner/shadow in the same stick. Everything you need to create a pretty eye look in one!

I use this over a basic shadow primer. I tried many different ones, and it didn't seem to matter which I used, even just a concealer was enough. With a prepped lid, this shadow looked perfect at the end of long days, 14-15 hours without creasing or fading.

I have to admit that I've been using these shadow sticks almost every day for the last few days and haven't taken very many pictures. I'll share the few looks that I did take pictures of, but in general I've found that the liners can easily do double duty as a liner or shadow. It's easiest to draw directly onto your skin and then blend a bit with your fingertip. If you're going to add in a powder shadow, apply the powder after the shadow stick, everything will blend much more easily that way.

My favorite ways to use these sticks are as a fun punch of color right at the lash line, or the Caramellow and Rebel Rose duos both work really well for a complete look. I want to use the Iced Lilac for a purple smoky eye sometime soon, but just haven't had the occasion to wear it yet!

Mary Kay At Play Mint to Be Eye Look

In this look my lid is washed with Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color in Rosegold and Driftwood is in my crease. I used the liner end of Mint to Be on my upper and lower lash lines, and then applied Mary Kay Eyeliner in Black closer to lash line, then blended very slightly with a stiff angled brush. I finished the look with a coat of Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara.

I do want to make a comment about ordering from Mary Kay. In the past you had to have a consultant. I admit that was part of the reason I've avoided the brand in the last few years, I'm already overwhelmed with product, I didn't want someone trying to sell me stuff! However, I purchased a few products to use with the At Play products, the Mineral Eye Shadows, Eye Liner and Ultimate Mascara, to use in this post. When I ordered from the Mary Kay website the shipping was super fast, and while technically my order was through a consultant, Mary Kay did everything for my order. So, if you’ve been worried about being contacted to buy things, try online ordering first!

How to Pick the Best Eye Shadow Shades For Your Eye Color: Make Your Eyes Pop!

Nothing to Disclose

How to Pick the Best Eye Shadow Shades For Your Eye Color: Make Your Eyes Pop!

Last winter I wrote and epic post (as in, this took me months of Photoshop drawings and reading and researching), about how to apply eye shadow for your eye shape. And while applying eye shadow to complement the shape of your eye is great, you also need to have the right eye shadows for your eye color.

There's a little trick to picking out the correct eye shadows for your eye color. Get it right, and it can really help your eyes pop!

Eye Colors on the Color Wheel

The Color Wheel is the answer to all of your makeup shade picking issues. For eye shadow colors, you'll first need to know where your actual eye color falls on the wheel. (Note, this is a bit more obvious with a darker version of the color wheel.)

Blue Eyes & Green Eyes: These two are pretty obvious, they fall in the blue and green sections of the color wheel.

Brown Eyes: Brown eyes have shades of red and orange.

Hazel Eyes: Hazel eyes typically have brown and green in them, and while you can wear colors meant for both eye colors, you really can bring out certain colors in your eyes depending upon your clothes and makeup.

How to use the color wheel to pick eye shadow colors that work for your eyes

Once you know where your eye color falls on the color wheel, there are a few ways to pick colors. To really make your eyes pop, head directly across the color wheel for a complementary color. For Brown this is Blue. You can also choose analogous colors, a few shades all in a row that will work well together. So, colors that surround your eye color, for brown think about similar neutrals.

I have recommendations for each eye color, but you'll need to head over to the specific posts to get them!

L'oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quads: Review and Swatches

L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quads: Review and Swatches

As much as I consider myself a drugstore makeup girl, I've always been a bit (or... maybe more than a bit?) snobby about my eye shadows. I've found a few shades and formulations here and there that have worked well for me, but in large part I've ignored drugstore eye shadows simply because they haven't worked as well for me as more expensive brands.

L'Oreal is working really hard to change my ways!

Have you seen these new Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quads in stores? About 10 days ago I saw them at my local Target and wanted to buy out the whole display, they are so pretty! And I probably have done so, except L'Oreal had told me that morning a box was coming my way. And I pretty much was in awe of all the pretty quads the moment I opened the box!

L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quads: Review and Swatches

The collections of shades within the quads are meant to work together to create a subtle, smoky or bold look. They contain what L'Oreal is calling a "Color Boost Technology" to make the colors more vibrant while the shadow itself is creamy and very blendable.

I've swatched all of the shadows, and I was really impressed with them during that process. I've only had time to use a few of the quads for looks over the last week or so, but they really do have much more intense color, apply easily and are much more blendable than other drugstore shadows. (Yes, including ones I've used from L'Oreal in the past.) The shadows also lasted just as long as my higher end shadows. I think they're definitely great shadows, and if any of the colors grab your eye you should snap up a quad!

L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 230 Perpetual Nude Review and Swatch
L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 240 Treasured Bronze Review and Swatch
L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 250 Absolute Taupe Review and Swatch
L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 260 Incredible Grey and Swatch
L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 270 Unforgettable Lilac Review and Swatch
L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 280 Eternal Blue Review and Swatch
L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 290 Emerald Conquest Review and Swatch
L'Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects Eye Shadow Quad in 300 Rose Nude Review and Swatch

All of the quads were swatched on to a dry arm (no primer), so their vibrancy is pretty amazing! The only shadow I was a bit disappointed in was the highlight from 290 Emerald Conquest, which is pretty glittery/powdery. With a glitter primer (I have great glitter primers from both Too Faced and ELF) the highlight is really very pretty and stays put. It just needs to have a glitter primer underneath.

While I've been using the more neutral quads already for day looks, Perpetual Nude and Absolute Taupe, I know that I'll be using Unforgettable Lilac and Eternal Blue a lot this fall. (Am I the only one craving purple and navy accents in my eye looks?)

Which of these quads have you snagged already? Have any of them caught your eye?

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Review and Swatches

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Review and Swatches

In case you haven't noticed I'm a huge fan of Too Faced (and this week you'll see a lot of Too Faced, I have a lot of reviews coming up), and their brand new Cat Eyes palette is pretty amazing. I can't say enough about it! It's so amazing that we're dedicating a special edition of Makeup Wars to this palette today. You'll see looks and tutorials from our bloggers (here's my Too Faced Cat Eyes Tutorial), though you shouldn't be surprised to see a lot more looks using this palette all over the web for weeks to come.

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Review and Swatches
One of the most interesting things about this palette is the wide range of colors. Yes, there are 3 very light colors. They're so light that on my super pale skin they don't show up very well (as you can see in my swatch pictures below).

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Swatches

The real reason go get this palette is the medium and dark shades. The light shades are well pigmented and great neutrals, though they just don't show up well on my skin in pictures. The purples are my favorites, though the neutral brown/bronze shades in the day set are also very pretty! The silvery-blue of Kitty Glitter is pretty but powdery. I recommend using it over a glitter primer such as Shadow Insurance Glitter Glue.
