CoverGirl Flamed Out Collection Review, Swatches and Tutorial
I've been having a lot of fun with eye shadows the last couple of days, courtesy of CoverGirl and ULTA. They asked me if they could send me some of this summer's Flamed Out collection (have you seen it? I admit I've been drooling over the displays in stores for a bit now), I would review the products and put together a look. They'd even send me extras for a giveaway! How can a girl say no to that???

Flamed out is this summer's collection from CoverGirl. The colors are pretty bold, and they are "inspired by fire, the bold new flaming femme look takes your eyes from flames to ashes." The colors include red, pink, gray, gold, blue and green. Some of the colors are pretty bold for me, but I've been inspired over and over by blue and green eye looks recently, so I've been dying to try some of the colors!

When my products arrived, I only had a few shades (and none of the bright blue/green ones I wanted to try out), so I pretty much ran to ULTA the moment I opened my package. It's a good thing that I have an understanding husband! CoverGirl is Buy One get one 50% Off (until Friday, June 28th) including the Flamed Out Collection, and I admit that I bought a lot of the colors! I don't have every color (yes, I did manage to use some control), but I have almost all of them.

I have a million and one pictures of the colors, a tutorial for the blue and green eye I created, and even a giveaway! Read on to see more!

CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencils Review
I've been a big sucker for shadow pencils recently, and it seems like the ones being released this year are much better than the ones that were released even 2-3 years ago. The colors are vivid, blendable and once they "set" the shadow lasts for a long time!

The CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencils are meant to be a gel shadow and liner in one product. The color is pretty soft, but sharpens easily (you'll need to use a regular sharpener since they come in wood, they aren't automatic pencils). I found that it is pretty easy to use the color near your lash line for a thick liner look, but then simply smudge it up onto your lid or color in your lid to use it as a shadow. It applies very smoothly, blending with some gentle finger tapping is easy, and once it "sets" you're good to go for about 8-10 hours.

The interesting thing about these pencils is that when they apply you get a "cooling" feeling. It isn't uncomfortable, and it can last for a good 20 minutes or so. I did find that my eyes couldn't handle the cooling if any product got in them (I tried lining a little too close to my waterline) and the result was watering eyes for about 20 minutes. It didn't burn, there wasn't irritation, but it definitely made liner application a bit difficult! So, use them to line around your eye, but not into the water line.

I had the same color intensity and staying power with these pencil whether they were used with an eye shadow primer or without. I also used them under the powder shadows to increase intensity and staying power, which worked great, but was best over a primer. So, as usual I suggest using them with a lid primer!

The available colors (note the pencils are labelled with numbers, not the name. The name only appears on the wrapper):
• Silver Flame 300
• Crystal Flame 305
• Red-Hot Flame 310
• Lime Green Flame 315 (I could not get the pencil in the pic to show up green, but you get a good color representation in the swatch picture below)
• Hot-Pink Flame 320
• Gold Flame 330
• Ashen Glow Flame 335
• Ginger Flame 340
• Ice Flame 345
• Melted Caramel Flame 350

CoverGirl Flamed Out Eye Shadow Review
The Flamed Out Shadow Pots are the most eye catching part of the collection to me. They have vivid color in a great sized pot, and I can't wait to start depotting them into a palette! The pots have screw on lids and the shadows are pretty large. While the colors are well pigmented, some of them are a bit powdery and to avoid fallout it is best to press them on to your lid rather than brushing. As well, they do much better over a primer with a bit of "grab", with better color and much longer wear (10 hours vs about 5 hours for me). I've swatched them here with Too Faced Shadow Insurance, which is my favorite "sticky" shadow primer and you can see that the difference that primer makes.

The available colors (again, the pots are only labelled with numbers, the names are on the store displays):
• Molten Black 300
• Fired-up Pink 305
• Lime Light 310
• Sapphire Flare 315
• Turquoise Glow 325
• Melted Caramel 330
• Melted Gold 330
• Charcoal 335
• Blazing Purple 340
• Red-Hot 345
• Blazing White 350
• Scorching Cocoa 355

(Note that those were the names/numbers provided to me, and they match what is on the CoverGirl website, but I had a pot numbered 320 and I'm pretty sure that's Melted Gold. I've labelled it 320 in all of the pics to avoid too much confusion with 2 #330.)

CoverGirl Flamed Out Mascara Review
The Flamed Out Mascara is one of my new favorites, I've been using the waterproof version for a couple of weeks, though I was also sent the regular version. I'm not sure if this is a limited edition product or if it will be a new member of the permanent collection, which I hope it is!

The big deal here is the shape of the brush. I've used similarly curved mascara brushes in the past, the idea is that the bumps will help your outer and inner lashes to get a little more mascara and do that pretty "flare" thing. This is the first brush I've used that actually does this correctly, where the inside part still touches your lashes and the bumps are just enough to flare things out a bit.

The mascara itself is a little thick, and I've used 1 coat with great length and volume results. Be careful with applying a second coat, since it does tend to get clumpy pretty easily. The mascara doesn't flake or smudge on me, and I still have a nice curl at the end of the day! I've found that the waterproof version is very easy to remove as well (I actually didn't realize I'd accidentally purchased the waterproof for about a week, definitely a good sign!)

Available colors:
• Very Black Blaze 300
• Black Blaze 305
• Black/Brown Blaze 310
• Brown Blaze 315

Blue and Green Eye Shadow Look Tutorial

I fully admit that I've been stuck on blue and green lately, and I was really excited to try out these colors together! While my pictures of Turquoise Glow are pretty representative of their color, in person it really is just amazingly pretty. Go look at it in person at your local ULTA, you won't be able to resist it!

Turquoise Glow Eye Shadow Tutorial
I started with eyes that had been prepped with eye shadow primer. I'm using Too Faced Shadow Insurance since it has a little bit of "grab" which helps to reduce the fall out with these shadows.

First I applied Turquoise Glow 325 to the inner half of my eye lid, up to and slightly over the crease line. To get more intense color I lightly pressed the color into place with a brush.

I then repeated this step with Lime Light 310 into the outer half of my lid.

Colorful CoverGirl Eye Shadow DIY
I then took the same brush and just pressed it once into the inner corner of my lid for a little green using Lime Light 310.

Next I took a pencil brush and put a very small amount of Blazing White 350 right on the line of where my shadow ended. I went over this area a few times (back and forth like a windshield wiper) to blend the shadow up onto my brow bone very lightly. The Blazing White 350 added just a little bit of a glow.

How to get a pretty green and blue eye shadow look with drugstore makeup
Next I lined around the outside of my eyes on the upper and lower lid with the Lime Green Flame 315 pencil. Be sure to stay out of your water line, which I thought I had done, but this is when my eyes started watering slightly from the cooling. It didn't hurt, but was annoying when trying to line my eyes with black (which is why I don't have as much black on at the end as I was trying for. It probably turned out for the best, but just don't get the pencil into your waterline!)

Next I grabbed a brush (this is a slightly larger pencil brush than I used before) and smudged out the pencil both on top and the bottom.

Quick and easy blue and green eye shadow look
Finally, I'm done with color! I wanted some fairly intense black liner that I could smudge in my lash lines, so I grabbed the CoverGirl LiquiLine Blast eye liner in black. I've smudged it quite a bit into my upper lash line, though it isn't as intense on the lower lash line. Note that it isn't perfect, but it doesn't really have to be with this look.

Finally I applied a coat of the Flamed Out Mascara in Very Black Blaze 300 and I'm done!

Super pretty eye makeup!

  6. Melted Gold is probably the only shadow I'd really want to play with, but honestly, the shadow sticks are so intriguing! I love the easy of applicability, mainly because I still apply all my makeup on transit to work, and having a simple cream shadow in a stick just makes my life 10x easier!
