Flamed out is this summer's collection from CoverGirl. The colors are pretty bold, and they are "inspired by fire, the bold new flaming femme look takes your eyes from flames to ashes." The colors include red, pink, gray, gold, blue and green. Some of the colors are pretty bold for me, but I've been inspired over and over by blue and green eye looks recently, so I've been dying to try some of the colors!
When my products arrived, I only had a few shades (and none of the bright blue/green ones I wanted to try out), so I pretty much ran to ULTA the moment I opened my package. It's a good thing that I have an understanding husband! CoverGirl is Buy One get one 50% Off (until Friday, June 28th) including the Flamed Out Collection, and I admit that I bought a lot of the colors! I don't have every color (yes, I did manage to use some control), but I have almost all of them.
I have a million and one pictures of the colors, a tutorial for the blue and green eye I created, and even a giveaway! Read on to see more!
The CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencils are meant to be a gel shadow and liner in one product. The color is pretty soft, but sharpens easily (you'll need to use a regular sharpener since they come in wood, they aren't automatic pencils). I found that it is pretty easy to use the color near your lash line for a thick liner look, but then simply smudge it up onto your lid or color in your lid to use it as a shadow. It applies very smoothly, blending with some gentle finger tapping is easy, and once it "sets" you're good to go for about 8-10 hours.
The interesting thing about these pencils is that when they apply you get a "cooling" feeling. It isn't uncomfortable, and it can last for a good 20 minutes or so. I did find that my eyes couldn't handle the cooling if any product got in them (I tried lining a little too close to my waterline) and the result was watering eyes for about 20 minutes. It didn't burn, there wasn't irritation, but it definitely made liner application a bit difficult! So, use them to line around your eye, but not into the water line.
I had the same color intensity and staying power with these pencil whether they were used with an eye shadow primer or without. I also used them under the powder shadows to increase intensity and staying power, which worked great, but was best over a primer. So, as usual I suggest using them with a lid primer!
The available colors (note the pencils are labelled with numbers, not the name. The name only appears on the wrapper):
• Silver Flame 300
• Crystal Flame 305
• Red-Hot Flame 310
• Lime Green Flame 315 (I could not get the pencil in the pic to show up green, but you get a good color representation in the swatch picture below)
• Hot-Pink Flame 320
• Gold Flame 330
• Ashen Glow Flame 335
• Ginger Flame 340
• Ice Flame 345
• Melted Caramel Flame 350
The available colors (again, the pots are only labelled with numbers, the names are on the store displays):
• Molten Black 300
• Fired-up Pink 305
• Lime Light 310
• Sapphire Flare 315
• Turquoise Glow 325
• Melted Caramel 330
• Melted Gold 330
• Charcoal 335
• Blazing Purple 340
• Red-Hot 345
• Blazing White 350
• Scorching Cocoa 355
(Note that those were the names/numbers provided to me, and they match what is on the CoverGirl website, but I had a pot numbered 320 and I'm pretty sure that's Melted Gold. I've labelled it 320 in all of the pics to avoid too much confusion with 2 #330.)
The big deal here is the shape of the brush. I've used similarly curved mascara brushes in the past, the idea is that the bumps will help your outer and inner lashes to get a little more mascara and do that pretty "flare" thing. This is the first brush I've used that actually does this correctly, where the inside part still touches your lashes and the bumps are just enough to flare things out a bit.
The mascara itself is a little thick, and I've used 1 coat with great length and volume results. Be careful with applying a second coat, since it does tend to get clumpy pretty easily. The mascara doesn't flake or smudge on me, and I still have a nice curl at the end of the day! I've found that the waterproof version is very easy to remove as well (I actually didn't realize I'd accidentally purchased the waterproof for about a week, definitely a good sign!)
Available colors:
• Very Black Blaze 300
• Black Blaze 305
• Black/Brown Blaze 310
• Brown Blaze 315
I fully admit that I've been stuck on blue and green lately, and I was really excited to try out these colors together! While my pictures of Turquoise Glow are pretty representative of their color, in person it really is just amazingly pretty. Go look at it in person at your local ULTA, you won't be able to resist it!
First I applied Turquoise Glow 325 to the inner half of my eye lid, up to and slightly over the crease line. To get more intense color I lightly pressed the color into place with a brush.
I then repeated this step with Lime Light 310 into the outer half of my lid.
Next I took a pencil brush and put a very small amount of Blazing White 350 right on the line of where my shadow ended. I went over this area a few times (back and forth like a windshield wiper) to blend the shadow up onto my brow bone very lightly. The Blazing White 350 added just a little bit of a glow.
Next I grabbed a brush (this is a slightly larger pencil brush than I used before) and smudged out the pencil both on top and the bottom.
Finally I applied a coat of the Flamed Out Mascara in Very Black Blaze 300 and I'm done!
Great news! One reader will get a selection of products from the Flamed Out Collection (I don't know which ones, the box is sitting here sealed) with a $100 gift certificate to ULTA. The contest is open to those in the US and over 18 years of age (pesky sweepstakes laws!), only entries made through the Rafflecopter widget are eligible.
Don't forget that CoverGirl is Buy One get one 50% Off (until Friday, June 28th) at ULTA!
