Quick Day to Night Look: Loose Curls and Red Lips

I'm not really one of those people that goes out often. I'm a bit of a homebody, and I have 2 young girls who thrive on their regular routine. But if I am going out, you bet I like to look cute! But, I need to do it on not much time.

Read on to see how I can transition my normal "day" look to a cute night time look, complete with different hair and red lips, in about 15 minutes.

Quick Day to Night Look: Loose Curls and Red Lips

Here's an exciting starting point: a natural eye look, light foundation and lip balm with straight hair! I've been out doing things with my girls all day, running exciting errands like running to the grocery store. My lippie is just a quick swipe of Carmex Original Lip Balm Stick, which has been living in my pocket all day. I love that it is super hydrating and provides long-lasting wear (thanks to Cocoa Seed Butter and Candelilla Wax), and has SPF 15. I'll be using it a lot this summer while swimming, it is water resistant for up to 80 minutes.

My first thing to do when switching up my look is always working on my hair first. My hair was blown straight in the am, and heat protection was added then. I grab random chunks of hair and wrap them around a 1 1/4" curling iron. Note that I leave the ends hanging out, and I try to kind of spiral the hair on the rod. I hold it for about 10 seconds and then gently let out the curl. As the curl comes out, I twist the curl a bit, making it a bit more irregular. Once all of my hair has been curled, I spritz on a light mist of flexible hold hair spray, and right before I'm done with my entire look I'll run my fingers gently through the curls to break them up a bit.

Because my look relies on a statement lip, I'm going to keep my eyes fairly simple with the neutral shadows. A smoky eye is pretty hard to really pull off with a red lip! I decided to just amp things up a bit by applying a matte black shadow with a smudge brush, just gently rubbing the brush at the base of my lower lashes. I already have a taupe shadow on my upper lid up to the crease, a slightly darker shade in the crease, and black liner smudged along the lash line. And as usual, a lot of mascara!

Next, it's time for lips! I've tried almost every balm and lip primer out there, but always had trouble finding one that fulfills all of my needs. If they are more of a lotion than a balm, my lipstick will slide right off. Some that are more
"sticky" aren't hydrating enough for my lips, which makes my already small lips look even smaller. After much trial and error, I've finally found the perfect product to wear under my red lippie. It's Carmex Lip Balm. Yes, really!

Carmex is hydrating, but not goopy. It has a slightly waxy consistency that helps to grab on to your lip products and keep them in place. I apply Carmex Lip Balm generously to the lips, and then I blot once with a tissue and it is perfect! My lips are hydrated, and the prep is perfect for my lippie, whether I'm wearing lip gloss, or lipstick. It even comes in flavors like strawberry and cherry. The best part is, they are super affordable. You can pick one up for just $1.59 at drugstores and mass retailers nationwide including WalMart, Walgreens and CVS.

Next I apply a red lippie. This is a very pigmented balm rather than a regular lipstick. The application is much less precise and it is a softer look that still makes a big impact.

I always save my face for the last bit of makeup touch up, because once my lips and eyes are ready for going out I often don't need to do much to my face. First I pat my makeup sponge all over my face, it soaks up a bit of oil and smooths out any creasing or smudging in my makeup. I also add just a touch of blush to my cheeks. I usually don't need much to help balance out my eyes and lips.

Once the look is complete, I change clothes and I'm ready! Including my hair, this took me 15 minutes, and that includes taking blog pictures. Once I’m ready to go, I make sure to throw my Carmex Lip Balm and lipstick in to my clutch for touch-ups throughout the night! What is your go-to night look?

This post is a collaboration with Carmex, but the opinions are all my own. So are the additional Carmex tubes that I've stocked up on after realizing that it was the key to a perfect lip! To learn more about Carmex Lip Balm, visit

  1. I haven't used Carmex in a long time. I like your makeup and hair here, and your necklace!

  3. I love this look! I'd love to know how you are able to curl your hair so quickly. You've mentioned before that you have very thick hair. I do too and it always feels like it takes me forever to curl my hair (I have almost no natural bend). I always read you should take 1" sections, but it feels like there are about a million of them on my head. Do you have any tips or tricks for curling thick hair quickly?

  4. I have found that I actually need larger sections than I thought. You can kind of see about how much hair I grabbed in the images above, but I'll often lightly slide the hair off of my curling iron/rod, and keep it rolled up. I grab a small butterfly clip and clip it up to cool off. Doing that seems to help hold the curl longer. I hope that helps!
