Fall Drugstore Beauty Update with CVS

I know that I'm not the only one that can't walk into a drugstore without spending copious amounts of time browsing the beauty section. This is particularly difficult at my local CVS, where the makeup end caps seem to be rapidly multiplying. There are new product displays and exclusive brands (such as Nuance and MUA) every time I turn around! It is hard to walk out of there with just the items I was planning to buy, but at least I collect a lot of CVS ExtraBucks! Since CVS is very near my house, it's easy to just pop in when I'm out running errands. Which means that I'm in there pretty often.


Recently I made a trip to CVS to update my makeup for the fall makeup trends, and I thought it would be great to shared what I purchased. I probably spent a good hour wandering around my CVS, I really did feel like every time I turned around there was another brand display to look at! More than anything, that's what made my trip so long. I would think I was done, turn a corner and find an area with 5 new product displays. Because of this, I love to go and check out CVS for new makeup products, they always have the latest releases!



Trend #1: Amazing Liner, Smokey Day Look
All over the runways for Fall 2016, you found eyeliner that was different. Whether it was a smudged smokey eye or a winged out cat liner, no one really had a simply lined eye.

There are some great products out there to get this look! The first one is L'Oreal's Smokissime Powder Eyeliner. It is super easy to use, the tip is a sponge and it releases a powder similar to shadow, but it is a big more directed in where it goes and it is more pigmented. You can line your eyes, use it over your entire lid if you want... I find it is best to use a lighter neutral shadow all over my lid, then I line my top and bottom lash line with this, a thinner line on the bottom. I smudge it a bit with a shadow brush.

Sometimes I do use a regular liner with these as well, just for a very intense line right at the lash. My drugstore pick for a great liner to smudge like this is Maybelline Lasting Drama, which I grabbed in Glazed Toffee, a dark brown. It is almost gel-like, I found it very easy to smudge but after about 30 seconds it stays put. So, smudge fast, then it will stay perfect all day!


Here you can see 2 different liquid liners that I picked up. On the left is CoverGirl Intensify Me, which has a flat tip. I love that you can twist it and get a totally different look. On the right is L'Oreal Voluminous Liner Noir, which has a very long and thin tip. The liner pen itself is also triangular shaped with little parts to put your fingers, so the liner is really showing you exactly how to hold it to get a better cat eye. I'm not great at getting the tip even, but I've been practicing with this liner and already I'm getting much better.



Trend #2: Dark Red for Fall
Merlot, Cranberry, Garnet, no matter what you call it, every fall dark jewel tones are everywhere and red is always the best for makeup. I look for it when buying both lip and nail colors. I've heard that the new Maybelline Color Jolts are amazing! Friends have told me that the color pay off is great and they last for hours without being sticky. This one is #35, Berry Naughty.

I'm also obsessing over the new Essie Gel Couture Colors. It is a long wear polish that lasts 5-7 days without chips! I have both Model Clicks and Spiked with Style (pictured here), and I've been wearing them over and over.



Trend #3: Bronze Eye Shadows
In addition to the typical jewel tones, this fall is all about bronze eye shadows. Luckily, this color is pretty easy to find! I did find a few singles that looked great, but I prefer to find it in a palette, where I can use the coordinating shadows for a complete look. I found 3 great gold-bronze palettes, which were well pigmented and would be perfect for fall!

Trend #4: Nude Lips
Nude lips aren't really new, but I feel like they're everywhere this fall, I'm seeing more than ever before! All of my nude lippies at home are a nude-pink color, but this fall I want a peachy-nude tone. I grabbed Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in 630 Seduction and NYX Butter Lipstick in Fun Size Mini.



Trend #5: Glowy Skin
Glowy skin isn't really a new trend, but it was all over the Fall/Winter 2016 Runways like never before! Typically glow like this is seen on the Spring/Summer shows. A slew of new highlighting products have come out recently, and I'm pretty excited to try out a few of them.

First, Maybelline Facestudio Master Strobing Stick Illuminating Highlighter is very easy to just draw directly on to your face, then blend with fingers or a brush. You can use it over other makeup, or layer it under your foundation for a more subtle, lit from within glow.

I also really love that the Maybelline Facestudio Master Contour Face Contouring Kit has a matte bronzer, pretty blush and a powder highlighter all in one palette. The shimmer of this highlighter is more subtle than the Strobing Stick, but it's just enough to catch the light when you apply it to your cheekbones.


Trend #6: Long and Lush Lashes
Everyone always wants long and thick lashes, but this season a ton of new mascara products have come out to help you get the lashes of your dreams, without having to use falsies! I grabbed three new products to try out.

First, I grabbed the new L'Oreal Voluminous Feline Mascara, I grabbed waterproof because I'm always on the hunt for amazing waterproof mascaras! The new L'Oreal Voluminous Lash Primer is meant to be layered under any mascara. I've already tried the primer and it really does work wonders. Maybelline Falsies Push Up Angel Mascara was my last choice, it has a molded plastic comb very similar to L'Oreal Butterfly, I expect it to be great for layering and keeping clumps at bay.

The Drugstore Makeup Kit: My Picks

It's been a long time since I put together an entire makeup kit. In my normal life, I use a mixture of high and low products, though many of my every day staples are ones that you can buy at your local drugstore. If a $10 product works just as well (or better) than a $30 product, why spend the extra money?

When shopping for my drugstore makeup kit, I headed for my local CVS Pharmacy. It’s offering more in beauty than ever before and has really evolved to become a one-stop shop for pharmacy and beauty needs. My local store has every one of my normal staple items, carries a huge range of brands like NYX, L'Oreal and ELF, and their exclusive brands such as Nuance Salma Hayek, and Makeup Academy (MUA) have great must-haves also. It doesn't hurt that there are new release displays every time I turn around!

One of my favorite things about CVS is the Beauty Club, which earns you money off of future purchases! You can earn $5 for every $50 you spend, or even more ExtraBucks with special offers. I love checking my receipt as I leave the store to see how many ExtraBucks I earned for my next visit!



My Picks:
1. Maybelline Dream BB Fresh: This is a great CC Cream! It has just the right amount of coverage, is a light weight moisturizer and blends into your skin beautifully.

2. L'Oreal Visible Lift CC Eye Concealer: A medium to full concealer that simply does not cake!

3. L'Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Powder: I love a good translucent powder, and this one is finely milled and does a great job of soaking up any excess oil. I often have one in my purse!

4. Maybelline Facestudio Master Contour Face Contouring Kit: A matte bronzer, light blush and just right highlighter all in one spot.

5. NYX Eye Shadow Base: This is my normal go-to shadow primer. It covers up my lids, helps my shadow blend better and last all day, and it only takes a few seconds to apply.

6. L'Oreal Paris Cosmetics Stylist Prep and Shape Brow Liner Kit: As I've gotten older, I've come to depend upon my brow products more and more. A well defined brow can go a long way towards making my makeup look amazing! This palette from L'Oreal is one of my favorites, it has a wax and just right powder.

7. L'Oreal Colour Riche Eye Shadow Quads in Boudoir Charme: The Colour Riche quads are my favorite drugstore shadows. They are well pigmented and look much more expensive than they really are! I've found that 4 colors is great, it gives me the chance to create a few looks with the same quad, but it isn't overwhelming.

8. Maybelline Lasting Drama in Glazed Toffee: I love this eye liner! The formula is gel-like, it is very easy to smudge right after application but after about 30 seconds it stays put. So, smudge fast, then it will stay perfect all day!

9. L'Oreal Voluminous Lash Primer and L'Oreal Voluminous Feline Mascara: I have a combination of products to really give me long and lush lashes. In general, I've found that any mascara from L'Oreal, CoverGirl or Maybelline is a good buy!

10. Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor in 630 Seduction: A great peachy-nude color that will work for a variety of occasions.

My Favorite Beauty Splurge vs Steal Products

Today for Makeup Wars we are sharing our favorite splurges and steals. I thought that rather than just showcasing a few items that are dupes, I would do something that a lot of readers have asked for via email lately, create a couple of complete makeup kits!

Here's a peek at how I would create these kits, I'm going for a fairly neutral look, but with a fun, bright pink lip. In real life, I use a combination of products from each of these price points. When applying, note that I apply products in the order that I've listed them here, and I usually require 2 color correctors (green for any redness, pink/peach for undereye circles), though I don't have a luxe version of the green. All of these products are ones that I have and use myself!

A Makeup Intro: What I Think Teens Should Start With In A Basic Makeup Kit

Recently I've gotten quite a few emails and messages from young teens asking me to make them a basic makeup kit, similar to the one I put together in my Teen Makeup Kit post. Somehow about 2 years (!!) have passed since I first published that post, so it is time for an update! Today I'll share my basic recommendations, and in the next few days I'll share a post that has some specific recommendations for the questions I was asked. Finally, I've even found an amazing 14 year old who is going to share (with her mom's permission) her favorite makeup products as well!


First, I've been asked about how to get permission to wear makeup. I strongly recommend to teens that you just initiate a conversation with your parents about makeup if you're interested in it. A big part about being allowed to do things as a teen is developing and keeping your parents' trust. If they can trust that you'll do what you say, and not do things they don't want you to do, then you really will be allowed to do quite a bit more and will have a better relationship with your parents. Having a discussion before just starting to wear makeup will show your parents that you are mature and reasonable! It makes us parents feel like we've done a good job with you, we want to reward you for that. (Pro Tip: This works for everything, not just makeup.)

So, for me, I had this talk with my mom when I was 12 and about to start 7th grade. I think my mom initiated it, not me. She said that she'd let me start wearing makeup gradually. At first I was allowed light pink nail polish, lip gloss and mascara. When I was in 8th grade I was allowed to start wearing more makeup. We were very open about it and because I earned their trust, my parents let me wear makeup earlier than they probably would have otherwise.

The moral of the story is that an open discussion and earning your parents' trust is definitely worth it!



My suggested reading! Both of these books go over basic makeup, beauty and hygiene topics. I recommend them for all pre-teens, especially Bonding Over Beauty. I would get that one for any girl 12 and up, even if she isn't interested in makeup yet. There's a lot about puberty changes and hygiene. There are a lot of questions that teens have and are embarrassed to ask. Here are the answers!

Prepare your skin

I always start by prepping my skin for makeup after washing my face. Whether your skin is oily, dry or combination, you need a moisturizing lotion. I always use one that includes sunscreen.

Because teenagers usually have much more even skin tone, I don't recommend a lot of coverage all over. I really wouldn't start using a foundation until you're older, it just isn't needed. If you do need a little coverage, a BB Cream is great. So, plain lotion with SPF for most days, but if your skin needs a little more coverage I'd try a BB Cream with SPF.

When picking a lotion or BB Cream, a light lotion with SPF works for pretty much everyone. Don't use a lot, about the size of a pea is generally enough for me with my combination skin. I spread it around and then pat it into my skin some. (I don't know why, I was taught this by a makeup artist at Sephora, but it really does make it look better!)

For a BB Cream, you need to get the right shade for your skin. This can definitely be tricky, I strongly recommend looking around on-line at blog swatches of the shades to narrow it down before heading to the store. If you want a higher end product, go to Sephora and let them pick it out for you. If a drugstore shade, many stores have good return policies (such as CVS) and will let you bring back a product if the color didn't work for you.

Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream (at ULTA or Amazon), there's also a Dream Pure BB Cream, which is the same thing but geared toward those with acne, (at ULTA) it has added Salicylic Acid.

Enhance Your Eyes

Before finishing my face makeup, I do my eyes. Really, I'm not so great at avoiding fallout of eyeshadow onto my cheek. So by doing my eyes before the rest of my face, it lets me wipe off any shadow without ruining makeup I've already applied.

I always start with an eye primer. Because I'm so fair I like to use one by NYX that has quite a bit of coverage, it hides all of my visible blood vessels. If this isn't an issue then you should be able to use any other eye primer. If you are planning on using a glittery eye shadow, I recommend a glitter primer, ELF and Too Faced both make good ones.

Once my primer is on, I'll apply shadow. There's a lot of information about how to choose the right color shadow for your eyes or apply shadow for your eye shape. I didn't start wearing shadow until I was about 17 or 18, but if you're interested in wearing some I'd start with lighter, neutral shades. My favorite shadows are well pigmented, blend easily and last all day. I don't like dipping into a shadow and have a ton of powder flying everywhere.

My favorite brands for shadows are MAC, Too Faced, Urban Decay, L'Oreal, CoverGirl and Wet n Wild. I also like the NYX single eye shadows (not the palettes, they are much more powdery), and Stila is also good.

Eye liner is definitely an optional thing at this point, again I didn't start wearing liner until I was in my late teen's, really more into my early 20's. I do not recommend thick black liner on the upper and lower lash lines. It will make your eyes look much smaller! I basically do what Cara does in this blended eyeliner tutorial over on Maskcara. I would go with a brown or grey instead of black and apply right into the lash line. Blend it well with a smudge brush.

Finally, mascara! I wore only mascara for most of high school. It's a very pretty and fresh look, and really can still draw a lot of attention to your eyes. I strongly recommend using an eyelash curler before applying mascara. My favorite is from Tweezerman, and I don't recommend using a cheap curler. You'll get lashes stuck in it and yes, it hurts as much as it sounds like! It's better to not use a curler at all than to use one that hurts!

There are a lot of great mascaras out there. If you have long lashes use a volumizing mascara. If you have thick lashes, use a lengthening mascara. I would only use waterproof mascara if you really need waterproof, it is hard to remove completely and you'll end up with residue stuck on your lashes.

Finally, brows. They're very important for looking pulled together. Most teens probably do have some need for plucking (read more about how I pluck my eyebrows), but I really recommend having some restraint. A lot of girls go crazy with the tweezers and end up with much thinner brows than they should have, without the right arch, and they don't always grow back! Fuller is always better, especially since they will thin as you age. Having no eye brows in your 30s is not fun, I'm sure! When in doubt find an esthetician to shape your brows and just clean things up in between periodic visits to keep you on track.

Usually a little filling in will make your brows look more polished. You want to lightly fill them in, mostly in areas that are a little more skimpy. Your brows should not be drawn on or made to look very stylized a'la YouTube. It just looks strange in real life. If you have light brows you need to go a little darker with your shade, and if your brows are dark go with a lighter fill.

Cover Up Skin Imperfections

As a teen pretty much the only imperfections that I needed to cover up were my blemishes. I would start with a redness corrector on blemishes (read more about how to use a color corrector), and then cover it up with a light layer of a liquid concealer that is the same shade as your skin. Set it with a little powder.

Finish The Look

The rest of this list is even more optional than the things above, and it really depends a lot on your preferences. Don't want blush? Maybe try some bronzer. If you want a little extra glow, try a little highlighter. Everyone does need a lippie, but that can be simple plain chapstick to keep your lips hydrated, if you want some color try a tinted balm, or even a lip stain. Lipstick can be much more intensive, I personally won't wear it for every day use so I'm not including it on this list.

If you have a problem getting powder blush to stay all day or want an extra glowy look, try cream instead of powder. I apply with the same brush that I use for powder blush, it gives a more even look than using your fingers.

You'll notice that I've listed a lot of stuff. Do you need all of this? NO. Absolutely not. This should be one of those things where you pick and choose what you need/want to try based upon your needs. It is very important to remember that when you wear a lot of makeup as a teen, it is much easier to cross over into the "trying much too hard" area than it is for an adult. If you have blotchy skin, use a BB Cream and concealer as needed. Maybe a bit of blush and whatever you want to do with your eyes. That's pretty good. Have great skin? Just a light moisturizer (and yes, you need it even if your skin is oily, oil is not the same as hydration), maybe a bit of blush or bronzer and some lip stain. Don't pick everything on this list!

Desert Beauty Must Haves from Raging Rouge

Today I have a great post from my friend Jen, she writes one of my favorite beauty blogs, Raging Rouge! Jen and I spend a lot of time talking about our mutual beauty obsessions, but we also share a love of shopping (especially all things Tory. She has helped me spend way too much money!) Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion ($39): I’ve been buying and rebuying this product since it was first released. It has been my go-to sunblock for vacations in the desert, and now that I’m a desert dweller I still use it regularly. It’s pricy, but this SPF50+ also wears beautifully under makeup and protects the skin from sun exposure for a long time.

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Spray SPF 50+ ($36): Since I’ve moved to the desert, I’ve added this spray sunscreen to my routine. It’s not an obnoxious mist that leaves everyone in the vicinity coughing when you use it. Shiseido uses a true pump spray that delivers broad spectrum UV protection that can reach tricky spots like the back.

Neutrogena UltraSheer Face & Body Stick Sunscreen SPF 70 ($8.79): My sons hate wearing sun block, so I was happy to discover this 70+ sunblock stick. I apply it to my boys every morning before school, and they get through a recess-filled school day (and extracurriculars) with no burns!

Active Ingredients: Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 15%, Octisalate 5%, Octocrylene 10%, Oxybenzone 3%








Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30 ($30): You never know when an afternoon in the sun might present itself. This product makes sunblock application OVER makeup a breeze, without compromising your look. It’s available in many formulas, including one with a bronze tint.

Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 13%, Zinc Oxide 14%





Sun Bum Sunscreen Lip Balm ($4): The delicious tropical flavors offered by Sun Bum help remind you to re-apply a lip balm with SPF throughout the day! The latest flavor I’ve tried is banana, which smells just like a smoothie to me and soothes dry lips in the hot summer sun.

Klorane Mango Butter Intense Nutrition Repair Masque ($23): When I first moved to Scottsdale, it didn’t take long for my hair to turn to a horrible straw-like texture. Truthfully, it looked more like a stack of yellow hay than hair. I’ve been using Klorane Mango Shampoo and Conditioner for years, so for extra moisture I added on the Repair Masque. It was just what my dry tresses needed to get back to a normal state.


Bumble and Bumble Mending Complex ($35): After washing and drying my sun-damaged hair, I applied this leave in conditioner daily. I also passed on heat styling as often as possible (trust me when I say this step is easy to skip when it’s 110 degrees or higher). Bumble and Bumble Mending Complex made my hair feel softer the very first time I used it, and improved the health of my hair more and more with each use. I was heartbroken when I ran out, but a bottle will last for a long time!


Clinique Sun Face Cream ($21.50): In my quest to find superior Broad Spectrum sun protection, I found Clinique Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Face Cream. This formula doubles as a luxurious anti-aging face cream, while also providing an SPF 50. It’s been a great choice for my sensitive skin, and is actually a reasonable price!

True Blue Spa Paraffin Super Softening Hand Lotion ($12): I first discovered this product when I forgot to pack moisturizing gloves on a vacation. NARS Pure Sheer Lip Treatment ($25): Sunblock, color, and an emollient feel make this lip treatment a permanent fixture in my bag during the summer months!


Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover ($10.50): If you’re wearing waterproof eye makeup daily, a top notch waterproof eye makeup remover is a must. Luckily this Sephora brand remover is a reasonable price, and cuts through even the best waterproof formulas without irritating the delicate eye area.
