Red and Pink lipstick application tipsRed and Pink lipstick application tips

This spring, more than ever before, my look is all about my lips. I'm wearing red and bright pink lip sticks and glosses more than ever before! It's a look that I've avoided in the past, opting for more subtle colors. I have thin lips, and calling too much attention to them hasn't been comfortable for me.

But, I've discovered that rocking a statement lip color really is dependent upon how you prepare your lips and then apply the lippie. Read on for some of my best tips!

Your Perfect Nude Lippie: Urban Decay Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss Review and Swatch Pictures

Urban Decay Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss Review and Swatch pictures

I know that I'm not the only one that has a bit of a problem finding great nude lippies that look right with my skin tone. And nude lippies are everywhere this season. I'm also not a lipstick girl at heart. I keep trying, but I will reach for a gloss or tinted balm 9 times out of 10 when given the option. So, a whole new line up of nude-ish lip glosses? From one of my favorite brands? Sign me up!

This gloss formulation is pretty great. I don't think that it is sticky at all, and I don't really notice a smell or taste to it at all. (Note, there are reviews on the UD website saying it has a strong chemical taste and scent. I don't have that at all, and I'm usually sensitive to those issues, I almost wonder if there was a bad batch?) The colors vary in their amount of pigmentation, but they all allow your lips to show through. I think they're very hydrating, more so than many of my lip balms. Which is great since we can't seem to shake the last bit of winter around my area!

Urban Decay Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss Swatches

There are 9 colors. I have to admit that while you can see a difference on my arm for the left 5 glosses (through Freestyle), on the lip I can't really tell those 5 apart. The differences are very subtle (FYI, if you right click on that pic above you should be able to open it in a new window, it is 2x that size to help you see the little shimmer and such). There's more difference for the other 4 on the right, especially Streak and Lovechild.

• Walk of Shame: Pale nude-pink with subtle micro-shimmer
• Nooner: Light neutral nude
• Rule34: Medium brown nude
• Naked: Nude-pink with pearly pink shift
• Freestyle: Brown nude with subtle mirco-shimmer
• Liar: Soft pink-mauve
• Beso: Deep pink-mauve
• Streak: Coral-peach
• Lovechild: Medium pink

I've been using mostly Nooner and Naked, but have Beso in my pocket as I type this post. What's your favorite nude lippie this season?

Carrying In My Pocket: Burt's Bees Tinted Lippies

Product Sent for Review Sponsored Post

review and swatches Burt's Bees tinted lip balm, gloss, shimmer and shine

Have you noticed that I have a thing for tinted lip balms? I love having something in my pocket that I can just slick on without a thought. I don't want to hunt down a mirror for perfect application, but I still want some color! I can't be the only one that looks too pale when her lips are completely bare, right?

A few months ago I picked up a Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm at the grocery store. They were there on an end cap (and strangely enough, that end cap was right next to the ice cream. It was a sign.) so I grabbed one. I hadn't used their tinted products in years, it was time to use them again right?

What happened next was somewhat predictable. I grabbed another one a few weeks later. And another a few weeks after that. I probably own 4 now, though since they live in my jeans pockets (and often, the pocket of my white coat at work), I usually have no idea where they are. They stay in pockets or get pulled out and put down places "where I'll find them later", like the kitchen counter and my nightstand. Finding a tinted lip balm to use that day is kind of amazing, a sign that it's going to be a good day.

When I was asked if I wanted to post about Burt's Bees, I have to admit, my only thought was... more. tinted. lip balm. yessss..... They sent me 4 products to try out (though I've bought all 4 formulas multiple times on my own in the past), and it was hard to fight the urge to start using these every day too. I had to force myself to take these pictures before I used them, all 4 tubes are now in various pockets (I'm wearing Sweet Violet as I write this post).

Burt's Bees Tinted Lippies Swatches

So, there are 4 different Burt's Bees formulations, and you can see from these swatches that all four formulations are translucent and offer varying levels of pigment. The Burt's Bees website describes different flavors on occasion, but I don't taste or smell anything from them. I love to layer the tinted balms under all of the others, just whichever ones I happen to be able to locate.

Lip Shimmer: There are 14 shades of lip shimmer, while Peony is in the mid-tone range of these shades, on the lip it is barely tinted and has some very pretty shimmer.

Lip Gloss: In my experience the glosses offer great non-sticky shine and are usually the most pigmented of the lippies. They come in 12 different shades, all 12 have a bit of shimmer.

Lip Shine: More shine, a bit less pigmented than the glosses, the 6 shades aren't shimmery.

Tinted Lip Balm: These ones are my favorite. There are 9 shades, and I swear I will collect them all (I'm hopeful that having so many means I'll always have one when I want it). There's just a hint of color, but it is enough to show up on my lips. It's nicely hydrating and has been my go-to lip balm this winter.

What's your go-to lippie right now?

L'Oreal NYC Nude Lipglosses: A Nude for Everyone!

L'Oreal NYC Nude Lipglosses
Sooo.... see these here L'Oreal lip glosses? I've been secretly using them for over a month and forgetting to share them with you. I'm pretty sure they were limited edition, and might be a tad hard to find now. Ooops! Well, actually, I saw them at my Target the other day still. But, they were getting a bit picked over.

And you're going to want some of them.
This fall, more than ever before, there's been an emphasis on the nude lip and nail. A lot of companies, especially those in the mass market price point, just come out with 1 shade of nude. Which doesn't work for anyone, because it generally has way too much pink in it, and I'm not even going to get into it not being light or dark enough.

So, L'Oreal has come to the rescue! They have a great collection of nude glosses (and polishes too, I have to break those out still), and there is a big array of shades. With my super pale coloring, I actually look best in #143, Girl's Night Out. The 2 lighter shades just make me look a bit too washed out.

The gloss has just enough pigment to make itself known on your lips. The shine is fantastic. There's no stickiness in sight. No flavor. Oh, and it lasts for about 4 hours or so, depending on frequency of coffee sipping.

Have you been wearing nude lippies? What shades are you gravitating towards?

Anastasia Kisses on my Lips Set: Gloss or Stain... Or... What?

Anastasia Kisses on my Lips Set
So, I have to admit that I've had the Anastasia Kisses on my Lips set for a few weeks, and I haven't fully decided exactly what it is. Really. It is a gloss set? But...some of them are "hypercolor" which means that they also stain your lips a bit, though since the reaction is based on your own lips, the color will be different for each person. I've elected to show just swatches here, but you'll see these colors popping up quite a bit in upcoming looks since I just... can't... stop using them!

Can you see why I can't stop using them? So pretty! These glosses aren't sticky, their colors are neutral and pretty. They work with pretty much everything. The applicator is a rubbery plastic spatula, which I usually don't like, but these glosses seem a little bit thicker to me than others, so this applicator works much better than a brush or sponge would.

The only thing is that I do wish they lasted a bit longer. On me they're good for about 2-3 hours (though obviously the staining, which is generally a bit darker than my natural lip color, lasts for a bit longer. More like 4-5 hours). I keep grabbing these out of my lippie drawer over and over!

A Month of Red Lips: BH Cosmetics Classy Gal Lipgloss

BH Cosmetics Classy Gal Lipgloss Swatch
Classy Gal is a mostly red lipgloss with just a *touch* of pink in it. The gloss is well pigmented and can almost be used as a stain, though I did find it to be slightly sticky. I loved that it had just a touch of shimmer in it as well.

I decided to pucker up in this picture a'la my friend, Pink Sith. Honestly, I know I have skinny lips, and sometimes lippies look funny on me, but whenever I see her puckering up I really want to master the perfect pucker for my pictures. I finally got one right!

A Month of Red Lips: Stila Beso

Stila Beso
So, a few days ago I shared my favorite red lip gloss, and I have to admit that it was really hard to pass up featuring Beso instead. To me, this is a more "grown up" version of the L'Oreal gloss. If you need a more grown up version of something that is already a red lippie.

This is a slightly darker true red. The formula is interesting since it is billed as a "liquid lipstick" and it really is an accurate description. It's not a gloss, it's a bit thicker and drier. Yes, like someone stuck a lipstick in a blender and added just enough liquid to make it easy to spread around. So, it is really pigmented, not at all sticky and there's no flavor to it. It applies in basically 1 swipe, perfectly lined, fully pigmented, and no touchups needed. I kid you not. It lasts about 6 hours on me, and yes, it does stain my lips a bit, so when it starts to wear off that is a bit less noticeable.

I've been reaching for this a lot lately. I think it's my red of choice as fall rolls into the midwest.

A Month of Red Lips: Essence Kiss Kiss Kiss

This is kind of an interesting gloss. First, it looks very red in the tube, but comes out as a very pretty pink on the lips. I found it to be very wearable, though make sure you get an even coating, it can look a little uneven otherwise. It isn't sticky and feels pretty hydrating, which I liked a lot.

I wasn't in love with the applicator. The shape was hard for me to work with, I really like to use the side a lot when applying gloss and I just couldn't get the hang of this one. I think I probably needed to go further down the side to take advantage of the shape a bit more.

This gloss does last for a good 4-6 hours, which I found pretty impressive!

A Month of Red Lippies: Butter London Come to Bed Red Lip Gloss

Butter London Come to Bed Red Lip Gloss swatch
When Butter London released their Lippies, I kind of liked them, though I do think they're a little thicker and some of the colors are a little stickier than others.

Come to Bed Red is very, very pigmented. It applies very easily and quickly, and is a little stickier than a MAC Lipglass, for example, but it really isn't that sticky for such a pigmented gloss. It lasts for a few hours easily despite a drink, talking or eating. Definitely worth checking out!

If you're afraid of red lippies, this is the perfect way to slowly introduce yourself! This gloss isn't sticky, has an amazing minty taste and I love the faint red color.

Makeup Wars: Battle of the Red Lip

Loreal Red Fatale swatch
For this week's Makeup Wars post we're taking a look at one of beauty's classics: the red lip. It is always a big trend in the fall, and I have to admit that this year I really love the red lip!

This gloss is the one I recommend to anyone wanting to try a red lip, it's the one I wear frequently and if you saw my Google Plus Beauty Hangout with The Blush and My Beauty Bunny on Friday, it is the lippie I was wearing that day. (In case you missed it, you can watch the beauty hangout over on YouTube. Also, I pop in and out a few times... my ISP was a bit spotty and Safari kept reloading? So annoying! Next time I'm just going to use Firefox.)

This gloss is very pigmented and I actually use it as a stain a lot! I apply it once, let it sit for about 5 minutes, and then wipe it off. I then reapply a second time, and that's the gloss I'll wear. Applying the first layer and wiping off really does a great job of staining my lips, and makes it a lot less obvious when the lipgloss is wearing off.

The gloss is a little thicker than most glosses, really more of a lacquer. I don't think that it's sticky, and it doesn't really have any flavor. Even with drinking, it lasts for a good 4-5 hours. It's not quite a true red, I think it has a very tiny amount of blue in it, which makes it a little easier to wear. For some reason the fact that it is a gloss makes it look much more polished on me than a lipstick.

I've been loving red lips so much that starting today I'll be featuring an entire month of red lippies! Now I'm off to start snapping lippie pics...In the meantime, check out the favorite red lippies of my blogging friends!

MAC Heavenly Creature Lippies

MAC Heavenly Creature Lippies Swatches and Review

The lippies seem particularly wearable and just... pretty in the Heavenly Creature collection.

Venus: Sheer yellow pink with pearl
Pleasure Seeker: Creamy Peach
Galaxy Rose: Midtone violet pink
Strictly Plutonic: Midtone pink-brown

I had a really hard time not just immediately throwing these into my purse to tote around and wear everywhere. I knew I'd lose them if I did it before I took pictures! I can't wait to start wearing them.

MAC Hey Sailor Suntints: Swatches and Review

Every year MAC puts out a few Suntints colors, and I'm usually a bit mixed on them. They're often just barely tinted (which means they're great to keep in your pocket and apply while on the run), but I don't like the flavor (this year I taste nothing except a bit of sunscreen) and the sun protection isn't broad spectrum. So, I don't think this would be a good choice for the beach! But, perfectly acceptable for tooling around town running errands.
