Quick Look: Wednesday at Home

My daughter is starting to give up her morning naps. **sniffle, sniffle** True, at 18 months she's been working on this a while, but we've hit the point where 1 nap days are starting to number 2 nap days. Which also means that getting dressed in the morning is about to become a whole lot harder!

Today we got a morning nap (yeah!), so I took a few extra minutes to play around with some of my BFTE eye shadows. I wanted something pretty and neutral, but a little bit more special than just a quick wash of 1 color.

What I Used
1. L'Oreal Youth Code BB Cream: I'm just starting to use this BB cream, which I'm liking quite a bit so far. It isn't as much coverage as my Dr. Jart BB Creams, but it is more than most tinted moisturizers. The color is a great match for me as well.

2. Tweezerman Eye Lash Curler: I'm a bit of a late convert to the expensive eye lash curler thing (for years I didn't get it and just replaced my cheap ones from the drug store), but this thing is amazing. The curve is a bit different so it actually fits my eye (shocker, I know), and the harder rubber bumper on it means that rather than a bend I get a pretty curl.

3. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Blonde: I really love the very lightly pigmented powders that you can get from MAC, Bobbi Brown and Milani. I put a very light layer on my t-zone, temples and under my cheeks (basically, where a less pale person would put bronzer) and it makes me look much more awake and healthy! I use so little that you can't even see the color, but it definitely makes a difference.

4. CoverGirl Perfection Point Plus liner in black: I like that this liner is so fine and just needs to be twisted up for use. It smudges nicely right after application but seems to stay put very nicely afterwards.

5. L'Oreal MagicLumi Concealer: I just bought this and today I took off the wrapper. It appears to be the L'Oreal version of everyone YSL Eclat Touche Concealer. It's a light to medium coverage for a concealer and has a little bit of a peachy-pink tint to help cancel out under eye circles. I believe it has some light diffusion as well. It seemed to work pretty well, though it wasn't enough coverage for my visible vessel under my right eye (not a shocker, this is always a struggle for me). I'm now at hour 12 and it is still going strong. Hopefully this is a winner!

6. MAC Cremesheen Gloss in Double Happiness: I pulled this out of a MAC shipment last night, and it was here on my counter begging to be used! This is a very pretty neutral shade that just amped up my natural lip color a tad. Very easy for anyone to wear.

7. L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara, Power Collagen in black: I confess that I'm not 100% sure about the name of this mascara, because my tube says something different than the tube on the L'Oreal site. It's part of the Voluminous line and was recently released (I bought mine about 6 weeks ago). I've found that it adds great volume and length that lasts all day, though I do sometimes need to do a little lash combing because of a few clumps.

8. Too Faced Shadow Insurance: I have a lot of different shadow primers, but at the suggestion of Phyrra, I use this one now under any loose shadows. It really, really outperforms some of my other choices (MUFE, Urban Decay and NYX), simply because it is very slightly tacky feeling, so it grabs onto the shadow to keep it on the lid.

9. BFtE Shadowin Dusty Rose:

10. MAC Pigment in Jigs & Jive: I got this in a MAC holiday set I don't even know how many years ago. I've never used it before, but I could never bear to give it away, it's so pretty! It worked well, though I confess I actually like the loose powders from BFtE and Fyrinnae more.

11. BFtE Shadow in Beautiful

12. BFtE Shadow in Sweet Nothings

13. L'Oreal Infallible Lacquer Liner in blackest black: I really like the gel/potted eye liners, but this is the first from a mass market brand that I've loved. It's every bit as good as the MAC and Bobbi Brown versions. Really.

So, the first steps of this look are a bit obvious. BB Cream to the face, concealer as needed. I used the Mineralfinish all over but also as a blush. I then prepped my lids with a very light layer of the Shadow Insurance and gave it a minute or two to set up. I then applied my shadows (look! I made you a chart to make up for not taking pics of each step), and my liners. I used the CoverGirl pencil along my lower lash line and the L'Oreal Lacquer Liner along the upper lash line, slightly thicker at the outer edge. Finally I curled my lashes, applied my mascara and swiped on some gloss!

I think my final look was pretty (and probably a bit more complicated than it needed to be), but I was happy with it. What do you think?

A Quickie Light Eye Look: Lightening Up!

quick everyday makeup

In the past, I was the boring eye shadow girl. I liked light, and light only. You couldn't really tell the difference between all of my shadows, though they were different to me. I often only used 1 or 2 shades, and almost always with just a little smudge of liner.

Over the past few years I've been trying to step up my game a little bit, but in large part that's meant adding more depth to my eye shadow. To the point where I'm wearing a smoky eye or dark-ish eye every day.

I decided it was time to mix it up and do something similar to the "old" me, a light eye and darker liner. I also mixed it up with a bright, summery lippie.

Read on to see what I used.

Perfect Wedding Hair: How to Create it at Home

The little birdie that is Nicholas Penna, Jr., (the Owner and Lead Stylist of SalonCapri in Newton and Dedham, MA) sent me an amazing email yesterday! I had to share these styles. They're perfect for a wedding, whether you're the bride, a bridesmaid or just a guest. Which one is your favorite?

• Evenly distribute your favorite volumizing mousse (Nick’s is Shu Uemura’s Ample Angora Volumizing Mousse) throughout damp locks.

• Blow-dry hair with a large, round, boar bristle brush for a voluminous finish.

• Using a 1.5-2” curling iron, curl the ends of your hair. Take two inch sections and keeping the iron vertical, wrap the sections around the wand in an upwards spiral until you reach just above your ears.
TIP: keep the iron on medium heat.

• Add a spritz of heat activated hair spray and hold the iron in place for about 20 seconds.

• Using a wide-tooth comb (or your fingers!), gently brush out the ends of your hair; this will get rid of the stickiness that hairspray can cause and also loosens up the curls.

• Next, part your hair down the middle.

• Take a two or three inch strand from both sides of your head, near the temple, twist lightly and pull behind your head.

• When the twists meet at the back of your head, begin to weave them around one another so as to create a “crown,” making sure each twist reaches its opposite side.

• Secure with bobby pins beneath the opposite twist’s origin.

• Finish the look with Shu Uemura’s Sheer Lacquer spray.

• Apply a shape paste or gel to towel-dried hair. Nick recommends L’Oreal Professionnel Artec Texturline Texture Paste to keep the twist in place and stop pieces from falling out as you begin to create the style.

• Blow-dry hair with a large, round, boar bristle brush for a voluminous finish.

• Part your hair in the middle. Take the layers at the crown and top of your head and tease them by combing against the grain with a fine tooth comb. Add hairspray for more lift and volume (try L’Oreal Professionnel Texture Expert Infinium Spray).

• On either side of the part, grab about three inches of your hair and begin twisting it back, one side at a time.

• As you twist your hair, mimic the technique you would use for a French braid and grab pieces of hair as you continue to twist. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be perfect, the look you’re going for is loose and whimsical.

• Once your twists meet at the nape of your neck, tie the ends in a knot and spritz with hairspray.

• Take the loose ends and twist them so as to create a messy bun, tucking the remaining ends underneath the heap and into the side twists.

• Secure with bobby pins and more hairspray.

• Evenly distribute your favorite volumizing mousse (Nick’s is Shu Uemura’s Ample Angora Volumizing Mousse) throughout damp locks.

• Blow-dry hair with a large, round, boar bristle brush for a voluminous finish.

• Begin a French braid on either side of the natural part, just above your ears.

• Begin with small portions of hair, and as the braid begins to form, start incorporating generous sections from beneath the braid.

• Pin both braids at the back of your head, making sure to tuck one into the other so it appears a continuous crown around your head.

• Gently pull out a few wisps of hair around your face to soften the look.

• Finish with Shu Uemura Sheer Lacquer.

What Does It Take to Be a Maxim Cover Girl? A Peek At Kelly Kelly's Makeup!

Kelly Kelly on the Maxim Cover, how to get her look
I will fully admit that while I've never actually read (or even opened) an issue of Maxim, I've long been fascinated by their covers. The girls look ah-maz-ing. Yes, they are super sex kittened up, but when a girl is featured on the cover they go all out. This month's Maxim cover girl is Kelly Kelly, from the WWE. She got the full Maxim girl treatment, though her look is surprisingly more natural than a lot of pics I found of her on-line. I got the scoop on her look from Cara Maccianti, the makeup artist that worked with Kelly that day.

Read on to find out what Cara was going for and what products she used!

Liv Tyler at the 2011 New York City Ballet Fall Gala

Liv Tyler at the 2011 New York City Ballet Fall Gala
Matin Maulawizada, Global Artistry Director and Brand Ambassador for Laura Mercier created an amazing look for Liv Tyler at the 2011 New York City Ballet Fall Gala and I had to share!

Face
Liv's skin was prepped with Foundation Primer, and then Creme Smooth Foundation in Warm Ivory was used to even out her skin tone.

Eyes
First, Liv's eyes were enhanced with Metallic Creme Eye Colour in Rose Gold, a shimmery rose-gold. He then lined with Eye Kohl in Black Gold, a more subtle choice with her pale complexion. (In the pic it is gold, but according to the LM website this is really a black with gold pearl.)

Lips
Dollface Gel Lip Colour, sheer bright blue based pink completed the look.

Eva Mendes and Thierry Mugler

Eva Mendes recently became the new face of Angel by Thierry Mugler, and I had to share her look when I saw how amazing she looked! Celebrity Makeup Artist Genevieve Herr used Clarins and Thierry Mugler products to create the look.

Face
Prime skin with Clarins Beauty Flash Balm and Multi-Active Day Cream.
'Cooling Effect Compact Foundation' in Color #50.
'Blush & Light Powder' in Brown & White was used to contour.

Lips
To prep the lips, she applied 'Flash Lips Foundation' in Nude and blended with 'Rouge Unique Lipstick' in Heaven.

Eyes
To create the sultry dramatic eye, she lined the whole eye from inner to outer corner on both the upper and lower lash lines in black "Eye Liner Cream". To highlight the lids, she swept on "Eye Shadow & Lights Quartet" in Sublime Nature to contour the eyes with beige and golden hues. Finally, she applied "Flash on Lashes Mascara' in Black to the lashes, but the secret weapon was a final coat of 'Vinyl Gloss' on the lashes to leave them looking wet and glossy.

Quick Beauty Tips from Beauty Girl Musings

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
Beauty Girl Musings
Today's collection of tips is brought to us by my friend Monique, over at Beauty Girl Musings. I'm so honored that she had so many great tips to share with us! Monique truly is amazing. At blogger events I'm usually found near her since I like being with her so much. She's incredibly nice and funny, not to mention she somehow always looks perfect. She lives in Southern California where she blogs and lives with her family (including 2 great kids!). Did I mention that she is a licenced esthetician? And she has a new fitness blog, Fit Girl Musings?

• To give lips a pretty, rosy hue exfoliate lips with your toothbrush, then follow up with your favorite sheer lipstick or gloss. Lips will look smooth and more natural.

• To add instant volume to hair, flip head over and brush hair. You can use a hair dryer for added help or if your hair is damp.

• Rim the upper inside rim of your eyes with black eyeliner (like the waterline on lower lashline, but on top) before applying mascara. Not only will you hide the mascara marks that inevitably end up there, but lashes will look fuller and more lush. I do this every day, and it makes such a difference!

• Keep your eye cream or gel in the fridge-- it's a great treat in the morning and especially for tried, puffy eyes. Let it sink in for about 10 minutes before you apply your makeup. Puffiness be gone!

• If you want your heavier-coverage liquid foundation to be more sheer, mix it with a pea size amount of moisturizer in the palm of your hand, then apply to face and blend into your neck.

• For close set eyes, apply a light colored shimmery shadow on the inside corners of your eyes to create an illusion of wider set eyes.

Do Your Makeup with 1 Product

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
Recently, The Globe and Mail featured a great video showing a makeup artist creating a fresh, glowy look using just 1 product in about 90 seconds. Obviously I would want to do this including other products (like concealer for the new mommy under eye circles and probably mascara since going without makes me feel naked), but I loved this idea.

The product used appears to be Stila one step makeup primecolor, which I bought in December from a Stila Warehouse sale on-line for a whopping $5 I think. The color comes in what looks like a lip gloss tube (it even has an angled tip applicator), and is fairly pigmented. I like that you can easily control how much product you dispense, though I recommend initially squeezing it out on to the back of your hand to warm it up and from there applying using your fingertips. It is pretty easy to blend and once you've started blending you have about 30-60 seconds to get whatever look you want. I've used it as eye shadow and blush, but not on my lips yet. The color lasts all day and my results were definitely glow worthy as well.

Serena Van Der Woodsen's Waves, Fast and Easy!

This amazing hair styling tip was provided by Amber over at Beauty Blogging Junkie. Amber writes one of my favorite blogs and has to be one of the nicest bloggers that I know. She's also the funniest (have you seen her vocab?) and she has some pretty amazing hair too. I'm using this tip over and over from now on, how could you not want to have Blake Lively's hair if you could?

Serena Van Der Woodsen Waves, Fast Easy, Wavy Hair, Blake Lively
Lately I find that my low-maintenance hair looks BETTER than it does when I take 45 minutes styling it. The trick is to wash it at night and then let it air-dry for 20 minutes with a bit of mousse (I'm loving Motions At Home Foaming Wrap Lotion) throughout the length of my hair and Moroccan Oil on the ends. Then, I blow-dry my bangs and the sides of my hair along the hairline, in addition to a 3-inch section at the crown, for height. Then, when my hair is about 85% dry, I coil it into a bun on top of my head, like Pebbles Flintstone, and sleep on it. When I take it down in the morning, I have SERENA VAN DER WOODSEN WAVES, and the whole process only takes a few minutes to achieve. Love it.

How to Look Polished in Under 15 Minutes

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
The next installment in my New Mommy Beauty Series isn't only for the mommies! Everyone can benefit from this quick look, whether for a morning that you're running a tad behind or to quickly polish up on the weekend.

This look was created by Phyrra, who writes one of my favorite beauty blogs! Her site is a treasure trove of in depth reviews, product swatches and I'm in awe of her skill in creating complicated and amazing eye looks. I'm so honored that she offered to write a post for 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic!

Behind the Scenes with Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Fragrance

Have you seen the new Elizabeth Arden ads for the Red Door Anniversary? I love how the model looks both before and after she passes through the Red Door and I couldn't wait to find out more about her looks.

Here's a quick peek behind the scenes....

Derek Lam Spring/Summer 2011

Derek Lam Spring 2011 Beauty Look, Makeup
Derek Lam Spring 2011 Beauty Look, MakeupIf you're anything like me, you have a big collection of very pretty eye liners and eye shadows at home that you can't really wear everyday. That bright purple? The navy with silver shimmer? Can you really incorporate them into your every day life? Or, at least the part of your life where you do things like go out for dinner to CPK with your husband, maybe not the part where you are raking the leaves in your yard? Though, the navy idea would be really great for the season football tickets I now have for games in a very big, big college stadium that shall remain nameless.

Anyways, my whole point is that sometimes it can be hard to see ways to work these fun colors into our normal lives. Once you hit about 26, it seems like the approach to makeup changes. There's less color and sparkle. Why? Who wants to look like a teenie bopper or Vegas Showgirl when really you're a lawyer or stay at home mom? You want to be taken seriously. So, the makeup is less exciting and we forget how to incorporate color into our everyday lives. Unless it is taupe.

Well, Estée Lauder Creative Makeup Director Tom Pecheux is coming to our rescue with this look he created for the Derek Lam Spring/Summer 2011 runway. Yes, the color is rather bright, but think of how easily this can be adapted with any color! I'm picturing a navy, plum or even a dark gray-green. You could do this with almost any color, the point is that Tom is showing how to balance the rest of the face around the color. (Apparently the answer is a little color on the rest of the lid, perfect skin and light nude lips. I don't know about you but these pictures make me want to run to my nearest Estée counter and buy every face product Tom used. I also must have that lipstick when it comes out this spring!)

Read on to see what Tom used to create this look.

Selena Gomez at the 2010 VMA Awards

Selena Gomez, VMA makeup 2010, look
I have to be honest. I am not 100% sure who Selena Gomez is. I know she has a movie coming out (I seem to recall seeing her name in a commercial for it), and I think she's one of those girls that has a show on the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon. (Ah Ha! A quick check of her Wiki page reveals she is from the Disney Channel. And was born when I was in high school. Sigh.)

I wasn't a huge fan of her VMA dress, but I think from the neck up her VMA look was amazing! Her makeup is fresh (look at how perfect her skin is!) but doesn't age her, is appropriate for being only 18, and yet also works for the Red Carpet. Her hair is young, but not your typical "running errands" pony tail. Overall, it worked for me!

Makeup Artist Karan Mitchell for Nyx Cosmetics created her makeup, the directions are below!

For Eyes
Karan started with Nyx Concealor Jar in Fair as a base on the lid and then added a shade of ‘Highlight’ and blended from the crease up to the brow. She then applied the highly pigmented sapphire blue shade from Nyx Cosmetics Eye Shadow Trio in Aquamarine on the lids as well as slightly above the crease. Karan then blended the deep blue in the I Dream of Antigua Nyx Cosmetics 5 Color Eye Shadow Palette on the outside corners of her lids. Over that Karan lined the entire eye with Magic Kohl eye liner pencil by Givenchy. Two coats of Nyx Professional Mascara in Black finished the look.

For the Lips
The lip look was finished with Nyx Cosmetics Lipstick shade #174 nude, and Nyx Mega Shine Lipgloss in #104 Sweet Heart for that soft fresh nude lip look!

For Face
Karan created a fresh faced healthy glow for Selena by using Nyx Cosmetics Tango with Bronzer Stix #2 in Merengue Flush. This was applied to the apples of her cheeks.

Flirty and Playful for Prom

Maggie, Oscar 2010, prom, makeup, quick look
I loved Maggie Gyllenhaal's look at this year's Oscars! The bright pink lippie was a breathe of fresh air, and I think that this look is particularly well suited for prom this year. Can't you see this with a short neon dress? Perfect!

Molly Stern, Make Up Artist, Cover GirlUpdated 4/21/2010 Somehow, I got more information about this look (a little birdie emailed me actually), and I knew that I had to share it with everyone! It turns out that the look was created by Molly Stern, an amazing makeup artist that works with Cover Girl. Molly is one of my favorite makeup artists, I find her looks to be fresh and very playful, so that likely explains why I loved Maggie's look so much!

Here's what Molly had to say about Maggie's look, it's much more interesting than the list of colors I had before.
Maggie is the muse of spring. Her Dries Van Noten gown is a swirl of bright colors that fades into white. For her makeup I wanted to bring out the color of her eyes with some depth while keeping with the brightness of her overall style.

We started off the look by refreshing the skin with Jurlique Rose Water spray. Then I prepped the skin with Shu Uemura red:juvenus vitalizing concentrate and lightly moisturized with La Mer moisturizing lotion.

For a flawless complexion I primed Maggie's skin with COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Serum Primer (out in July!!).

Then I lightly applied some Chantecaille future skin foundation in the color 'cream' only where she needed it. Then lastly I dusted La Mer powder foundation in 'Ivory' to set the skin for the big night.

For her amber peachy cheeks I used COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Rich Cinnamon and dusted some NARS "dolce vita" blush on the apples.

For Maggie's eyes of layered copper smoke I based her eye with COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire. Next I deepened her lid with NARS soft touch shadow pencil "skorpios". Then I blended into the crease Shu Uemura pressed eye shadow "p brown 810" and lastly I lightly dusted Shu Uemura pressed eyeshadow in "n me brown 860" all over the lid for a golden finish. For the undereye, I resmudged the COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast under her lash line to bring out the blue of Maggie's eyes. Finally I defined her lashes by combining brown and black mascara. I painted the lashes with both colors using COVERGIRL LashBlast Length for perfectly flirty long lashes.

On Maggies lips I applied NARS "schiap" lip color –it was the perfect shade to finish off the look. Its bright hue matches Maggie's vibrant sense of style and confidence.

The finished product was perfection. She looked like herself. Authentic, cool and beautiful. Being a part of Oscar day with a nominee is such an honor. It's like an actress' wedding day with Hollywood. I love being here. I feel so blessed.

The Perfect Cat Eye (Or, How to Perfectly Line Your Eye)

cat eye
While the cat eye look is a classic, it's definitely one that can be hard to master. How thick should that line be, how far to extend it... how sharp should the angle be... so many variables! Here's an in depth video showing you how to get this look on your own at home.

This is the next installment of the easy to follow tutorials by the folks over at EcoTools!

EcoTools are available at massmarket retailers like Target and ULTA. The brushes used in this tutorial can be found at this on-line store. It's the most complete set of the brushes that I found on-line. Notice that some of the brushes (the bronzer brush in particular) are not available in the sets.

Disclosure: I once received a free set of brushes from EcoTools. You can read my EcoTools brush review to see how I liked them.

Vera Farmiga's Golden Globes Look

Prom 2010 makeup easy
Exactly who is this woman? I kept seeing her and her name pop up over and over this awards season. I had no idea who she was. Turns out, she's the blonde that George Clooney fell for in up in the air, she's just a brunette now and I couldn't recognize her. Vera Farmiga actually looks better as a brunette the more I see pictures of her, and I really loved her Golden Globes look. She's truly just so pretty, there's no other way to describe it.

Runway to Prom: Thakoon Spring-Summer 2010

Prom, 2010, Thakoon, Quick Makeup
I remember well how stressful Prom season was. Will he ask you or not? Where did you buy the dress? Who even has time to think about hair and makeup?

Well, I thought I'd take a few laps through my giant backlogs of email (It's rather impressive how many thousands of emails I have managed to fully ignore in my inbox) and pull up a few looks that might help everyone out! For the next month or so I'll be showcasing a different look a day about 3-4 times week. It might be hair, it might be makeup. It might be from a runway show or a Hollywood event. Somewhere a pro took time to send me a pic and instructions on how to achieve the look at home. While I'm doing this for the girls preparing for prom, these looks would work just as well for another event, like a wedding. There will even be a few contests included in these posts, so be prepared!

As always, remember that these looks are a "jumping off point" meaning you can use them as inspiration to recreate the look on your own, use elements of the look (maybe you really love the cheek but not the eye) and that even the colors are just suggestions. If they used a rose colored blush but you already have one from a different brand or in a slightly different shade don't feel you need to rush out and buy the recommended one.

Hair Worthy of Prime Time: Quick Tips to Get it Yourself!

Hair Worthy of Prime Time: Quick Tips to Get it Yourself!
I get a lot of e-mails with info on how to achieve a certain look around award show season. I tend to pick the cream of the crop for posting, though I honestly feel a bit strange about that. Sure Heidi Klum looked gorgeous in her dress, or Angelina's cat eye was amazing. But frequently those looks aren't really workable for "everyday." And I want more everyday looks.

So, I was pretty excited when I received information from Aussie about how to achieve the looks we see on our favorite prime time shows. These looks are workable for every day, aren't very detailed and just should help you with your own look.

Read on for more!
