Continuing with my current hand cream obsession, here's a quick little review of Barielle's Intensive Hand Treatment Cream. Barielle can be a bit hard to find in stores. I've found it at places like ULTA, beauty supplies and it's nearly always at TJ Maxx (though with a not-so-stellar selection, grab what you want when you see it!). As well, you can order on-line.
This product is not your everyday hand cream. This is what to reach for when you really need moisture. Like now. STAT. This thick cream smells exactly like Nivea, Apply a coat and let it sink in. Barielle mentions enclosed cotton gloves in the directions, though I've never had them in the box when I've purchased this. I think people must steal them at TJ Maxx. In any case, they recommend putting on cotton gloves and then going to sleep. Just applying it alone I have had a dramatic increase in overall skin hydration, very similar to a paraffin hand treatment. This does leave a greasy film afterwards, so I recommend taking that into consideration before use.

I'm really glad you are doing all these hand cream reviews right now. My hands are so chapped in the winter and I'm constantly looking for a better treatment. Even when something does produce amazing results, (which is usually overnight and in gloves) my hands chap again as soon as they get wet. Nivea and honey recipe for hands are my 2 best ones right now. Have you tried the co bigelow chapped hands remedy? I hear that one is really good too.

ReplyDeletei love this new series. I live in the mountains, so it's super cold, dry, and I wash my hands a lot. So, I'm looking forward to seeing what works. I've been using ShiKai's borage hand cream, which is supposed to help "heal" cracked hands and so far I've been really impressed. You can find it a whole foods and such places.

ReplyDeleteThanks for that article about such an important topic this time of year. People I know swear by EmmGerri Hand and Body Lotion (available at www.emmgerri.com), saying that it is the only thing that works on their skin especially in the winter. There is nothing worse than dry, itchy skin.

I wanted to put my two cents in about the Barielle intensive hand cream. I managed to find a jar and can't remember where (I think CVS sometimes has it also). I thought it would be the end to my winter bouts of dry, chapping and flaking hands. I had my own gloves. It helped a little, but not too much.
I also tried this winter a pricey hand cream offered at Brookstone. It's being touted as a miracle breakthrough. It was supposed to stay all day, regardless of getting your hands wet. This one goes on thick, leaves hands a little greasy, and moisturizes. It just didn't seem to dig down into the layers that needed the most help.
Last week or so, I was cruising around the makeup counters at Saks, and mentioned my quest for a good hand and foot cream. One of my footsies has been so dry, it's been peeling. I have a whole cache of moisturizing creams, and my stockpile does include cotton socks, but nothing to date has worked!
In any case, I just lucked out and a smart salesgal presented me with Kiehl's Intensive Treatment and Moisturizer for Dry and Callused Areas. With a shrug, I took it home. She swore by it for her feet.
Believe it! The chapping on my hands has already cleared up!!! Even my cuticles seem happier. I don't need to wear gloves overnight and it's not too messy. One foot is already happier.
I was wondering what to do once the winter dryness set in. As I said, I've already tried about ten different creams without success. I thought I may have even tried a different Kiehl's cream, but didn't have too much success.
It's certainly easier to find at local department stores. A tube is about $20-25. A large jar is about $47. Don't quote me on exact prices.
Barielle started out as a treatment for horses's hooves. I remember when the line first came out in the 80s and the excitement surrounding it. I don't know if they've since changed or refined the formula or what.
