The Wavy Long Bob: How to Do It
The ongoing saga of my hair continues! Regular readers may know that I recently unexpectedly chopped my hair, and while I do love my new cut, I need a bit more variety. There are only so many ways that you can wear a long bob!

Luckily, I didn't have to look very far for other options, I'd already been hoarding these pictures in my Pinterest Hair Inspiration Board. Adding some texture and a bit of wave seemed like a logical thing to try out!

how to create a long wavy bob

To create the look, I used products from Vidal Sassoon's Pro Series. First, I wanted to control any frizz (there was a lot of humidity the day I did this hair style), so I washed my hair using their Extreme Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner. To prep my hair for the style I put a small amount (about the size of a nickel) of the Smooth Combing Creme in my wet hair and combed it through with a wide tooth comb. I then used about the size of a large egg of the Extra Firm Hold Mousse. I put this throughout my hair to add volume and help hold on to the style.

how to add waves to your long bob
I start with freshly dried hair. I didn't waste time perfectly blowing it out since I'd be curling it anyways.

Next I sectioned off my hair. I decided that I would add some waves to the under sections of my hair rather than leaving them straight, though I do think you could just do a few waves on the top section if you are in a rush. I typically do 3 layers of hair, this will vary depending on how much hair you have.

styling a long bob with some waves

I experimented with curling wands and curling irons of various sizes, and finally decided that with this length of hair it is easiest to curl with a flat iron. Mine has a 1" plate and the edges curl slightly, which makes the results a bit more like a "curl" and eliminates ridges.

To start curling I used smaller sections of hair, usually about 1 inch wide. I started the iron almost at the root and then turned it a full 180 degrees. As I slowly pulled the iron through my hair I turned it a second 180 degrees (now I had a 360 turn in my hair) and kept pulling it out.

When I got to the end of my hair, I pulled out the iron and there would be a kind of haphazard curl in it, which is exactly what I wanted! I twisted the curl slightly to elongate the curl, and let the hair cool down in that shape. I continued this process around my entire head. Near my face I made sure to turn the iron away from my face, but otherwise I varied the amount of hair that I was curling and the direction it was curled.

Once I was done curling my hair all over I pulled back a little in the front and secured it with bobby pins. I set it using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hair Spray, which I love because my hair moves around a bit but the curls stayed put!

I don't have the exact same waves as the girls in my Pinterest inspiration, but so far I'm pretty happy! Have you curled your long bob? What are your tips?

  1. Love this tutorial Christine! I stink at curling my hair. I have a similar cut as yours and I adore it. It's the perfect length for my thick hair. I haven't tried any of the VS products. Does the mousse work without feeling gross and crunchy. I am always looking for products to give my heavy hair body. :)

  2. The Mousse is good! I seem to have this issue where I think I still have my super long hair and will get the amount of mousse that I need for that hair... and apply it to my hair that is 12 inches shorter. Oops! Then it is a bit scrunchy. But, with 1/3 that amount (the amount of an egg, like a normal person) then it just adds volume and hold.

  3. Ahhh I'm the worst trying to curl with a straightener. I have a shorter angled bob and I think I've mastered the waves but with a wand. I must say I love your curls though, I need to practice with my straightener :)

  4. I love this! I recently had my waist length hair cut in to a long bob (longer at the front) and am struggling to find new styles. (Having pangs for the innumerable plaits and up-dos I used to be able to do!) I have never really used mousse in my hair, it doesn't sit too heavily does it? Would you say Vidal Sassoon is the best brand to try? My hair is fine but there is a lot of it so it gets super knotty, but also any heat applied styles tend to drop out (it is between curly and straight but not in a good way haha.) Thank you for the styling tips, I will definitely be trying this.

  5. This particular post was sponsored by VS, but I do think it's one of my favorite mousses for my hair! It can take some experimentation to find the best mousse (and the right amount) for your hair. This is definitely on of my go-to products for when my hair is this length!
