My Current Nightly Skincare Routine

the best night time skin care routine

In the past, I would change my entire skincare routine every 6-8 weeks as I was testing different products. Now that I'm older, and I have rosacea, my skin just can't tolerate that. I have a group of core products that I use every night, swapping testing products in and out as needed. I test products for at least 8 weeks, sometimes longer now.

So, here are some of my go-to products, listed in the order I use them!

Clean

Eye Makeup Remover
I change this up the most of any of the products that I use. I don't have a go-to product that I use all of the time, but I'm currently using Philosophy Release Me (get it at ULTA, Sephora or Nordstrom) and am planning to repurchase, which is the first time I've bought an eye makeup remover a second time in... years?

Other Picks I Like:
• Garnier Clean+ Nourishing Cleansing Oil (buy it from Amazon, ULTA or Target)
• Simple Cleansing Micellar Water (from ULTA or Target)

Gentle Cleanser
My current pick is the Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash (get it from ULTA, Bliss). For years I would get mini-bottles from Sephora before trips, or on occasion it would even be the hotel product! I hoarded those little bottles... finally I just started using it last summer. It gets everything off, rinses quickly and doesn't overwash my skin. However, I think it has microbeads. Which I'm not too happy about (though I am happy that they'll likely need to take them out of the formula!), I've just been using up the bottles that I stocked up on during last year's Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. Which will probably last me another year. I might have bought too much!

Other Picks I Like:
• Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser (at Kiehl's or Nordstrom)
• Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser (from ULTA or Target)

Treat

Medication
If you have anything prescribed by a physician for your face, that should go next. I'm just mentioning it since I said I was going in order! I use a topical antibiotic for my rosacea.

Eye Cream
I have four eye creams that I rotate through, currently Rodan + Fields Redefine Multi-Function Eye Cream (from R+F) is in my medicine cabinet, but I pretty much use any of these interchangeably. Note, the RoC has retinol, so I only use that one at night, and typically it is an every other night product for me.

Other Picks I Like:
• RoC Skincare Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream (get it at Target or ULTA)
• iS Clinical Youth Eye Complex (from DermStore)
• Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado (at Kiehl's or Nordstrom)

Serums/Targeted Treatments
Next, it's time for your serums and other treatment products! I apply these in order of how heavy they are, and yes, I often apply multiple treatments. I use treatments for anti-aging, a light lotion to help soothe my rosacea (which is amazing if you have rosacea, love it!) and a spot treatment if I have any blemishes. I also have a favorite facial oil that I'll add in a few drops if my skin is needing a little extra moisture. It is amazing for travel. Being on a plane seems to suck all of the moisture out of my skin, so I always bring Midnight Recovery with me.

Anti-Aging
• Dermalogica Age Smart Multivitamin Power Serum (at ULTA)
• Perricone MD Vitamin C Ester 15 (at Perricone or ULTA)

Rosacea Soothing
• Rodan + Fields Soothe Sensitive Skin Treatment (from R+F)

Extra Moisture
• Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate (get it from Kiehl's or Nordstrom)

Nightly Moisturizer

Once I've applied all of my nightly treatments, I like to apply an all over moisturizer that has some anti-aging benefits. Right now that's the Kiehl's Super Multi-Corrective Cream (from Kiehl's or Nordstrom)

Lash Serum

I'm obsessed with my lashes, and without my Revitalash (I buy it from Nordstrom) they are wimpy, short and stubby things. The money I spend on that lash serum is well worth it! I haven't tried any others, I'm worried they won't work as well. I wait until the summer Nordies Anniversary Sale and then I buy an entire year's worth at once.

Kiehl's has sent me samples of the Super Multi-Corrective Cream and Midnight Recovery Concentrate in the past, and Revitalash sent me a tube on their treatment once. However, I've since repurchased all 3 products more times than I can count!

  1. These seem like some powerful products! I could definitely use a few of these in my routine - my skin could use it.

  4. I'm using a different eye cream currently, but still have one at home to go back to. I have the Soothe in my constant rotation, I definitely notice if I skip a day!
