Fighting the Humidity with a Customized Routine from Nexxus

Fighting the Humidity with a Customized Routine from Nexxus

Have you been surviving the heat wave lately? Somehow, the end of July seems to always be the hottest, most humid week of the year. I'm convinced it is because the big Ann Arbor Art Fair was last week. I didn't go to Art Fair this year, instead I spent a decent portion of time hanging out in my pool.

Since this isn't my first summer surviving the late July humidity in Michigan, I started planning ahead for anti-frizz awhile ago. I started by looking for one of my favorite anti-frizz products, the Nexxus Oil Infinite Nourishing Hair Oil.

Fighting the Humidity with a Customized Routine from Nexxus

It turns out there's a great deal over on the Sam's Club website, where they have a bundle option for Nexxus Shampoo, Conditioner and a treatment product. There are a lot of great options for the products, so it is easy to customize for your own hair's needs.

Fighting the Humidity with a Customized Routine from Nexxus

• If your hair is damaged, try the Emergencee Damage Recovery System: Shampoo, Reconstructing Treatment, Conditioner
• To calm frizz, the Oil Infinite Frizz Defying System: Shampoo, Conditioner, Nourishing Hair Oil
• To add volume, go for the Diametress Luscious Volume System: Shampoo, Conditioner and Headress Leave-In Conditioning Creme
• To protect color treated hair, use the Color Assure Vibrancy Retension System: Pre-Wash Primer, Shampoo and Conditioner
• For fine, weak hair, Youth Renewal Radiance System: Shampoo, Conditioner and Elixir
• For split ends, the Promend Split End Bonding System will help to seal them: Shampoo, Conditioner and Binding Creme

I love mixing and matching different products to get exactly what my hair needs, and I think with such a great deal I'll likely be stocking up on shampoo and conditioner and then trying out a few different treatment products.

It turns out that you can also purchase the products in the store, though the on-line deal does save you a few dollars. As well, in the store you don't mix and match from the different collections. Since I really wanted to fight frizz, and I'm not always patient enough to wait for things to arrive after I buy them on-line, I snagged this trio when I was at Sam's Club for a recent shopping trip. I was already planning to buy all of the Oil Infinite Frizz Defying System, and it was all together in 1 box for me to take home!

The trio works really well when they're all used together. The shampoo and conditioner are lightly scented, I found that they are hydrating but don't overdo it and weigh my hair down at all. I then apply the Nourishing Hair Oil to my hair when it is still damp (2 pumps that I distribute from the roots to the tips) and then once I've blown it dry I add about 1/2 pump to the ends of my hair. I haven't had to flat iron my hair, and despite the very high humidity, I've been completely frizz free!

The Best Frizz Fighting Hair Products for Summer

The Best Frizz Fighting Hair Products for Summer

Today for Makeup Wars, we're tackling one of summer's biggest hair woes, frizz! No one wants to have super frizzy hair. It's something that some of us are more prone to than others, and I'm in the frizzy hair camp.

When my hair is frizzy, there are a few things that I do to de-frizz. The most important for me is hydrating my hair. My hair is always dry when it starts to frizz, regardless of how much humidity is out there. So, if you're fighting the frizz, be sure to use an intensive hydrating treatment!

The Best Frizz Fighting Hair Products for Summer

Hydrate

When my hair is dry and damaged, I definitely see an increase in frizz! I swap out my regular conditioner for a more intensive treatment, or if I really need to I'll even grab an overnight treatment. When I'm having issues with frizz, a hydrating issue is the first product I reach for!

A few of my favorite super intensive treatments:

1. Darshana (from Darshana): You can read my Darshana Hair Oil Review, but this hair oil is amazing! It is very versatile. You can use it in your hair about 30 minutes before a shower or even apply it all over at night. It really hydrates your hair without weighing it down.

2. Aussie 3 Minute Miracle (from Drugstore.com): This is a quick and easy swap out for regular conditioner. Plus, you can't beat the price!

3. Kerastase Nutrive Masque Oléo-Relax (from Kerastase): While I usually use the Chroma line from Kerastase (and I love both of those masques), I keep an "emergency" hair mask from the Nutrive line as well for when my hair is super dry and frizzy. To ensure that you get the most out of the mask, I towel dry my freshly shampooed hair first, apply the mask and put on a shower cap. I rinse it out after about 5-10 minutes. It can make anyone's hair silky soft!

Dry It Right

A few little tweaks in how you dry your hair can actually make a big difference in your level of frizz! When drying your hair, if you think your hair is dry, keep drying it for a few more minutes. Usually it isn't quite fully dry, and taking a few minutes to get rid of the last bit of moisture can really make a big difference when it comes to frizz.

4. DevaCurl DevaTowel (from Sephora): Instead of drying your hair with a regular towel, reach for microfiber (like this DevaTowel) or even just an old t-shirt. Don't rub, instead just squeeze and blot your hair. You'll rough up the cuticle of your hair less, so you'll have shinier hair with less frizz!

5. Sam Villa Professional Ionic Blow Dryer (from ULTA): This is just the dryer that I'm currently using, but the key is the ionic feature. It really does cut down on frizz! You'll find it at many price points, including the Conair Infiniti Pro Dryer (see my review, get it at ULTA) from $30, the Sephora Blast: Ceramic Ionic Blow Dryer ($80 at Sephora), all the way up to the $250 T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i Dryer (from Nordstrom).

Styling Products to Prevent Frizz

Finally, we get to the part that you really want to know. What products should you add in to your styling routine to fight frizz? There are a lot of great products out there, I'm including some of my faves here. I'm purposefully trying to hit every price point, but in reality, if there is Living Proof in the house, I will use that first. If I'm out, I reach for L'Oreal. Living Proof has ingredients you won't find elsewhere, and it just works a bit better for frizz fighting. L'Oreal works really, really well and I do like it (and its price tag) a lot. But, I'm a bigger Living Proof Fan.

While Hair Is Wet:
6. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment (my Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Styling Treatment Review, But it at Sephora): This product has anti-frizz and volumizing ingredients from Living Proof

7. L'Oreal Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Thermal Smoother Cream (at ULTA): Similar to the Living Proof, this cream is great for smoothing and preventing frizz.

While Styling Dry Hair:
8. Living Proof No Frizz Humidity Shield (at Sephora): You can spray it on over your styled hair and it keeps any and all possible humidity away. And you can't feel it in your hair. Amazing!

9. Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray (at Sephora): This is the hairspray I use all summer long. It won't budge even in mid-July Michigan humidity, spray it over styled hair and smooth everything briefly with your brush or a comb and it will keep frizz away.

10. L'Oreal Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray (at ULTA): The L'Oreal version of the Living Proof hairspray. Yes, it does work, it just isn't quite as touchable.

Great for Wet or Dry Hair:
11. L'Oreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair 5 Multi-Restorative Dry Oil (at Target): I like this on wet hair to smooth and prevent frizz, or on freshly styled hair to further finish the style.

12. Redken Diamond Oil (from ULTA): This is the most concentrated hair oil I've ever used. You only need a few drops (which means that bottle is enough for 2 lifetimes), and you need to use about half the amount on dry hair that you use on wet hair.

11 Great Anti-Frizz Hair Products via 15MinuteBeauty.com

1. Ouidad Climate Control Frizz & Flyaway Fighter Taming Shine Spray: This spray is super lightweight and holds up even under high humidity.

2. AG Hair Smooth Frizzproof Anti-Humidity Spray (at ULTA): One quick spray and your hair is smooth and shiny. It's almost impossible to over use this product.

3. AG Hair Smoothing Balm: This is a creamy balm, and a little goes a long way! It is very lightweight and you can use it on wet or dry hair.

4. Bumble and Bumble Defrizz: You only need a few drops, and you can use it at any point in styling. It also does a great job of taming fly aways!

5. Kerastase Oleo Relax Serum: Also really lightweight, it adds a ton of shine and is a hair stylist favorite.

6. L'Oreal Smooth Intense Frizz Taming Serum: This is pretty lightweight and also helps protect against heat damage. If you're at the drugstore, reach for this over the Frizz Ease.

7. Mark Hill MiracOILicious Argan Oil: This oil is great on wet hair, but use a lighter hand if you're applying it to dry hair.

8. Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine: Another great oil, this one only needs 2 or 3 drops, even for my super thick hair. A bottle is likely a lifetime supply.

9. Living Proof Prime Style Extender: When used on wet hair, this is meant to "prime" your hair for later products, it tames frizz and smooths and helps your hair style last much longer despite humidity.

10. Avon Advance Techniques Frizz Control Lotus Shield Anti-Frizz Treatment: This is the best I've found for super high humidity, just a small amount on wet hair.

11. L'Oreal EverStyle Alcohol-Free Smooth & Shine Creme: This cream also helps tame curls when you're blowing out your hair.

Fighting the Frizz! Inexpensive Frizz Fighters and a DIY Braid to Die For!

Nothing to Dislose

Ways to fight frizz

Remember last week when I had an entire series of post on how to fight frizzy hair? It turns out that I'm not alone in my hatred of frizzy hair! L'Oreal Paris analyzed Tweets and found that from January through the end of June, there were 171,892 total tweets related to hair care issues including frizz, dry hair, fragile/thinning hair, color-treated hair and general damage – and among this set, 43% of mentions (74K) were about frizz. That number rises to 47% when looking at the month of June alone!

L'Oreal asked Polly Blitzer, TV style expert, former InStyle beauty editor and founder of BeautyBlitz.com, to get her tips for tackling frizz head on and styling hair when the humidity hits:

Product Picks
“L’Oréal Paris Advanced Haircare Smooth Intense Frizz Taming Serum and Smooth Intense Xtreme Straight Crème work in tandem to keep your hair frizz-free for 72 hours. They polish the hair, lock in shine and give any hint of unruly hair behavior the heave-ho.”

Best Style to Fight Frizz: A Braid!
“Whether you like yours fishtail, Grecian or inverted on the hairline, you’re bound to be braided all summer long. These sizzling hot trends, from side-plaited to intricately woven, require your hair to be silky, glossy and healthy.”

One of my favorite braids this summer was on Maria Menounos (yet more reason to grow out my hair).
L’Oréal Paris Consulting Hair Expert Johnny Lavoy shared how to get the look!

1. Create a center part from the front of the head to the nape of the neck. Clip each section.

2. Create two cornrow braids down each side of the head. A cornrow braid is similar to a French braid except you braid underhand vs. overhand.

3. Once you get to the nape with each braid, leave the remaining hair unbraided and secure with elastics.

4. Using the remaining hair, create a fishtail braid by using two sections rather than three like a traditional braid. To create it, pick up a small section of hair from one side and pass it over to the opposite side and then repeat going back and forth. The hair should go OVER the left section and finish UNDER the right section.

5. Secure the fishtail with an elastic and finish the look with a spritz of Elnett Satin Hairspray.

Fighting the Frizz: Greg Ruggeri Shares His Favorite Products and Treatments

Nothing to Disclose

best ways to de-frizz your hair

anti-frizz hair tips
I recommend a fresh blowout with a small portion of an anti frizz product when the humidity is hight. Apart from Brazilian blowouts (the non toxic variety are okay for the short term), the use of a straightening iron with a thermal protectant is always a sure way to avoid frizz. To extend the life of this blowout, use a dry shampoo directly after the blowout.

My go-to products are evo hair's icon welder hot tool shaper (thermal protectant), liquid rollers curl balm, end doctor smoothing sealant (protects & binds the ends), water killer dry shampoo and love perpetua shine drops.

Greg Ruggeri of Salon Ruggeri is an Australian native, Ruggeri's career began when he was just 13, while working at his mother's salon as an assistant, Ruggeri quickly picked up on the trade. Using his mother as a mentor, at 15 he started an apprenticeship working for a salon in fashionable Paddington, Sydney. He quickly worked his way up the ladder, finding time to train as a make-up artist, going on to do hair & make-up regularly for Gucci, Louis Vuitton and YSL. In 2005, Ruggeri opened his own salon with interior designer partner, Craig Longhurst, in their Victorian townhouse in Sydney, Australia. The two-chair intimate salon became the salon for Australia's celebrity and elite, providing masterful work in a very exclusive and private setting. After five successful years, Ruggeri and Longhurst brought their salon stateside to New York City and opened Salon Ruggeri in August 2010. Today, Salon Ruggeri seamlessly blends the finest talent in hairstyling with rare one-on-one experience in an artful and chic setting.

work with your curl to fight frizz and humidity
When dealing with high humidity, I try to go with the hair's natural texture instead of fighting against it. Use a styling product such as René Furterer Acanthe Acanthe Perfect Curls Curl Enhancing Leave-In Fluid and a diffuser for soft waves with superior frizz control.

Fighting the Frizz: Alfredo Lewis Shares his Best Tips!

Nothing to Disclose

best ways to de-frizz your hair

Great Styling Products to Prevent Frizzy Hair
Create a style that goes with your hair type. When it's humid, hair tends to have a mind of its own. Don't fight it... embrace it! If you have straight hair, stay away from curls. If you have curly hair, choose waves or loose curls as your look for the day. Don't over-dry, and use a smoothing serum layered with a light smoothing gel to hold the style. But don't go crazy with the product....less is more.

Smoothing treatments are a great way to avoid frizz. My go-to is Brazilian Blowout. There is no down time, and it lasts for 12 weeks. I have gotten them regularly since summer arrived. My clients love them because the result is manageable, frizz-free hair for vacations and beach time.

I use these products on my clients and when I go to the salon: Brazilian Blowout Acai Daily Smoothing Serum is fantastic. Apply a quarter size to ends, and comb through. You can either air dry or apply before styling. Oribe Imperméable Anti-Humidity Spray is FANTASTIC. I am addicted to it. It's light, yet holds and leaves hair with bounce and movement. It also smells incredible.

Alfredo Lewis has been a hair color specialist for almost 20 years. He trained at both the prestigious Yamano Beauty College in Los Angeles and the Loreal Paris Color Academy in New York City. After graduating, Alfredo studied with top celebrity colorists, Negan Zand and Lori Goddard-Clark, at Cristophe Salon in Beverly Hills. There he mastered the arts of Balyage and foil highlights, creating true baby blondes and rich caramel browns as well as color correction. He has worked on celebrities such as Adriana Lima, Dave Navarro, Camryn Manheim, Sandra Bullock, Nastasia Kinski, Holly Hunter, Jaquiline Pinol, Ricki Lander, Monet Mazur and Jane Fonda. After working with celebrity stylist Corey Powell at Jonathon Salon, a Bravo Blowout Series salon, he returned to Cristophe for more than eight years as a color specialist. He currently works at the Argyle Salon and Spa, housed in the Sunset Tower Hotel, in West Hollywood.

Fighting the Frizz: Andrea Dion Jacobs Shares Her Hawaii Tested Anti-Frizz Techniques

Nothing to Disclose

best ways to de-frizz your hair

best products to fight frizz in the tropics
I get to tackle frizz every day here on Maui. I like basic old school Joico styling lotion or light weight gels with a little drop of a Kerastase Ultime Elixer serum, run through wet hair and blow dry. The trick is make sure hair is dry, if there is any moisture in the hair it will frizz as soon as it hits the humidity. I find people who shampoo too often are fighting frizz because the hair is too clean, they then need to add oils or serums to tame the dryness.

If wearing hair natural and curly and frizz free I love Shu Uemura Art of Hair Kaze Wave, run through wet hair then air dry, once dry tame with a serum or Shu Uemura Essence Absolue Oil in Cream to tame frizz and freshen up the curls.

Andrea Dion Jacobs is based at the Orchid Salon in the Four Seasons Resort and Spa on the beautiful island of Maui (find them on Facebook). Becoming a hairstylist right out high school Andrea's life long love for the industry has taken her from behind the chair as a stylist and master colorist to 10 years as the owner of a successful Downtown Boston salon. She and her husband traded the city life for the sun and sand of Maui.

Fighting the Frizz: Tips from Hair Pros to Get Smooth & Shiny Hair this Summer despite Humidity

Products Sent for Consideration I Bought it Myself

best ways to de-frizz your hair
Admit it, this is a big hair concern in the summer, especially as the hot and humid months of summer are hitting us! No one likes to have frizzy hair, but it feels like once the humidity starts spiking some of us turn into poodles. It can be hard to not look like Monica Gellar in Barbados.

I asked some of the hottest hair stylists and colorists around the country for their best frizz fighting tips and smoothing products! I'll be featuring a different pro each day, but I thought it would be fun to share my own tips and product recommendations first. I have somewhat wavy hair, it's fine, but there's enough of it on my head for 4 people! In the Michigan summers we get a lot of humidity, so I'm pretty well versed in avoiding the frizz.

best ways to avoid frizz
I've found that when the humidity isn't too bad, I can just add in or swap out a few products to keep my hair smooth. My first move is to add a frizz fighting oil or serum to my hair when it is wet and comb in through completely.

I've had great results with the Avon Lotus Shield, which is a lightweight lotion that I can't even tell is in my hair. Another option that I've been trying out for the last few days is Redken's new Diamond Oil (I'm using the intense version). This is a very hydrating oil that only needs 2-3 drops per application! I apply it to my wet hair, comb it through, and apply another 2 drops to the ends of my hair once it is dry. It really keeps away any frizz, adds great shine and doesn't make my hair greasy.

Another one of my favorite tips when fighting frizz is to keep drying your hair. While I'm definitely pressed for time in the morning, if I think my hair is dry, I don't stop. A lot of that frizz starts right after you turn off that blow dryer, simply because your hair isn't quite fully dry. So, once I think my hair is done I'll keep going for another 2 minutes or so to really get it dry. This goes a long way toward making my hair look more like a professional blow out and not like I stuck a finger in a light socket!

Finally, when the humidity is really up there, I just swap out everything for the Living Proof frizz line. They have shampoo, conditioner, styling lotion... you name it! Even an amazing hair spray! All of it stands up to humidity and keeps my hair sleek even when I'm in the tropics.

Stay tuned this week for new tips from a different hair expert every day! Let me know what your favorite frizz fighting tips are in the comments!
