The ongoing saga of my hair continues! Regular readers may know that I recently unexpectedly chopped my hair, and while I do love my new cut, I need a bit more variety. There are only so many ways that you can wear a long bob!
Luckily, I didn't have to look very far for other options, I'd already been hoarding these pictures in my Pinterest Hair Inspiration Board. Adding some texture and a bit of wave seemed like a logical thing to try out!
To create the look, I used products from Vidal Sassoon's Pro Series. First, I wanted to control any frizz (there was a lot of humidity the day I did this hair style), so I washed my hair using their Extreme Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner. To prep my hair for the style I put a small amount (about the size of a nickel) of the Smooth Combing Creme in my wet hair and combed it through with a wide tooth comb. I then used about the size of a large egg of the Extra Firm Hold Mousse. I put this throughout my hair to add volume and help hold on to the style.
I start with freshly dried hair. I didn't waste time perfectly blowing it out since I'd be curling it anyways.
Next I sectioned off my hair. I decided that I would add some waves to the under sections of my hair rather than leaving them straight, though I do think you could just do a few waves on the top section if you are in a rush. I typically do 3 layers of hair, this will vary depending on how much hair you have.
I experimented with curling wands and curling irons of various sizes, and finally decided that with this length of hair it is easiest to curl with a flat iron. Mine has a 1" plate and the edges curl slightly, which makes the results a bit more like a "curl" and eliminates ridges.
To start curling I used smaller sections of hair, usually about 1 inch wide. I started the iron almost at the root and then turned it a full 180 degrees. As I slowly pulled the iron through my hair I turned it a second 180 degrees (now I had a 360 turn in my hair) and kept pulling it out.
When I got to the end of my hair, I pulled out the iron and there would be a kind of haphazard curl in it, which is exactly what I wanted! I twisted the curl slightly to elongate the curl, and let the hair cool down in that shape. I continued this process around my entire head. Near my face I made sure to turn the iron away from my face, but otherwise I varied the amount of hair that I was curling and the direction it was curled.
Once I was done curling my hair all over I pulled back a little in the front and secured it with bobby pins. I set it using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hair Spray, which I love because my hair moves around a bit but the curls stayed put!
I don't have the exact same waves as the girls in my Pinterest inspiration, but so far I'm pretty happy! Have you curled your long bob? What are your tips?
