The Wavy Long Bob: How to Do It

The Wavy Long Bob: How to Do It
The ongoing saga of my hair continues! Regular readers may know that I recently unexpectedly chopped my hair, and while I do love my new cut, I need a bit more variety. There are only so many ways that you can wear a long bob!

Luckily, I didn't have to look very far for other options, I'd already been hoarding these pictures in my Pinterest Hair Inspiration Board. Adding some texture and a bit of wave seemed like a logical thing to try out!

how to create a long wavy bob

To create the look, I used products from Vidal Sassoon's Pro Series. First, I wanted to control any frizz (there was a lot of humidity the day I did this hair style), so I washed my hair using their Extreme Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner. To prep my hair for the style I put a small amount (about the size of a nickel) of the Smooth Combing Creme in my wet hair and combed it through with a wide tooth comb. I then used about the size of a large egg of the Extra Firm Hold Mousse. I put this throughout my hair to add volume and help hold on to the style.

how to add waves to your long bob
I start with freshly dried hair. I didn't waste time perfectly blowing it out since I'd be curling it anyways.

Next I sectioned off my hair. I decided that I would add some waves to the under sections of my hair rather than leaving them straight, though I do think you could just do a few waves on the top section if you are in a rush. I typically do 3 layers of hair, this will vary depending on how much hair you have.

styling a long bob with some waves

I experimented with curling wands and curling irons of various sizes, and finally decided that with this length of hair it is easiest to curl with a flat iron. Mine has a 1" plate and the edges curl slightly, which makes the results a bit more like a "curl" and eliminates ridges.

To start curling I used smaller sections of hair, usually about 1 inch wide. I started the iron almost at the root and then turned it a full 180 degrees. As I slowly pulled the iron through my hair I turned it a second 180 degrees (now I had a 360 turn in my hair) and kept pulling it out.

When I got to the end of my hair, I pulled out the iron and there would be a kind of haphazard curl in it, which is exactly what I wanted! I twisted the curl slightly to elongate the curl, and let the hair cool down in that shape. I continued this process around my entire head. Near my face I made sure to turn the iron away from my face, but otherwise I varied the amount of hair that I was curling and the direction it was curled.

Once I was done curling my hair all over I pulled back a little in the front and secured it with bobby pins. I set it using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hair Spray, which I love because my hair moves around a bit but the curls stayed put!

I don't have the exact same waves as the girls in my Pinterest inspiration, but so far I'm pretty happy! Have you curled your long bob? What are your tips?

Get the Look: Rachel Weisz's Low Bun

Rachel Weisz's Low Bun at the Oz the Great and Powerful Premiere
Rachel Weisz rocked an easy and very simple low bun at the premiere of Oz The Great and Powerful. She was styled by Ben Skervin using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series hair products.

1. Mist hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray before blowing hair out with a large round brush to ensure the hair is smooth.

2. Once dry, flat iron the roots and mid lengths of the hair for a glossy finish. Then using a rat tail comb, create a deep side part.

3. Use Extreme Smooth Combing Crème over the surface of the hair and tightly brush the hair back into a low ponytail. Use a hair band to secure the ponytail in place at the nape of the neck.

4. Comb a small amount of Mega Firm Hold Gel through the ponytail to keep the hair together.

5. To create the looped circular bun, start at the bottom of the ponytail and roll the hair underneath it until it reaches the base of the ponytail. Secure the roll with bobby pins.

6. Lastly, smooth gel over the top of the hair for a super shiny look and lock the entire look in place with hairspray to smooth any flyaways.

Get the Look: January Jones and her Pompador at the SAG Awards

January Jones at the Screen Actors Guild Awards
While January Jones’ hair at the Screen Actors Guild Awards this year was unique (how often do you see a woman on the Red Carpet with what looks like an exaggerated pompador?) This look by Renato Campora using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series was definitely unique and very interesting. I had to share how to do it!

Here’s how Renato created January’s look:

1. Starting with damp hair, apply Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Mega Firm Hold Gel to all the hair and brush through so it’s evenly distributed.

2. Using a comb, blow-dry gelled hair to create a sleek, wet look.

3. Once hair is mostly dry, use a round brush and blow dry hair up and back to create volume.

4. In the back, tease hair with a rat tail comb to create all over volume, especially at the ends.

5. To hold the style in place, apply Extra Firm Hold Hairspray to sculpt and lift the hair for a look that will last all night.

Get the Look: Jessica Chastain at the SAG Awards

Jessica Chastain at the SAG Awards
Jessica Chastain looked great at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, as usual. She looked so simple and just... naturally pretty. I love that!

Her Makeup artist Kristofer Buckle simply defined her look and gave her soft red lips.

Products Used:
• YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat in B40
• NEW Lancôme Blush in Peche Joue-Joue
• Giorgio Armani Eye Brow Defining Pencil
• Lancôme Color Design Eye Shadow in Filigree and Snap
• Lancôme Liner Design Gel EyeLiner in Black Fishnets
• Lancôme Hypnôse Star Mascara
• YSL Rouge Volupté Shine in Rouge in Danger

Jessica's hair was a little too simple for this event and dress in my opinion. But that might be because I feel like this was the perfect opportunity for some really great braiding in a half up/half down style. Though, that could have been a tad too bridesmaid-ish for the Red Carpet. I just want to see Jessica's hair like that!

Jessica's hair was styled by Renato Campora using Vidal Sassoon Pro Series.

Here’s how Renato created Jessica’s look:

1. First start by prepping wet hair with Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse for lightweight volume.

2. Then spritz Heat Protect & Shine Spray to protect hair while blow-drying it.

3. Blow dry hair with a round brush until it’s dry. Then, part the hair on the side to give hair extra volume.

4. Using a 1 ½ inch curling iron, curl the ends for 10 seconds and remove for a soft wave. Once the hair cools, brush the curls out with a thin comb to soften the look.

5. To finish, spray a brush with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Extra Firm Hold Hairspray and smooth back the hairs around the face. Finally, mist with hairspray to hold hair in place while leaving it with lots of natural movement.

Get the Look: Rachel Weisz at the 2013 Golden Globes

Rachel Weisz's Hair at the 2013 Golden Globe Awards
For the Golden Globes this year, Rachel Weisz looked amazing with a very old Hollywood Glam look by Celebrity Stylist Ben Skervin. (I admit that I was NOT a fan of the dress. Well, the top was fine, but the bottom... not so much. Hence, I am not showing that part!) But, I loved her hair and makeup.

To get the look at home:
1. Starting with damp hair, apply Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray and blow-dry hair straight.

2. Once hair is dry, tuck hair behind left ear. On that same side, take small sections and curl hair down a 1-inch barrel curling iron. After 20 seconds, remove the iron and pin the section in a roll while it cools. Repeat this process until the whole head is curled.

3. Then, on the untucked side, repeat the same process but with a ½-inch curling iron to give a stronger wave around the face. Once all the hair cools, remove the pinned sections and brush hair into a soft, sexy wave.

4. To keep hair tucked behind the ear, apply a small amount of Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Mega Firm Hold Gel.

5. Lastly, lightly mist with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Extra Firm Hold Hairspray to hold the style in place, leaving it with a sleek, finished look.

Get the Look: Rosario Dawson's Hair at the 2013 Golden Globes

Rosario Dawson Golden Globes
All those pretty 1940's glam waves are great, but there are some hair types that are... a little harder to do that with. Rosario Dawson's hair was styled by Kylee Heath, and he made it look perfect! I think she's one of the prettiest girls in Hollywood, and she definitely proved it at the Golden Globes.

1. First, he started out by prepping damp hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse, specifically at the roots, for lightweight volume.

2. Then, he spritzed sections from the mid shaft through the ends with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray.

3. Kylee then took sections, starting at the nape of the neck, and blow-dried hair with a medium sized boar bristle round brush, mainly focusing on getting lift at the roots while smoothing out the ends.

4. He then curled 2-inch sized sections of hair using a 1¾-inch curling iron. After removing the iron, he lightly sprayed each curl with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray and then pinned each section in place. After curling all her hair and letting it cool, he unpinned and brushed each section out with a Mason Pearson brush.

5. To finish, he lightly teased the roots to create volume and sprayed her hair with hairspray to add sheen and to hold the look for the night.
