Silk'n Flash and Go Update: Did At Home Laser Hair Removal Work?

Silk'n Flash and Go At Home Laser Hair Remover
A few years ago I bought my first at home laser hair removal machine, the Silk'n Sens Epil. I used it for a while and was getting great results... and then I was pregnant and not able to continue using the machine. While I've yet to really find the time to pick the machine back up and treat everything, I really wanted to at least treat a few areas on my face. But, that big machine was a bit of a pain to drag out and even though treating my face would take only a few seconds, it was just a bit too much hassle.

So, recently I was sent the Flash and Go from Silk'n, which features the same technology at the Sens Epil machine, but with only 3 intensity settings instead of 5, and a much smaller and compact size. Yes, it is pretty much the size and set up of a phaser that Captain Kirk would use. It's also small enough that I've just left it in the corner of my makeup vanity area, quickly plug it in when I am going to use it, so it takes about 1-2 minutes at the most to do a treatment. Love that!

It does take a while to see results. I have treated myself about every 2 weeks since November, and I'm just now starting to see a decrease in hair. I think it did take longer to see results than with the Sens Epil, simply because I had that on setting 5 and this was setting 3. Also, I'm sure that my hair is all in very different phases of growth due to continual waxing/plucking, and things were just going in and out of phase. This is much more true on my face than on my legs (where I mostly used the Sens Epil, and which I typically just shave).

I'll definitely be continuing with the Flash and Go. I love how quick and easy it is to use, and I'm already seeing results. While not super cheap at $299, it is much less than the $500-750 that a friend was recently quoted for professional laser hair removal in the same area. (ote that neither pro or at home laser hair removal are completely permanent. You'll need touch ups no matter which way you go. My touch ups are just done at home with the same machine, no appointments needed!

If you're thinking about using an at home hair removal laser, you should definitely go and read my post about how at home laser hair removal works and figure out if you're a good candidate first!

  1. I have the regular Silk'n Sens Epil and always use the highest setting, and am pretty happy with the results. Would you say the highest setting on the Flash and Go is milder than the 5 setting on the regular one?

  2. Costco has this or something like it in their latest book. I know it starts with Silk'n so I'm assuming it's the same company. It's tempting since I don't have much time for appointments.

  3. I honestly never even knew that there were home laser hair removal systems! The price of the unit is high, but not when you compare to in-office treatments. This is worth looking into!!! :)

  4. I have never even thought to try at home laser hair removers before- I really should look into this! Thanks for the wonderful review! :-)

  5. $300 doesn't seem bad at all especially compared to the alternative of braiding your leg hair - of course if you added festive ribbons, that's not a bad option either!

    Best, Lisamarie

  6. I'm with Jessika, I love the idea of having my very own Captain Kirk Phaser! Your point about the hairs all being at different growth phases is extremely interesting too. I know this would be true for me too, as I never catch all the hairs at once with either waxing or threading.

  7. I underwent hair removal several times and it is quite the challenge because I've tried wax and then laser. After trying both, I must say that the laser is more effective.

  8. Doesn't work, don't buy

  9. will it work on indian skin?

    ReplyDelete
  10. It depends a lot on your skin tone. Dark hair and pale skin is best, and I have indian friends that have done laser hair removal but some that never could. If you have any doubts I'd head to a pro, you don't want to burn your skin!

  11. the thing is a total rip off. do not waste your time or money on this product. the postive comments are probably on the company payroll.

  12. I'm afraid of shaving my face, I already have some dark stubble from all the years of plucking. Do you have to shave your face before using it?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Just an FYI for anyone currently looking to purchase, I just found it at Bed Bath & Beyond for $229!

  14. I got this product for Christmas and I was hoping desperately it would work! I started using it and i already saw a difference after one use! I've been using it for about 4 months now and im still seeing a difference! I love this product and I definitely recommend it! To the person worried about shaving their face, don't worry about it, if you're worried about getting dry skin just moisturize the area after a treatment, the more treatments you do the less you'll have to worry about the hair growing in. Only thing is if its for somewhere around the eyes (eyebrows) I wouldn't reccomend it.

  15. Do have to shave your face before each treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I probably would, you want as much of the energy to reach the root of the hair (rather then the hair above the skin) as you can.

  17. Aaahhh I loved this product.
My mom saw the results on my neck (I'm male and within a few months my hair is only growing in weird patches on my neck) and went or and bought her own lol

  18. does it work on grey hairs on your face

    ReplyDelete
  19. Not on grey, it needs to have the color difference between the hair and your skin.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is this safe to use "anywhere" on the body

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think the only place it isn't approved is the face over the cheek level

    ReplyDelete
  22. is it safe for a pregnant women... did somebody use it while pregnant? - thanks

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, it isn't. No one will do the studies to see if at home or in office lasers are safe. There are some case reports on treating things like genital warts with lasers during pregnancy (really!) but that's it. To be on the safe side wait until after delivery.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thank you for responding.... I have been using flash and go in my abdominal area and I just found out that I m pregnant!!! I hope the baby will be safe. I will keep praying!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I think the baby will likely be completely fine! Those articles used professional grade lasers (way more than the Silk'n) and the pregnancies were further along.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I have been using for 3 mo. the hair that comes back thin and very soft . my hair is not black but brown , will it take longer and how much longer ?

    ReplyDelete
  27. It's hard to know how much longer, everyone is different. I had much decreased hair growth after about 3 months of use, but that hair was basically black.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Will it work for redheads? I'm not the typical pale redhead.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It really depends on having a big color difference between your skin and your skin tone. So, it depends on how deep of a red your hair is. You might want to wait until the winter when you're at your palest.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Not safe to use on the face cheeks? :(

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am a red head and my skin tone is fairly pale but the hair on my legs vary from light to a slight red will the flash n go work for me

    ReplyDelete
  32. Probably not, the lasers really rely on having dark hair and light skin. You could probably check with a professional place to see if they could adjust the settings to target your hair, but the lighter hair makes it much less likely that you would be hair free.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am a student and you can guess what the financial implication are.I generally wax my entire pubic area ( Brazilian). I am greek and have very dark hair but kind of light skin. The waxing appointments are quite expensive. Any thoughts about that area? Also, is there a money back guarantee?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'am 59 , Massive hair (Like A man ) on my upper lip, chin , neck , cheeks , arms legs you name it ...Would I still Pluck face before use ..and do you have to shave (legs etc) before use ?

    ReplyDelete
  35. So, you need to have hair under the surface of the skin for the laser to target, so with waxing or plucking will remove that hair and the laser won't work. You'll need to shave for a while and use the laser when you know that there's hair under there. I would definitely shave before use, any hair on the surface of the skin can absorb the laser instead, you want it all going under the skin.

  36. Is it necessary that i have to shave before using silk.n flash & cant not wax instead if i am using it on my face. as i have never shaved my face & is there any side effect like "not able to conceive" or any issues as such if i use it for my private parts?

    ReplyDelete
  37. There aren't any side effects like that. It's better to shave if you have dark hair, but you can try it without.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I was wondering how many times a week/month on average the treatment should be done. Thank you in advance for your help.

    ReplyDelete
  39. There's a schedule that comes with the machine, it's every few weeks at first and then after you see more results it is less often.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I just got my flash and go for Christmas and was wondering if I should be applying lotion or anything after the treatments? i didn't notice anything mentioned in the booklet about it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You can do whatever you want afterwards. It won't affect the treatment at all, but if your skin is irritated a little lotion is probably a good idea!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I want to use this on my upper lip - I only have 2-3 dark hairs there - the rest are very light and fine. I don't want to risk shaving and have the lighter ones come back courser - just to get rid of the darker ones... Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  43. The hair on the surface of the skin might absorb some of the light's energy, meaning it isn't hitting the root of the hair to kill it basically. It will likely take more treatments, but it's worth a shot!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi - I have been waxing my legs for 20 years and my hairs come back black but finer and with big gaps between. I am so tired of going every 5 weeks, so I ordered the flash and go with the aim of getting rid of leg hair forever. If I shave my legs and stimulate hair growth again (so that 3 spikies come out of 1 follicle) will I land up creating more hair than I have now - or will they all disappear? I am also going on holiday in December (where I will suntan) - should I refrain from using the Captain Kirk phaser on holiday then?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Well, there's no way that I know of to stimulate hair growth as you mention, if so someone would have cured male pattern baldness and be insanely rich! After waxing for so long it would take a while for your hair follicles to all get back into sync, but many of them likely aren't producing any more, waxing can result in patchy hair loss as you've mentioned. You could grow out some hair and treat it with the laser and it would work, provided your skin is fair and the hair is dark. I would definitely refrain from using the phaser when tan, most of the energy will be absorbed by the skin rather than the hair, so you wouldn't be doing much of anything to the hair, instead you could just burn your skin.
    hope that helps!

  46. I want to use this on my face, cheekbones. I have a light complexion and very fine white/blond hairs above my jawline. Will it work on that or does the hair have to be brown or black?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Very light hairs can't be targeted by any lasers, they need to have the difference in color to absorb the energy. Sorry!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Is this safe to use to remove all hair from the entire pubic area (same results as a Brazilian wax) and not just the bikini line?

    ReplyDelete
  49. It should work fine if you have light skin and dark hair

    ReplyDelete
  50. Shaving hair does NOT make hair come back thicker, darker or coarser. This is the oldest of wives tales. I have shaved off the white peach fuzz as well as waxed it and it's still exactly the same. After 20 years or so I'm pretty sure I would look like a gorilla by now. I just bought this product and have high hopes, seems to be effective so far.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi..I am using Flash and go for the first time.It is better waxing the area that I want to treat or shaving? I wand to know if it has more results with waxing..

    ReplyDelete
  52. Waxing is actually the exact wrong thing to do. As explained above, the device depends upon having hair in the follicle below the surface of the skin. If you wax or tweeze, that hair gets pulled out. there's nothing for the energy to target, so there's no way it will work.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I was wondering would it work for the entire private area. Is it safe to do it there?

    ReplyDelete
  54. It depends on the person. In theory it should be ok on any skin. However, once you shave that area, the skin underneath is usually a darker pigmentation than other areas (such as your arm), so you'll need to be careful in those areas. I wouldn't use it on darker skin areas due to the likelihood of getting a skin burn.
