I'm a new mom. Yes, again. I have a 2 month old, and my almost 4 year old, and while I'm still out on Maternity Leave, that changes in about 2 weeks so I'll have even less time on my hands! There are currently only 24 hours in a day, and I have a lot of things I need to squeeze into that time! You can imagine that one of the first things to go were my time consuming beauty rituals. No more mani/pedis, no more facial masks and no more intensive hair treatments. That time is now spent nursing or snuggling my littlest one. (Don't get me wrong, my husband will tell you that this is really no hardship. I will gladly spend an afternoon snuggling on the couch. My skin is suffering for my shift in priorities though!)
Since I can't seem to find extra time during the day, I've been upping my nightly beauty routine (well, for those nights that I do get to do my routine before I fall into bed!)
I've found a few intensive treatments for hair and skin. They do their job while I sleep (or nurse) all night long! Only a short amount of time is needed to apply the product and I wake up prettier. This is something I can definitely fit into my routine!
I'm showcasing my favorites here, but you can find these (and other) products and lower priced counterparts over in my eBay post, Splurge vs Steal: Overnight Masks to Solve All Your Beauty Woes.
Face
With the fluctuating hormones and start of winter, my skin has been dry, dry, and dry! My usual remedy is the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate, a lightweight oil that really seals in a lot of moisture. It's great for skin everywhere (I love it on my hands as well), and I only need a few drops. When my skin is extra, extra dry, I'll layer on Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask over the Kiehl's. It is a thick and slightly sticky cream and it really brings a lot of hydration to my skin! You can use it as a quick 10 minute treatment, or apply a lighter layer and rub it into your skin for an overnight treatment. When layered over the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery the combination is unbeatable, no more dryness!
Regular exfoliation encourages cell turnover, softens the skin and evens out skin tone. I love using my Clarisonic, but regular use of other gentle exfoliators helps too! I love my Kate Somerville ExfoliKate and I've also been obsessing over the Kiehl's Over-Night Biological Peel. It is a slow release of active ingredients so it is easier to tolerate.
Hair
My hair seems to be doing really well lately. I really think it comes down to 3 things:1) I splurged on very expensive shampoo before I had the baby. Really, I discovered a few years ago that if I use Kerastase Chroma Riche Shampoo, my hair is healthy, shiny and easy to style. I don't even really need the conditioner/mask that goes with it (I mostly have been using Redken All Soft Conditioner with it). The key for me is this shampoo. I bought it via a sale over at Rue La La, and it pops up every few months.
2) Because of my lack of time, I have been shampooing my hair less. 2-3x/week, and with that goes less heat styling. Instead, lots of dry shampoo.
3) Overnight hair masks! If my hair is starting to get a little frizzy/dry, I've been using either Darshana (my Darshana review) or René Furterer Karité Intense Overnight Nourishing Treatment. Just a little on my hair, roughly mid-shaft and below, is all I need. I use so little that I don't even need to put a towel on my pillow at night, though you could use more. I just wash it out in the morning and the result is softer, healthier looking hair without needing to spend 30 minutes in a hot towel with a mask.
Hands
With a new baby comes a lot of hand washing. A lot of hand washing. Add in the winter weather and yes, it is hard to keep my hands well moisturized! Barielle Intensive Hand Treatment Cream is meant to be used with gloves, but this super moisturizing treatment is just as good without anything on your hands. These are just the overnight treatments I've been using lately.
