Drugstore Makeup Finds from a Beauty Editor

Amy Marturana has written for Huffington Post, and Prevention Magazine. She's currently a writer and managing editor at You Beauty. I was able to ask her about her favorite beauty products and tips, she previously shared her favorite mascaras and mascara tips, great eyeshadow advice, and how she gets perfect foundation.

Best drugstore mascara is L'Oreal Butterfly Intenza. The brush, similarly to Benefit's, is like a mini comb that keeps lashes long, separated, and clump-free.

I also love Simple's new Micellar Makeup Remover Wipes- they're gentle and work on both the face and eyes (regular, not waterproof makeup).

The best drugstore foundation is L'Oréal True Match Super Blendable Makeup. It's super blendable and really does match a huge variety of skintones.

CoverGirl Colorlicious Lipstick has great color payoff, and it's super moisturizing.

Beauty Bloggers and Their Favorite Drugstore Foundations

I've already shared by blogging friends' favorite foundations and favorite BB and CC creams, today I'm sharing their favorite drugstore foundations. The drugstore foundations of 2014 are not the foundations of 10 or even 5 years ago. Technology is advancing, prices are dropping, and the quality of today's foundations really are much more similar to higher end products than they ever have been in the past. You no longer "have" to splurge on a higher end foundation to get a great product that matches your skin. I've included a few extra BB creams, though there are some great drugstore BB Cream picks in the BB & CC Cream post too.

"I normally turn my nose up at drugstore foundations. However, Revlon Colorstay (1, get it here or here) (for oily/combo skin) is my all time favorite. It provides flawless full coverage, lasts all day, and never looks cakey."
- Krystle from Baking Beauty

"Drugstore-wise I'm lately loving Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup (2, get it here or here)."
- Brooke from Blushing Noir

"Maybelline FIT Foundation (3, get it here)"
- Prime Beauty

"I'm loving the Rimmel Matte 9-in-1 BB Cream (4, get it here). It's liquidy, but dries down to a satin matte finish that doesn't feel or look too dry. Plus, it has medium coverage to hide any problem areas! For something lighter, I turn to the NYC Smooth Skin BB Cream (8), which has a brightening effect for dewy, luminous skin."
- Miranda from Slashed Beauty

"CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation (5, get it here)."
Heather from Crazy Beautiful Makeup

"Revlon Age Defying Foundation (6, get it here)"
- Alyson from The Gloss Menagerie

"Revlon's PhotoReady BB Cream with SPF 30 (7, get it here or here)."
- Sandra D. from Mom's Makeup Stash

Beauty Bloggers and Their Favorite BB and CC Creams

Recently I shared the favorite foundations of my beauty blogging friends, today I'm sharing their BB and CC Creams! I admit that I rarely use a full foundation now, I just love the ease of combining multiple steps into one product. A great cream can be your daily lotion, SPF, anti-aging serum, foundation and sometimes even concealer! It's a huge time saver for this mommy.

"I also love Missha's BB Creams (1, get it here), which give skin a gorgeous finish and stellar coverage."
- Sheila Arkee from Painted Ladies

"Missha M Perfect Cover BB Cream (1, get it here). This is one of the original BB creams and has been around for ages. Unlike some products that slap on the BB label and are really nothing more than tinted moisturizers, this is the real deal. It covers imperfections, adds in anti-aging ingredients, and has a high SPF."
- Carleen from Beauty and Fashion Tech

"One of my faves is Amarté Natural Finish BB Cream SPF 36 (2, get it here). It has a lovely, satin finish that adds a subtle healthy-skin glow without the unwanted shine and the formula provides medium buildable coverage that evens out my complexion beautifully and covers up most of the imperfections."
- Harshleen from BeautyTidbits

"I have very sensitive skin with a bit of rosacea so when I found one that my skin likes, I stick with it. I use CoverGirl Smoothers BB Cream (3, get it here). It is not high enough SPF for outdoor activities but its perfect for workdays and errands."
- Deb from No-Nonsense Beauty Blog

"Currently my favorite BB Cream is the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment (4, get it here). This multi-tasking BB Cream helps create the appearance of natural-looking, flawless skin, as it contains a primer, moisturizer, light foundation, anti-aging treatment, and sunscreen."
- Christina-Lauren from Inspirations & Celebrations

"Cover FX BB Gel (5, get it here)."
- Nidia from Lit From Within

"Cover FX CC Cream (6, get it here). It provides the perfect amount of coverage for me and looks amazing when applied with a damp beauty blender. I wear shade N-Light mixed with Face Atelier Zero Minus Ultra Foundation (, get it here) for a perfect shade match."
- Courtney from Phyrra

"IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50 (7, get it here) - This CC cream offers buildable, medium to full coverage with a dewy finish that I love! It takes care of any redness and my acne scars or dark spots almost completely without looking like I’m wearing a ton of makeup."
- Harshleen from BeautyTidbits

"IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ (7, here)."
- Jessika from Polish Insomniac

"I like the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream (8, get it here). It's light, more like a tinted moisturizer, but gives good coverage and is buildable."
- Danielle from The Mani-ac

"My favorite bb cream is Garnier Skin Renew in light/medium (9, get it here or here). That stuff's amazing, and the only foundation type product I wear. I've never been into true foundations and it took me a while to accept tinted moisturizers, even, but this is light, natural, and never cakey. I don't know how close it is to the original Asian bb creams but for this gal, it's perfect."
- Liesl from Liesl Loves Pretty Things

"I don't use foundation - but if I am looking to use a BB Cream, Garnier BB Cream (9, get it here) is a favorite. I've tried a few others, but find they often do not go well against my skin tone."
- Honeygirl from Honeygirl's World

"This is a tough one since I really like a lot of BB formulas. I would have to say my favourite is Kiehl's Skin Tone Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream with SPF 50 (10, get it here), but I also really like Dior's Diorskin Nude BB Creme (12, get it here)."
Sandra D. from Mom's Makeup Stash

"I'm obsessed with the Pond's BB Cream (11, get it here). It has quite a bit of coverage for a BB Cream, but it is super easy to use! I can just smear it on my face and let it sink in while I dry my hair. I barely need to blend it at all, and the finish is pretty flawless."

Beautzy Blog's 2 Day Makeup Kit for LA

Today Linda from Beautzy Blog is sharing her 2 day travel kit! She say, "I travel a lot. Because I’m in LA often for only 2 days, I pretty much have a set kit that I take. A few things vary here and there, but for my usual 'visit the in-laws, hang out with friends, chat with the cousins' LA trip, I take these things."

1. Perlier Honey Miel Face Royal Elixir Youth Serum (get it here): I can use this all over - face, eyes, and neck.

7. CoverGirl Colorlicious Lipgloss in Pinkalicious (get it here): This is a pretty color that works for day & night.

10. NARS Orgasm Blush (get it here): I take this color because I love the way it looks on me, and I have 2.

11. Urban Decay Electric palette (get it here): If we have plans to go out in the evening to the City Walk or somewhere fun, I’ll usually also pack this palette. I love bright eyeshadows!

Favorite Contouring and Highlighting Products of Makeup Artists

Recently I wrote a piece for Babble, Optical Illusions 101: Highlighting and Contouring Tips from the Pros. I asked the pros in the piece what their favorite makeup to contour with is, and they spilled! I love seeing what products the professional makeup artists think works best. Which ones will you add to your shopping list?

"I really like using Bobbi Brown's bronzer (1) to contour with. It isn't too orange, and is perfect for contouring."
- Brianna Gonzalez, also blogs at Briksia

"When contouring the cheeks I tend to gravitate towards big paddle brushes or fan brushes. My very favorite is the It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Fan Brush (review, 2)."
- Laura, blogs at My Newest Addiction, and she is available as a makeup artist

"Benefit's Hoola bronzer (3) works well for almost every skin tone and surprisingly, the included brush works well for sweeping the initial color under your cheek bones as long as you blend it out with another brush afterwards. I love highlighters right now and one of my favorites is NARS Highlighting Blush in Albatross (4). A great duo would be LORAC TANtalizer Highlighter & Matte Bronzer Duo (5)."
- Ivy Boyd blogs at Wake Up For Makeup

"IT cosmetics makes an amazing highlighting and contour palette (CC+ Radiance Palette) (6)."
- Christina Farrell also blogs at The Makeup Blogger

"Tom Ford's Highlight and Shader Duo (7) is the best for both pros and everyday people. It is so natural and easy to blend, I love using this to create a new face."
- Dimitri James founder of Skinn Cosmetics

"My favorite foundation to contour with is Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation (8). I discovered it during my trip to Sephora."
- Meg Raiano

"I love Senna's Face sculpting kit (9). It was originally developed for the cast of Desperate Housewives and it's basically all you need in order to contour and highlight. I also use Kevyn Aucoin's Sculpting Powder (11) and Tom Ford's Highlight and Shader Duo (7)."

"Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Eye Pencil (2) for smokey and long wearing."
- Katie Dahlstrom

"Maybelline Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner (3) in black is my absolute favorite. It can be worn for a smoky look or a precise line, just depending on how you apply it."
- Meghana Prasad

"For a liquid liner, I love Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner (4). The felt tip makes it super easy to apply and it will not budge until you take it off."
- Meghana Prasad

"My favorite liner of all time is Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner (4), and it is exactly like using a pen which you probably do every single day."
- Meg Raiano

"For a graphic look or classic cat eye I prefer to use a liquid liner as the fine tip applicator allows for precise application. I love ZuZu Luxe Liquid Liners (5) as they are long lasting and water resistant."
- Gabriel DeSantino is the founder of Gabriel Cosmetics

"The Curve Liner by NYX (6) is available in drugstores. It looks strange, but the shape actually makes it easier to apply on yourself."
- Sarah Salice

"Affordable and long lasting is Rimmel Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner (7). I just love their waterproof liners and eye crayons!!"
- Regina Ventimiglia

"My three favorites are Rimmel Scandal Eyes Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner (7, review), Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Liners (8), and NYX Slide On Liners (9, review), which are dupes for the Urban Decay Liners."
- Sheila, blogs at The Painted Ladies, and she is available as a makeup artist

"I also love Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil (8). This has staying power. Once you draw your line, though, you have a short window of time to blend because this will set quickly and stay put."
- Liz Fuller

"I love Clinique Quickliner For Eyes Intense (10). It is super blendable and with the sponge tipped blender on the other end it is really easy to blend."
- Liz Fuller

"When I have a client who is attending an important event or if I have a bride, I usually use a gel liner. Make sure to apply it as close to the upper lashes as possible. It's long-wearing and very precise. It's a great option when doing a cat-eye as well. This is not really blendable. I like Bobbi Brown's Long Wear Gel Eyeliner (11)."
- Liz Fuller

"I love using white eyeliner along the waterline to open eyes, metallic pencils like ZuZu Luxe 24 Karat (12) can be applied to the inner corner of your eyes to add instant luminosity, apply to your waterline to create the illusion of bigger eyes or use under the arch of your brow for instant highlighting effect."
- Gabriel DeSantino is the founder of Gabriel Cosmetics

"Stila makes a great gel eye liner (Stila Smudge Pot, 13), with the right precision brush, close-up mirror & steady hand, you can make a great line."

The Best Makeup Removers that Makeup Artists Love! Via 15MinuteBeauty.com

I'm always in search of a good makeup remover and since my favorite (Hard Candy's Take It Off) is no longer carried in stores near me, I've been looking for a new option! I asked some of my favorite professional makeup artists for their favorite makeup removers. They had a lot of great options! Let me know if you have a favorite that isn't shown here, I'm shopping for a new one!

Katie Dahlstrom
"DHC's Deep Cleansing Oil (1)is awesome for removing makeup, even stubborn waterproof mascara!"

Sheila Arkee, blogs at The Painted Ladies, and she is available as a makeup artist
"DHC Cleansing Oil (1, review) is a modern marvel. I cannot get over how well this product works to completely remove every speck of makeup. I also like Neutrogena Cleansing Wipes (2) - they're great for quick eyeshadow changes!"

Liz Fuller
"I use a generic version of Cetaphil (3) to wash my face and remove makeup, including eye makeup. It is inexpensive, lasts a long time, and it really does get off all of my makeup, even long-wearing formulas."

Lia Parisyan is a makeup artist, Examiner.com's NY Beauty Expert, and also contributes Health & Beauty articles to CareerAddict
"Organic coconut oil. I've tried everything from organic, store-bought makeup removers to cold cream to luxury brands, but nothing works quite as well as coconut oil. It doesn't irritate your eyes or cause burning, and it also doubles as a natural moisturizer. I keep on jar in my cupboard, and another one in the bathroom. I really like Artisana's Raw Coconut Oil (4). It's super affordable, and a little goes a long way. "

Sarah Salice
"Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser (5), it removes everything. I don't need wipes, special stuff for my eyes, just the cleanser. I squirt it into my hand, massage gently with warm water all over my face and especially eye area and everything comes off."

James DeMarco
"My favorite makeup remover is L’Oréal Paris blue remover (L'Oreal Paris Skin Expertise Eye Makeup Remover, 6)."

Regina Ventimiglia
"Dermalogica PreCleanse (7) but if you need Oil-Free Formula, their Soothing Eye Makeup Remover (8) is gentle and effective."

Haley Kulow
"Baby wipes (9) followed by a solid washing with Clarisonic and cleanser."

Margina Dennis
"Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips (10). Gentle and dissolves even waterproof makeup!"

Julia Papworth
"I love a traditional cleansing wipe such as Ponds (11) to get off the majority of the makeup. For the eye area I like to use a more heavy duty remover such as Clinique's Take the Day Off (10), which easily dissolves makeup without you having to tug or pull."

Karol Young Moses, blogs at Add Lip Gloss and Stir
"Hands down, Lancôme Bifacil (12). Breaks down your eye makeup including stubborn mascara, opthomalogist tested and safe for sensitive eyes. On the lower end, Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover (13) is a great alternative."

My favorite mascaras are 1. Maybelline Great Lash for natural looking lashes, 3. L’Oreal Voluminous for overall amazing lashes, and my newest favorite is 2. Maybelline The Falsies Big Lashes with a dual-ended wand, that is great for top and bottom lashes!

4. Maybelline 24 Hour Tattoo Crème Shadow- I recently found these and I can not tell you how much I love these cream eyeshadows. They go on like a dream and when used with an eyeshadow primer, they last all day. My favorite go to is Bad to the Bronze!

5. Maybelline EyeStudio Gel Liner- This eyeliner is BETTER than the more expensive brands. It goes on and stays on, and comes with a great brush!

6. Jordana Retractable Lip Liner Pencils- They do the trick in keeping lipstick from creeping into fine lines for a really cheap price. I hear a lot of makeup artists talk about how great these liners are!

7. Neutrogena MoistureShine Gloss- These glosses go on beautifully and there is such a pretty range of colors from shimmery to rich tones to choose from!

8. Maybelline Expert Brow & Eyeliner Pencils- Products that do double-duty are always great. Use these pencils to fill in sparse brows or use as an eyeliner, they are so inexpensive and you get two in a pack!

9. Suave Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo- I use this product all the time! All the time!!! It is great for adding body to the roots of limp hair and for day old hair that you don’t have time to wash.

10. St. Ives Apricot Scrub- It’s cheap, it works, I love it!
(Note from Christine: Lots of people love this scrub, but this is always the one to be careful of! It does have some sharp edges on the grit and you can do some damage to your skin. Scrub gently, your goal is not a pink face!)

11. Revlon SuperLusterous Lipsticks- They are amazing quality and are just as good, if not better than the more expensive lipsticks. Some of my favorite colors are Blushing Mauve, Blushing Nude, Pink in the Afternoon, Coralberry, Spicy Cinnamon, Really Red, and my newest favorite, Rich Girl Red.

Hair Stylists Reveal the Trick to Getting Stick Straight Hair to Curl, AND Stay That Way!

Nothing to Disclose

get your hair to hold curl
I'm sure a lot of us straight haired girls have complained at one point or another that we can't get our hair to hold curl. Like, at all. Usually the words "stick straight" are also used (though really, sticks aren't straight?), so I called in a few experts to find out their tricks to getting our hair curly in the salon. (And I admit that I couldn't resist buying this stock picture, doesn't she look like she's maniacally happy that her hair is finally curled?)

Crystal Casey
I like to use Joico's medium hold hair spray before using the iron then once I'm done curling, I spray the curls with Joico's Firm Hold hairspray. Let the curls cool down while you apply make up or get dressed. Then use Straight Sexy Hair's shine spray all over and finger out the curls. DO NOT BRUSH THEM! An extra spray of Firm Hold never hurts.

Alfredo Lewis
I take round sections of hair, starting at the bottom and build my foundation. I go section by section, spraying each with a strong holding spray before using a curling iron. I hold the iron upside down and wrap each section tightly around the iron. Hold and then release.

Joshua Ristaino
To help hair hold curls I like to use either the Oribe Curl Shaping Mousse or the Rene Furterer Acanthe Curl Enhancing Leave-in Fluid. Both can be applied to wet hair and diffused. The key is not to play around with the curls until the hair is completely dry.

Greg Ruggeri
I use evo's liquid rollers curl balm and their salty dog cocktail beach spray (sea salt spray), complimented with a few clips.

Andrea Dion Jacobs
Curling with an iron hair should be dry and a little “dirty”. Day old hair is perfect, if not spray nice workable hair spray throughout the hair, I like Bumble and Bumble Classic and brush through. Spray each section again with hair spary as you iron the hair, clipping up the curl as you go along. Once all clipped up let “set” for a minute or 2 (great time to do your make up) then release and style. You can always work out a curl too tight than desired then try to make it tighter after the fact.

The Favorite Eye Shadow Combos of Makeup Artist Elizabeth Moore

The Favorite Eye Shadow Combos of Makeup Artist Elizabeth Moore

MAC Cosmetics is one of the most color savvy brands on the market, and their eye shadow collection showcases just this. A beautiful combination of shadows is Crystal Avalanche (for giving the inner corner of each eye a twinkle), Vanilla (to add soft, sheer color beneath the brow bone), All That Glitters (for a sparkling wash of champagne color across the entire eyelid), Deep Damson (to shade the outer corners of the eyes with a rich burgundy) and Cork (to give a warm, brown shade and add dimension to the creases of each eye).

A Makeup Artist Picks her favorite neutral MAC shades for any eye
I also frequently look to Brule (pale ivory), Omega (cool taupe), Wedge (mid-tone brown) and Embark (warm, rich brown), all from MAC, to create softly highlighted and contoured eyes that don't look "made up". With these shades, all matte and soft satin textures, you can create sculpted eyes that look like you were born with that bone structure!

best mufe eye shadow colors
If you're feeling extra funky, pickup an assortment of colors from the incomparable Make Up For Ever. Vibrant purples can transfer easily from summer to fall. Matte Flesh is a strong matte shade that can highlight the brow bone or be used to diffuse and blend other bolder colors together. Press Lilac (a satin shade) across the eyelid and under the lash line for a strong color statement. Finish the look by blending Dark Purple (another matte choice) softly through the entire crease of the eye to bring depth and additional color to your application.

The best NARS and Kevyn Aucoin Eye Shadow Palettes
NARS is another line that is easily accessible to both the everyday makeup wearer and professional artist. My current favorite from this line is a trio of eyeshadows called Ramatuelle. One pallette contains a stunning array of colors - one metallic silver, a soft peach and an additional warm apricot shade. The colors are perfect to shade and line the eyes without having to fuss over various containers.

For a natural look that still brings dimension to the face, I always turn to Kevyn Aucoin's Essential Eyeshadow Set in Palette #1. It comes with five shades ranging from a bright, eggshell to a deep true brown. The various fleshtones allow for fresh looks to compliment the day or deep, chic eyes for a night on the town. Don't be afraid to use a tone similar to your skin shade just beneath the cheek bones to contour the face as well! Think outside the box with your makeup choices. If you like the way it looks, it's right for you!

MAC Nylon or Shroom Eye Shadows for everyday wear. If you prefer loose powders I love Temptu's glitters in copper, gold, and silver. They can be used with a Mixing Medium and sent through the Air Brush Gun for a translucent effect or use with a make up brush dry or add water for a luxurious shimmer effect. Fighting the Frizz: The Hair Doc Shares Her Favorite Smoothing Secrets!

Nothing to Disclose

best ways to de-frizz your hair

Super Hydrating hair prodcuts to fight frizz

To avoid frizz, I recommend keeping your hair ends trimmed every 6 to 8 weeks; for hair that has lots of elasticity, you can trim every 3 months. This consistent trimming is a great way to avoid frizz on both straight hair and curly textured hair as well. Visit your stylist for the hydrating conditioners and suggested styling products to keep the frizz in control.

With naturally curly, smooth, wavy or kinky hair, I suggest making use of moisturizing conditioners and shampoos daily. These are products designed for high humidity. They hydrate the hair from the inside out. The great thing about this recommendation is that these moisturizing products work for relaxed hair, too.

The higher the humidity, the more smoothness and shine will begin to take place on the hair shaft. The hair will feel just as soft to the touch as it will be pleasant to smell. Some of these conditioners can be a bit expensive, but you will truly love the results every time. Oh, and the distinct fragrances and smells of these products I’m recommending are to die for!

These lines provide hydration moisture and healthy building for both the hair and the scalp, but I especially recommend these products:
Kevin Murphy line: Hydrate-Me wash shampoo, and Hydrate-Me Rinse conditioner.
Obliphica: Intensive Nourishing Shampoo and Intensive Extreme Shine Nourishing conditioner.
