Get the Look: Edgy Braids Worthy of Pinterest from the Marissa Webb Spring/Summer 2015 Runway

Edgy braid tutorials from the Marissa Webb Spring/Summer 2015 Runway

If you're like me, you drool over the intricate braids over on Pinterest. I try to follow some of the directions, though I fully admit that I'm only really able to follow my friend Christina's directions over on Hair Romance (and yes, I was totally name dropping there. I know Christina. She is super funny and sweet and yes, has the best Aussie accent ever.)

Anyways, I love that these braids have directions that are easy to follow, they used TRESemmé products to create them for the runway, and they're more edgy than many other braids out there. Not so Bohemian, these would be perfect for going out at night (New Year's Eve?) Both looks were created by TRESemmé Stylist Jeanie Syfu.

What You'll Need for Both Looks:
TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Mousse
TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Hair Spray
If you need added volume, they used extensions by Beauty Works Online
 as necessary.

Braided Pompadour Tutorial

Braided Pompadour:

1. Apply TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Mousse on damp hair and rough-dry ends for volume and texture. Finish blow-dry using a round brush to create fullness through the top of the head and the hairline.

2. Using the end of your comb, section off the center portion of the hair three-fourths of the way down and clip up.

3. Create a Dutch braid (in side out or reverse French braid) on both sides of the head using the loose hair, beginning at the temple and working your way to the nape of the neck. Braid the remaining lengths, leaving ends out, and fasten with a clear elastic.

4. Mist top section of hair with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Hair Spray and lightly brush along the part.

5. Begin French braid, leaving additional volume at the front and base. Gather hair along the part, working 90 degrees from the head, and finish braiding lengths of the hair leaving ends out. Fasten with clear elastic.

6. Gather all three braids and twist into a low bun, leaving ends loose.

7. Brush the completed French braid upward creating a wind blown effect and spray with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Hair Spray.

Five Strand Braid tutorial

Five-Strand Braid:
1. Prep damp hair with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Mousse and rough-dry the lengths with fingers for texture and lift. Finish blow-dry with a round brush at the hairline for a soft, airy perimeter of wisps.

2. Once hair is dry, create a deep side part on the right side of the head, then back-brush hair for extra volume and spray lightly with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Hair Spray.

3. Divide hair into five equal strands at the nape of the neck and begin weaving the farthest right section over and under each part, working your way to the left.

4. Take the furthest left section of hair and weave over and under each part, working your way to the right.

5. Repeat steps four and five until braid is complete, leaving ends loose and fasten with a clear elastic.

6. Loosen braid by gently pulling apart and leave airy wisps to frame the face. Mist finished look with TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Hair Spray.

Easy to Use Volumizing Tool: Voloom Review

Easy to Use Volumizing Tool: Voloom Review

Yes, check it out. That is the craziest flat iron ever. Well, obviously it isn't a flat iron, there's no way that it will create silky straight hair. In fact, it is just the exact opposite. Voloom is a crimper that add "volume pockets", specially crimped areas of hair, to add tons of volume to your hair. Exactly where you want it, sans product, and it lasts for days.

Voloom hair volume crimper review

The secret really is in the shape of those volume pockets. People have been doing this for years with regular crimpers, but the zig zag pattern tends to align itself and go flat after a while.

hair tool to add a ton of volume to your hair

Voloom is pretty easy to use, just clip the upper layers of your hair out of the way, they even give you great crocodile hair clips to get that job done. Voloom can be set to any temp you want with the +/- buttons, and you'll see the current temp in the digital display. Above is what the hair looks like when you've crimped it.

Volumized Hair with Voloom Pics

Here's a quick look at my before and after. Yes, I have a ton of hair, and I've just roughly blow dried my hair, so I have quite a bit of volume already (don't be fooled, that volume will weigh itself down within a few hours #toomuchhair). After my hair has a lot more volume. I could move to Texas and not be embarrassed by my flat hair. (Is that true about Texas? I've really never been there, but I'm going to believe that the stereotype is right.)

This extra volume is a lot more than I see with a dry shampoo, it can last for a few days and I can put it wherever I want. It definitely helps me add a day or two to a hair washing, something that is really important to this mommy of a newborn! (Hence, I'm looking a little tired here. Don't mind me, I took these pics after a few *very* rough nights, not even my super high coverage concealer could help me!)

Super Sleek Hair on the Runway! Kérastase and Odile Gilbert at The Row Spring/Summer 2015

As simple as this hair looks, I kind of doubted that it was completely straight forward. Such straight, sleek and healthy appearing hair is not something that happens overnight (and certainly not immediately before a runway show), so I fully admit that I was curious about the products used just for my own future use! What products could become a go-to when I need hair that looks sleeker.

This look was created by Odile Gilbert for Kérastase Paris, The Row Spring/Summer 2015 Show.

Hair products for super sleek straight hair

What You'll Need:
Baume Double Je: Half paste/half cream formula that offers medium hold and adjustable radiance
Forme Fatale: Blowdry gel with an extra-fine texture that perfectly shapes hair to give all-over volume and body that lasts
Kératine Thermique: Smooth-taming milk that instantly tames frizz and protects the hair fiber from humidity
Laque Dentelle: Micro-fine diffusion hairspray that sets all styles in place with a flexible long-lasting hold

Get The Look:
1. On damp hair, apply Kératine Thermique to smooth strands and provide heat protection

2. Using a paddle brush, blowdry hair straight

3. Section by section, apply Forme Fatale to keep hair’s shape

4. Finish with Baume Double Je to smooth flyaways and lightly mist Laque Dentelle for hold

Get the Look: Amazing Waves and A Quick Chignon at Zang Toi

At the Zang Toi Spring/Summer 2015 Runway Show, hairstylist Eiji Yamane of Eiji Salon worked with René Furterer products to create two amazing hair looks on the models. This was a special show, it was the 25th Anniversary of Zang Toi, and they created a limited edition René Furterer by Zang Toi: 25th Anniversary Special Edition Box. The box contained René Furterer’s Vegetal Sculpting Gel, Styling Wax, Modeling Paste and Glossing Spray. All of these products were used backstage to create the hair looks. The box is available while supplies last on ZangToi.com as well as René Furterer salons.

What I loved about these hair looks was that not only were they beautiful, but each model make a quick hair transition during the show! This is great for going out after work, I love when 1 look can be quickly and easily transformed into another look.

Look One: Beachy But Polished Waves

What You'll Need:
Fioravanti No Rinse Detangling Spray
Sculpting Gel
1.5" Curling Iron
Glossing Spray
Vegetal Finishing Spray

To Get the Look:
1. The style was started on dry hair. Hair was parted in the middle and lightly sprayed with water. If hair was tangled, Fioravanti No Rinse Detangling Spray was misted throughout the hair and combed through.

2. Hair was then sectioned off and starting at the bottom layer a little Sculpting Gel was evenly distributed to the hair. The hair was then dried straight to prepare for the waves.

3. Once the hair was smooth, a 1.5" curling iron was used to create curls. Use random pieces of hair and curl in opposite directions to add variety to the curls. Note that the curls are a little loose and they start at about the level of the ears and go down to the very end of the hair. For the show, models had extensions added as well.

4. A few sprays of Glossing Spray were used to add shine and then hair was sprayed with Vegetal Finishing Spray for hold.

 photo zang-toi-chignon.jpg

Look Two: Low, Sophisticated Chignon

What You'll Need:
Styling Wax
Hair Pins

To Get the Look:
1. The look was created very quickly backstage in the middle of the show. First, hair was smoothed with a small amount of Styling Wax.

2. The hair was then pulled back to the nape of the neck and twisted into a very low chignon (which literally just means a bun at the nape of the neck) and pins were used to secure it in place. The hair was pulled out slightly to make it frame the face and look a bit more casual.

Perfect Waves: Joan Smalls and René Furterer Show You How to Get The Look

Joan Smalls' hit the red-carpet at the WSJ. Magazine 2014 “Innovator of the Year” Awards at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City on November 5, 2014, and her hair was all kinds of amazing! It was created by Jennifer Yepez of The Wall Group, here's how she created the look, which I think is perfect for day or night! You could easily wear this style to work, brunch, out with friends...

1. Start by applying René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Foam to wet hair, from roots to tips.

2. Spray hair with René Furterer Lissea Thermal Protecting Spray, a lightweight thermal protecting spray.

3. For curly or wavy hair, use a big round brush to blow dry hair section-by-section the hair. For straight hair, just rough dry the hair with your hands until it’s completely dry. Shown: T3 Featherweight 2 blow dryer

4. Starting at the back of your hair, take a section and pin the rest of your hair up (shown, Sephora Hold it Together Blow Dry Clips, they have an alligator shape that holds a lot of hair at one time). Using a 1-inch curling iron (shown, Drybar The 3-Day Bender 1" Barrel Curling Iron), curl your hair from mid-shaft down, keeping the ends of your hair out of the iron. This gives it the undone beachy waves look. Make sure to keep the curling iron vertical to your head to get nice waves. Curl the rest of your hair by unpinning one section at a time.

5. Once the hair is curled, use a wide tooth comb (shown, Sephora Detangling Comb) to comb out your hair into loose waves.

6. Complete the look with René Furterer Vegetal Finishing Spray to smooth out any fly-aways, and then lightly all over to keep waves lasting all night long.

BeLissPro Curl Genius: Easy Answer to Curls?

Product Sent for Review Sponsored Post

BeLissPro Curl Genius Review

Have you tried out one of the automatic hair curlers? I borrowed one from a PR agency about a year ago, shortly after they were released in the US. My results were ok, though I think most of the issue was my long bob.

Now that my hair has grown out to a few inches below my shoulder, I have been itching to try out another automatic curler! My hope is that the curler will quickly and easily create perfect curls and waves for an easy look with day 2 (or day 3) hair.

BeLissPro Curl Genius Review

The BeLissPRO Curl Genius Professional Curl Machine is more affordable than many of the other curl machines, and you can get it at your local Sally Beauty! Plus, if you buy it in November it comes with this free leopard case!

It's relatively easy to use. First, you turn it on with the heat switch. You can pick one of two temperatures, 390F or 430F. The light will start blinking, and once the curler is completely heated up it and ready to use the light will stop blinking.

You'll also need to select the total time of curling, 8, 10 or 12 seconds. The longer you curl, the tighter and more spiral your curls will be.

The best way to pick your optimal settings is to just experiment. Definitely start with the lower heat setting and add a little extra time to your curl before you go up in temperature. If you can avoid the heat exposure to your hair, you should!

BeLissPro Curl Genius Review

To use the Curl Genius, you take a 1" section of hair, lay it across the barrel, and clamp down. Your hair will get sucked down into the barrel and you can hear the machine wrapping it around the barrel. There will be a beep every 2 seconds while hair curls, and then a rapid 4 beep sequence to let you know it is done! Unclamp your hair first and then pull away the machine. Your hair will come out easily, already curled!

The main issue I had with this machine was entirely my own fault, I tend to use too much hair at one time, which can get tangled in the machine. When this happens the machine will automatically stop and make a few frustrated sounding beeps. Simply unclamp and pull the machine away from your head. When I last used a curling machine, my hair would tangle up very easily in the machine and it was sometimes really hard to get out, I know I ripped out some hair! The Curl Genius releases any tangled hair much more easily, I never had to struggle with removing my hair.

BeLissPro Curl Genius Review

I've been using the Curl Genius this week to create an easy wavy style. You can see how long my hair is now in my before picture. The curls created with the Curl Genius are really very pretty, I purposefully leave them a bit looser. I did finger comb them a bit just to show what that looks like, but I admit that I prefer the curls left alone. I've found that when I use a little mousse in my hair, it gives me just enough hold that the curls will last for 2 days! My whole head takes under 10 minutes, something that I love.

I mentioned that this curling machine is available at Sally Beauty, and November is a great time to buy it! November is right in the middle of the holidays, a time when most of Sally's customers are getting ready for Thanksgiving or buying holiday gifts for their friends and family. There are over 40 gifts with purchase at Sally Beauty this month! It's the perfect time to treat yourself. My Curl Genius will be available in this pretty red with the leopard case instead of black, with no case. Definitely worth it!

Get the Look: Just Woke Up Waves at Houghton Bridal Fall/Winter 2015

This is not exactly the kind of look that you expect with a bridal show, but I loved how quick and simple this slightly messy style was. Obviously I wouldn't wear it while walking down the aisle, but it works great for every day life such as running errands and going out for casual meals! It was created by Oribe Lead Hairstylist Adam Markarian.

Oribe products for the wavy hair at the Houghton Bridal Fall/Winter 2015 show

What you'll need:
Oribe Foundation Mist
Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray
Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray
Large Barrel Curling Iron (shown: T3 BodyWaver 1.75" Professional Curling Iron)

How to do it:
Add texture and volume to your hair by spray Foundation Mist and then Maximista Thickening spray in to dry hair. Hit the hair with a burst from your blow dryer and rough everything up with your hands to add more volume and distribute the products.

Next, using a large barrel curling iron, add a few bends and waves in to the hair. You don't want to add curl, just a bit more wave to your natural texture. Try loosely wrapping the hair around the curling iron, without using the clamp, to get this affect. You should be concentrating on the mid-shaft of your hair, leaving the root and ends free.

Finally, set the hair and add a bit of matte finish by using the Dry Texturizing Spray throughout the hair and then spraying a light mist of Thick Dry Finishing Spray over the whole head.

Can Waves Stretch Your Hair For 2 More Days?

Can Waves Stretch Your Hair For 2 More Days?extending your shampoo with wavy hair

As I've been growing out this long bob, my hair has gotten heavy. Really heavy. Some of that is probably the pregnancy hormones, but I do need to add in a few layers and such. Combined with the tired/laziness of the end of my pregnancy, the result has mostly been boring ponytails.

I'm determined to step it up a little, and if stepping it up a bit means that I can also stretch a shampoo a few more days.... well that's just even better for after I have the baby! On Day 1 I can wear my hair just blown out. Day 2 is long and wavy (left above), and Day 3 is a big, voluminous pony.

Easy Wavy Hair

What I Used:
Ion Heat Protection Spray
Ion Styling Mousse
Gold 'N Hot Triple Barrel Waver
Ion Brilliance Shine Spray
Ion Dry Shampoo

1. Prep Your Hair
A really big part of this look is properly prepping your hair. This works best on second day hair (dirty hair always has more texture and "grab" for me), but I need to get a good base in place the day before when I wash.

I always, always, always use a good heat protectant on my hair after I wash it. Even if I'm just planning to let my hair air dry that day, there's a decent chance I'll be heat styling the next day. I'm not a fan of fried hair, been there, done that. The Ion Heat Protection Spray is one of my favorites because you can't even tell that it is in your hair! A few sprays throughout my hair are all I need, then I just comb it through.

Next, I like to use Ion Styling Mousse to help my hair hold on to the curls. I really believe that mousse is the secret to all day curls! If your hair won't hold a curl, you just need more mousse. I use a handful of the Ion mousse, roughly the size of a large egg. I distribute it from root to tip on my hair, and comb it through for even distribution.

That's where I stop for Day 1. My hair is straight, if I need to I might add a little of the shine spray, but my blowout is done for the day.

using a waving iron on your hair

2. Waving My Hair

For Day 2, I wave my hair. I usually add a little more of the heat protectant spray first (just brush it through the bottom half of the hair shaft). The waver is really great because it does all of the work for you! It has 2 settings, low (200) and high (380). While the waver does start to heat up and you can use it in about 60 seconds, it takes about 3-4 minutes to reach the actual temperature. So, I plug it in and go do other things while I wait.

When waving my hair, I start by sectioning off my hair. I like to make the sections diagonal rather than horizontal, the end result will be a bit more natural and uniform looking. You can see in the picture what the waver does when you open the clamp. You just put your hair in there and when it closes your hair will wrap around the barrels creating waves. I did also experiment with wrapping my hair around the barrels (both a single barrel and then as a figure 8 around the barrels) and it worked to create an even tighter wave, however these barrels are just 5/8". I think it would work better with the Gold 'N Hot Jumbo Ceramic Triple Barrel Waver.

When waving, I found that wide but skinny sections worked best. Fill up the width of the waver but don't have more than about 1/2" of hair between plates at a time. I counted to 10 and then released my hair, but this will vary depending upon the person.

wavy hair don't care!

You can see what my hair looks like down after waving it (ignore that 1 straight piece, I couldn't find it in my hair before or after the pictures, I think it's about 5 hairs that are just showing up!). A little spray of shine spray was all I needed, but some hair spray would also be great if your hair has a hard time holding on to hair.

Volumized wavy pony

3. Day 3 Ponytail

The next day my waves were still there, but not as well defined. I still had a ton of volume, which means that this pony is definitely a lot more volume and a bit edgier than my regular boring ponytail. If needed I could start this style with a little bit of dry shampoo, but it depends on the day.

I pull my hair up and just secure it with a regular ponytail holder. While holding on to the ponytail holder I can pull out a little of the hair on the top for extra volume and it really just stays put.

Styling Tools Blowout!

I tried out the Gold 'N Hot Triple Barrel Waver, and I have my eye on the Gold 'N Hot Jumbo Ceramic Triple Barrel Waver. There's a HUGE styling tool sale over at Sally Beauty this month! Over 100 styling tools are on sale at Sally Beauty for the whole month of October.

Toni&Guy Styling Products: Taking Them For a Spin!

Product Sent for Review Sponsored Post

Toni&Guy Styling Product Review

Do you remember back when Toni&Guy hit Walgreen's and I was completely obsessing over their Volume Whip? (If not, the post about why you need Toni&Guy Volume Plumping Whip is here.) I love that their products are super easy to buy now that they're in Walgreens! They offered to send me a few more styling products to try out (yes, please!), all of which you can buy at your local Walgreens.

Toni&Guy Glamour Volume Plumping Whip: This is the product that I previously reviewed, though I've gone through 2 tubs of it now, so I was pretty happy that they sent me another one! This is an amazing product for adding volume, even when you have a ton of hair like I do that gets weighed down easily. It has an interesting lotion-mousse feel, and it isn't at all sticky. It's most similar to a whipped body lotion/cream in consistency.

I use a grape sized amount, I just lightly distribute it throughout my roots before I dry my hair. Then I dry and style my hair as usual. The Whip does add a lot of volume, so you actually need to be careful when using this product! It's easy to end up with too much volume! I love that I get that volume without any teasing, it isn't sticky at all (I can't feel it in my dried hair) and it lasts all day.

Toni&Guy Classic Shine Gloss Serum: This is a pretty basic shine serum. It just works. I recommend applying just 1 pump at a time to your dry hair, it is pretty easy to overdo it. I have a bit more leeway if I apply to wet hair, I can do 2 pumps then. I avoid my roots since the shine can make my hair look a little greasy, but I start a few inches away from my roots and apply all the way down to the tips of my hair. It's very lightweight and once I've distributed it evenly you can't even feel that it is in there.

Toni&Guy Prep Heat Protection Mist: Heat protection is a must. have. Yes. Ever since I fried my hair a few summers ago, on the one day I forgot to use it, I've been a fanatic about heat protection. Even if I'm letting my hair air dry, I spray on a heat protectant. Why? Who is to say that I won't decide to do a 2nd day hair style that involves heat styling? Just in case, I always use a spray like this one on my wet hair. It's very lightweight, you can't feel it in your hair later, and it won't interfere with styling at all. I'm able to spray on a little extra before heat styling if I want, something that not all heat protectants can do without making your hair look a little... stringy. This one is invisible. Perfect!

Toni&Guy Casual Sea Salt Texturising Spray: I admit that I have a hard time with Salt Sprays. I think it is because I just have so much hair, that the effects are easily weighed down. Used alone, this salt spray just seems to add a little texture to my hair, so it is easier to keep my hair in a braid or a pony tail, but it definitely isn't enough to add a few waves. But when I combine it with the Spray Gel.... Yes! It's perfect.

Toni&Guy Casual Forming Spray Gel: The aforementioned spray gel. It's lightweight but has enough hold for my heavy hair, and it isn't sticky. I do combine it with the sea salt spray if I want to let my hair air dry into a few waves, but a few sprays when blowing my hair out straight offers just enough hold to help keep frizz at bay.

Tips and Tricks for Difficult to Style Hair

Tips and Tricks for Difficult to Style Hair

Jenny won her own post on 15 Minute Beauty post in my Summer Pedicure Kit collaboration with Sally Beauty. And it turned out that her hair question was one I know well!

I'm 44 and look young for my age, like early 30's, but due my hair being fine it goes flat so quickly I tend to just opt for a pony tail and while I can usually get away with it since I look younger, I also feel like I look like I am not trying.

Do you have any suggestions with regards to curling/styling medium, just below shoulder length hair? I find that if I use too low of a temperature it gives no curl, or if I crank up the heat it makes the curls a little too Shirley Temple-ish. Is there a happy medium technique, maybe teasing it to help to make the curl look more natural or polished with some volume?

Thanks!
Jenny

Oh, how I know your pain. My hair is still growing out from last summer's bob (I'm just below my shoulders now!), and I'm well into the "hard to style" length. As well, I have a ton of hair, but it is very fine and it tends to weigh itself down by mid-day. Over the years I've definitely found a few great ways to keep volume and curl in my hair. Here's a peek at what has worked best for me.

prepping hair for volume and hold

The first step is using the right products. I do change up what I put in my hair after washing depending upon how I'm planning to style it, but here's a look at how I tackle it.

If I'm planning on just blowing out my hair straight, I'll use product to help add a little volume and to heat protect from the dryer. Usually that means a few sprays of Root Volumizer on my roots (I spray in a few areas and then spread it around with just my fingers) and some Heat Protection Spray on the rest of my hair, which I comb through.

For days that I'm planning to go a bit more elaborate with my hair, whether that's putting it up somehow or curling it, I'll add a Styling Mousse. I use quite a bit of mousse, probably more than most people! I basically fill my entire palm with mousse, it's about 2 eggs worth. I've found that to get my hair to hold style, I really do need a lot of mousse, and it doesn't feel sticky or weigh it down. It just works.

Sometimes I just need to add a little texture to my hair to give it a little extra "grab". To do that I'll use either Dry Shampoo (on dry hair) or Sea Spray (on damp hair).

Ion Heat Protection Spray
Ion Volumizing Root Lift

Ion Summer Texturizing Sea Spray

Once I have product in my hair, I dry it. I use an ionic dryer to help avoid frizz, but it also seems to add a little extra oomph to my hair. I dry my hair about 90% of the way upside down, I only flip over to smooth it out a bit with a paddle brush. The upside down bit seems to make a big difference for me. Note that once I've smoothed the top layers of my hair with a brush, I'll usually flip myself over again, hit my roots with warm air and then switch to a blast of cool air to help "set" the volume.

Once I have my hair dry, there are a few styling options to pick from.

One of the best ways for me to add a little volume to my roots is with velcro rollers. I can't find the picture of the exact ones I use, but mine are linked below (a smaller size of mine is pictured). I bought the 8 biggest velcro rollers I could find on one of my Sally Beauty trips a few years ago, and while they make me feel like a 1950's housewife, they do help!

I use the rollers after I'm done drying my hair. I'll put a few in at the crown of my head, I usually don't do anything to secure them in place. I wrap them just to get the roots of my hair to I'll hit them with a blast of warm air from the blow dryer. I leave the curlers in place while I do my makeup, taking them out when my hair has cooled down.

teasing your hair for volume

I can't talk about adding volume to hair without discussing teasing. However, this is the option I'm least likely to take. I think it must be something about going through high school in the early 1990's, as a reaction to all of the big 1980's hair we never teased or used hair spray. So, I still don't tease my hair much.

I have 2 teasing brushes that I use, and the brushes really do work much better for my fine hair than a teasing comb. I've had the wooden brush longer, it was recommended on a fashion blog, and I basically stalked my local Sally Beauty until it came in stock. It has natural Boar and Porcupine bristles and really grabs on to my hair. For bigger areas I use the wider teasing brush from Ion, it just works faster.

If I want the added volume to stick around, I need to hit it with a little super hold hair spray before I move on to the next section.

Products Recommended:
Brush Strokes Wood Tease Brush
Ion Anti-Frizz Wide Tease Brush

The last option is getting your hair to hold curl. Of some sort. This is when I prep my hair with all of that mousse, add a little extra heat protection spray, and grab a curling iron or flat iron. I go for tools that are ceramic or titanium, the heat is spread more evenly, helping to protect my hair from damage. As well, I need many heat settings, with the ability to know just how hot I've made that flat iron.

Everyone's hair needs different levels of heat, so experiment to see what the lowest setting is that you can use. I started using about 410, I use 390 now. The lower heat will decrease your risk of frying your hair, something you want to avoid!

To decrease your chances of getting the Shirley Temple curls, I recommend using something other than a traditional curling iron. I love to curl using a flat iron or curling wand. Once you've removed the curl, if you either twirl the lock of hair a little or just cup it in your hand for about 30 seconds while it cools down you'll get a more natural looking curl.

I'm all about volume this summer (have you noticed that I'm constantly posting about volumizing products?) and TRESemmé has a great tutorial for creating more volume over on their tutorial page! They're offering 5 different tutorials (pumped up pony, a super sleek look, rock ‘n roll waves, full blown volume and shine like a star), with the idea that you're Amping Up Your Style. The looks are all super easy to recreate on your own, and when you watch the tutorials you'll get a coupon for $1.75 off TRESemmé at Walmart!

adding volume to your hair with Tresemme

I followed the Full Blown Volume Tutorial, which started with washing my hair with the Anti-Breakage Shampoo and Conditioner. These products are super hydrating and help correct damage. I think they're actually the key to this look, not the mousse! After washing, I used the mousse, roughly the size of a large egg, and distributed it throughout my hair. I concentrated mostly at the roots. I probably could have used more mousse, it isn't sticky at all and really helped volumize my hair.

My hair definitely have quite a bit more volume than it usually does, but it is super soft, shiny and silky! I can't stop touching it today!

When you head over to watch the tutorials, you can enter to win a chance to attend the 2015 VMAs for you and a friend! Simply fill out the sweeps form.

15 New Hair Products That Stylists Are Excited About!

I'm definitely a product junkie, and get really excited about new products. But what are the pros get excited about? Do they get just as excited about the same things? Today I thought I'd find out which new products professional hairstylists are excited about trying out.

Morgan Willhite, Creative Director at Ouidad
1. Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Cream Shampoo
"Ouidad has launched a new clarifying shampoo "Superfruit" which is a hydrating moisturizing clarifier. Superfruit is great for summer with the need to remove the buildup of chlorine from pools and salts from ocean which both can be drying on your locks.
Also when looking to do a conditioning treatment, start process with a cleaning, hydrated state.... First use Ouidad’s Superfruit to remove unwanted buildup to insure the best overall results when conditioning."

Regina Ventimiglia
2. RED by Kiss Handle-Less Hair Dryer
"I'm in love with my new RED by Kiss Handle-Less Hair Dryer. It's Ceramic and Tourmaline, Super Fast and Incredibly Light Weight. In the past, I've only purchased "Premium" Dryers and honestly ordered this only for my gym bag but it's now my go to!"

3. Metallic Hair-Tie Cuffs
The "hair wrapped" ponytail has been an easy summer favorite for a few seasons now but I'm liking the accessories for ponytail trends. I've picked up Leather Wraps and Metallic Hair-Tie Cuffs in Silver and Gold. Just make sure that you keep your look balanced and aim for polished...not cheesy!

Sean Henry is a stylist at Salon Evol in Stroudsburg, PA
4. Davines Oi All in One Milk
"Davines Oi All in One Milk has blown of my retail shelves and by far the best product I have ever held in my hand in almost 19 years. For the first time ever I can sell a product that works on many hair types, detangles, adds shine, gives body, protects the hair, and controls frizz. It has Provitamin B5 for its moisturizing action and Roucou oil that prevents the hair from aging and isa strong antioxidant. Is great to finally sell a client on product that does all, then to "load them up" with many different products that just drive up the final bill at the front desk."

Sherri Jessee is a hairstylist and makeup artist who owns Sherri’s Hair Salon, in Bristol, Virginia. She also writes for Latest-Hairstyles.com
5. Sam Villa Textur Iron
"The Sam Villa Textur Iron creates a micro crimp in the hair that literally doubles the thickness of the hair. Take small sections and press lightly to "beef up" the texture with only a small indication of "crimping." This can serve as a fabulous base for gorgeous up-dos."

6. Enzo Milano Estratto 3 Crimping Iron
"The Enzo Milano Estratto 3 Crimping Iron with the square plates creates texture that looks exactly like naturally super curly hair. It is a wonderful way to give someone with poker-straight hair the beautiful tight curls they've always dreamed of."

Bill Murphy is the founder of Recitals Hair Care
7. Pantene Pro-V Split Fix Instant Split End Repair Creme
"Pantene Pro V Split Fix is great for binding split ends and eliminates them over time."

8. Recitals Melody Moisture Miracle Crème
"Recitals Melody Moisture Miracle Crème is a fantastic multi-purpose product. It’s a wonderfully blended formula of natural and organic ingredients that is lightweight, acts as a leave-in conditioner, styling product that moisturizes while preserving hair color, preventing frizz and adding hold and shine."

9. Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray
"Oribe Apres Beach shine spray is a great product for pliability and shine."

Mika Fowler is a celebrity hairstylist at the Kim Vo Salon in Beverly Hills
10. Joico Texture Boost Dry Spray Wax 02
"Joico's Texture Boost is a dry spray wax that allows for the best product when it comes to creating the tousled beachy waves in the summer."

Andrea Dion Jacobs is a stylist at Orchid Salon in Wailea, HI
11. Croc Silicone Brushes
"The new happiness in my kit right now are my set of Croc brushes. Not only are they ceramic and tourmaline infuse barrel and heat resistant, the silicone strips in the brush barrel provide the perfect grip. Making styling brush curls, that are smooth and frizz free easy. The handles are long, but makes for a well balanced brush."

12. Brazilian Blow Out Split End Treatment
"If you have the kind of hair that never seems to grow or fine hair that splits easily. The treatment fills in and mends split ends protecting hair for 4 weeks. It is perfect for sealing a fresh hair cut or a great way to get extra mileage out of a cut that is a few weeks old. I found it does not weigh down finer hair nor does it straighten curls. It is an added 10 minutes to a blow dry service with no downtime, shampoo, swim, work out that day."

Julianne Bryce is a senior stylist at George the Salon in Chicago
13. Carrot Oil
"Carrot oil sounds like it's going to be the next new thing. Pick some up at your local whole foods. It is rich in carotene and antioxidants and can aid in hair growth."

Estelle Baumhauer is the Color Director at eSalon
14. eSalon Tinted Love
15. eSalon Color Kiss
"eSalon is launching a pigmented hair mask which will help clients maintain their hair color longer as well as improving the condition of hair. Also we've launched our Color Kiss Temporary Root Touch Up, which helps disguise roots quickly between color applications. Color Kiss is portable so can be carried in a purse or pocket."

Wavy and Undone Hair: My Solution For Too Much Sleek

Wavy and Undone Hair: My Solution For Too Much Sleek

This summer I've been all about big hair. I crave big, Connie Britton worthy hair, which is likely a reaction to my length, as I’m still growing out that long bob I cut on a whim last summer. That long bob is very easy to blow dry and look sleek and professional, but I've been craving wavy and undone!

This isn't a look that I do for work. Instead, this is a fun look for the weekend. It has a lot of volume and the waves and curls are imperfect on purpose. Everything I used in this look is affordable from Sally Beauty, even the flat iron. I'm so impressed with it that it is replacing my much more expensive model!

Wavy and Undone Hair: My Solution For Too Much Sleek

Sally Beauty Ion Heat Protection Spray
Sally Beauty Ion Styling Mousse
Sally Beauty Ion Mega Hold Freezing Spray
Sally Beauty Ion Titanium Platinum Gator Flat Iron 1"
Sally Beauty Meta Grip Premium Bob Pins
Sally Beauty Ion Anti-Frizz Wide Tease Brush
Colortrak Tools The Croc Clip

Wavy and Undone Hair: My Solution For Too Much Sleek

I start this look on dry hair and I think it would probably work best on second day hair. I prepped my hair with the Styling Mousse and Heat Protection Spray while it was still wet. The Mousse is just enough hold, isn't sticky and adds some nice volume. The Heat Protection Spray is a step I'll never skip after frying my hair 2 years ago. This one provides amazing protection but you can't feel it in your hair.

I section my hair off with the Croc Clips. I like that they're big enough to hold a lot of hair. Using the Ion Flat Iron, I curl my hair. Because I'm not looking for perfect curls, I just grab random small sections, start at the top of the shaft and turn the iron 180 degrees. Running the iron down your hair, you'll want a little tension on the edge of the iron that is facing the floor - that's where you'll really get a great curl! I want some curls, some waves and none of them should be perfect.

Wavy and Undone Hair: My Solution For Too Much Sleek

Once I've finished the entire lower layer I spray everything with the Finishing Spray. It has great hold, but still touchable. Now I take down the top section and repeat the curls up on the top of my head.

Wavy and Undone Hair: My Solution For Too Much Sleek

Once all of the sections are done, you can see that my hair is definitely voluminous and not perfect. I want a bit more volume at the crown, so I grab a large section and use the Wide Tease Brush and back comb a bit. I also use the Finishing Spray all over the top of my hair too.

Wavy and Undone Hair: My Solution For Too Much Sleek

Finally, I needed to pull back some of my hair, otherwise I wouldn't be able to see! I experimented with different sections, finally deciding that I liked the way just a small area pulled back looked the most. I used two Meta Grip Premium Bob Pins. I'm a bit of a bobby pin snob, and when I discovered these a few years ago I was amazed! They are very heavy duty and stay put all day!

The Best Blow Out Tips, Get Pro Results at Home!

The Best Blow Out Tips, Get Pro Results at Home!

Wouldn't it be great to always look like you just walked out of a salon? Try as we might, it can be really hard to recreate our hair stylist's results at home. There are some great little things that you can add to your routine or change up to get better results. I'm taking notes, and I think I need to get some new pillow cases...

Arturo Swayze from the Arturo Salon offers these tips:
• Washing your hair less frequently and using Klorane dry shampoo with Nettle will prolong your blowout.

• Tie your hair in a top-bun when you sleep and use a silk pillow case (here's an option at Cuddledown). Cotton pillow cases will roughen-up your hair causing your blowout to deform. Cotton will also cause the cuticles in your hair to get rough as well, making your hair look textured aka frizzy.

• One thing I see women do wrong with their blowout is their not getting the hair smooth enough. When your using a round brush make sure you go over the hair enough to get it silky. If you do it really well the first time it will prolong your blowout much longer.

• And always use a thermal protector like, René Furterer Lissea, Thermal Protecting spray. It locks moisture in, protects your hair from heat damage and has anti-humidity protection.

Regina Ventimiglia has 3 great tips, though you'll notice that one of them is familiar. (I need to buy new pillowcases!)
• Want to keep your style, keep your hands out of your hair! You'd be alarmed at how many times we run our fingers through our hair on an average basis.

• You have to set your style with a cool blast of air to really make it lock in. That's why nice dryers have those fancy little cool blast buttons :) And keep your bedroom cooler at night. If your body temp really rises as you sleep, you'll most likely "sweat out" your style.

• Invest in silk pillowcases!

Vikki Parman
• Remove as much moisture from hair before styling with heat.

Dominic Commisso, Commisso and Company:
• Practice at home. The thing people are doing wrong at home is rushing and not practicing enough. I had to practice blowdrying other people's hair and it took time and practice. You can't expect to get good at something you don't put at least a little bit of practice into.

• You can ask the salon to schedule a one on one class on home hair care and styling. We offer that to our clients with makeup, proper shampoo, conditioner, detangling and treatments. Proper styling product, proper hot tools, blowdrying, setting and finishing.

David Todd, David Frank Salon:
• Invest in a great brush, I like Spornette natural bristle brushes. They work great and they last a lifetime if you take care of them. Choose a lager one for a straighter flatter look, a smaller one for waves and volume. Avoid blow drying with a paddle brush, it puts no tension on the hair and provides you no ability to style your hair.

• Use a nozzle on your blow dryer. I see women everyday who have burnt the hair with the end of the dryer. The nozzle keeps the hot grate at the opening of the dryer from coming in contact with the hair. This one little thing makes a world of difference.

• Try a bit of aerosol dry shampoo at the roots once your hair is completely dry. Gives the hair tons of body and makes your blow out last.

• Spend some time on the ends for a polished look. Five minutes finishing up the ends and the top layer can make a so-so blowout look great.

Terrence Michael Renk, Global Artistic Director for ProRituals:
• In the salon I put a setting volumizer like ProRituals Volume and texture foam. Blow dry with my Marilyn Hot Flash brush and transfer on to purple velcro rollers. Plenty of lift, bounce and a hold that last all day and into your red carpet night.

Vernelle Murphy, Salon V:
• A very light or no conditioner at all on your scalp can help stretch your blowout. You can also sleep with a high loose bun to keep the ends from getting rough and tangled during the night. Make sure when blow-drying hair at home to use styling products for volume, smoothing and hold. Section the hair so that you are working with smaller sections at a time. Consult your hairstylist to make sure you are using the proper hair brush and styling tools.

Natalia Lahud, Salon Sora:
• Use products for your hair type recommended by your hair stylist & don't use styling tools on high heat. Always use your styling products on medium heat to benefit the longest last and prevent damage. Always ask your stylist what they are using on your hair and use the same products at home.
