Modern Chignon at Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2016

Modern Chignon at Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2016

Let's face it, buns are nothing new. This look was created by Odile Gilbert of Kérastase Paris for the Jason Wu Spring/Sumer 2016 runway, and the idea was a modern, sleek version of the Chignon with a wet-look finish. But what really caught my eye was all of the texture in the bun itself. And luckily, the look is pretty easy to recreate yourself!

Can You Pare Down Your Hair Routine This Summer?

Sponsored Post

Have you seen this video about women and their hair? This is the second “Sh*t Girls Say About Hair” video that Aussie has created with Graydon Sheppard, and I love it!

I'm a bit afraid to admit it, but in the past my life has revolved around my hair. I worried about keeping my hair looking good and I would avoid any activities that would "ruin" a good hair day. While I don't tote around a bag full of hair product everywhere, I've avoided swimming, working out, and I make sure I always have a comb and hair tie in my purse.

I've been trying to pare down my hair routine this summer. I've been simplifying my routine and have been ignoring my hair when deciding to do things. By going with the flow a little bit more, I've been able to enjoy time with my kids much more! Less time curling my hair perfectly means more time in the backyard playing. I even went swimming in the pool with them on a recent vacation, letting my hair just air dry afterwards when we went out for dinner. In the past I would require a full wash, dry and styling session after swimming. That's a full hour before heading out for dinner!

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle

I admit that it's a lot easier to skip most of my lengthy hair routine when I follow the advice of Aussie Celebrity Stylist Sarah Potempa (her YouTube videos are one of my secret obsessions) about starting with a healthy hair base. By keeping hair super healthy, my hair is much easier to manage!

Keeping my hair healthy and manageable is pretty easy. I get regular trims, avoid heat styling, and replace my regular conditioner with a deep conditioner a few times a week. I fully admit that these 3 deep conditioners live in my shower! Aussie's 3 Minute Miracle in Shine is my main go-to quick deep conditioner. It leaves my hair shiny and helps tame frizz, even when I air dry! But, when my hair is feeling a bit dry I'll reach for Moist. When the humidity is high and I'm fighting frizz, then the Smooth 3 Minute Miracle is my favorite. All three products are quick and easy to use! They get the job done without weighing down my hair.

Are you ready to start simplifying your hair routine?

Ode to Redken Guts 10: My Favorite Root Volumizer

Ode to Redken Guts 10: My Favorite Root Volumizer

I have an issue with my hair. I have too much of it. I know, I know... cry you a river, right? But it's true. I have a lot of very fine hair on my head, and it just gets heavy. So heavy that it weighs itself down easily, giving me flat hair on the top of my head, but with volume at the ends. Basically, triangle hair. It's not a flattering look.

To combat the lack of volume at my roots, I have a couple of tricks. My biggest trick is actually to get my hair thinned out when my stylist cuts my hair. She removes excess weight during my trims, and while my hair doesn't look any different at the bottom, it makes a huge difference when it comes to the amount of volume on top and how easy it is to style.

The second thing I do to help improve flat hair is root volumizer. I've tried a ton of them over the years, but I keep coming back to Redken's Guts 10. It's a spray on foam/mousse, and it is one of the few products that I've found to be strong enough to add volume on my roots and then to keep working all day long.

Using Guts 10 is pretty easy. When my hair is still wet, this is my last styling product. I just pull up some random sections of hair and spray Guts 10 from about 8-10 inches away, directing the stream at my roots. It looks just like mousse that has been distributed a bit. I do this to sections all over the top of my head, and when I'm happy with how much I've applied I run my fingers through my hair to help distribute the product. Then I dry and style my hair as usual.

The end result can be as subtle or strong as I want. A little Guts 10 will be just enough to keep my hair from flattening out after I blow dry it. I can't feel it in my hair, and the results last a day or two. A lot of Guts 10 can have a lot of hold, resulting in hair that has epic volume and yes, is definitely something I can feel in my hair! I usually am on the lighter end of the spectrum. A little extra oomph for a few days and hair that has a bit of volume and hold.

I've repurchased this product over and over, I've probably gone through about 20 cans. I have even repurchased travel sized cans, because I take it with me whenever I go out of town. It's definitely one of my favorite hair styling products!

You can buy Redken Guts 10 at ULTA, or Amazon.

Quick and Easy Top Knot For Summer

Product Sent for Review Sponsored Post

Easy Top Knot DIY

Now that summer is really and truly here, I've been looking for alternatives to my typical pony tail to keep cool. And that usually means a bun or top knot of some sort. I've been wearing this quick 3 step top knot updo quite a bit. Especially since my husband confessed how much he likes my hair up like this!

Easy Top Knot DIY
Easy Top Knot DIY

To create this look, I need to add some texture to my hair! I start by using Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion Shampoo and Conditioner. They keep my hair hydrated, which is great for preventing frizz, but add some much needed body and volume.

I also use the Suave Professionals Sea Mineral Infusion Texturizing Sea Salt Spray on my hair. I first spray the Texturizing Sea Salt Spray throughout my hair when it is wet, and then I roughly blow it dry with my head upside down. Once my hair is dry, I spray it on a few more times, rubbing it in just with my hands. It doesn't make my hair sticky or dirty feeling. Instead, it just makes it a bit less silky, now it can be held in place. This added texture makes a big difference in how easy it is to style my fine hair.

Easy Top Knot DIY

Once my hair has a little bit of texture, it's time to pull up my hair! I always had a hard time getting buns and pony tails to look cute, until I discovered the trick of pulling back the top of my hair first. I use a small butterfly clip because it is easy to remove later if I want, without disrupting the rest of the style too much. Here I've pulled back a small amount of hair at the top of my crown first, and then I'm pulling my hair up into a pony tail just behind the clip. Note that in this style I left the clip in place since you can't see it in my bun, but I remove the clip when I am just leaving my hair in a ponytail.

Easy Top Knot DIY

When pulling the hair up into the pony tail, you can see that I don't pull that last loop through the pony tail holder fully. Instead, I leave it as a loop. I've wrapped the end of my hair around the pony tail holder and tucked it in, but you could also just leave it loose.

Once my loop is in place, I flop the loop down on the top of my head and loosely pin it to my head. I limit myself to 5 bobby pins, simply because I hate feeling pins in my hair! It's fine to have a few stragglers, and the hair loops can be a bit loose. You can see that the loops actually look quite a bit fancier than they really are when the pop up a bit. Don't overthink it, just use your 5 pins to secure the hair down onto your head.

Easy Top Knot DIY

I've been wearing this look at home, out running errands and even to work! On the day I took these pictures, I went to my 4 year old's swimming lessons, and the style definitely kept me cool in the hot and humid indoor pool.

The Best Frizz Fighting Hair Products for Summer

The Best Frizz Fighting Hair Products for Summer

Today for Makeup Wars, we're tackling one of summer's biggest hair woes, frizz! No one wants to have super frizzy hair. It's something that some of us are more prone to than others, and I'm in the frizzy hair camp.

When my hair is frizzy, there are a few things that I do to de-frizz. The most important for me is hydrating my hair. My hair is always dry when it starts to frizz, regardless of how much humidity is out there. So, if you're fighting the frizz, be sure to use an intensive hydrating treatment!

The Best Frizz Fighting Hair Products for Summer

Hydrate

When my hair is dry and damaged, I definitely see an increase in frizz! I swap out my regular conditioner for a more intensive treatment, or if I really need to I'll even grab an overnight treatment. When I'm having issues with frizz, a hydrating issue is the first product I reach for!

A few of my favorite super intensive treatments:

1. Darshana (from Darshana): You can read my Darshana Hair Oil Review, but this hair oil is amazing! It is very versatile. You can use it in your hair about 30 minutes before a shower or even apply it all over at night. It really hydrates your hair without weighing it down.

2. Aussie 3 Minute Miracle (from Drugstore.com): This is a quick and easy swap out for regular conditioner. Plus, you can't beat the price!

3. Kerastase Nutrive Masque Oléo-Relax (from Kerastase): While I usually use the Chroma line from Kerastase (and I love both of those masques), I keep an "emergency" hair mask from the Nutrive line as well for when my hair is super dry and frizzy. To ensure that you get the most out of the mask, I towel dry my freshly shampooed hair first, apply the mask and put on a shower cap. I rinse it out after about 5-10 minutes. It can make anyone's hair silky soft!

Dry It Right

A few little tweaks in how you dry your hair can actually make a big difference in your level of frizz! When drying your hair, if you think your hair is dry, keep drying it for a few more minutes. Usually it isn't quite fully dry, and taking a few minutes to get rid of the last bit of moisture can really make a big difference when it comes to frizz.

4. DevaCurl DevaTowel (from Sephora): Instead of drying your hair with a regular towel, reach for microfiber (like this DevaTowel) or even just an old t-shirt. Don't rub, instead just squeeze and blot your hair. You'll rough up the cuticle of your hair less, so you'll have shinier hair with less frizz!

5. Sam Villa Professional Ionic Blow Dryer (from ULTA): This is just the dryer that I'm currently using, but the key is the ionic feature. It really does cut down on frizz! You'll find it at many price points, including the Conair Infiniti Pro Dryer (see my review, get it at ULTA) from $30, the Sephora Blast: Ceramic Ionic Blow Dryer ($80 at Sephora), all the way up to the $250 T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i Dryer (from Nordstrom).

Styling Products to Prevent Frizz

Finally, we get to the part that you really want to know. What products should you add in to your styling routine to fight frizz? There are a lot of great products out there, I'm including some of my faves here. I'm purposefully trying to hit every price point, but in reality, if there is Living Proof in the house, I will use that first. If I'm out, I reach for L'Oreal. Living Proof has ingredients you won't find elsewhere, and it just works a bit better for frizz fighting. L'Oreal works really, really well and I do like it (and its price tag) a lot. But, I'm a bigger Living Proof Fan.

While Hair Is Wet:
6. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment (my Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Styling Treatment Review, But it at Sephora): This product has anti-frizz and volumizing ingredients from Living Proof

7. L'Oreal Advanced Hairstyle BLOW DRY IT Thermal Smoother Cream (at ULTA): Similar to the Living Proof, this cream is great for smoothing and preventing frizz.

While Styling Dry Hair:
8. Living Proof No Frizz Humidity Shield (at Sephora): You can spray it on over your styled hair and it keeps any and all possible humidity away. And you can't feel it in your hair. Amazing!

9. Living Proof Flex Shaping Hairspray (at Sephora): This is the hairspray I use all summer long. It won't budge even in mid-July Michigan humidity, spray it over styled hair and smooth everything briefly with your brush or a comb and it will keep frizz away.

10. L'Oreal Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Weather Control Hairspray (at ULTA): The L'Oreal version of the Living Proof hairspray. Yes, it does work, it just isn't quite as touchable.

Great for Wet or Dry Hair:
11. L'Oreal Advanced Haircare Total Repair 5 Multi-Restorative Dry Oil (at Target): I like this on wet hair to smooth and prevent frizz, or on freshly styled hair to further finish the style.

12. Redken Diamond Oil (from ULTA): This is the most concentrated hair oil I've ever used. You only need a few drops (which means that bottle is enough for 2 lifetimes), and you need to use about half the amount on dry hair that you use on wet hair.

My Current Beauty Obsession: Bendy, Wavy, Crazy Hair!

Product Sent for Review I Bought It Myself Affiliate Links

Loose curls versus bend hair

Today for Makeup Wars we're sharing our current favorite product, but I have to admit that I don't have a current favorite that I'm reaching for over and over that really stood out. Instead, I'm obsessing with my hair. I want my hair to be curled or bent every day. Every day. On days that my hair is left straight because I just don't have time, I have to admit that I'm a bit disappointed with myself!

I've recently published two different tutorials on how I get the look, my Perfect Hair Bend tutorial and Perfect Loose Curls tutorial. I've been going back and forth between the two looks, and I have noticed that the curls are a little faster, last a bit better for 2nd day hair (I need to touch up the bends a bit more on day 2), and are more polished looking. But, sometimes a girl wants some bend instead of curls!

Products for perfectly tousled hair

Here are a few of my favorites for getting these looks:

T3 Twirl360 Curling Iron: Yes, it is expensive. It's 1 1/4", and when you hit the button and twist your wrist, the iron will automatically turn the direction you want it to turn. I think it is perfect for this look, but you could get it with any similarly sized curling iron (like the Hot Tools 1 1/4" iron). You can get it from Nordstrom, Sephora, Macy's or ULTA.

Kardashian Beauty 3 in 1 Ceramic Hairstyling Iron: It's a flat iron, an oval curling rod or both at the same time. The shape of the iron really is the key to getting just the right bend. It makes the look 100% fool proof, which is just what I need! You can find it at ULTA, Target or Sally Beauty Supply.

Salt Spray/Texturizer
For me, the real key to getting my hair to stay all day is a good salt spray. I've mentioned quite a few over the last few months, including in those tutorials, but really these are the two that I've been using with the best and most consistent results. Unfortunately, they're also the most expensive.

Kérastase Spray à Porter: This is perfect for my hair when it is damp. I spray throughout, then comb through. It's a bit too texturizing for my hair when it is dry. Get it at Birchbox or Kérastase.

Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray: Super lightweight, it also adds some great shine. I use this on day #2, spray a bit through dry hair and then touch up with the curling iron or Kardashian wand, then use one of the hair sprays to set. Get it at Birchbox, Neiman Marcus or Barney's.

Touchable Hold
I need to spray my hair after it has been curled/bent to keep the look all day. I've found that very few hair sprays actually work "right" with these looks. I want my hair to move and be very touchable. Everything else is too frozen of a look and won't work. Again, I haven't found a lower priced option that works really well for this look.

Kérastase Laque Dentelle: This is my favorite option for both looks. It just works. From Kérastase.

Redken Wind Blown 05: I'm still experimenting a bit with this spray. It isn't quite as touchable, but it is close and is at a lower price point than the Kérastase. It comes with a very strong spray, it is like a light wind in a can! You can buy it from ULTA.

The Perfect Bend Made Foolproof: Wavy Hair Tutorial With The Kardashians

Sponsored Post

The Perfect Bend in Hair

If you've been on Instagram or Pinterest in the last few years, chances are you've seen the perfect wavy hair. Yes, it's the perfect wavy hair that I've been lusting after. Back in January I had my hair cut for the first time in months, and I had layers cut that were "weightless" rather than more traditional. Meaning, they are there, but because I've had them thinned out quite a bit, you don't seen an obvious line. Perfect for postpartum hair loss I thought. And also for getting the look of those waves I've been really yearning for!

Since that hair cut I've perfected curling my hair with a curling iron to get a very pretty look, but it isn't that perfect wavy bend that I want. Yes, that's right, I don't really want a curl. I want a bend. And it is really hard to get the perfect bend, unless you're a celeb hair stylist.

I've found a way to get the look I've wanted, and it is because of the Kardashians. I know, I know. But those girls have some amazing hair! And they teamed up with Chi/Farouk to create their line, so you know they had some amazing help. And it turns out that this is basically foolproof.

Kardashian Hair Beauty Tutorial

To get the look, this is as much about hair prep with products as it is about using the right heat tool.

I used:
Kardashian Beauty Black Seed Dry Oil
Kardashian Beauty Take 2 Dry Shampoo
Kardashian Beauty 3-in-1 Ceramic Styling Iron
Kardashian Beauty Pure Glitz Hair Spray
Beyond The Zone Beach Head Surf Shake Sea Salt Texturizing Spray

I start with damp hair. I apply a bit of the Black Seed Dry Oil, which will smooth frizz and protect my hair from heat damage while styling. I also spray the Surf Shake Spray throughout. I've found that the added texture from a salt spray helps my hair to hold curl much longer. Then I dry my hair straight.

How to get perfect wavy hair with Kardashian Beauty

Once my hair is dry (left), you can see that my hair still is a bit frizzy at the ends. A big part of this look working is to have ends that are smoothed. So, I start using the 3 in 1 tool as a flat iron. I just grab random sections and am not very obsessive about it. I smooth the entire hair shaft on the upper layers of my hair, but just concentrate on the ends for the lower layers.

How to use the Kardashian 3 in 1 flat iron

After my hair has been flat ironed, it is time to start waving/bending! Though, I have to say that the flat iron part of this tool worked really quickly and my hair required less heat than usual (only 380 instead of 400).

Kardashian 3 in 1 styling tool

Here's where the secret is. The 3 in 1 tool has plates on the outside that heat up to work like a curling wand. Except that it isn't really a curling wand. It's oval, and there's a spot where the 2 sides meet without a heated plate. So, not all of your hair gets heated. The result is that instead of an even, perfect curl, you get a bend. A bend.

I section my hair using a clip (these Croc Clips are my favorite), and then start curling! I use randomly sized sections of hair, and wrap it around the outside of the 3 in 1. I sometimes curl toward my face (as seen in this look) and sometimes away from my face. The point is to have random waves/bends, and varying the size and direction helps a lot. I always curl away from my face right next to it, the results are prettier that way.

When wrapping my hair, I generally leave a few inches free at the roots, and I don't wrap the last inch or two of my hair. While the hair is touching the iron, I don't have it wrapped very tightly. I hold this curl for about 8 to 10 seconds before gently releasing. While I'm holding my hair onto the iron, I twist the iron slowly, just rotating it about 1/4 turn in either direction.

The result is a bit random, and while slightly curled, it really is the perfect wavy bend instead of an actual curl! To keep it in place all day I spray it with the hair spray and scrunch it up just a tiny bit as the spray is drying.

The perfect bend in tousled hair

One of my favorite things about this hairstyle is that it can last for a few days and easily survives even super windy days (check out this picture after I'd been out running errands in 30 mph winds). To revive this hair, a few drops of the hair oil are all that I need! I also add a bit of dry shampoo at my roots for second day hair, it takes care of any greasy areas and adds volume without looking powdery or white.

The perfect tousled hair

Perfect Loose Curls: T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron Review

Product Sent for Review

T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron

So, if you follow me over on Instagram, you may have noticed that I've posted a few really, really good hair days recently (here and here), and the pictures didn't do my hair justice. In person, my hair was on point. Seriously. Amazing. People stopped me to tell me my hair was amazing. That's pretty amazing.

The thing that made my hair so amazing both of those days was the new T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron. I've used twirling curling irons before (most notably the Sarah Potempa BeachWaver), and while I've loved the results enough that I overused it to the point of frying my hair (tip: never go without at least 2 heat protecting hair products. You're welcome.)

So, now that I know to never skip my heat protectant, since getting the T3 Twirl 360, I can't seem to stop using it. It's very easy to use, just plug it in and hold down the power button. There is variable heat control, you can tell the temperature by looking at the lights on the curling iron.

What's really unique about this curling iron is how it twirls. When you have your hair on the iron, you hit the button and slightly twist your wrist in the direction that you want the curling iron to twirl in. It stops twirling as soon as you release the button.

Here's a look at what this curling iron does to my hair.

T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron
First Use

T3 Twirl 360 Curling Iron
Still not sure why the camera made my hair so crazy light, but you can see the curls pretty well here!

Yes. I know. So. Pretty.

That's why I'm using it all the time. And yes, stocking up on more heat protectants.

For those of you that are wondering, what are the differences between the T3 and my BeachWaver?

1.) The T3 is a 1 1/4" barrel, instead of the 1" from the BeachWaver. The look is a bit looser, but definitely still curled. The tighter curls of the BeachWaver are great if I'm trying to get my hair to stay for a few days, but even that needs a bit of touch up. The T3 look works for 2 days, and I do a few fresh curls on the top layers of my hair to freshen it up, but I don't recurl all of it.

2.) The BeachWaver works by selecting the direction that you want the curling iron to twirl and hitting a button. The T3 has you hit a button and twist your wrist in the direction you want the curling iron to rotate. I think the learning curve is harder for the BeachWaver, it seemed to take me a while to figure out what direction I was going in if I put my hair in the curling iron a certain way. Just moving my wrist a bit is definitely easier!

2.) The BeachWaver is longer than a regular curling iron, and I love that feature. The T3 is a normal length. T3, I beg you to make this curling iron longer, that would make it perfect.

So, I have both now. And really, I will continue to use both (see #1 above). But I'm currently keeping the T3 out on my vanity because I'm using it every day. It is definitely worth it!

My Favorite Drugstore Heat Protectants for Hair

Product Sent for Review I Bought It Affiliate Links

Best Drugstore Heat Protectants

About 2 1/2 years ago, I made a big mistake. I curled my hair (with high heat) and skipped my heat protectant. I hadn't really noticed it doing anything before, it was put away in the drawer, I was too lazy to pull it out.

Yeah, pretty much that. I fried my hair. Literally. It felt like a brillo pad and made ugly crunchy noises. I've written quite a lot about my fried hair and how I fixed it (and it is all gone now, my long bob chop about 18 months ago took away the last bits of it).

As a result of that whole experience, I know have tried pretty much every heat protectant and hair mask out there. And I keep buying them and using them obsessively. Oh, you will never catch me without at least 2 or 3 heat protecting products on my hair at any given time, even if I'm just air drying my hair!

Today I'm sharing my favorite drugstore heat protectants for hair. I'll share my favorite salon brand heat protectants soon! I typically use a few of these products each time I wash my hair. A spray, a cream and a little bit of oil or serum on my hair when it is wet. I then reapply a bit of serum or oil usually after my hair is dry. I haven't fried my hair since the big mistake!

My Favorite Drugstore Heat Protectants for Hair

Sprays
L'Oreal Color Vibrancy Dual Protect Spray (at ULTA or Amazon): This is a great multi-use product! Shake well before use, it has 2 different consistencies in there. It adds some great shine and has UV filters to help protect hair color from the sun.

TresEmmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray (at ULTA): Very lightweight, I can't tell this one is in my hair. It really helps control frizz and adds shine as well.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Heat Defeat Protective Spray (at ULTA and Drugstore.com): Even more frizz prevention (it does a better job at the frizz fighting than the TresEmmé).

Not Your Mother's Beat the Heat Thermal Styling Spray (at ULTA, Drugstore.com and Amazon): This spray is lightweight and has UV Filters in addition to protecting your hair from heat.

L'Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Blow Dry It Quick Dry Primer Spray (from Target or ULTA): Yes, it really does dry your hair faster. It also protects from heat and is super lightweight. One of my new favorites, I love that it cuts about 2 minutes off of drying my hair.

Oil & Serum
Kardashian Beauty Black Seed Dry Oil (at ULTA or Sally Beauty): This is pretty heavy duty stuff so don't go crazy with it! I apply sparingly just to the mid-shaft and below on my hair.

L'Oreal Paris EverStyle Alcohol-Free Smooth & Shine Serum (at Amazon and Drugstore.com): This serum tames frizz, adds shine and helps really finish your look if you apply it after styling. Add some into your prep to help protect hair from heat damage as well.

Cream
L'Oreal Advanced Hairstyle Blow Dry It Thermal Smoother Cream (at Drugstore.com and ULTA): A little of this cream really helps my hair become much more manageable, defrizzes and protects my hair from damage.

What is your favorite heat protectant from the drugstore? I'm always looking for a new one!

The Best of Kerastase: Yes, It Is Worth It

Product Sent for Review I Bought It Myself Affiliate Links

The Best of Kerastase

I'm not sure how this happened, but over the last few years or so... I've become obsessed with one of the most expensive hair care brands out there. It started when I bought some shampoo and conditioner on Rue La La a few years ago. I noticed that with the shampoo and conditioner, my hair was easier to style. I actually got comments on Facebook pictures about my hair being shiny (completely ignoring the new baby in those pics), must have been some good hair! I had a tub of hair masque that I'd break out when really necessary. That little tub was babied for years, and it always gave me a week of good hair days. When I ran out, I was sad. I bought other salon brand products and they were good, and I enjoyed them. But there was always a bit of regret. They weren't Kerastase.

Suddenly, Kerastase started showing up on my doorstep (gasp!) I have no idea how that happened, but I had styling products! Mousse! Hair Spray! And best of all... a sea salt spray. The only one that has ever really worked well for my hair. When Kerastase started showing up semi-regularly on Rue La La, I started buying big bottles of shampoo and more masque. I repurchased products. I started stocking up in case I ran out. And I found myself saying no to testing other products.

So, my name is Christine... and I am a Kerastase addict. And these are my favorites!

1. Réflection Bain Chroma Riche (at Birchbox): This shampoo is the real secret to the good hair days. I've found that as long as I use this shampoo (a shine enhancing shampoo for color treated hair like mine), my hair is healthier, dries faster and styling is easier. When possible, I buy the very large, salon exclusive size from Rue La La.

2. Fondant Chroma Captive (at Birchbox): This lightweight conditioner is the "everyday" conditioner that I usually pair with the shampoo. It is hydrating without weighing down my hair.

3. Réflection Masque Chroma Riche (at Birchbox): The intensive mask that I was previously hoarding, I now use it about once a week. While I often just swap it out for my daily conditioner, it really does work better when I take a few extra minutes to towel dry my hair a bit after shampooing, then apply and rinse out after 10 minutes or so.

4. Spray Volumifique (at Kerastase): This spray adds shine, softens hair and can really help add a lot of volume! I don't use it often, but I like to reach for it when I know I'm styling my hair and want volume.

5. Nectar Thermique (at Birchbox): A light lotion that I'll use on damp hair when my hair is feeling dry. It add hydration, helps fight damage and protects from heat damage.

6. Ciment Thermique (at Birchbox): Let's face it, sometimes we all over do it with heat styling, and our hair suffers. When my hair is looking damaged and I need to head to the salon for a trim, I break out this lotion. It helps with the damaged areas, and helps to protect from further damage.

7. Spray À Porter (at Birchbox): The first sea salt spray to work for me, this is really the key product for when I curl my hair. I use about 8-10 sprays throughout my hair when it is wet. It gives my hair just the right amount of texture and holds the curls in place much longer.

8. Mousse Bouffante (Kerastase): If I want really big, Texas worthy hair with some hold, then this is the mousse I reach for. Don't overdo it, about the size of an egg is all that my hair can handle.

9. Laque Dentelle (at Kerastase): This is my current favorite hair spray! It has flexible hold but really does a great job of working all day long despite any humidity. I'm on my second can already.

A Perfect Hair Day: Thanks Living Proof!

Living Proof PhD Perfect Hair Day Styling Treatment

Everyone wants a perfect hair day. Well, I'll settle for a great one, or even just a good one! And we all know that Jennifer Aniston has more than her fair share of the perfect ones, and let's face it... being one of the owners of Living Proof is probably a big part of that.

I haven't written much about Living Proof on the blog (I don't do a lot of hair product reviews for some reason), but they're my go-to brand for frizz fighting products. Their first products were pretty revolutionary, and when they started releasing more great things, like volumizing products, I loved them just as much.

But, I had this issue. I didn't want to just smooth or add volume. I wanted to do both! Finally, Living Proof has combined their patented Healthy Hair Molecule (OFPMA) and our Volumizing Molecule (PBAE) into one treatment. The idea is that you'll get volume, smoothness and treatment (it reportedly makes your hair 4.5x stronger, reducing breakage by 78%).

So, does it work? It doesn't give me Texas sized hair, but it does add a bit of volume and prevents my hair from being weighed down. It makes my hair easier to dry straight, adds some shine and yes, it really does help my hair look better. It also helps protect from both heat and UV damage.

I've been using PhD with a cocktail of other hair styling products to curl my hair and maintain the style for 3 days. It really is key to the look, without it my hair just doesn't look as good!

I've already bought 2 more bottles of PhD. Yes, it's that good.

You can buy Living Proof PhD Styling Treatment at Living Proof or Sephora.

Chrissy Teigen's Bouncy Pony at the 2015 Golden Globes

Did you hear all about how great Chrissy Teigen looked at the Golden Globes too? Yes, it was everywhere. And really, she did look pretty great. He had a very pretty lacy blush dress on, but when paired with her wavy ponytail the look was pretty and approachable.

Chrissy's hair was done by Celebrity Hairstylist and International Creative Director for Macadamia Professional, Giannandrea. It was a modern, elegant take on the playful pony.

Get the Look:
• Apply Macadamia Professional Foaming Volumizer (at ULTA) on wet hair before blow drying the whole head with a large round brush, to create ample volume at the roots and length

• Use a 1-inch curling iron and curl the whole head in waves

• Once the hair was set in waves, use a generous dollop of Macadamia Professional Whipped Detailing Cream (at Folica) and run hands throughout the hair, using fingers to create supple separation and texture all the way through the ends

• Gather hair into a high pony tail, slightly below the crown. Tie the pony into an elastic band and take a small section of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic band covering it. Keep the pony playful by using your fingers to open it up and make it wide, textured and volumized

• Make sure it’s not too tight around the face by creating volume at the front with separation. Leave some fly aways on the sides for an effortless look

• Spray in place with Macadamia Control Working Spray (at ULTA) to protect against humidity and set for a night out

Get the Look: Kate Beckinsale's Up Do at the 2015 Golden Globes

As usual, Kate Beckinsale looked amazing at the Golden Globes. I'm convinced that she can do no wrong. Her skin is always glowing, her hair healthy and beautiful, yet she never seems to be over shadowed by any one element of her look, everything just works.

Kate's sleek and sophisticated, yet still approachable, updo was created by celebrity hairstylist Creighton Bowman of Tracey Mattingly.

"Our inspiration for the evening came from Kate's stunning Elie Saab gown and the idea of adding length to her silhouette by adding height to her hair," said Creighton.

Get the Look:
• First, on towel-dried hair, I applied René Furterer VOLUMEA volumizing foam (at Beauty.com) - no rinse at the roots and René Furterer FIORAVANTI shine enhancing no-rinse detangling spray (at Beauty.com) on the ends.

• Also, I sprayed on René Furterer LISSEA thermal protecting smoothing spray (at Beauty.com) to help protect the hair from my heat styling tools.

• Next, using a medium-sized round brush, I blew out the hair.

• Once Kate's blowout was finished, I curled the hair with a 1 1/4" curling iron and then set the hair into 1" sections.

• I then brushed out the curls and sprayed René Furterer NATURIA dry shampoo (at Beauty.com) all over for added texture and thickness.

• To begin the updo, I pulled all of the hair to the top of the crown and secured it with a ponytail holder.

• Once the ponytail was secure, I wrapped all of the hair around the ponytail base in a forward motion and secured it with pins in the front of the ponytail.

• Finally, I used René Furterer VEGETAL FINISHING SPRAY (at Beauty.com) to hold the look in place and to smooth any flyaways.

Rosamond Pike's Sleek Bob at the 2015 Golden Globes

Rosamond Pike's look was certainly a show stopper at the 2015 Golden Globes! Her dress was amazing with the side cutouts. To complement her dress, celeb hair stylist Kylee Rae Heath created a sleek look using Oscar Blandi products. "We were inspired by the ethereal gorgeous white dress and wanted the hair to be straight and sleek in contrast."

Get the Look:
• On damp hair apply Oscar Blandi Hair Lift Mousse (at ULTA) throughout the roots and spray Oscar Blandi Jasmine Protein Mist (at ULTA) from mid-shaft through the ends and comb through the hair.

• Create a deep, straight side part with a tail comb.

• With a small round brush blow dry hair on a low setting to work shine and volume into the hair.

• Once the hair is dry, spray Oscar Blandi Dry Heat Protect Spray (at ULTA) onto the hair & smooth out the ends with a flat iron. It is key to only hit the ends with the iron to maintain volume at the roots.

• Apply a small amount of Oscar Blandi Polish Glossing Creme (at ULTA) to the ends to polish and to smooth away any flyaways around the part.

Jessica Chastain's Long, Flowing Waves at the 2015 Golden Globes

Jessica Chastain has pretty amazing hair. I love how she always makes it a feature of her look, but she doesn't let it overwhelm her! For the 2015 Golden Globes her hair was loose and flowing, it reminds me of a laid-back Veronica Lake. It just looks very pretty and healthy.

Jessica's hair was done by Well Professionals Stylist Renato Campora. It's a great updated Old Hollywood look, the long and loose curls with a side twist.

Get the Look:
• They started with freshly washed hair (Wella Professionals Elements Renewing Shampoo and Daily Renewing Conditioner were used). To help hair hold the style, Wella Professionals Elastic Energy Mousse was applied to damp hair. Hair was then blown dry using a round brush.

• Using a 1.5 inch curling iron, curl only the bottom portion of hair to create voluminous curls. If your hair has a hard time holding curl, consider using a 1" iron instead.

• Apply Wella Professional LuxeOil Light Oil Keratin Protection Spray to the top of the head to smooth any fly-aways.

• Allow hair to cool for 5 minutes then lightly brush through the curls to create a loose look.

• Apply a small amount of Wella Professionals Smooth Brilliance Shine Pomade to fingertips and smooth down the front of the hair for a sleek shiny look.

• Finish the look using Wella Professionals Stay Essential Finishing Spray.

Sienna Miller's Perfect Wavy Bob at the 2015 Golden Globes

Sienna's hair was wavy bob perfection! Just look at it!

Redken/Cutler Stylist Jenny Balding didn't style Sienna's hair, but she knew how to recreate the look. She says, "Sienna's hair is a fantastic version of a short bob – it's perfectly disheveled and textured haircut."

If you're looking for Sienna's style, start with your hair cut into a mid-length bob to allow movement (if it's cut too short it won't have enough versatility).

To get Sienna's perfect waves:
Start by blow drying with volume throughout, using a medium sized curling iron to create a bend from the mid-length to the ends of the hair.

Finish by using Redken fashion waves 07 sea salt spray to create the perfectly disheveled edge. Mist all over whilst running your hands throughout.

Update
I'm already posting updates! After I published this post this morning, I got an email from Suave (yes, Suave!) with info on how the look was really created on Sienna. Sienna's perfect wavy bob was created by Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist Jenny Cho.

According to Jenny, “I wanted to create a beautiful, side-swept, textured look on Sienna to play against her stunning beaded dress and to keep everything fresh and effortless. “

Get the Look:
• Begin by making a deep side part on towel dried-hair and mist Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Volumizing Weightless Blow Dry Spray all over. Blow dry hair with a paddle brush.

• Then create loose waves by using a medium size curling iron on small sections of hair, and repeating this throughout the entire head.

• Apply Suave Professionals Refresh & Revive Dry Shampoo and shake out the hair for movement, and to break up the waves so it looks natural.

• Spray hair from mid-shaft to ends with Suave Professionals Natural Infusion Moisturizing Oil Spray to add a little shine back into the hair, and then lock in the look with Suave Professionals Luxe Style Infusion Volumizing Plump Hold Hairspray.

Simple Spanish Inspired Updo: Redken at Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2015

Simple Spanish Inspired Updo: Redken at Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2015

Yes, it does look a bit Spanish-Flamenco dancer (well, that was the inspiration!), but this updo that Guido, Redken Creative Consultant, created for the Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2015 Runway was very soft and feminine and I think could easily be adapted for a holiday party, a night out, or some other special occasion. It is special without being too fussy, it really looks just very effortless to me!

“This look is very classically Dolce. It’s very soft, pretty and feminine – how girls want to look," said Guido. "It could look severe, but I’m doing it with my fingers to make it much softer for an overall feeling that’s very rich and luxurious.”

What You'll Need:

Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer
Satinwear 02 Prepping Blow-Dry Lotion
Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray
U-Pins

Create the Look:

1. Prep hair for blow drying. Mist damp hair with Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer, comb through. Next apply a nickel-sized amount of Satinwear 02 Prepping Blow-Dry Lotion, comb through. Blow dry hair smooth using a round brush.

2. Part hair in the center and spray Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray for a little added texture.

3. Using fingers, pull hair over the fingers and back into a messy knot. Secure with small U-pins. Leave a few bits of hair sticking out from the bun to achieve a softer look.

4. Finish with another mist of Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray.

Optional: Add a flower! You'll want to opt for a hardy variety so it lasts for the entire night. A carnation or calla lily would be a great choice (I found this great resource for hardy flowers to wear in your hair). Secure the flower into your hair with bobby pins or consider using a silk flower hair pin instead.

The Perfect Half Up-Do: Redken for Valentino Spring 2015

The Perfect Half Up-Do: Redken for Valentino Spring 2015

For the Valentino Spring 2015 runway, Redken Creative Consultant Guido created a soft beachy half-up hairdo that I love! It has texture and waves, isn't boring and looks like it would work for a lot of different occasions. That is, if you skip the shell adornments!

“Valentino has a way of conjuring up what women want and this look is about this girl in the sun and in the sea, emphasizing the femininity of the classic Valentino girl," says Guido. "I used fashion waves 07 to create the waves and then used an iron to add additional movement."

What You'll Need:

Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer
Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray
Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray
Blow Dryer
1 Inch Curling Iron

How To Get The Look:

1. Mist Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Primer throughout damp hair, followed by Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray. Using your fingers, create a center part and then blow dry the hair. While drying hair, twist section by section to create waves and movement.

2. Touch up curls in irregular sections using a 1 inch curling iron.

3. Loosen the curls with fingers and spray hair once again with Fashion Waves 07 Sea Salt Spray for texture. Add Wind Blown 05 Dry Finishing Spray for hold.

4. The half up look here was created by taking a gold headband and applying it to the back of the head, wrapping hair around the headband and allowing the shell adornments to hide the band. As an alternative, take hair from both sides of the head and lightly wrap it around itself, securing in the back of the head with bobby pins.

DIY: At Home Volumized Blowout with Conair

Product Sent for Review Sponsored Post

at home blow out for extra volume

I've been asked by quite a few readers about my hair drying process. How do I dry my hair? What products do I use? How long does it take? I have a lot of hair on my head, especially now that I'm almost done growing out my long bob. I dry my hair for speed, to avoid frizz, and to add in volume that my heavy hair will otherwise weigh down.

I can tell you that my hair drying is an ever evolving process, and it rarely is the same one week to the next. I swap out products depending upon how I'll be wearing my hair that day (or even in the next few days), and it will change depending on the time of year. But, the process itself isn't too different!

hair products for an at home blowout

First, let's talk about the products that I use. I always add products one at a time to my damp hair, combing my hair in between applications. While I change out the products I'm using each day, I usually have 2 or 3 products (at least) in my hair, and several of them will offer heat protection. Always heat protect your hair! Having fried my hair once, I will never do it again!

Leave In Conditioner
Because I color my hair and heat style it, I pay a lot of attention to the condition of my hair. If it is getting dry at all or my ends are starting to split, I will use hair masks in the shower and usually add a leave-in conditioner to my drying routine. I apply the leave-in to my hair mid-shaft to the ends, and it is always the first product applied.

Mousse
If I'm planning on curling my hair at any point in the next 3 days, I'll add mousse. My hair is very slightly wavy, but without mousse and/or high heat, I have a very hard time holding a curl in my hair. I need about the size of a large egg, and I apply mousse from the roots where it will help hold volume, down to the tips where it helps hold curls.

Cream
Because of that slight wave I mentioned in my hair, I usually add a straightening cream in to my hair as well. While I can skip this product if I feel like I've already added too much into my hair, the truth is that a cream of some sort will make my hair straighter, softer and I'll have less frizz.

Oil
Oh oil... how did we live without you? I really love a good hair oil, and I'm not a girl that is picky about my silicones. I tend to add oil in to my hair for drying just during the winter to help keep down frizz from the dry air. I always add a few drops at the end of styling as well. Mid-shaft and below, too close to the roots makes my hair look greasy.

At Home Volumized Blowout

Drying my hair:
Once I have all of product in place, it is time to start drying! Since I'm after volume, I always dry my hair upside down. This helps to train the roots to go straight up, drying standing up makes my hair much flatter!

When I'm first drying, this is a very rough blow dry. I don't even have a brush, I'm just moving the dryer all around and trying to hit all of my roots and somewhat my hair down to the mid-shaft. I move my hair around with my fingers just to help the process.

I've found that the ends of my hair get hit enough by the dryer that I don't need to worry too much about them until my hair is about 80-90% dry, when I'll break out a brush. Now I'll tip my head a bit to the side and will go through my hair all the way to the ends with the brush to help smooth everything out.

I only stand back up when my hair is completely dry! First, I do a cool shot all over my head while still upside down. Then I'll stand back up and part my hair, looking to see if I need to do any smoothing. I usually have smooth hair and can just call it quits. However, if my hair needs any smoothing, I'll use my brush and just do the very top layer of my hair, trying to stay away from my roots. I want my volume to stay put!

Conair Infiniti Pro 3Q Brushless Motor hair blow dryer review

The dryer I'm currently using is the Conair Infiniti Pro 3Q Brushless Motor dryer. It's brand new, and I'm kind of in love! Why?

First, this thing is pretty fast. I mentioned my crazy amount of hair. It's no joke, I have about 4 heads worth of hair on my head. I need a pretty powerful blow dryer to dry it in under 15 minutes, and even then there is usually quite a bit of heat involved. This dryer gets the job down in about 12 minutes with less heat. It's nice not to be sweating like crazy while I dry my hair!

Second, it's very quiet for a blow dryer. Yes, it's still a blow dryer, but it really is much quieter than other dryers that I've used. I've cut her out of the pictures, but up above where I'm drying my hair? There's a sleeping 6 week old in a bouncy seat just out of the frame. Yes, a sleeping baby was present for those pictures.

Third, it's a Conair. I always come back to Conair for my blow dryers, they last a lot longer for me than other brands, and they're at a much lower price point. This particular dryer is brushless (more info on why brushless motors are cool), which is something typically found in much more expensive dryers, easily 4-5x the cost of this one. It uses magnets and electronics to power the motor, which results in much less wear. It should have a much longer life than other blow dryers!

How do you dry your hair? Do you have any tips for adding volume that I've missed?

Infiniti Pro by Conair 3Q is the world’s first hair dryer featuring a brushless motor available at mass retail. The dryer’s name is derived from three of its key benefits, all of which begin with the letter “Q:” quick, quiet, quality.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Conair. The opinions and text are all mine.
