It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Essentials Shadow Palette: Review, Swatches and Quick Look TutorialIt Cosmetics Naturally Pretty Essentials Shadow Palette: Review, Swatches and Quick Look Tutorial

So, I'm not usually a matte eye shadow girl. I always think it is just kind of... boring. I want a little shimmer. Not a lot, but a little. Something to catch a little light. I usually use some satin and shimmer shadow in every eye look.

And then I read on someone's blog (or maybe it was a YouTube video? I think that was more likely) that some makeup artist claimed any shimmer on the lids was tacky. Tacky. WHAT?? I argue that's wrong. I certainly don't bling myself out like a disco ball on the regular.

But this stuck with me. So, I started to break out a few matte shadows that I had at home. They were, as expected, a bit... blah. Boring.

Then It Cosmetics (one of my favorite brands, I truly believe they can do no wrong), sent me an unexpected box. And inside was this cute little palette of essential shadows. And they say they are pretty! It's there, in the name! And if things are too matte for me, then I can always add a little of their transforming pearl shadow.

So, did this cute little palette change my mind about matte shadows?

My Newest Makeup Remover Obsession: IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup

Product Sent for Review

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup Remover Review

I'm one of those girls that loves to use new makeup removers. I have about 4 different eye makeup removers on my counter right now. I'm not even exaggerating. It is one of those things that I just love to try a new one each time, and I very rarely buy these products more than once. They need to really WOW me for a repurchase, and that happens maybe every 3-4 years.

Recently IT Cosmetics sent me their new Bye Bye Makeup, and I have to tell you that I'm not only planning to repurchase, but I'll likely be hoarding large quantities of this cleanser in my bathroom!

QVC Today's Special Value: It Cosmetics 4 Piece Customer Favorites

In case you haven't noticed, I'm a pretty big fan of all things It Cosmetics (here's a peek at my favorite products from It Cosmetics, though I should update that list to include a few additional items). You can pick up It Cosmetics at ULTA, or from the It Cosmetics website.

But one of my favorite ways to try out their products, usually at a great discount, is over on QVC! It Cosmetics is featured at the Today's Special Value every few months, and the collections are always a steal (and usually they include a new product or two!)

The worldwide launch of the latest set will only be available for 24 hours as a TSV, starting at 12:01 AM EST on Monday, June 8th. So, in a few hours. Get ready to shop! They haven't announced the price in press materials, but it will be under $60, and it is an incredible deal because the products are worth over $150.

QVC Today's Special Value: It Cosmetics 4 Piece Customer Favorites

The products included in this kit aren't flashy, but they're some of It Cosmetics' best products!

Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer: You can take a peek at my original Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer Review, but this concealer has been featured on the blog so many times that I've lost count. It's also featured in my Favorite Concealers post. This is a very, very pigmented concealer that has been formulated to be crease resistant (though it will crease if you add enough layers. No one should need that many layers). I like to apply a little to the back of my hand to warm it up, then tap it over the area that needs to be concealed.

Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection Brush: This is an amazing brush! I have 2 of them already and I was pretty happy to have a 3rd. I have 1 in my office (yes, I sometimes apply makeup in there for blog pics), 1 in my bathroom and this one will be kept in my travel kit. One end is a smallish domed brush that is perfect for foundation or blending of face products. The other end is small enough to help apply concealer around your nose and under the eyes.

And a few new products (which are slight variations on previous favorites)
Naturally Pretty Face Palette: This palette is perfect for keeping some great face products you need in one place. Included in this palette are Hello Light Creme highlighter, Vitality Matte Bronzer, Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder and Bye Bye Pores Pressed Blush (new in this palette). It's great for taking with you or just streamlining your makeup application in the morning!

Celebration Foundation SPF50: This foundation is a medium coverage powder, and I've heard about it's amazingness from my friends for years. I do think it is easy to apply, and you can use it as a powder or a foundation. The compact comes with a sponge in the storage area, that will give you a fuller coverage than if you buff on some of the powder with the brush. This formulation is new because it now includes sunscreen, an SPF 50! I wouldn't count on this to be your only sunscreen, chances are you aren't applying enough product to your entire face. However, it's a great "bonus" SPF for the summer!

Beauty Blogger Empties: Loving These Things and Repurchasing Them

Product Sent for Review I Bought It Myself Affiliate Links

favorite beauty blogger products

I've been talking lately about a lot of my beauty blogger friends, and we all agreed that over the past few years, we've been cutting down on the continual product testing. Don't get me wrong, I still use a lot of new products, but I'm allowing myself longer to test them. I'm spending a lot more time with my favorite "in between" products. And while those favorites do evolve a bit over time, I'm doing a lot more repurchasing of products, and I actually have empties! I'm using products up! This was unheard of a few years ago.

So, in honor of all those discussions lately, here's a look at all of the products I've finished and am repurchasing. I'm spending my own money on all of these, despite the offers for similar (free) products. I'd rather use this salt spray than any other. I want my own eye cream, thanks!

1. iS Clinical Youth Eye Complex (at DermStore or SkinStore): This eye cream was mentioned in my Best Eye Creams from Dermatologists post, and somehow has not had it's own post though I've mentioned it a few times! It has vitamins C, E, Retinol, tons of hydration, peptides to increase collagen and it also fights dark circles. I definitely think it makes me look more awake because my concealer looks so much better over it. It is pricey, but the bottle lasted me 6 months! In my shopping cart now. (Not pregnancy safe)

2. It Cosmetics CC+ Illumination Cream (at It Cosmetics or ULTA): This is the newest CC Cream from It, they also have a more traditional (not illuminating) version. They've sent me both kinds, in various shades. Because it is a pretty full coverage product, you do need a pretty good color match. Unfortunately for me, I'm darker than the Fair shade, but much lighter than Light. So, I've bought tubes of both (depending upon what was sent to me) and I've been mixing my own. For my perfect match I need about 75% fair, 25% light. It is hydrating but not overly so for my combination skin, and I love that it is medium to full coverage with almost no blending. I'm going to continue buying 2 tubes all summer long so I can have the perfect match! (Not pregnancy safe)

3. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment (at Sephora or Nordstrom, my Living Proof PhD review): This styling cream is in my hair pretty much every day now. I've already gone through 2 bottles! It is the only Living Proof product that combines their anti-frizz ingredient with the volumizing product, and it does a great job of protecting my hair from heat damage as well.

4. Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash (at Sephora and Macy's): I have a big bottle of this in my shower and another next to my sink. I used to reserve this amazing face wash for when I travel (I would hoard bottles of it from hotels), but now I just use it pretty much every day. I do rotate in other products on occasion (like the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser), but this one is my current favorite.

5. Revitalash Advanced Lash Conditioner (from Revitalash, Nordstrom or Drugstore.com): I pre-purchased 4 of these during the summer Nordie's Anniversary Sale, so they were quite the deal! It makes my lashes so long that I have to be careful with my glasses. Yes. I will not test other lash conditioners. (Not pregnancy safe)

6. Garnier Clean + Nourishing Cleansing Oil (at Drugstore.com or ULTA): I mentioned this on Monday in my Favorite Eye Makeup Removers post, I think I'm on my 4th or 5th bottle of this cleanser already. It's meant to be used just as a facial cleanser, but I use it with a cotton round to easily remove all of my eye makeup. It does leave an oily mess behind, I clean that up with the Bliss Face Wash.

7. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (at Too Faced or Sephora): I've lost track of how many tubes of this stuff I've gone through!

8. Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Precision Glide Eyeliner (at Elizabeth Arden) and the Beautiful Color Smoky Eyes Pencil (at Elizabeth Arden): These are currently my 2 go-to eye liner pencils. They're well pigmented, smudge just right into my lash line and won't budge all day.

9. Kerastase Spray à Porter (at Kerastase or Birchbox): This is my go-to salt spray. Others are ok, but this one just really works for me. It adds just enough texture that my hair holds styles and it doesn't feel sticky! How did I live without this??

10. Kerastase Bain Chroma Riche Shampoo & Masque Chroma Riche (at Kerastase): Their shampoo and conditioner for color treated, dry or damaged hair. I've discovered that it really is worth it, and if you watch carefully these products come up on Rue La La about every 6-8 weeks, so you should never have to pay full price! I've found that for some reason the shampoo is really the key to a great hair day for me, I use it every other shampoo (I still get those good hair days!). I buy the big, salon size, and I use the super intense hair mask (the regular conditioner is now not so helpful... I go with the masque!)

What have you used up recently? I had a lot of empties this month. So, I'm currently filling shopping carts all over the web!

I feel the need to explain this disclosure a bit more. A few of these items were originally sent by PR, like the Revitalash (which was sent years ago, but I've repurchased so many times that I've lost count), the Kerastase spray was sent, the Living Proof and It Cosmetics sent me the CC+ Cream but I don't actually match any of it so I mix 2 together (and I like it so much that I've repurchased 2 colors a few times). So yes, stuff was sent, but I've been spending my own money!

Get the Look: Elizabeth from The White Queen

Nothing to Disclose

Starz The White Queen

Have you seen the new television mini-series, The White Queen? It started airing on August 10th here in the US, though it's already almost completed in the UK. As usual, this amazing series was created by the people over at the BBC. It's based on the books by Philippa Gregory, mostly The White Queen, but also The Red Queen and The Kingmaker's Daughter.

I watched Episode 1 this weekend on my DVR, counted down the hours until episode 2 aired (it was less than 6 but I was not very patient) and now I'm debating about buying the DVD series from Amazon and probably all three books. I can tell you that watching Rebecca Ferguson play Elizabeth is definitely making the wait for the next season of Downton Abbey a bit easier!

Get the Look of Rebecca Ferguson in The White Queen on the BBC and Starz

One of the reasons that the series is so enjoyable is definitely watching Rebecca Ferguson. To say that she's beautiful seems to be an understatement. She's wearing very little makeup in the series, but what she does have seems to only emphasize her amazing skin and features. Not to mention her hair.... it really makes me regret my recent Bob (which I'm still getting used to), and wishing for about 3 feet of very voluminous extensions. It's almost enough to make a girl give up her giant makeup stash and recreate Rebecca's look every day.

I'll definitely be trying to emulate this no makeup but natural look on a few of my "down" days, here's what I think would work best to do it.

The hair on The White Queen
I couldn't find any images of Rebecca's hair at the beginning of episode one, but she has very long blonde hair with a bit of strawberry tint. Her hair is pulled back off of her face with small braids, and then tied (with what appears to be cords the same color as her hair, here I have 2 different Faux Leather Suede Necklace Cords, I'd use something similar in a color that blends in to your hair).

I'd recommend starting with Redken's Guts 10 to help add texture, volume and to hold the style. It's a spray that comes out as a white foam. I love it on my roots to add a little volume without teasing. Add it to wet hair, comb through and then blow dry. You need volume and texture, so don't worry about making things perfect here!

Once the hair is dry, it is crimped (yes, with a 1980's crimper) to add extra texture and volume (in case you didn't save your crimper from 30 years ago, they're selling them again! Bed Head Crimper). Once you have enough volume and texture, it's really a matter of playing around with how you want to pull back your hair. Add in small braids, twist sections, just make sure you have some volume and it falls nicely around your face.

Makeup from The White Queen

Elizabeth's beauty is a real feature in the series, and they've tried to keep it fairly natural. Rebecca has amazing skin with freckles, and I love that they are really show cased. She is fair but her skin is a little bit sunkissed, to recreate this look I would use a light concealer like Maybelline's DreamLumi Touch, which has a bit of light diffusion in it as well. To get a light sunkissed look without looking powdery, try Stila's One Step Bronze, concentrating on places that the sun would hit you like your cheek bones, forehead, chin and nose.

Elizabeth has a very pretty flush, I would try a cream blush like Maybelline Bouncy Blush (Peach Satin) or Stila Convertible color (in Gerbera). Try to stay in the pinky-peach family, and concentrate the color on the apples of your cheeks. Pair it with a similar tone on your lips, a lip stain like Stila Yumberry Crush Lip and Cheek Stain would be a good match.

There was minimal makeup on Rebecca's eyes, but when she did have on shadow it appeared to be a very light wash of a matte light grey or a light brown-taupe. Try Maybelline Color Tattoo in Tough as Taupe, Stila Smudge Pot in Gray or NARS Soft Touch Pencil in Goddess.

When she had on mascara it was on uncurled lashes, dark brown rather than black, and not a clump was in sight! I'd try CoverGirl's Clump Crusher mascara, which is formulated differently than other mascaras and has a specific distance between bristles to help prevent clumping.

Finally, a slightly defined eye brow was key to the look. I'd go for IT Cosmetics Your Brows But Better Brow Power Skinny Pencil, which has a slightly ashy tone and works with almost all hair colors.

Have you seen The White Queen? Am I the only one obsessing over this mini-series?

By Request: How I Groom My Eye Brows

How to groom your brows
Strangely enough, I've been getting comments and questions recently on a feature that I've always felt was a bit of a problem for me. It's true, I have bushy, crazy and unruly eyebrows. They grow like weeds and need constant upkeep. And, I definitely can't do it alone (yes, I get professional help!), but I do a lot on my own in between those visits.

Lately those eye brows have gotten comments in posts, on Facebook, DMs on Twitter and even emails. How do I get them to look that way? What are my brow secrets? Which products are my favorite? Here's a quick peek at my current eye brow maintenance!

The Best Eyebrow Products
I know that there are probably some girls out there that have tried as many eyebrow products as I have, but really, I have tried a lot. After much trial and error, these are my favorite tools/products!

Anastasia Precision Tweezers: I've tried pretty much every other tweezer out there (I have about 10 Tweezermans alone), but I always come back to these ones by Anastasia.

Tweezerman Scissors: My favorite little scissors

IT Cosmetics Brow Power: I used to use a similar pencil from Anastasia, but this one is a little better color for me and seems to last longer. I like automatic pencils with a very small lead so I don't need to do any sharpening. Powder also seems to make my bushy brows very overpowering, so I avoid using powder.

Anastasia Dual Duality Highlighter: I have separate pencils for matte and shimmer, but this one combines both into 1 pencil.

Anastasia Clear Brow Gel: Wax doesn't seem to work with my brows, so if things are particularly unruly I'll add a little of this at the end. It is much better than regular clear mascara, this actually holds and doesn't flake off!

Revitalash: I've added a little of this in the past to any bald spots. It does work very quickly!

Boom Boom Brow Job: I just started using this on those same bald spots about a week ago and it seems to be helping! It's easier to apply than the Revitalash because it has a felt tipped applicator rather than a brush. I'll update and let everyone know if it is my new product of choice!

Perfect Eyebrow Ratio
I first learned this years and years ago, most likely from Allure Magazine. You can read about it over on the Anastasia site, but there are guidelines for where you eye brow should start, how long it should be and where your arch should arch. Clean up stragglers below by waxing/threading/tweezing, and you can do the same above but err on the side of leaving hairs on the top. The top of your brow should pretty much be left alone.

It can be surprisingly difficult to follow the correct landmarks, and I'm pretty good at doing basic cleanup, but I need help to keep the shape on course. About every 3-5 weeks (really, it depends a lot on my work schedule), I head over to my esthetician Amanda. She's a pro at waxing my brows back into submission. In between appointments I'll pluck any strays and do a little trimming.

Daily Eyebrow Care- How to Trim Your Eyebrows

The next images were all taken in my makeup mirror while I was actually doing my brows, hence the strange angles and things. The colors ended up a little strange, but I think you'll get the idea!

The other issue I have, other than having very thick brows, is that they grow like weeds. I'm a girl whose hair grows about 2 inches in 6 weeks. My eye brows aren't that bad, but they are definitely speedy! So, I do some trimming. I use a brow brush (or a spooly brush), comb things up, and using my small Tweezerman scissors I'll trim hairs if they stick up over my brow. Don't trim a lot at the same spot, you want them to be varied. I trim more tightly in the middle of my brows and very rarely trim the "tail" of my brows.

Here you can see that before filling them in, my brows can be a little thin in the center and sometimes I'll have bald spots. This isn't because I pulled out the hairs, but really, the area is just a little thin and if it's time for 1 hair to fall out and it was integral... yeah, a little bald spot. (More on how I try to encourage growth below.) To hide this, I fill them in a little.

Filling in my eye brows

When filling in my eye brows, I really prefer the look from a thin pencil. A lot of people use powder, but for me I think the result is a too-fake brow that is very strong and overwhelms my face. Not good.

To fill in the center of my brows, just follow the numbers. First I draw a straight line along the bottom (1), up the middle (2), then across the top (3). Once I have my rectangle, I roughly fill all of this in (4). I use short strokes but try to make it roughly uniform.

This is from my other brow, but you can see here roughly how much I filled it in. All of the lines are inside of the areas that have actual hair. Having hair is important for a natural looking brow. Please don't be one of those people that just has makeup for an eyebrow. It looks good in pictures on Pinterest, but in person it's just... yeah.

To fill in the rest of my brow, I run the pencil along the top of the brow (again, just inside of the hair line) and fill in a little below that. All with short strokes. I don't do much over here, it's just a little to make the arch a bit defined, not really filling in.

Once I've finished that, I turn around my pencil and run the spooly end through my brow to make the filling a bit more natural looking.

 photo browcloseup.jpg

One thing that I have alluded to but haven't really explained is what I do to help treat the thinned areas/bald spots. They tend to come and go as hair fall out and grow back, but to hurry things along there are a few things that I do. First, I do scrub my brows every day. Rather than simply washing my face, I make a point of scrubbing my brows with a washcloth to help remove any skin/flakes. This helps a lot with having new hair grow, they don't seem to want to poke through non-exfoliated skin for some reason. When I get a little bald spot due to hairs falling out I'll use my lash serum (Revitalash) in that area, and lately I've been using the Boom Boom Room's Brow Job for that same reason. This help more hairs to grow in to fill in the area.

how to get great eye brows at home

Here's the end result! They're more defined and neater, but not overly done and dominating my face.

What are your brow tricks?

How I Apply Liquid Foundation for a Flawless (and Natural) Finish!

How to Apply liquid foundation
Now that I'm a "little" older (not really that old, I'm 35), it is definitely harder to get a great finish with my foundation. I don't have wrinkles, but I swear it's like a foundation can settle into every little dry spot or imperfection. Just by applying via my "old" way (aka- my young self just slathering on with fingers and maybe blending a little by the nose with a sponge) can result in disaster. Truly. And it isn't even the fault of the foundation, it's me!

After reading some online about foundation application, watching a ton of YouTube videos and breaking out my old Kevin Aucoin makeup books (the man was a master), I've tried out a ton of different foundation techniques. This is what I've settled on as the quickest and best method for a flawless foundation application. And really, it isn't that quick. Sigh.

Apply liquid Foundation
I prep my skin with a lightweight moisturizer (or BB cream that doesn't have much coverage, I like the Stila 10 in 1) and an eye cream. I wait a few minutes for it to sink in and then start on foundation. I apply a little to the back of my hand, if I need to mix other shades in then I do it there.

I use a dense brush. This is the IT Cosmetics foundation brush from this set at QVC, but I also really like the Urban Decay Optical Blur Brush. I know there's great love for the MAC skunk brush here, but I'm just not really a fan for some reason.

I dab a little onto the brush and then put that onto the areas I'll want to cover with dotting. I put it on my nose, the middle of my forehead, chin and cheeks, though really very close to my nose. I apply most of my foundation to the center of my face and use less as I get to the edges, so I have almost none really on my actual cheeks and on my forehead.

how to apply liquid foundation
Once I have my foundation roughly where I want it, I stipple the area to spread out the foundation into an even application. I let that sit for a minute or two, and I wipe off any excess foundation from my brush onto a kleenex. Then I go back with the same brush and go over the areas with small round circles. If I'm applying concealer, this is when I do it (I apply in a less exaggerated triangle that is suddenly all the rage. More details in my how to use concealer post.)

Apply liquid foundation for an airbrushed finish
Next I grab my Beauty Blender sponge. And yeah, it kind of does need to be the Beauty Blender. None of the "dupes" have quite the right consistency, so they don't have the same results. I bounce the sponge all over the place, using the smaller end around my eyes and nose and the wide end on my forehead and cheeks.

Then I wait a few minutes. If I haven't done my eyes, this is a good time to do it. But if my eye makeup is a bit more intense, I usually start with my eyes (so I can wipe off any fallout without messing up my foundation) and then do my face. So, I'll go and do my hair now.

blotting foundation with a tissue
I think the real secret to why this look works is the kleenex. I learned this about 5 years ago from Elke Von Freudenberg, and I had stopped for a few years, but now I'm obsessed again! Take a kleenex and gently blot your face. Be gentle, you don't want to remove the pigment, but instead you'll take out some of the oil and "liquid" of the foundation. I usually don't blot my nose much, somehow that seems to mess up my nose. But this is a must for my chin, cheeks and forehead.

Finally, I apply a very lightweight powder to set everything. I put it under my eyes and in my t-zone only. Lately I've really been loving this Aqualillies for tarte Amazonian clay finishing powder. It's lightweight like the MUFE HD, but more mattifying. It's apparently limited edition, but I hope Tarte sees the light and keeps it around!
