Formal Looks: Olivia Wilde Golden Globes 2011

Updo, formal look, make up, wedding hair
Olivia Wilde Golden Globes 2011
I think that Olivia Wilde's makeup looked great at the Golden Globes. Her hair was a bit too casual for such a blingy dress... but that's just me.

Celebrity makeup artist Spencer Barnes created Olivia's makeup for NARS.

The Item You Need This Spring: A Bright Gloss!

Today's post is from my friend Henna, over at Canadian Beauty. I met Henna about 18 months ago at a blogging event in New York, and I felt an instant connection to her. She is smart and funny with just the right amount of sarcasm. We ran around SoHo and shopped (she even put up with me wanting to go to every Marc Jacobs store and barely buying a thing), and I really wish I could see her like this every year!

If you invest in just one item, let it be a brightly coloured lipgloss.

This spring, my go-to is Nars' Angelika Lip Gloss. This is a bright candy-floss coloured gloss that is sheer enough to work with pretty much anything. It's going to be a gentle addition of colour to your face, and will instantly make you look more awake and refreshed. It's also cool-toned so it's going to make your teeth look whiter! And since this is a gloss and not a lipstick, you can throw it in your purse and apply it without even looking into the mirror.

Be fabulous this Spring without even trying.

An Eye Shadow Primer Confession

Eye shadow primer, urban decay primer potion, nars, too faced shadow insurance, holy grail
In the past, my holy grail eye shadow primer has always been Urban Decay's Primer Potion. In the past I've made half hearted attempts to find something better, cheaper, with packaging that doesn't waste most of the product... (Yes, UDPP is now available in a tube. Note that tube is huge and I have 3 backup wands in my stash right now. Yes, there was a good sale on-line for $4 each, don't look at me like that.)

Flirty and Playful for Prom

Maggie, Oscar 2010, prom, makeup, quick look
I loved Maggie Gyllenhaal's look at this year's Oscars! The bright pink lippie was a breathe of fresh air, and I think that this look is particularly well suited for prom this year. Can't you see this with a short neon dress? Perfect!

Molly Stern, Make Up Artist, Cover GirlUpdated 4/21/2010 Somehow, I got more information about this look (a little birdie emailed me actually), and I knew that I had to share it with everyone! It turns out that the look was created by Molly Stern, an amazing makeup artist that works with Cover Girl. Molly is one of my favorite makeup artists, I find her looks to be fresh and very playful, so that likely explains why I loved Maggie's look so much!

Here's what Molly had to say about Maggie's look, it's much more interesting than the list of colors I had before.
Maggie is the muse of spring. Her Dries Van Noten gown is a swirl of bright colors that fades into white. For her makeup I wanted to bring out the color of her eyes with some depth while keeping with the brightness of her overall style.

We started off the look by refreshing the skin with Jurlique Rose Water spray. Then I prepped the skin with Shu Uemura red:juvenus vitalizing concentrate and lightly moisturized with La Mer moisturizing lotion.

For a flawless complexion I primed Maggie's skin with COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Serum Primer (out in July!!).

Then I lightly applied some Chantecaille future skin foundation in the color 'cream' only where she needed it. Then lastly I dusted La Mer powder foundation in 'Ivory' to set the skin for the big night.

For her amber peachy cheeks I used COVERGIRL & Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Rich Cinnamon and dusted some NARS "dolce vita" blush on the apples.

For Maggie's eyes of layered copper smoke I based her eye with COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire. Next I deepened her lid with NARS soft touch shadow pencil "skorpios". Then I blended into the crease Shu Uemura pressed eye shadow "p brown 810" and lastly I lightly dusted Shu Uemura pressed eyeshadow in "n me brown 860" all over the lid for a golden finish. For the undereye, I resmudged the COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast under her lash line to bring out the blue of Maggie's eyes. Finally I defined her lashes by combining brown and black mascara. I painted the lashes with both colors using COVERGIRL LashBlast Length for perfectly flirty long lashes.

On Maggies lips I applied NARS "schiap" lip color –it was the perfect shade to finish off the look. Its bright hue matches Maggie's vibrant sense of style and confidence.

The finished product was perfection. She looked like herself. Authentic, cool and beautiful. Being a part of Oscar day with a nominee is such an honor. It's like an actress' wedding day with Hollywood. I love being here. I feel so blessed.

Runway to Prom: Thakoon Spring-Summer 2010

Prom, 2010, Thakoon, Quick Makeup
I remember well how stressful Prom season was. Will he ask you or not? Where did you buy the dress? Who even has time to think about hair and makeup?

Well, I thought I'd take a few laps through my giant backlogs of email (It's rather impressive how many thousands of emails I have managed to fully ignore in my inbox) and pull up a few looks that might help everyone out! For the next month or so I'll be showcasing a different look a day about 3-4 times week. It might be hair, it might be makeup. It might be from a runway show or a Hollywood event. Somewhere a pro took time to send me a pic and instructions on how to achieve the look at home. While I'm doing this for the girls preparing for prom, these looks would work just as well for another event, like a wedding. There will even be a few contests included in these posts, so be prepared!

As always, remember that these looks are a "jumping off point" meaning you can use them as inspiration to recreate the look on your own, use elements of the look (maybe you really love the cheek but not the eye) and that even the colors are just suggestions. If they used a rose colored blush but you already have one from a different brand or in a slightly different shade don't feel you need to rush out and buy the recommended one.

NARS Shanghai Lily- Spring 2008

I finally realized that I have never posted about NARS, which is odd since I love NARS. Curious about what is new with their products, I rushed over to their site just in time for the news about Spring 2008!

Just looking at the products, they seem to be somewhat disjointed, and don't really fit together as a collection. But, upon further investigation it turns out that this is a look inspired by Marlene Dietrich. Think strong brows, strong lip with subtle eyes, suddenly this seems like such a fresh idea!

All three of the eye shadows in this collection look soft but with frost/shimmer to keep things from being too boring

Both of the lipsticks work well with the "Marlene" look, and are also great for this winter!

Thank goodness they decided to release this lip gloss on it's own! The Dolce Vita shade has long been a favorite lipstick of mine, it's a great red/berry color that is very flattering to all skin tones. Released this Holiday as part of a set (with eye shadow) for Sephora, it appears this color is now available on its own!

For days that you feel more like playing up your eyes, you'll need a pale lippie, and these will be perfect! Just add the eye shadows, a thick dark eyeliner and some false eye lashes and you'll be set!
