Tarte's Rainforest After Dark Palette Swatch and Review

This fall, Tarte came out with an amazing palette that I think is pretty much a must have. I'm ashamed to admit that it has taken me a few weeks to post about it, simply because it really is ideal for fall and it has been so warm at my house that I didn't want to break it out! This palette is limited edition and it seems to already be sold out on Tarte's website, though you can find it over on Sephora still.

Tarte's Rainforest After Dark Palette Swatch and Review

In this palette:
• Highlighter in Champagne
• Bronzer in Park Avenue Princess
• Blush in Unleashed
• 6 Shadows: Bare to Explore (pink beige), Make a Mauve (plum mauve), Plum Away with Me (dark plum), Up to No Gold (gold), Tangled Up in You (tan), Don’t Turn A-Brown (dark brown)

So far I've mostly been using the Bare to Explore/Make a Mauve duo on my lids with Plum Away With Me as a liner. A little bit of the amazing gold, Up to No Gold seems to punch up any look, it's quickly becoming a favorite of mine!

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Review and Swatches

In case you haven't noticed I'm a huge fan of Too Faced (and this week you'll see a lot of Too Faced, I have a lot of reviews coming up), and their brand new Cat Eyes palette is pretty amazing. I can't say enough about it! It's so amazing that we're dedicating a special edition of Makeup Wars to this palette today. You'll see looks and tutorials from our bloggers (here's my Too Faced Cat Eyes Tutorial), though you shouldn't be surprised to see a lot more looks using this palette all over the web for weeks to come.

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Review and Swatches
One of the most interesting things about this palette is the wide range of colors. Yes, there are 3 very light colors. They're so light that on my super pale skin they don't show up very well (as you can see in my swatch pictures below).

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Swatches

The real reason go get this palette is the medium and dark shades. The light shades are well pigmented and great neutrals, though they just don't show up well on my skin in pictures. The purples are my favorites, though the neutral brown/bronze shades in the day set are also very pretty! The silvery-blue of Kitty Glitter is pretty but powdery. I recommend using it over a glitter primer such as Shadow Insurance Glitter Glue.

Lilac Every Day Eye Tutorial With Too Faced's Cat Eyes Palette

Too Faced Cat Eyes Palette Tutorial

Today for Makeup Wars we're trying something different. We'll all be tackling the new Too Faced Cat Eyes palette, creating looks and tutorials!

I decided to create a pretty quick and easy look using the palette. Just because it has the darker colors and is named Cat Eyes, doesn't mean you need to create such a dramatic look. I did this quickly one morning before spending the day with my family.

Eye Tutorial With Too Faced's Cat Eye Palette

I started with a pre-prepped eye area. I prepped with concealer and then Shadow Insurance, which makes everything stay put all day long!

I used a medium fluff brush to spread Meow all over my lid and up to my brow bone.

Eye Tutorial With Too Faced's Cat Eye Palette

Next I used a slightly smaller fluff to apply a light wash of Pussy Cat on to my lid up to (but not into or over) my crease. Because it was over Meow you only get a hint of lilac, alone it is more vibrant.

Eye Tutorial With Too Faced's Cat Eye Palette

Next I grabbed my black Perfect Eyes Eyeliner and lined my eyes in the lashes. I know it doesn't look remotely perfect (that's why I'm giving you 2 pics of it, look! It's messy!) The point really was to get the liner down into the base of my lashes, something that is hard to do with wet shadow. The line is a bit thicker at the outer corner than the inner corner.

Eye Tutorial With Too Faced's Cat Eye Palette

Next, using a wet brush (a stiff and angled eye liner brush for my upper lash line, a small detail brush for the lower 1/2 lash line), I grabbed a little of Jungle Love and a bit of Panther. Along the top line I traced over the eyeliner, making things more even. The lower lash line, I just placed a bit of the color at the lash line, though I used a bit too much water (see how it kind of smudges down?) and I had to clean it up a little with a q-tip. After the shadow was on the lower lash line I applied more of the black eye liner into the water line.

Eye Tutorial With Too Faced's Cat Eye Palette

Finally, I finished up the rest of the look! I filled in my brows with Bulletproof Brows, highlighted above and below my brows with Instant Attitude Brow Lift and applied Better than Sex Mascara.

Lilac Every Day Eye Tutorial

Everything used:
Shadow Insurance
Cat Eyes Palette
Perfect Eyes Eyeliner
Bulletproof Brows
Instant Attitude Brow Lift
Better than Sex Mascara
Sweethearts Blush in Something About Berry
La Creme Lip Balm in Pink Slip

MAC All About Beige Look In A Box Review and Swatches

When I placed my massive Nordstrom Anniversary Sale order the other day (which was much pared down from everything that I originally put in my cart), the first thing to make the cut was the MAC All About Beige Look In A Box. While it looked a tad warm for my cool toned skin, I've been venturing into warmer territory since going auburn last year. Sometimes the results are good, sometimes bad. But this looked neutral enough that I would still be ok.

(FYI, you can check out the rest of my Nordstrom Sale Picks, but things are selling out so move fast!)

MAC All About Beige Look In A Box Review and Swatches

The great thing about this is that it is a pretty compact palette (it's about the dimensions of my iPhone, though thicker), and it has a lot of product in there! You could easily create a weekend's worth of looks using just this palette. It's great for those that just want to try a new look as well. After seeing how amazing the beige kit is, I'm really regretting taking the All About Plum kit out of my cart at the last minute.

MAC All About Beige Look In A Box Review and Swatches

Eyeshadows (top)
- Rocketgirl (satin finish)
- Plum Ember (satin finish)
- Sable Riche (frost finish)
- Cocktail Black (frost finish)
- Honesty (luster finish)
- Light Study (matte finish)

Powder Blushes (lower left)
- Love and Laughter (satin finish)
- Liberating (satin finish)

Lipsticks (bottom right)
- Modern Wow! (amplified finish)
- What’s Haute? (amplified finish)

- Duo-handled 275SE Brush/316SE Lip Brush

As usual, all of the products are very pigmented (you can't see Light Study very well because it blends into my skin, but there is a very light ivory shadow at the far left). They blend beautifully. The blushes are showing up as super pigmented in this swatch, but I applied them with a q-tip. With a regular brush they'll be a great compliment to the shadows. My only complaint is that I prefer my lippies to be separate lippies, that way they can join the collection in my purse that I carry around everywhere!

I'm still debating about picking up that All About Plum kit. Did you get it? How is it?

Urban Decay Electric Palette Review and Swatches

The Electric Palette arrived on my doorstep a few weeks ago, but with a few things going on in my "real" life, I admit that I only broke it out for pictures a few days ago.

Urban Decay Electric Palette Review and Swatches

When I first opened it, I was a bit unsure about it. The colors are bright, well pigmented and very, very not my usual style. I work in a conservative field and live in a somewhat conservative area. What would I do with a color like Gonzo or Thrash?

I think the answer is selective color punches in small areas. Pretty much all of these colors can work even for me, if used with neutral shades. You don't need to use Gonzo, Freak and Thrash all together. Instead you can use a small amount of Urban at the lash line and keep everything else nice and neutral.

Urban Decay Electric Palette Review and Swatches

The palette has 10 shades, 8 of which are new.

Revolt: bright metallic silver shimmer w/silver glitter. This silver was also in the Anarchy Palette (which I did eventually get after falling for the Shattered Case. I never reviewed it because it was already out of stock pretty much everywhere, but if UD ever makes cases like these again you need to buy them all!) The silver was beloved by many, so they included it here for a fun pop of shimmer. I do like this color, though note that when used over dry, non-primed skin it is powdery and doesn't have great payoff. I use it over a primer meant for glittery/powder shadows and it can become either a very intense silver shimmer or a pretty silver highlight.

Gonzo: bright turquoise matte with floating tonal pearl. Not really the color of the Muppet (he's more of a bright cobalt, a toned down version of Chaos), but a very pretty bright blue.

Slowburn**: bright red-orange matte with floating pearl.

Savage**: bright hot pink matte.

Fringe: bright metallic teal.

Chaos: bright blue matte with floating tonal pearl. This shade inspired the whole palette, you'll also find it in The Vice Palette.

Jilted**: bright metallic fuchsia with blue shift.

Urban**: bright metallic purple.

Freak: bright green with gold shift

Thrash: bright lime green matte with floating gold pearl

Note that there are a few of these colors that use pigments not approved for the eye area by the FDA in the US. I've marked those colors with a **. I'm a bit unsure how to use the colors otherwise, though I fully admit that I do use other products around my eyes that have pigments not approved in the US (I'm looking at you, Lancome Erica F Eye Shadow). Jilted in particular is the color that I was most excited about using around my lash line.

What do you think? Would you be able to incorporate this palette into your rotation and which colors would you use? Would you use the non-US approved pigment colors near your eyes?

Best Palette Update Ever: Too Faced's Natural Eyes Palette

Product Sent for Review

Too Faced Natural Eyes Shadow Palette

I've had the new (updated) Too Faced Natural Eyes Shadow Palette for a while now, so it is a bit embarrassing how long it has taken me to write about it and post swatch pictures. I could claim that I've been meaning to take pictures when I've used the shadows, but mostly I've just been happily using it and thinking that probably all of my readers have already purchased it. If you haven't bought this palette yet, you should. Even if you already have the old version (here's my review of the old Too Faced Natural Eyes Palette).

Too Faced new updated Natural Eyes Shadow Palette

Here you can see the old and new side by side. The first big difference is the packaging. I much prefer the newer palette. It isn't as deep (in the old, the extra depth was a drawer with useless brushes), and instead of being cardboard it is metal. This makes the palette much easier to travel with! As well, 3 of the shades have been replaced with completely new shades, and I think those new shades make repurchasing definitely worth it. The collection is now more wearable for every day, especially with the swapping out between Nude Beach (a pretty pink, but too glittery and powdery for every day) to the more neutral Nudie.

Too Faced Natural Eyes Shadow Palette swatch pictures

Too Faced has laid things out in trios, but obviously you can can mix and match as you want. As well, I love that the shades you're more likely to use frequently are larger, it's great to know you won't run out of the basic colors well before hitting pan on the more "fun" shades! My favorite look is Nudie over my entire lid, Honey Pot on the outer half of the lid and then Push Up or Erotica (depending on how dramatic I'm feeling) in my crease. I'll also use the crease color on my smudge brush when I smudge a little liner into my lash line. It's a slightly smoky look that still completely appropriate for work!

An Eye Shadow Steal: ELF Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette

I Bought It

ELF Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette review and swatch pictures

Have you seen the e.l.f. Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette California? It looks quite a bit like the Sephora Moonshadow Baked Palette - In The Nude, which is obviously much more expensive. They're pretty good dupes in terms of shades, though I've found there are a few tricks to using this palette. I do really like it, I included it in my post on the Best Products From ELF

ELF Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette in California

All 10 shadows in this palette are metallic with frosty shimmer. While you probably wouldn't go overboard with this palette for an every day look, it's great for adding a little extra something to a daytime look or to create an amazing smoky eye for night!

Swatch of ELF Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette in California

Here I've swatched the shadows on my arm, both dry (and I hope you're not using shadows dry) and with primer. I grabbed the ELF Glitter Primer for this, mostly because I had ordered them together so the tube was sitting right next to me. However, after using the shadows for a while (it's been about 6 months) I've found that you really do need to use a primer with some "grab" when using these shadows, they're just too powdery to work well with a regular eye shadow primer. So, the ELF Glitter Primer, Too Faced Shadow Insurance or Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy are my choices.

Review of ELF Studio Baked Eyeshadow Palette in California

When swatching this palette, I found that the shadows are pretty hard, even for a baked shadow. I had to press quite a bit with a q-tip to get any shadow, and when it came it was pretty powdery. Then, once you have that shadow you need to pat (not sweep) it on to the area of application (where you have a grabby shadow primer). This is true when using the palette on yourself as well. I actually use q-tips to apply it to the area I want, then go back to blend with a brush.

While it does take a little extra to work with these shadows, once you've figured out the tricks I think they're a steal! For $10 you get 10 really pretty shimmery colors that you can work into almost any look. I really love that upper left shadow as an inner corner highlight and many of the darker colors are amazing along the lash line (I blend them into black liner using a stiff angled liner brush).

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette Review and Swatches

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette Review and Swatches

You may have heard about the new Chocolate Bar Eye Shadow Palette from Too Faced, though in my opinion this palette hasn't gotten enough hype. Because, it. is. amazing.

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette Review

Oh, so true. Whenever I open this palette, I get a huge whiff of chocolate (note, I think mine might be a bit stronger smelling than others, my friend Kelly says that she can't smell it much, her Chocolate Bar Review just went up today as well). It's worth buying this palette just to get the smell of the chocolate every morning!

The reason it smells so amazing? There's chocolate in the shadows. It turns out there are a lot of skin care benefits with cocoa powder (check out my post explaining how cocoa powder helps your skin), and Too Faced Co-Founder and Creative Director Jerrod Blandino was inspired to add cocoa powder to makeup while having a chocolate facial and learning about the benefits of cocoa at a Hawaiian spa. Now, you'll find Cocoa Powder in Too Faced's Chocolate Soliel Bronzers (my favorite is their Milk Chocolate Soliel Bronzer) and the Chocolate Bar Palette.

While I do have quite a few neutral palettes, I think that this palette is my favorite for its versatility. There are a lot of colors that work well together, but they aren't all in the exact same family. So, with the same palette it is easier to create a lot of different looks. I recently took it on a trip (yes, only 3 days), and I swear I'm a freak that usually needs a shadow palette per day while out of town. I don't do well without a lot of options. For this trip I brought only the Chocolate Bar, and there were enough options to keep even me happy, so you know there must be a lot of options!

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette Swatches
1. Gilded Ganache
2. Salted Caramel
3. Hazelnut
4. White Chocolate
5. Marzipan
6. Creme Brule
7. Semi-Sweet
8. Haute Chocolate

Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette Swatch Pictures
9. Milk Chocolate
10. Strawberry Bon Bon
11. Cherry Cordial
12. Black Forest Truffle
13. Candied Violet
14. Champagne Truffle
15. Triple Fudge
16. Amaretto

Like all Too Faced Shadow Palettes, these shadows are well pigmented and apply really easily. They aren't super powdery, they blend great and last me all day without fading, creasing or other issues. (Note, I always use a shadow primer, my favorite is Too Faced's Shadow Insurance.)

My favorite looks so far with this palette are:
1. Marzipan over the inner half of my mobile lid, Creme Brule over the outer half of the lid. Hazelnut in my crease and outer V, then Brown Too Faced Perfect Eye Eyeliner smudged into my lashes with a little Gilded Ganache over the liner. Finish with a ton of Better than Sex mascara!

2. Champagne Truffle over my entire mobile lid, Milk Chocolate in the crease, Black Too Faced Perfect Eye Eyeliner smudged into my lashes with a little Black Forest Truffle smudged into the liner. Again, finish with a ton of Better than Sex mascara!

Which shadows would you pair together? Have you tried this palette yet?

Easy Day to Night with Urban Decay's Vice 2 Palette!

Nothing to Disclose

Easy Day to Night with Urban Decay's Vice 2 Palette!

Today my friend Brooke, from Blushing Noir, has a great day to night eye look with Urban Decay's Vice 2 Palette!

Just because a palette (and sometimes the brand) houses some seriously intense colors, doesn’t mean that you can’t be neutral with it! It’s easy to create a wear to work look and then amp it up with “bold neutrals” or an even snazzier color for evening.

For example, the Urban Decay Vice 2 Palette is new for Holiday 2013. Clearly, it’s beautiful and also boasts a broad range of colors… including those shades you just might not ever think of wearing. Ever. But maybe you still want it. Face it, you just might find a use for that hot pink eye shadow.

Quick and Easy Day Look Tutorial with Urban Decay's Vice2 Palette

Above I used two shades from the Vice 2 Palette to create an easy day eye. Wear it to work, play group, around the house… basically anywhere. Apply Habit all over the lid and Rewind to the crease. Pop on an everyday taupe liner (such as Urban Decay Hustle 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil) and your everyday mascara (I used MAC Plushlash).

Quick and Easy Night Look Tutorial with Urban Decay's Vice2 Palette

A pop of any bold shade makes it perfect for an after work happy hour or an evening out. Above I added Madness to the outer V and a bit under the outer third of the lower eye lid, as well as amped up my choice of liner by re-applying. Be sure to add a coat of Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara to boost lashes even further.

Another added bonus to using this palette for your look? It has a mirror and a double-sided brush, making it perfect to keep in your desk or bag for on-the-go updates. The included brush was the only one I used for these looks.

What do you think? If you’re not feeling the blues and pinks there are also some deep browns such as Smokeout and Ambush. How bold can you go?

Brooke is the blogger behind Blushing Noir, and one of my great blogging friends! She lives near Pittsburgh where she is raising her kiddos and was one of this 2012's finalists for Allure Beauty Blogger of the Year! (She won "Most Buzzworthy"!)

Too Faced Loves Sephora 15 Years Of Beauty Palette
I'm a sucker for palettes, and the ones I seem to reach for the most often are all from Too Faced! This So Cal brand makes all of my favorite palettes, so I was really excited when they sent me their Too Faced Loves Sephora Anniversary Palette. It has 2 basic shadows that everyone needs, some fun colors, an amazing blush and some great matte bronzers that are just sun kissed enough without being orange. Not to mention that slot for a travel sized Shadow Insurance Primer.

So, basically this is the perfect palette to take with you anywhere. All you need is a great BB cream and a mascara, this palette and you should be good to go!

Review: Mally Pro-Tricks Palette, The Palette The Fills In the Blank Spots

Product Sent for Review

Mally Beauty Pro-Tricks Palette Review and Swatches
You know how there are some amazingly large and varied eye shadow palettes that offer everything that you need (or think you need) to get a great eye shadow look? They have the highlight color for your inner eye, the perfect matte brown for your crease and a few other colors to help you get a great every day look, out for dinner with your significant other and maybe even a little added shimmer for when you're really going out, out?

This is not that palette. For some reason there are complaints on line that you can't really create an entire look with this palette. No, this is not the palette if you want 1 palette that will be everything for you. There are some great nude palettes out there, but this palette is the one with everything that the nude palettes leave out. This is the one that gives you more options to add dimension to your nude shadows, not just a shadow primer but 2 shade modifiers to help make shadows have more depth or to pop a color out more. It even comes with a great blending brush (I guess you could use it to apply a light wash to the eye, but really it is best for blending).

Read on to see way too many pictures of the colors.

See that palette? That sooo lovely LORAC Pro Palette? With the pretty eye shadows? I've wanted to buy it since it was released. Which was a long time ago. But, I was a good girl and didn't buy it (I had a hard time justifying the cost when I own so much eye shadow already).

But, through a twist and turn of events, I had one sent to me by some nice people, that are not from LORAC. (It was the Coupons.com people. They sent me some moneys for ULTA to use with their ULTA coupon. They want me to post a few looks, that's coming up soon, but I had to share the pretty shadows first.)

Too Faced Natural Eye: One of My Go-To Eye Palettes for Work

Too Faced Natural Eye Palette Review
This week I'm continuing my Too Faced "week" (loosely used, it will be a few more days!) and today I'm showcasing one of my real "go-to" eye shadow palettes. On days that I don't really want to think about it, I will frequently grab this palette to create a pretty but neutral and professional look.

Too Faced Natural Eye Palette Swatch
The only issue I have with these shades is that Nude Beach is pretty... glittery? It's not really glitter, it's more like powder that's about the size of glitter but only a bit shimmery. Regardless, it has a lot of fallout, so I tend to use that color sparingly. I have noticed that it mixes well with Silk Teddy, so I'll often dip my brush into both pans and use them together.

Too Faced Natural Eye, How to Get the Look
When using this palette, I end up with this eye look about 90% of the time. Here I've used Silk Teddy all over my lid, up over my crease and into the contour area a little. I then applied Push Up in the crease and to about the point where the Silk Teddy ends in the contour, and in a little V almost over the outer 1/3 of the lid. I blend all of the shadows very lightly.

Here I've used a brown smudgy liner (this is Stila Oscar Fish), which I've pushed into the lash line and then smudged into the shadow. I finish by curling, curling and still curling my lashes and then applying mascara (more about how I apply mascara).
