Stocking Up: What to Buy TODAY from Kiehl's and Kate Somerville

Product Sent for Review, I Bought It, Affiliate Links

Best from Kiehl's and Kate Somerville

You may have noticed something about my post the other day on Sensitive Skin Pore Cleansing, namely that there are a few skin care brands that I seem to use over and over. I use a lot of different skin care items, most of which don't ever make it to the blog, and I definitely do have my favorite brands. 2 of my favorite brands are holding Friends and Family sales right now, and they are ending soon! I placed 2 skin care orders last night for myself (and my husband), and I thought I'd share my favorite items from each brand.

Kiehl's

20% off everything until 5/22 with the code FRIENDS at checkout.

Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado: Great basic moisturizing eye cream, perfect under concealer and what I use if my eye area has any irritation at all. It's very soothing.
Midnight Recovery Concentrate: I've posted about this oil a lot (like, a LOT), but it's one of my biggest skin care favorites. A few drops at night before I go to bed will fix any dry areas and I wake up super glowy!
Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution: I have a whole series showing my progress with the Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, but the Vitamin C in this product is also great for anti-aging and is in a very stable form. It doesn't cause any irritation!
Super Multi-Corrective Cream: This is one of my go-to night creams. I layer it usually over serums. There's a full post on the Super Multi-Corrective Cream here.
Ultra Facial Cleanser: This is a great face wash, it's very gentle and also a bit hydrating. If you have any sensitivity or dryness it is worth checking out.
Facial Fuel Energizing Face Wash: One of my hubby's faves
Facial Fuel Energizing Scrub: Another of his favorites
Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask: My biggest go-to clay mask, and I just realized I forgot to add it to my order... I may need to buy more!
Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+: Great for under makeup or just every day sun exposure.
Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 30: One of my favorite sunscreen daily moisturizers.
Lip Balm #1: I keep this stashed all over the house and on my night stand.
Ultimate Strength Hand Salve: I keep this on my night stand and it's also in the pocket of my white coat at work! I ordered some for both me and hubby, and I even got a small tube of grapefruit scent to try out!

Kate Somerville

Save 20% with code FRIENDS17
If you look in the center of the page, you'll see the KS logo, kind of floating... click it. You'll be prompted to share the sale on social media, and it will then give you a personalized code for 30% off instead!

ExfoliKate: This is the KS cult favorite! I use it a few times a week in the shower, under a minute to gently exfoliate my skin! I have sensitive skin and can handle the original formula, but there's a gentle version as well. Note, I use about the size of a pea and a full sized tube lasts me nearly a year. You can check out a few of my posts about ExfoliKate.
Detox Daily Cleanser: I have a huge stockpile of this gentle AHA cleanser at home and will be using it daily for the rest of my life.
ExfoliKate Cleanser: I also use this cleanser, read more about it here.
EradiKate Acne Treatment: This is pretty much just the KS version of the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion, which for some reason has never worked for my blemishes, but the KS version dose. It also doesn't dry out my skin at all which I love! I even have the travel version.
Somerville360 Face and Body Self Tanning Towelettes: I'm not usually a self tanner girl, but I bought these for spring break and they are very easy to use, and portable! Not orange at all.
Clinic-To-Go Resurfacing Peel Pads: Easy to use lactic acid peels. They didn't show up in my recent post on clearing out my pores because I've been out for a while (and they're actually out of stock on KS), but they're in my Sephora cart!
DermalQuench Liquid Lift: I was introduced to this after a KS facial at the Four Season in West Palm Beach, and I loooove it! It's a great spray, super lightweight, and it makes my skin very glowy. It adds a lot of hydration to my skin without feeling heavy.
Daily Deflector Moisturizer: Great daily SPF moisturizer (just bought a new one for summer in my order)
Daily Deflector Waterlight: Great lightweight SPF for under makeup, I ordered more of this one too.
RetAsphere: This is the retinoid cream I'm currently using.
Line Release: I just bought this eye cream to try out.

Sensitive Skin Friendly Pore Busters

Sensitive Skin Friendly Pore Busters

Who doesn't want to have clear, poreless skin? I definitely have that as a goal! Unfortunately, since I have Rosacea, my skin is a bit more sensitive than it used to be. And somehow, enlarging pores (or at least larger appearing) pores is also part of aging. So, just when I want to go completely crazy with skin care products to pull all of that stuff out of my pores and make them look smaller... I can't. Because my skin will get red and irritated.

Instead of going crazy with peels and pore strips, I've finally figured out a routine that works for my skin! I got a facial about 3 weeks ago, and the esthetician complimented me on my pores. That has never happened! Instead, there's always discussion about how much extracting to do.

Read on to see how I've been clearing out my pores, evening my skin tone and smoothing it all out. This routine is also great for anti-aging, works for every skin type, and I have product recommendations for different price points!

Why I'm Cleansing Twice: ExfoliKate Cleanser Review

I Bought It, Affiliate Links

Exfolikate Cleanser Review

I've made no secret of my love of Kate Somerville. She's the esthetician to the stars in LA, and she has an amazing skin care line. Her products are a bit of a splurge for me, but they're well worth it.

One of my all time favorite products is her ExfoliKate, a green scrub that takes only a minute to work! It leaves my skin smooth and glowy, a tube of this stuff lives in my shower all time. I probably use it about once or twice a week, depending upon how my skin is doing. You can read my original ExfoliKate review, check out my 5 year blog anniversary ode to ExoliKate (which was 5 years ago now), or buy it from Sephora, Nordstrom or Kate Somerville. I don't even know how many tubes of ExfoliKate I've purchased. One tube lasts me about 10-11 months, and I've used it continuously for about 7 or 8 years. I even take it with me when I travel!

So, when I heard about the new Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Cleanser, I was at once excited about it, but also didn't really care. I love ExfoliKate! But, do I need both? Especially when I have already stocked up on Kate Somerville Detox Cleanser to the point that I will never need to purchase face wash again in my life? It's kind of hard to justify buying more expensive face wash when you own more Kate Somerville than most spas.

Add Some Matte: Hard Candy Turn Me Matte Review

I Bought It, Affiliate Links

Hard Candy Turn Me Matte Review

When the weather starts to turn a little warm, I swear the oil production in my t-zone ramps up like crazy! I suddenly become very shiny, and it's hard to find solutions to mattify. There are a few primers out there that help, but I admit that I'm not a big fan of the feeling of heavy primers on my skin. I've tried milk of magnesia as a mattifying face primer, but the pH is pretty high, so long term this isn't a great solution for the skin. But, it definitely works!

Recently I received an email telling me about new mix in drops from Hard Candy. They can be used alone, as a primer or you can add them to your foundation, creating a matte look and absorbing oil all day. I found them that day during a quick trip to the store to buy groceries, and it was a no brainer to add this to my cart!

Gentle and Hydrating: Every Night Skin Care with Simple Skincare

Gentle and Hydrating: Every Night Skin Care with Simple Skincare

I've partnered with Simple Skincare and Walmart this week to change up my skin care routine a bit. And really, the timing couldn't have been better! The weather has been crazy in my area. From a horrible wind storm that caused some damage to my home, to plummeting temperatures and no humidity. Walking to the end of the driveway to get the mail results in cold, red, and irritated skin. The results just aren't pretty!

Gentle and Hydrating: Every Night Skin Care with Simple Skincare

So, I've been following this routine each night to gently remove all of my makeup and hydrate my skin. I do add in a 4th step (more on that in a bit, but it's because I typically have on waterproof eye liner), but the entire thing takes about 2 minutes from start to finish!

1. Remove Makeup: Simple Cleansing Wipes
I love these wipes! They remove pretty much all of my makeup, except for that last 5% of my waterproof eye liner that I mentioned above. They don't leave residue behind, which I love.

2. Remove Eye Makeup: Simple Micellar Cleansing Water
I add in a second step of makeup removal with the Micellar Water. Since I usually have on waterproof liner, I wipe my eyes with a cotton round and the Cleansing Water. It gets all the last bits of eye liner off, and it doesn't leave anything behind on my skin.

3. Wash Face: Simple Moisturizing Facial Wash
So, if I've already done two makeup removing steps, which don't leave behind residue, why bother using a cleanser? Because this is more than a cleanser. I swear! It has a nice light lather, and it feels great on my skin (but keep it away from your eyes, it isn't formulated to work there). It rinses off easily, and afterwards my skin feels like I've moisturized it. It isn't a full replacement for my lotion, but it really helps my skin feel more hydrated.

4. Moisturize: Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturizer
What's a winter skin care routine without a moisturizer? This one is a bit more hydration than my usual lotion, and it really helps to calm and soothe any irritation.

The best selection of Simple Skincare that I've found is from Walmart, head there to try out the products! The wipes will go on special in Walmart stores on 3/19: Buy Any, Get Free 25ct wipes ($7.99) for Simple Skincare.

What changes have you made to deal with winter skin care issues?

Makeup Wars: My Favorite Face Oils

I Bought It, Product Sent for Review, Affiliate Links

My Favorite Face Oils
My face oils hanging out on the counter this weekend. Yes, that's a lot of hair product in the background. I might have issues.

Today for Makeup Wars we're sharing our favorite face oils! I admit that a few years ago, the idea of putting oil on my face was completely crazy to me. Why would I do that on purpose? But, I've definitely come around, I use them almost daily, and I can't imagine how I got through winter (or a plane ride) without a hydrating face oil!

I currently have 3 different face oils, which I use at different times. In the past there were a few others that I liked as well, and they're at a slightly lower price point. I'll discuss them at the end!

1. In the AM, Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate (from Kiehl's, or Nordstrom, full post here): This is the oil I use the least often. It is a lightweight oil that has a lot of antioxidants to help your skin fight off potential sources of free radicals, such as sun exposure and pollution. It also adds a nice hydrating punch, but if you give it a few minutes to sink in you can still wear makeup over it! I don't use it often because I use my Midnight Recovery so often, using both together is just too much moisture for my combination skin. But, if I've forgotten to use Midnight Recovery or I need a mid-day perking up, this is the oil I reach for.

2. In the PM, Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate (from Kiehl's, or Nordstrom): This is the oil I use the most often, and I go through about 2.5-3 ounces every winter. I've written about this face oil too many times to count! It is lightweight, sinks into my skin very quickly, and can add a lot of moisture to my skin when it desperately needs it!

I pay a lot of attention to how my skin feels at the end of the day, and if it is feeling dry at all (which definitely happens in the winter or when I've been traveling), then I'll add 2-3 drops of Midnight Recovery at the end of my skin care routine. I wake up with my skin much glowier and more hydrated!

I go through so much of Midnight Recovery because I don't only use it on my face, it also goes on my hands, neck, chest... you get the idea.

3. Heavier Duty, Bobbi Brown Extra Face Oil (from Bobbi Brown, or Nordstrom): In the past, I've packed a deluxe sample of Midnight Recovery every time I travel. But, now that it's been on so many trips, my little bottle suddenly fell apart recently. I took this as a sign that it was time to try something else.

I did a little looking around, and opted for Bobbi Brown's Face Oil. It comes in three different sizes, this is the 10 mL travel size, there's also a 6mL Rollerball (which would be great for in your purse, but I don't want a rollerball for travel) or a full 30 mL (which comes in a cute little bottle, but I can't tell on-line how you get the product out, is there a dropper? Do you just put in your fingers?)

Bobbi's oil is a bit heavier than Midnight Recovery (it is olive oil based), but it does sink in to my skin pretty well. I think it is best for night time, even with just a few drops it is too much for under makeup. But, this is some serious moisture, I think more than Midnight Recovery. Similar to Midnight Recovery, only a few drops are needed. In the morning I wake up glowy!

Other option:
• L'Oreal Age Perfect Cell Renewal Facial Oil (at ULTA, or Amazon): This one is very similar to the Midnight Recovery, not surprising as Kiehl's is owned by L'Oreal. It's a great lower priced option if you want to try that one.

• Derma e Hydrating Facial Treatment Oil (at Amazon): This is a bit heavier and more hydrating than the L'Oreal. I've bought it in person at ULTA, but it isn't on their website.

Kiehl's has sent both of these face oils for consideration in the past, though I've probably purchased gallons of them on my own. I bought the Bobbi Brown on my own.

4 Easy Skin Care Tips To Look Younger Fast

Sponsored Post

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night Moisturizer

Pretty much every woman I know would love to look younger, fresher and more awake. But, in order to achieve this goal you'll need to have some serious work done, right? Or at least pay someone a lot of money to use some lasers on your face.

But, it turns out that there are some easy to follow tips that can help you look younger in 4—6 weeks, without a visit to the dermatologist for a prescription or an office procedure!

I've pulled together four of my favorite skin care tips for looking younger. They're easy to follow, and you only need to take a trip to your local drugstore! The key to getting them to work is consistency. Sleeping in your makeup, instead of your treatment product, won't get you the younger and fresher skin that you're craving.

1) Look for Retinol in Your Skin Care:
Retinol is a form of Vitamin A, and is considered the gold standard ingredient of anti-aging skincare. There is extensive evidence in medical literature that retinol improves skin's tone, texture, fights blemishes and improves the appearance of fine line/wrinkles. It does this by increasing your skin's cell turnover, meaning outer layers of skin cells are shed more easily and your skin accelerates production of new skin cells. The result is fresher, younger looking skin is revealed. You'll also see a decrease in your skin's production of Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs). MMPs actually break down collagen, contributing to aging. So, with decreased breakdown you'll see higher levels of collagen in your skin.

Neutrogena® Rapid Wrinkle Repair® Regenerating Cream contains Retinol SA. What makes this so special? Retinol is more effective than other over the counter retinoids, such as Retinyl Palmitate or a Retinyl Ester, which are chemical derivatives of Retinol. The Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream is also the highest concentration of retinol on the market!

Neutrogena's Retinol SA acts over a longer period of time. That slower time of activation means that your skin will have less irritation but all of the benefits of the retinol! The end result is a skin care product that works better and much faster. In a clinical study, 100% of participants noticed a difference in their skin within a week of using the product, rather than the months expected with other over the counter retinols.

Neutrogena Pore Refining Exfoliating Cleanser

2) Be Sure to Regularly Exfoliate Your Skin:
Just as retinoids help to improve your skin's turnover, gentle exfoliation does the same thing. They work very well when used together, revealing smoother and more evenly toned skin! Pay close attention to your skin to determine how often you can exfoliate, the goal is fresh and glowing skin rather than red, irritated skin. Most skin can handle a few sessions a week with a deep cleansing device or using an exfoliating face wash every night.

3) Moisturized Skin:
Without realizing it, many of us are leaving our faces dry and parched. Pores and fine lines will show up more easily, and skin responds by trying to hold on to moisture, which means it creates more oil. The end result is lackluster skin that looks both older and shinier.

Using a good moisturizer like Neutrogena® Rapid Wrinkle Repair® Night Moisturizer will make your skin look healthier and younger immediately! The moisture plumps up those outer layer of skin cells, minimizing the appearance fine lines. It will also help your skin to maintain its barrier function, so it will be better able to tolerate challenges such as extreme heat or cold with less redness and irritation.

Remove Eye Makeup

4) Take Off Your Eye Makeup:
It's appealing to skip eye makeup removal and just use your face wash, but there is always mascara and eye liner left behind. The result is a subtle layer of dark makeup that settles into the fine lines and pores around your eyes, making you look older and tired. Using a good eye makeup remover at the end of the day will make you look much younger and better rested in the morning! I'm always amazed at how much makeup comes off of my face even after I've used a regular cleanser. Don't skip this step!

Glowing Mid-Winter Skin: It's Possible!

Sponsored Post

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night Moisturizer

My skin loves the summer. The humidity helps my dry areas stay moisturized, a little bit of sun gives me some glow, and my eczema is kept at bay. But, once the temperatures (and humidity) plummet, that fresh glow is long gone!

Skin faces a lot of challenges in the winter: low humidity, wind, and wide variations in temperature. It is no surprise that skin no longer looks glowy, instead your pores are larger and you look like you need a couple of nights of good sleep. Luckily trading out a few products will help your skin cope with the winter and make you look radiant again!

1) Retinol:
Retinol isn't only for fine lines and wrinkles, it also improves your skin's texture, decreases hyperpigmentation, and reduces blemishes. When you've been using retinol, your skin's turnover is increased, revealing fresher skin. This fresh skin will also have a more even skin tone with less hyperpigmentation.

Neutrogena® Rapid Wrinkle Repair® Regenerating Cream contains Retinol SA, and is the highest concentration of retinol. This version is a "sustained action", as the retinol is slowly released over hours. That longer time of release means that your skin will have less irritation but all of the benefits of a retinoid! This is perfect for the winter.

Since Neutrogena® Rapid Wrinkle Repair® Regenerating Cream is less irritating, you will be more likely to tolerate nightly use, rather than needing to space out to using the product every two to three nights. The end result is a skin care product that works much faster. In a clinical study, 100% of participants noticed a difference within a week of using the product, rather than the months expected with other, less effective, over the counter retinols.

Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleanser

2) Reach for a Gentle Cleanser:
All of the abuse our skin takes in the winter means skin is inflamed and irritated. Most of the year, skin can easily tolerate a cleanser that exfoliates, treats your acne and brightens your skin tone. However, the active ingredients in those cleansers can be irritating if your skin is facing other stressors.

Swapping out your regular facial cleanser for one that is gentle and hydrating can help soothe irritation, improving redness and tone. You'll notice that your skin is better able to cope with the stresses of winter after just a few days.

3) Gentle Exfoliation:
I love the effects of exfoliation during the summer. It makes my skin smoother and glowy, and takes care of any flaking I might have from dry skin. Because I am already fighting irritation from low temperatures and humidity, I avoid chemical exfoliation and go for physical exfoliation with a light scrub or a deep cleansing device like the Neutrogena Microdermabrasion System. The goal is fresh and glowing skin, rather than overly scrubbed and irritated.

Daily Sunscreen

4) Sunscreen:
Sunscreen is something that most people remember to use in the summer, but ignore in the winter. While the sun isn't shining, the UV rays are still penetrating the clouds, and because the UV is bouncing off of ice and snow, your sun exposure can actually be higher than during the summer! I use a lightweight, broad spectrum sunscreen that can be worn under my makeup every day. Daily use helps to prevent aging and hyperpigmentation.

All About Retinoids: Why You Want Them, How They Work and How I Use Them

All About Retinoids: Why You Want Them, How They Work and How I Use Them

Over the years I've written a series of posts on this site about skincare that I refer to over and over, and one of my most referenced posts, all about retinoids and how they work, has somehow become sadly out of date. I can't believe it's been 8 years since I wrote that post! Somehow the blog is almost 10 years old, and time has flown by.

I had already decided that it was definitely time for an update when I was asked by RoC Skincare if I would partner with them to write a post to help educate about retinoids. Here's where I disclose that yes, I'm a RoC Ambassador (they send me products and I have access to education about skincare, I don't get paid for this), and they're sponsoring this post. But I also want to disclose that the reason I agreed to become a RoC Ambassador is that it's the retinoid cream I use myself. Even before I became an Ambassador, I had been buying their products for years, they were recommended to me by a dermatologist friend as a great over the counter retinoid, and it works great for my sensitive skin. So, I've been one of their Ambassadors for years, and yes, I do still spend my own money on their products.

So, the big question is "why is everyone always so excited about retinoids?"

There's a good reason. They're really considered the Gold Standard for a topical, anti-aging skincare product. In study after study, retinoids are the ingredients that have helped reverse fine lines, wrinkles, even out skin tone and they even help acne. They have the most evidence, and their results are better than other active ingredients.

"Retinols and retinoids are BY FAR the best ingredients in dermatology, and especially when it comes to anti-aging. They stimulate increased cell turnover and remove the excess debris that clog pores. I like to refer to this as the 'detoxing' phase of skin rejuvenation. Benefits include evening out skin tone, decreasing acne, shrinking pores, decreasing redness, improving hyperpigmentation, increasing cell turnover, and most importantly, stimulating collagen which improve the appearance of wrinkles. Bottom line - everyone should use them!"
-Dr. Dhaval G. Bhanusali, a dermatologist in New York City.

Read on to learn more about how retinoids work, things to watch out for, and how I incorporate this magical active ingredient into my skincare routine.

Does Oily Skin Need Moisturizer?
IMAXtree

If you have oily skin, chances are you aren't using a moisturizer. Why would you? Your skin doesn't need it.

Or, does it?

This is a conversation I seem to be having a lot lately. I'm hoping to convince you that sebum production does not equal high moisture content in your skin. Read on to learn more.

Natural Beauty Section Picks for the Summer

Natural Beauty Section Picks for the Summer

Have you noticed that the "natural beauty" section at your local big box store is slowly (or not so slowly) expanding? What you could once only find at Whole Foods (which, by the way, has a pretty amazing beauty area) is now available at Target, Walmart and CVS. But, which products are worth picking up?

I've only just started to explore those beauty areas, but so far I have found some great products! Here are some of my favorites for summer.

1. Jason Gentle Basics Facial Cleanser (from Amazon)
This is a great, basic cleanser. It is very gentle, takes off pretty much everything and doesn't overstrip my face of natural oils. This is extra important after being out in the sun, my skin just doesn't need another source of irritation!

2. Jason Gentle Basics Day Lotion (get it from Amazon)
This is a lightweight, very basic and non-irritating lotion for under makeup. Note, you do still need to add a sunscreen over this. This is one that I'll be recommending year round.

3. Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream (from Amazon)
My skin needs a little extra pampering if I've been outside a lot. This cream from Weleda is nicely hydrating without being "too much", and it helps sooth any irritation I might have.

4. Avalon Organics Bath & Shower Gel, Refreshing Lemon (from Amazon)
It smells soooo good!

5. Avalon Organics Cream Shave, Nourishing Lavender (from Amazon)
Again, it smells great! I don't have to shave often (once a week or so, I did laser hair removal), but this shaving cream definitely helps me have a closer shave and it doesn't irritate my skin.

6. Weleda Oat Replenishing Treatment (from Amazon)
Being out in the sun and swimming can really dry out your hair, this deep treatment helps to reverse the effects. Use it once or twice a week as your hair needs it.

7. Waxelene (from Amazon)
A great alternative to a well known petroleum jelly, this can be used as a lip balm, moisturizer, or anything you want. It's also gluten free, which is great news if you have celiac!

8. Jason Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 (at Amazon)
I'm a fan of physical sunscreens with full UV spectrum coverage. This one does just that, keeping you protected but it doesn't feel too heavy on your skin. Don't forget to reapply every 2 hours or after swimming.

Great Retinoids to Help Fight Aging

Great over the counter retinoids to help erase fine lines and wrinkles
Last week I shared 11 Tips to Get The Most Out of Your Retinoid, and today I'm sharing some of the best over the counter retinoids! They come in different price points, chemical structures and percentages. As a general rule, a Retinol will be stronger than a Pro-Retinol, which needs to undergo more chemical reactions in your skin to be effective than Retinol does. That also means that it will be potentially more irritating. (You can combat that a bit, go check out those retinoid tips again.)

11 Tips to Get More Out Of Your Retinoid

Great anti-aging tips for using a retinoid

When it comes to anti-aging skin care, retinoids are the gold standard. They're the active ingredient most proven to actually reverse wrinkles, fine lines, skin tone irregularities. They also help acne. You can read more about how retinoids work in skin care, an old post on this site, but the basics are still the same.

The problem is, retinoids make it hard to love them. They are confusing (they come in soooo many variations! Over the counter, prescription, many different chemical names, different strengths, etc.), they are irritating to your skin, and they come with so many different do's and don'ts... If you really want to get results, they're still the best ingredient to add to your anti-aging routine. To help simplify things a bit, I've come up with a list of my favorite retinoid tips!

Best at home skin exfoliation

Exfoliation is your friend. If you're not exfoliating your skin regularly (or at least semi-regularly), now is the time to start! This is something that everyone, whether you are 15 or 50, should incorporate into their skincare routine. I thought I'd share a few of my favorite products to gently exfoliate my skin to just the right glow!

What exactly does it do? Removing some of the outer layers of the skin will help encourage your skin to create more skin cells (helping your skin to look fresher and younger), evens out your skin's tone and texture as well. The goal is fresh, glowy skin that looks smoother with more even color tone.

All of the active ingredients were my friend (I thought), and while I had some success, overall I didn't really have clear skin until my early 20's when my hormones stopped freaking out, and I was no longer beating it up with so many ingredients. While I still experience the occasional blemish now that I'm in my (late) 30's, I've realized that treating adult acne is a whole different ball game than the blemishes of my teen years. And I've also realized that my teenage game plan of using every product possible was overkill and probably made things worse.

1. Be gentle
As a teen, I used pretty much every acne treatment that I could. Even if I had 1 problem spot, I would apply my spot treatment to my entire face. I used the products in large amounts, multiple times a day. More is more, right? Not exactly.

It turns out that more products, especially when it comes to acne treatment, often results in dryness and irritation. That in turn can actually give you even more blemishes! Start with gentle products and add in active ingredients that won't irritate your skin.

Look for non-irritating spot treatments such as PCA SKIN's Acne Gel, which has 2% Salicylic Acid but is formulated to be used on your entire face or as a spot treatment. It fights current blemishes, prevents new blemishes, and has ingredients to help cut down on oil production throughout the day.

2. Add moisture
If you have acne, then chances are you also have oily skin. And if your skin is oily, then you don't need moisturizer, right? That's just one more thing to clog up your skin.

Actually, no. Oil is not hydration, and avoiding moisturizer because your skin is oily is a mistake. Even just a simple lightweight lotion can add enough hydration to your skin to cut down on oil production, your skin is no longer working so hard to hold on to moisture. Less oil production in turn results in fewer clogged pores and fewer blemishes.

One of my favorite moisturizers in acne prone skin is PCA SKIN's Clearskin, which is a light moisturizer that seems to always know exactly how much hydration my skin needs and not any more. It also works under makeup and has great acne-fighting ingredients!

3. Clear out your pores regularly
As a teen, I loved to use masks on my skin. Clay masks, hydrating masks, and especially peel off masks were great to put on while doing my homework at night.

As an adult it is hard to find the time for intensive treatments like masks or a peel, but the time is definitely well spent! As an adult, I've discovered that keep my pores cleaned out regularly makes a really big difference in how my skin looks! I love to use a mask like PCA SKIN's Purifying Mask, which is a clay mask to draw out impurities in your pores. I use a mask about once a week, but if you don't have time for that you could also have a professional peel every few months. A peel will clear out your pores as well as exfoliate your skin to even out the tone and texture.

4. Search out new ingredients
Everyone knows about benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, but there are other ingredients out there to fight acne, and many of them have anti-aging effects as well. Two of my favorite ingredients to fight both acne and aging are Niacinamide, and Retinoids such as Retinyl Palmitate

Niacinamide is a water-soluble vitamin derived from Niacin (vitamin B3). It is non-irritating and soothing. Niacin will fight acne as well as aging! It decreases oil production, decreases the inflammation caused by P. acnes (the bacteria that causes acne), improves skin barrier function and increases skin's collagen production.

Retinoids are the gold standard of topical treatment for aging, but when it comes to acne they really work! Retinoids will improve skin's texture, smoothing roughness, dyspigmentation and fine wrinkles. When it comes to acne, Retinoids will help to clean out your pores, increase cell turnover and help even out any hyperpigmentation after blemishes.

Both of these ingredients are found in PCA SKIN's Clearskin, making it a great option for those with adult acne who also want to treat aging!

5. Give products a chance to work
All too often, we try out new products and if we don't see the results we hope for immediately, we stop and move on to another product. When it comes to skin care, you should wait at least 6-8 weeks before changing things around. It takes your skin time to see the benefits of the new products. When testing products out for the blog, 8 weeks is the minimum that I'll use a new product before writing a review, and usually I wait 3-4 months.

6. Consistency is key
Along the same lines, you need to use your products every day. It's easy to get lazy and skip a few steps here and there... before you know it you're only washing your face a few times a week and you haven't used your treatments in a week! Rather than just trying to blast away blemishes with products when they pop up, if you use your treatment products consistently every day you'll actually prevent those blemishes from every occurring. Which sounds even better.

7. Get professional help!
While a great skin care routine can dramatically help many skin care issues, there are some cases that need a little more help. Adult acne can include deep, cystic blemishes along the jaw line, and because of that you might need to see a dermatologist.
