Overnight Masks for Hair and Skin: A New Mommy's Beauty Wish Come True!

Overnight Masks for Hair and Skin: A New Mommy's Beauty Wish Come True!

I'm a new mom. Yes, again. I have a 2 month old, and my almost 4 year old, and while I'm still out on Maternity Leave, that changes in about 2 weeks so I'll have even less time on my hands! There are currently only 24 hours in a day, and I have a lot of things I need to squeeze into that time! You can imagine that one of the first things to go were my time consuming beauty rituals. No more mani/pedis, no more facial masks and no more intensive hair treatments. That time is now spent nursing or snuggling my littlest one. (Don't get me wrong, my husband will tell you that this is really no hardship. I will gladly spend an afternoon snuggling on the couch. My skin is suffering for my shift in priorities though!)

Since I can't seem to find extra time during the day, I've been upping my nightly beauty routine (well, for those nights that I do get to do my routine before I fall into bed!)

I've found a few intensive treatments for hair and skin. They do their job while I sleep (or nurse) all night long! Only a short amount of time is needed to apply the product and I wake up prettier. This is something I can definitely fit into my routine!

I'm showcasing my favorites here, but you can find these (and other) products and lower priced counterparts over in my eBay post, Splurge vs Steal: Overnight Masks to Solve All Your Beauty Woes.

Face

With the fluctuating hormones and start of winter, my skin has been dry, dry, and dry! My usual remedy is the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate, a lightweight oil that really seals in a lot of moisture. It's great for skin everywhere (I love it on my hands as well), and I only need a few drops.

When my skin is extra, extra dry, I'll layer on Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask over the Kiehl's. It is a thick and slightly sticky cream and it really brings a lot of hydration to my skin! You can use it as a quick 10 minute treatment, or apply a lighter layer and rub it into your skin for an overnight treatment. When layered over the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery the combination is unbeatable, no more dryness!

Regular exfoliation encourages cell turnover, softens the skin and evens out skin tone. I love using my Clarisonic, but regular use of other gentle exfoliators helps too! I love my Kate Somerville ExfoliKate and I've also been obsessing over the Kiehl's Over-Night Biological Peel. It is a slow release of active ingredients so it is easier to tolerate.

Hair

My hair seems to be doing really well lately. I really think it comes down to 3 things:

1) I splurged on very expensive shampoo before I had the baby. Really, I discovered a few years ago that if I use Kerastase Chroma Riche Shampoo, my hair is healthy, shiny and easy to style. I don't even really need the conditioner/mask that goes with it (I mostly have been using Redken All Soft Conditioner with it). The key for me is this shampoo. I bought it via a sale over at Rue La La, and it pops up every few months.

2) Because of my lack of time, I have been shampooing my hair less. 2-3x/week, and with that goes less heat styling. Instead, lots of dry shampoo.

3) Overnight hair masks! If my hair is starting to get a little frizzy/dry, I've been using either Darshana (my Darshana review) or René Furterer Karité Intense Overnight Nourishing Treatment. Just a little on my hair, roughly mid-shaft and below, is all I need. I use so little that I don't even need to put a towel on my pillow at night, though you could use more. I just wash it out in the morning and the result is softer, healthier looking hair without needing to spend 30 minutes in a hot towel with a mask.

Hands

With a new baby comes a lot of hand washing. A lot of hand washing. Add in the winter weather and yes, it is hard to keep my hands well moisturized! Barielle Intensive Hand Treatment Cream is meant to be used with gloves, but this super moisturizing treatment is just as good without anything on your hands.

These are just the overnight treatments I've been using lately. Check over on eBay for Splurge vs Steal: Overnight Masks to Solve All Your Beauty Woes.

Makeup Wars: The Best Face Masks

Makeup Wars: The Best Face Masks via @15minbeauty

Today for Makeup Wars we're showcasing our favorite face masks, a topic that is right up my alley! I'm a big fan of skin care, and actually, quite a few of these products were featured in my favorite skin care savers post (and the follow up, the best drugstore skin care products).

1. Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate (my Midnight Recovery Review): Ok, yes, this is not a face mask. But I've yet to find a hydrating face mask that works anywhere near as well as this one, so I had to include it in the post! I only need a few drops on my face at night and I'll wake up glowy!

2. L'Oreal Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Glow Renewal Facial Oil: This is the L'Oreal dupe of the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate. The oils are different, but they work the same way, except this one feels a little bit heavier on my skin. Super glowy results!

3. Kiehl's Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque (my original Rare Earth Mask Review): Yes, there are cheaper clay face masks out there (and I'll be recommending one in a moment), but now that I have rosacea and I'm pregnant, I've been reaching for this one over any other. It pulls everything out of my pores, doesn't get that "so tight it hurts" feeling as it dries, and it doesn't irritate my skin. Definitely worth the extra money if your skin is at all sensitive!

4. Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque: Depending on where you get it, this mask is usually in the $3-5 range, which is pretty tough to beat! It does a great job of pulling everything out of your pores, and I used it multiple times a week during my first (rosacea-free) pregnancy to help keep the hormonal blemishes at bay. However, my skin seems extra sensitive during this pregnancy, so this mask can be a bit irritating (hence, I'm using the Kiehl's), but I'm hoping that I'll be able to use this one again after I deliver.

5. Bliss Multi-‘Face’-Eted All-In-One Anti-Aging Clay Mask: This mask was just released by Bliss, and because it isn't pregnancy friendly I'm staring at it longingly on my countertop! It's yet another clay mask (I love cleaning out my pores, can you tell?), but this one has a few anti-aging extras. In particular, it has 10% Glycolic Acid, which really will help to exfoliate your skin and clean out your pores even more. There's also Jojoba Oil to help add moisture and plump up your skin and Kojic Acid to help with discoloration.

6. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Instant Oatmeal Mask (my Instant Oatmeal Mask review): This mask is hydrating and it can be a bit exfoliating (there's oatmeal in it, you can use it like a scrub as you remove it), but mostly it is just really soothing. If my skin is red and irritated at all, this is the mask I reach for. In no time my skin feels more comfortable, it adds some nice hydration and my redness is gone. And did I mention it smells like cookies? It does.

7. Boots No7 Beautiful Skin Hydration Mask: Yes, I know this mask says hydration, and it is hydrating (though not quite as hydrating as a few drops of that Kiehl's Midnight Recovery). But, really this creamy mask is similar in effect to the First Aid Beauty Oatmeal Mask. It adds some moisture and calms down irritation. But, it doesn't smell like cookies.

What are your favorite masks? Do any of them smell like cookies too?

First Aid Beauty Instant Oatmeal Mask: A Cookie For Your Face

First Aid Beauty Instant Oatmeal Mask Review
I'm a big fan of masks. The little extra time for myself (because, obviously, I don't want anyone else to see me with the mask on. I want to be alone) can be a big thing. The 10 or 15 minutes to pamper myself can make a big difference in my day!

An oatmeal mask.... doesn't sound super impressive, does it? Should masks been peeling and full of clay? Something that removes the outer layer of skin to smooth things out and refresh? Does that even sound like a good idea?

An Oatmeal mask really is for soothing out any rough and irritated spots, and bringing down any inflammation. But, I have to tell you, I really feel like this mask also adds a huge amount of moisture to my skin. It makes my skin plump and dewy and just... glowy. When you apply it, it is grainy and you can feel a lot of the oatmeal in it. It feels a bit like a combination between lotion and a ground up oatmeal cookie. It also smells like it. Which makes me want to lick it off of my face. . .

Le Metier de Beaute's Ultra Hydration Eye Mask Duo Review: Fresh and Awake in Under 15 Minutes

Le Metier de Beaute's Ultra Hydration Eye Mask Duo Review
If you're anything like me, when you're tired your under eye area takes the brunt of it. Luckily, hydration seems to really plump everything up and smooth out any creepiness. The key is getting enough moisture into the skin.

Le Metier de Beaute's newest mask is the Ultra Hydration Eye Mask Duo. This is some serious hydration, and LMdB has figured out how to deliver it in under 15 minutes. Without mess. And you don't even need to take your makeup off. For realz.

The mask is a thick seaweed-based gel shaped to perfectly fit under and around the eyes. Immediately after putting it on the skin, it feels cool and soothing. LMdB says that you can leave it on for up to 15 minutes, and they say you can use the mask easily and pretty much anywhere. On an airplane, after the gym, driving in the car. . . you get the idea.

I threw mine on after putting my toddler down for a nap. I probably should have taken off my makeup, but given the on the go motif, I decided to really be on the go and just put them on. It molds to your face and has no trouble staying on. When you're done, simply peel the patches off easily, and there's no residue left behind. My makeup looked perfect underneath, but my skin was definitely softer and really hydrated. I looked much more awake! If I'd been planning to makeup on after the eye mask it would have been very easy, there was no residue left behind.

If you decide to check out Le Metier de Beaute and you're visiting my local counter (Saks in Troy at Somerset), remember to tell them that you read about LMdB on my blog! We're having a contest amongst a few beauty bloggers, and letting them know you read about it on my blog would be great!

A Day at the Counter with Le Métier de Beauté: Yes, A Mask and Peel on the Floor of Neimans

So, Le Métier de Beauté is one of those epic, super high end brands that I love to oogle over, but have never really made an effort to get to know. I figured they must be horribly over priced and not worthwhile, right?? Right?? Well....

Recently I had the chance to visit one of their counters (my friend Pam came along), where I was pampered with their newest Mask and Peel set.

The first part of the set is the peel. The tube has a brush on it, you turn the brush to let you squeeze out the product. As you brush it on you'll feel that it is mildly tingly, but it doesn't hurt at all. You can leave it on up to 5 minutes, but if you want less exfoliation rinse it off sooner. We left it on my skin for the full 5 minutes (and I have rosacea) and there was no redness, irritation or other issues.

The second step is the mask, which feels like a thick cream, though slightly sticky. It feels a bit cool and just...soothing. It starts white and dries to a light blue over about 10-15 minutes. You can take it off at any point, though to get the full benefit you should wait until it is dry. It feels comfortable when it dries, and it really moves with you as you do anything. When was the last time a mask let you actually talk? And didn't hurt when it dried? Yeah, pretty much never. It peels off pretty easily.

Once the mask is off, you reveal what Venus (the product rep I was working with at Neimans) called the "Cinderella Effect." Seriously, Pam made her stop peeling the mask off of me to pet my skin. I wish I had taped Pam's reaction to the reveal, because she was cracking me up! There was a lot of gasping and "shut up!"

My skin really looked amazing, and you can see that a bit in the picture above. That's my skin with nothing on it as Venus was starting the amazing smoky eye she gave me just a few minutes later. My skin was soft, my pores were definitely smaller and overall my tone was much more even. The effects lasted for over a week!

Once my treatment was over, Venus did an amazing makeover on me! I had a beautiful brown smoky eye with depth... seriously, it was amazing. Unfortunately, this is the best pic we got of it.

What she used:
Peau Vierge Face Shade #2 (though, I could have used #1)
Peau Vierge Concealer (I bought this! It made all of my undereye circles disappear in person, though you can still see them a bit in this pic. Yes, I was on call the night before.)
Sun Kissed Bronzer
Echo Blush
5 different eye shadows
Aubergine Mascara
Black Liquid Liner
Nudite Lip Liner
Ibiza Lip Gloss (I bought this as well, it's that perfect in between nude/pinky shade)

Hydropeptide Polish & Plump Peel and Peptide Mask: At Home Pampering the Four Seasons Way

Hydropeptide Polish & Plump Peel and Peptide Mask Review, at home facial mask peel

I haven't really discussed it on the site, and it's likely that my readers haven't noticed a difference, but my life has become a bit insane over the past 2-3 months. I'm working quite a bit more than I was in the past, but there's also other stuff going on and so I have a lot less time for the blog and even less for myself. I haven't had a hair cut in I don't know how long.... and I'm not even going to mention my eye brows. They're currently less than stellar. Hopefully I'll make it over to my esthetician sometime soon!

So, the point of all that is that my life is busy, I'm stressed and my skin sometimes shows it. I need "me" time desperately, but I'm not likely to get much more than about 20-30 minutes.

So, I was really excited about these products from Hydropeptide. While both of them are fast treatments on their own, when combined they make me super glowy and smooth in just under 20 minutes! These products are so amazing that they're now being used at many Four Seasons Spas. (If you haven't experienced a Four Seasons Spa I recommend you do so, pronto. My fave is Hualalai.)

So, while I'm stressed and don't have much time, you can bet I've "somehow" managed to squeeze in a few rounds of these 2 products over the last 2 weeks.

Hydropeptide Polish & Plump Peel and Peptide Mask Review, at home facial mask peel

Polish and Plump Peel
Yes, I know it says peel the scary thing a lot of people don't want to touch for at home use. Really, just think of it as a slightly deeper (but gentle) exfoliation. This system is 2 products that work together. First, you use step 1, which feels just like a regular sugar scrub. The grit is a bit smaller than typical sugar scrub grit, but it feels very similar and there is a lot of grit, which I love. The scrub smells ahhhmazing, very citrus. It is a natural citrus scent (more lemon than orange or lime to me), not chemical at all.

I use about the size of a lima bean and just scrub it around my face for about 3 minutes, concentrating around my t-zone. Do this for a few minutes, but don't rinse it off yet! Now you pull out the 2nd phase, which is a clear gel-serum thing in a tall airless pump. You only need 1 pump worth, don't go crazy! Just smear this around over the layer of scrub that you have on. I rub it in just a little, and you'll notice that you get a light foaming action. Leave it on for 1-2 minutes and then rinse off.

It makes my skin super soft and glowy, but there's absolutely no irritation, redness or peeling. I love that it only takes a few minutes.

Instant Peptide Mask
While it looks like a basic clay mask, it really isn't. This mask has a consistency that is midway between a clay mask and a thick moisturizing cream, though it still has a bit of that mud mask smell. When I apply it I do feel a cool, not quite tingly feeling. It feels similar to menthol, though not as strong (likely the Menthyl Lactate, a cooling agent).

I used a very light layer, and it didn't fully dry. I didn't have any uncomfortable drying/tightening, instead it just was still creamy and on top of my skin. It does need a little cleanser to fully remove, but what's underneath is interesting. It seems to exfoliate (it does have some chemical exfoliators in there), clean out your pores like a clay mask and it hydrates you. Which means you're all kinds of glowy in only 10 minutes!

Michael Todd Pumpkin Facial Mask Review: So Yummy You'll Want to Eat It

Michael Todd Pumpkin Nutrient- Rich Facial Mask Review
Ooooh, a pumpkin mask. I'm a big fan of pumpkin (yes, I fully admit to being one of the people that stalks Starbucks every fall) I'm also a big fan of smooth skin, especially when I can get it fast. And smell yummy pumpkin while treating my skin.

So, yes, it does look like someone basically just mixed up some canned pumpkin and maybe some body lotion. It smells just like fresh (?) canned pumpkin, and when you smear it on to your face it looks like it too. There are a few slightly bigger chunks in it, but they're soft and didn't bother me. They just made me feel super pumpkin-ish.

This mask doesn't dry on your skin like a clay mask, but it did tingle slightly for me. It wasn't unpleasant, didn't hurt, but there was definitely a little bit of a tingle. It rinsed off easily though I did wash my face afterwards to ensure there wasn't any residual mask left on my skin.

This mask is basically a light chemical peel, the pumpkin has been blended with Glycolic Acid. The Pumpkin also contains enzymes and helps to lightly exfoliate the skin. Remember that chemical exfoliating does make your skin more susceptible to the sun, so be sure to wear your broad spectrum sunscreen!

After washing it off my skin is smoother and I feel a bit glowy. I used it a few times a week for about 3 weeks and over time it helped to clear out my pores. Smells yummy and works well (without any skin irritation?) Count me in!

Somme Institute Boost Mask Review

Somme Institute Boost Mask Review

I'm a mask girl. If I had time, I'd use 2 or 3 masks a day. A day people! Love them! I really only get to use a mask about 2 or 3 times a week if I'm having a great week, more like once a week if things are at their typical level of busy. So, I want my mask to do a lot. Help me clean out some of my back up, gunky pores. Leave my skin smooth and glowing because it was a bit more exfoliated than usual. If there's a way to get a bit more hydration even, then I'd love that. Do it all in 10 minutes or less!

Boost is interesting. This is a light tannish mask and I can't describe the scent at all. There is one, it isn't unpleasant, I just can't think of how to explain it. It's a bit earthy (probably the Kaolin Clay), a little herbal and sweet... I'm not too sure beyond that.

It feels like a moisturizer that has been mixed 50/50 with a clay mask. It has that slightly gritty mud feel, but is somehow a tad creamy to me? Once applied to your skin it starts to warm up, and oooooh.... it feels so good! It isn't hot, just warm enough to feel really great. I had some faint (pleasant) tingling at about 3-4 minutes in, but it never hurt. The mask had dried slightly on the surface when I washed it off at about 10 minutes. It rinsed off pretty easily and I used the Nourishing Cleanser to remove any excess.

After use my skin was smooth and glowing! I was a bit hydrated, but still needed to use a moisturizer. The mask contains that MDT5 with all of the vitamins to penetrate deeply in to your skin, but also has Kaolin Clay (to suck stuff out of pores), a retinoid, peptide and even pumpkin enzymes (read: hydroxy acids) all to give you an anti-aging boost.

Note that the presence of vitamin A in the MDT5 technology means that this entire line should be avoided in pregnancy.

Algenist Firming & Lifting Intensive Mask Review

Remember back when I shared the Algenist Skincare hitting Sephora info with you? And I promised that I'd be trying it out soon? Well, I did! And now it is time to share.

I didn't try out the every day serums and creams (I only have one face! There are so many items to try out lately). Instead I tried out the Firming & Lifting Intensive Mask. This product does have the same active ingredients as the rest of the line. So, the Alguronic Acid that the line is known for is present. You'll find peptides and Green Tea acts as an anti-oxidant. Keep in mind that these ingredients fight aging over the long term, so it isn't likely that you'll see big anti-aging benefits with just a few mask treatments. Think of the mask as a little intensive burst of those ingredients on occasion.

What you will notice is that this mask is nicely hydrating and the plumping/glowing effect of that moisture definitely is a nice temporary pick me up!

This mask is light and feels a bit like a thick lotion as it is applied. It dries slightly during the 5-10 minute treatment time, but it never becomes tight and uncomfortable. The mask is easy to wash off. The end result is that nice hydrated feeling and a pretty glow.

Repechage One Minute Clarifying Mask Review: Suck Stuff Out of Your Pores Super Fast!

Repechage One Minute Clarifying Mask Review
Obviously I'm a girl without much time. I want things to work and work fast. But a mud mask that works in a minute?? That seems a bit too much to ask.

But, here I am today, reviewing a 1 minute mud mask. And yes, it really does work. This stuff does a great job of minimizing pores, sucking up excess oil and just in general tightening everything up. It has a minty/herbal scent and has that classic grainy/muddy consistency. I apply a light layer all over, let it hang out for a minute or two (I love to use this while running around the bathroom doing things just before hopping in the shower) and then wash it off. It is a little bit like a scrub when being removed since it is still a bit grainy, so I like to rub it around a tad. Note, the mask doesn't dry at all.

Once the treatment is over you'll see that it actually did work in that tiny amount of time. Perfect for a girl on the run like me!

Pore Strip Your Face: The At Home Gelatin Facial

Pore Strip your face with a Gelatin facial mask and clean out your pores
I did something brave last week. I pore stripped my face. The entire thing. Yes. No, I did not go crazy and buy my local Walmart out of Bioré products. Instead, I bought a $1.36 box of unflavored gelatin and used up half of it. Truly.

I found this via Pinterest (love it!), and I knew as soon as I saw it, I would have to try it! The idea came from Petite Elefant (pinned here). I was the girl in college with the nose strips on her forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. I had to try this. There was no choice.

I should note that I tried this out immediately after my morning shower, so I knew all the stuff clogging my pores had been nicely loosened up by my shower and I was more likely to yank some of it out.

So, first, I somewhat followed the directions over at Petite Elefant. In that I used disposable items and unflavored gelatin with milk. Not so much in that I forgot how much to use, so when I combined ingredients I used 2 packets of gelatin and about 1-2 tablespoons of milk and when mixed up mine was about the consistency of a fruit on the bottom yogurt once mixed up. There is no other way to describe it, I created Yoplait.

Then I put it in the microwave. I thought it was 30 seconds (actually, 10 seconds is recommended), but I pulled it out about 25 seconds in once it started bubbling. Oops! It turns out this stuff cools down rapidly and as it cools it sets up. So, this gave me about 2 minutes of stand around and talk to my husband while stirring, then I realized it was getting stringy and thick quickly so I ran up to the bathroom to put it on.

Application was pretty easy. I used a plastic picnic knife, it was fine if you don't have the recommended popsicle stick. You don't want a thin or a thick layer, really it should be somewhat in between. Once it dries you'll be peeling this stuff off. Too thick is goopy and hard to peel in 1 piece, too thin and it will break off every where. Avoid your eye brows and too close to your eyes. Really.

About 10-15 minutes later, things will definitely start to tighten up as it dries. This is when you want to remove. I simply opened my mouth to start tearing into it, and then I started peeling. It isn't quite as satisfying as a Bioré, since it is harder to see the grossness you've just pulled out of your skin. But, you'll notice right away that your pores are smaller and black heads are gone.

As you pull the mask off it does exfoliate (aka- pull off skin). I didn't notice redness, but my skin was definitely sensitive that day. You should do this on a day that you'll be able to baby your skin with added moisture and maybe staying home sans makeup. Be sure to wear your sunscreen as well! I swear this stuff also pulled off hair, so any little baby fuzz you have is likely to be pretty reduced by using this mask.

However, a word of caution! I was too close to my eyebrows when I applied. I didn't think this would matter. The first removal swatch I did near them did pull up a few eyebrows (small bald spot! I have had to fill it in with an eyebrow pencil, though it is now filling in). So, be careful! After that I took a little warm water with my fingers, wet the gelatin on my brows, and once it loosened up I gently scraped it off with fingernails. So, problem averted.

The first day my skin was sensitive to the touch, though I didn't look irritated and my skin wasn't red. Instead, it felt very soft and my pores were immediately much smaller in appearance. The best results were actually a few days later, I swear my pores looked smaller and smaller! The usual gunk I have clogging them was gone and despite a time I should have been breaking out (hmmm....) my skin was perfect!

Have you tried this? I'm definitely going to be doing it again, though I'll probably just direct it at my t-zone rather than my entire face. And I likely will only microwave for 15-20 seconds. I think this might be an every other week or so thing for me for now on.

Update!
When I wrote this post I had a cold and couldn't smell it, but yes, it really does smell horrible (read below, this seemed to make a few people VERY ANGRY WITH ME. You've been warned! Sorry!)

There are quite a few great tips in the comments to help with the smell including using soy milk, lemon juice, adding a few drops of essential oil to the mix.

Also, to prevent your eye brows from being pulled out, coat them with vaseline first!

Kanebo Sensai Silk Peeling Mask

Kanebo Sensai Silk Peeling Mask, fast, quick, review
Obviously with a site name "15 Minute Beauty Fanatic" you know that I love beauty products that are fast. But, I want them to work and work well also. Not to mention that I want them to work even faster now that I'm a mom! My time alone is limited and precious, so you can bet that I'm multi-tasking and taking short cuts like never before!

One of my favorite new (and super fast) products is Sensai's Silk Peeling Mask. This product takes a whopping one minute to help gently exfoliate your skin while it hydrates. Really. It is a very thick cream (it smells like lotion to me), 2 to 3 pumps is all you need. Apply over wet skin, gently massaging to make it dissolve, forming a sheer white layer over skin. Let it sit for a minute, and then simply rinse off. It rinses off pretty easily, and when rinsing off I do rub gently because there is a little light grit in the formula.
