Top 10 Tuesday: Beauty Items in my Purse

Product Sent for Review

Best beauty items to carry in your purse

When the Top 10 beauty bloggers decided to feature a list of the top 10 items we keep in our purse, I admit I was a bit worried. It's not unusual for me to have a situation like this going on. About 25 lippies in my purse. And yes, that is exactly what was going on when I dug through my purse to write this post (I'm writing this on Monday afternoon). Luckily I did find a few other items in the mix!

I have a giant purse, which is a bit like a Mary Poppins bag. I often use it as a diaper bag as well, and it carts a lot of stuff to and from work. I could probably use it as a carry on for travel if I wanted to as well (yes, it is that big).

To help keep absolute essentials from getting lost, I keep things that I always have in my purse in this cosmetic bag, it is a Clarins Feed promo bag from a few years ago. It's no longer available, but they did just bring out a new Clarins Feed 25 bag if you're interested in getting a great bag, fun products and donating to a great cause!

Inside of that bag, I always have these essentials:

1. Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets: They remove oil without messing up my makeup or leaving behind strange powder.

2. Nivea Extended Moisture Hand Cream: This is super hydrating, so it is perfect for midwest winters.

3. MAC Kissable Lipcolour in Woo Me: This is my perfect balance of pink and nude. Since it is so neutral for me, I keep it in my bag so I'll always have a perfect lippie. It isn't currently available, but it comes back every 12-18 months and I buy a new one.

4. Nivea Creme: Even thicker and more hydrating than the hand cream! I tend to use this when my cuticles are really bothering me (no matter what I do, they dry out when I travel), and it works great on my eczema that I might have.

5. CoverGirl Powder: Of course, this one is no longer available on-line, but it is the Fresh Complexion Pocket Powder. I like that it is a little smaller than other powders and is pretty finely milled. Great for mid-afternoon touchups.

The rest of my lippies tend to just collect at the bottom of my purse. It's a big collection of different formulas, colors and they run from $1 Burt's Bees lip balms to my YSL lipstick (which I'm still trying to love. But I don't.)

Here are the 5 from that collection that I use the most often.

6. L'Oreal Colour Riche Balm in 946 Provence Romance

7. Too Faced Glamour Gloss in Pillow Talk

8. L'Oreal Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain in Lilac Ever After

9. Too Faced Lipstick in Honey Bear

10. Osmia Organics Lip Luster

Finally, an added, bonus, 11th item! This is the lippie that I was searching for so often at the bottom of my purse that it now just lives in the center console of my car. It is CoverGirl Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm in C U L8R 210.

Long Lasting Lip Color: Julia's Lip Tint

Product Sent for Review

Julia's Lip Tint Review
So, obviously lip tints are nothing new. I remember ordering Benetint from the paper Benefit Cosmetics catalog in college, I sent in a check and waited a few anxious weeks. Once it came in the mail, I loved it, but... I also didn't. I loved the idea of a liquid stain that worked on my lips and cheeks and could last for hours, but the red color was just not quite right for my fair skin. When they came out with other shades they were a bit better, but still not quite right. Today, I don't own any of those Benefit products.

When the nice people from Julia's Lip Tint asked if they could send me some of their tints to try out, I had high hopes! Their website listed many shades, most of which were much more subtle than Benetint, and I thought that they'd work much better with my skin tone.

Too Faced Honey Bear: My Current Favorite Neutral Lippie

Too Faced Honey Bear
You know how NARS Orgasm blush is that perfect peachy-pink that works on pretty much everyone? (But I fully admit that many of the companion products are too light and frosty to work for many people. Like that lip gloss.)

Anyways, this is the Orgasm of lip sticks (pun intended? Not intended?)

Too Faced Honey Bear Lippie
Too Faced claims that Honey Bear is a "toasted mauve" lipstick, but I honestly don't even know what that would look like. It's pretty much the perfect neutral lippie for me. What do you think? What's your perfect neutral?

NARS Satin Lip Pencil: The Highly Pigmented Lippie You'll NEED This Summer

NARS Satin Lip Pencil
NARS recently released a new collection of "lip pencils", and they sent me two for review. (I've had them for a while, you may have seen them on my Instagram, where I posted some pictures I took about 2 minutes after they arrived on my doorstep.)

Ever since bold and bright lippies took center stage last summer I've been loving bright pink and red lips. I was so excited to try out 2 of the brightest options that NARS is offering in this formula.

The lip pencils apply amazingly well. They feel like a combination of a balm and a lipstick, but they are very, very pigmented. One swipe and you're pretty much done. And they last for pretty much forever. Lodhi and Rikugien are next on my list of colors to try.

Anastasia Kisses on my Lips Set: Gloss or Stain... Or... What?

Anastasia Kisses on my Lips Set
So, I have to admit that I've had the Anastasia Kisses on my Lips set for a few weeks, and I haven't fully decided exactly what it is. Really. It is a gloss set? But...some of them are "hypercolor" which means that they also stain your lips a bit, though since the reaction is based on your own lips, the color will be different for each person. I've elected to show just swatches here, but you'll see these colors popping up quite a bit in upcoming looks since I just... can't... stop using them!

Can you see why I can't stop using them? So pretty! These glosses aren't sticky, their colors are neutral and pretty. They work with pretty much everything. The applicator is a rubbery plastic spatula, which I usually don't like, but these glosses seem a little bit thicker to me than others, so this applicator works much better than a brush or sponge would.

The only thing is that I do wish they lasted a bit longer. On me they're good for about 2-3 hours (though obviously the staining, which is generally a bit darker than my natural lip color, lasts for a bit longer. More like 4-5 hours). I keep grabbing these out of my lippie drawer over and over!

A Month of Red Lips: BH Cosmetics Classy Gal Lipgloss

BH Cosmetics Classy Gal Lipgloss Swatch
Classy Gal is a mostly red lipgloss with just a *touch* of pink in it. The gloss is well pigmented and can almost be used as a stain, though I did find it to be slightly sticky. I loved that it had just a touch of shimmer in it as well.

I decided to pucker up in this picture a'la my friend, Pink Sith. Honestly, I know I have skinny lips, and sometimes lippies look funny on me, but whenever I see her puckering up I really want to master the perfect pucker for my pictures. I finally got one right!

A Month of Red Lips: MAC Eden Rouge Lipstick

MAC Eden Rouge Lipstick Swatch
The MAC Mattenes are usually very pigmented, last for about 5-6 hours (at least for me) and are... well... dry. On me they often look like I could use a good balm. This one really shocked me, it somehow wasn't super matte? It felt a tad hydrating? Definitely a good thing!

A Month of Red Lips: TIGI Luxury Lipstick

TIGI Luxury Lipstick swatch
Luxury is a little bit lighter and pinker than what I expected based on how the lipstick looked in the tube. But, it is very pigmented, pretty hydrating for a lipstick and it lasted for about 3 hours without needing to be retouched.

A Month of Red Lips: L'Oreal Refined Ruby

L'Oreal Refined Ruby Lipstick Swatch
So, my tube of Refined Ruby was a little worse for wear after the cap fell off while it was coming to my house. Luckily most of it was intact, because this is a beautiful color! Well pigmented and like other L'Oreal lipsticks, it is hydrating and lasts for hours.

A Month of Red Lips: Sonia Kashuk Classic Red

Sonia Kashuk Classic Red Lipstick
Sonia Kashuk's Classic Red lipstick really is just that- a classic red that you can't go wrong with. It applies very smoothly, though I did think it was a tad dry (easily overcome by applying some balm first).

A Month of Red Lips: Essence Red Carpet Lipstick

Essence Red Carpet Lipstick
With a name like Red Carpet I had expected a true red lipstick. But it wasn't quite red in the tube, and once applied I'd definitely say there's a bit of... what looks like coral? In this red? And some pink?

It isn't red, but it is definitely pretty! It can be a bit translucent, so I have more applied here, but I think it makes it pretty wearable for those afraid of red lips.

A Month of Red Lips: L'Oreal Blazing Sangria

This is an interesting red. It is a bit red, a bit coral... but it still works on my cool toned skin. Love that!

A very hydrating and translucent color, this shad is soft and easy to wear. Perfect for those that are afraid of red lips.

A Month of Red Lips: Stila Beso

Stila Beso
So, a few days ago I shared my favorite red lip gloss, and I have to admit that it was really hard to pass up featuring Beso instead. To me, this is a more "grown up" version of the L'Oreal gloss. If you need a more grown up version of something that is already a red lippie.

This is a slightly darker true red. The formula is interesting since it is billed as a "liquid lipstick" and it really is an accurate description. It's not a gloss, it's a bit thicker and drier. Yes, like someone stuck a lipstick in a blender and added just enough liquid to make it easy to spread around. So, it is really pigmented, not at all sticky and there's no flavor to it. It applies in basically 1 swipe, perfectly lined, fully pigmented, and no touchups needed. I kid you not. It lasts about 6 hours on me, and yes, it does stain my lips a bit, so when it starts to wear off that is a bit less noticeable.

I've been reaching for this a lot lately. I think it's my red of choice as fall rolls into the midwest.

A Month of Red Lips: Essence Kiss Kiss Kiss

This is kind of an interesting gloss. First, it looks very red in the tube, but comes out as a very pretty pink on the lips. I found it to be very wearable, though make sure you get an even coating, it can look a little uneven otherwise. It isn't sticky and feels pretty hydrating, which I liked a lot.

I wasn't in love with the applicator. The shape was hard for me to work with, I really like to use the side a lot when applying gloss and I just couldn't get the hang of this one. I think I probably needed to go further down the side to take advantage of the shape a bit more.

This gloss does last for a good 4-6 hours, which I found pretty impressive!

Month of Red Lips: By Terry Red Ceremony

Month of Red Lips: By Terry Red Ceremony
I was a bit surprised by this red lippie! Red Ceremony looks a bit like a darker brick red in the tube, when I swatched it on my arm it looked a little berry colored and didn't apply very smoothly. But...

When it applies, it is super pigmented and smooth. It feels a bit... hydrating. And silky. The color just applies perfectly and looks amazing. It is more of a dark true red, and the shine is amazing for a lipstick. It lasts for about 4 hours before needing touch up.

It also has a lot of little details that you expect from such a high end lippie. The By Terry writing on the site (it actually say "Terrybly" which is the name of the lipstick product), the magnetic closure that snaps the lippie closed and the heftiness of the tube. All of those are great details that I loved.
