Back in March, I shared my favorite drugstore hair products, and I was pretty surprised by how many I really do use! I think of myself as a hair product snob, I often spend a lot of money on my hair, and I don't feel remotely guilty about it. But, I've slowly collected quite a few drugstore price point hair products, and I reach for them all the time. Often instead of much more expensive products!

One of my absolute favorites is this dry shampoo from Herbal Essences, which I felt deserved a full blog post in addition to the mention in the drugstore round up. Here's what I said about it in the post:

I just got this dry shampoo, and I'm obsessed! Expect a full post on just this dry shampoo soon! It does a great job of soaking up oils, it does add a lot of volume, and it doesn't look powdery at all on my hair. But the best part really is the smell! Hands down, this is the best dry shampoo ever. Ever. I have no idea what Mosa Mint is, but to me this dry shampoo has some peach scent, more like a sophisticated white peach. I love that!

Since that post, I've finished one can of the dry shampoo and I'm on to a second one. Yes, I repurchased it. Actually, I bought 2 cans, 1 to use and 1 as a back up. I do not want to run out!

After using this dry shampoo for a while, I still love it. Yes, it smells absolutely amazing. No, it doesn't turn my hair white, even when I use a lot of it. It does soak up quite a bit of oil, but my hair still has nice shine. Just, not too much shine from being oily, if that makes sense.

One thing that I really have noticed is that this is a volumizing dry shampoo. This dry shampoo adds more texture and "grit" than others, adding a lot of volume to my hair, which I love because I sometimes have issue keeping styles in my hair due to how silky it can be. That also means that you can really feel the product in there, but really.... if you've styled your hair you shouldn't be running your fingers through it all the time anyways!

Cold Weather Beauty Swap Outs with Dove: Prepping for Colder Weather

When the weather starts getting colder and the humidity plummets, there are a few swap outs that I make in my beauty routine that make a big difference! I love dry shampoo year round to stretch the time I go in between washing my hair, but that becomes even more important during the winter! If I wash my hair too frequently in the winter, it becomes dry and staticky, with fly aways that are hard to control. I've also found that my scalp becomes dry and itchy if I wash every day.

So, I use dry shampoo to stretch to about 3-4 days (instead of 2-3 days) in between hair washings. I love using dry shampoo at night before bed, instead of in the morning. I can apply a bit more product, it soaks up oil even better, and there's no whiteness or dullness issues! This dry shampoo from Dove smells great and also adds some great volume to my hair.

2. Moisturizing Antiperspirant: Dove Advanced Care Antiperspirant
Strange but true, even your underarms need to be a little pampered. Dry skin can happen everywhere, and if I get dry under my arms, well, I get itchy. Instead of applying moisturizer under my arms, I use an antiperspirant that also helps to hydrate my skin. Multi-tasking!

3. Super Hydrating Body Wash: Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash
Once the weather turns cold, it's a good idea to conserve any and all moisture you can in your skin. One of my favorite swap outs is to go for a super moisturizing body wash. This is one of my favorites! It is very gentle but still gets my skin clean, and it leaves my skin very soft and moisturized.

My New Favorite Dry Shampoo: MoroccanOil's Dry Shampoo

I've made no secret of the fact that I really love (love) Dry Shampoo. It's a huge time saver, can add volume to flat hair, add texture to hair that is too slippery to "grab", and makes my go-to pony tail actually look.... cute! Until now my favorite has been the Klorane Nettle Dry Shampoo, which is formulated for oily hair, so it does a better than average job at mopping up excess oil.

Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo is all kinds of amazing. It does go on white when you initially spray it (what?? Doesn't it say "Dark Tones" on that can??), but.... yes, it changes! Leave it in for a minute or two (or more) and then come back and move your fingers through your hair, like you are shampooing. (You can read more about it in my how to use dry shampoo post.) It turns out that the Dark Tones is made with ultra-fine rice starches, and as you massage it in to your hair, it breaks down and completely disappears. And actually absorbs a lot more oil, and adds more volume than any other dry shampoo I've used. As an added bonus, it doesn't look powdery in your hair at all. It even contains a UV protectant to protect your color. The Light Tones has a super soft violet tint to it to help combat brassiness as well.

The Perfect Bend Made Foolproof: Wavy Hair Tutorial With The Kardashians

If you've been on Instagram or Pinterest in the last few years, chances are you've seen the perfect wavy hair. Yes, it's the perfect wavy hair that I've been lusting after. Back in January I had my hair cut for the first time in months, and I had layers cut that were "weightless" rather than more traditional. Meaning, they are there, but because I've had them thinned out quite a bit, you don't seen an obvious line. Perfect for postpartum hair loss I thought. And also for getting the look of those waves I've been really yearning for!

Since that hair cut I've perfected curling my hair with a curling iron to get a very pretty look, but it isn't that perfect wavy bend that I want. Yes, that's right, I don't really want a curl. I want a bend. And it is really hard to get the perfect bend, unless you're a celeb hair stylist.

I've found a way to get the look I've wanted, and it is because of the Kardashians. I know, I know. But those girls have some amazing hair! And they teamed up with Chi/Farouk to create their line, so you know they had some amazing help. And it turns out that this is basically foolproof.




To get the look, this is as much about hair prep with products as it is about using the right heat tool.

I start with damp hair. I apply a bit of the Black Seed Dry Oil, which will smooth frizz and protect my hair from heat damage while styling. I also spray the Surf Shake Spray throughout. I've found that the added texture from a salt spray helps my hair to hold curl much longer. Then I dry my hair straight.




Once my hair is dry (left), you can see that my hair still is a bit frizzy at the ends. A big part of this look working is to have ends that are smoothed. So, I start using the 3 in 1 tool as a flat iron. I just grab random sections and am not very obsessive about it. I smooth the entire hair shaft on the upper layers of my hair, but just concentrate on the ends for the lower layers.




After my hair has been flat ironed, it is time to start waving/bending! Though, I have to say that the flat iron part of this tool worked really quickly and my hair required less heat than usual (only 380 instead of 400).


Here's where the secret is. The 3 in 1 tool has plates on the outside that heat up to work like a curling wand. Except that it isn't really a curling wand. It's oval, and there's a spot where the 2 sides meet without a heated plate. So, not all of your hair gets heated. The result is that instead of an even, perfect curl, you get a bend. A bend.

I section my hair using a clip (these Croc Clips are my favorite), and then start curling! I use randomly sized sections of hair, and wrap it around the outside of the 3 in 1. I sometimes curl toward my face (as seen in this look) and sometimes away from my face. The point is to have random waves/bends, and varying the size and direction helps a lot. I always curl away from my face right next to it, the results are prettier that way.

When wrapping my hair, I generally leave a few inches free at the roots, and I don't wrap the last inch or two of my hair. While the hair is touching the iron, I don't have it wrapped very tightly. I hold this curl for about 8 to 10 seconds before gently releasing. While I'm holding my hair onto the iron, I twist the iron slowly, just rotating it about 1/4 turn in either direction.

The result is a bit random, and while slightly curled, it really is the perfect wavy bend instead of an actual curl! To keep it in place all day I spray it with the hair spray and scrunch it up just a tiny bit as the spray is drying.



One of my favorite things about this hairstyle is that it can last for a few days and easily survives even super windy days (check out this picture after I'd been out running errands in 30 mph winds). To revive this hair, a few drops of the hair oil are all that I need! I also add a bit of dry shampoo at my roots for second day hair, it takes care of any greasy areas and adds volume without looking powdery or white.

10 Mommy Beauty Must Have Products

Even though I knew that I'd be sacrificing a lot of "me" time when I had my second baby this fall, I admit I still was overestimating how much time I'd have each day for a beauty routine. Oh, how nature ensures that mommies will forget many of the details of the first few months after birth...

Now that I've returned to work and things have settled into more of a routine, I thought I'd share a few of my quick routine favorites!


1. BB Cream
I've always been a fan of BB Creams, I talk about them on here quite a bit, but it seems to be even more important as a new mom! There were quite a few days that I was lucky to be able to brush my teeth and wash my face. Quickly rubbing on a moisturizer on my way out of the bathroom did a lot of extra jobs if it wasn't just a moisturizer, but was a BB Cream. Depending on which formulation you chose, this one step can be your moisturizer, an anti-aging cream, daily sunscreen, can fight hyperpigmentation and offer some much needed coverage for your sleep deprived face!

2 &3. Corrector and Concealer
If I have time, my next step is always covering up my undereye circles! If you are lucky and don't have much of a circle you can get away with just using a concealer (my favorite undereye concealers are here), but if you have some discoloration it is best to layer that concealer over a corrector (how to use a color corrector). In general, apply the corrector only on the area of discoloration, concealer should go over it, as well as in an inverted triangle under the eyes, over the inner eye, and around the nose (see the chart).

4. Highlighter
Yes, highlighter is next. And there's one that I'm reaching for now, thanks to this Refinery29 review. Yes, the RMS Living Luminizer is really worth the $38 price tag. And then some. I apply it with a quick fingertip pat to the areas show in the picture. It catches just the right amount of light and really makes me look more awake. Totally worth it.

I bought mine at J. Crew because it counts for those storewide sales and you can get 20-40% off on it, but it is often sold out. It's also at Birchbox and DermStore.

Also try ELF Shimmering Facial Whip (in Lilac Petal, one of my favorite ELF products) as a lower price ($38 vs $1??) alternative. The ELF is definitely more shimmering, I would cut it with a little concealer or moisturizer. You need about half the shimmer of the ELF to approximate the RMS Living Luminizer.


5. All in One Color
If there's time for any color, I go right for blush first. Being up at night really washes me out the next day, and a little bit of blush makes a big difference! I have found that a cream product like NARS The Multiple in Orgasm gives me just the right glow and only takes a few moments. I brush the stick onto my cheeks, then blend with fingertips. The same color can be used on my lids and even on my lips with just my fingers.

6. Lash Curler and Mascara
A good mascara opens my eyes, really making me look awake. Mascara without curling your lashes first is just a waste of time in my opinion.

7. Easy Lippie

8. Dry Shampoo
What would a mommy beauty post be without dry shampoo?? Yes, washing, drying and then styling hair can take a lot of time, especially if you have a ton of hair like I do! I stretch out the time between stylings with dry shampoo. In the past I've used it in the mornings, but even with a good brushing it can still make my hair look a little matte.

So, my new trick is to use it before bed. Yes, I spray a ton of dry shampoo willy nilly throughout my hair before bed. I don't even bother brushing. Just spray and ignore the white powder. When I wake up my hair is volumized, still shiny, but doesn't look matte or greasy. It just looks kind of perfect!

9. Makeup Remover Wipes
I'm gone back and forth on makeup remover wipes. They're convenient, but they don't remove everything. The wipes can be irritating, and that can sometimes be just as bad as not removing everything. But, I admit I repurchased some wipes for postpartum and there are some nights that I can barely get myself to use them, I'm so tired! I no longer concentrate on getting off all of my eye makeup (if I have any on), instead I just try to get stuff off of my skin and leave it at that.

10. Great Moisturizing Cream
There's a lot of hand washing associated with having a new baby, and that really does a number on my hands. They are dry, cracked and painful unless I apply moisturizer of some sort after pretty much every hand washing! Shifting hormones also masses with the skin on my body, so I transition over to a more moisturizing product for my body as well.

Can Waves Stretch Your Hair For 2 More Days?

As I've been growing out this long bob, my hair has gotten heavy. Really heavy. Some of that is probably the pregnancy hormones, but I do need to add in a few layers and such. Combined with the tired/laziness of the end of my pregnancy, the result has mostly been boring ponytails.

I'm determined to step it up a little, and if stepping it up a bit means that I can also stretch a shampoo a few more days.... well that's just even better for after I have the baby! On Day 1 I can wear my hair just blown out. Day 2 is long and wavy (left above), and Day 3 is a big, voluminous pony.



What I Used:

1. Prep Your Hair
A really big part of this look is properly prepping your hair. This works best on second day hair (dirty hair always has more texture and "grab" for me), but I need to get a good base in place the day before when I wash.

I always, always, always use a good heat protectant on my hair after I wash it. Even if I'm just planning to let my hair air dry that day, there's a decent chance I'll be heat styling the next day. I'm not a fan of fried hair, been there, done that. The Ion Heat Protection Spray is one of my favorites because you can't even tell that it is in your hair! A few sprays throughout my hair are all I need, then I just comb it through.

Next, I like to use Ion Styling Mousse to help my hair hold on to the curls. I really believe that mousse is the secret to all day curls! If your hair won't hold a curl, you just need more mousse. I use a handful of the Ion mousse, roughly the size of a large egg. I distribute it from root to tip on my hair, and comb it through for even distribution.


That's where I stop for Day 1. My hair is straight, if I need to I might add a little of the shine spray, but my blowout is done for the day.



2. Waving My Hair

For Day 2, I wave my hair. I usually add a little more of the heat protectant spray first (just brush it through the bottom half of the hair shaft). The waver is really great because it does all of the work for you! It has 2 settings, low (200) and high (380). While the waver does start to heat up and you can use it in about 60 seconds, it takes about 3-4 minutes to reach the actual temperature. So, I plug it in and go do other things while I wait.

When waving my hair, I start by sectioning off my hair. I like to make the sections diagonal rather than horizontal, the end result will be a bit more natural and uniform looking. You can see in the picture what the waver does when you open the clamp. You just put your hair in there and when it closes your hair will wrap around the barrels creating waves. I did also experiment with wrapping my hair around the barrels (both a single barrel and then as a figure 8 around the barrels) and it worked to create an even tighter wave, however these barrels are just 5/8". I think it would work better with the Gold 'N Hot Jumbo Ceramic Triple Barrel Waver.

When waving, I found that wide but skinny sections worked best. Fill up the width of the waver but don't have more than about 1/2" of hair between plates at a time. I counted to 10 and then released my hair, but this will vary depending upon the person.


You can see what my hair looks like down after waving it (ignore that 1 straight piece, I couldn't find it in my hair before or after the pictures, I think it's about 5 hairs that are just showing up!). A little spray of shine spray was all I needed, but some hair spray would also be great if your hair has a hard time holding on to hair.



3. Day 3 Ponytail

The next day my waves were still there, but not as well defined. I still had a ton of volume, which means that this pony is definitely a lot more volume and a bit edgier than my regular boring ponytail. If needed I could start this style with a little bit of dry shampoo, but it depends on the day.

I pull my hair up and just secure it with a regular ponytail holder. While holding on to the ponytail holder I can pull out a little of the hair on the top for extra volume and it really just stays put.

Tips and Tricks for Difficult to Style Hair

Jenny won her own post on 15 Minute Beauty post in my Summer Pedicure Kit collaboration with Sally Beauty. And it turned out that her hair question was one I know well!

I'm 44 and look young for my age, like early 30's, but due my hair being fine it goes flat so quickly I tend to just opt for a pony tail and while I can usually get away with it since I look younger, I also feel like I look like I am not trying.

Do you have any suggestions with regards to curling/styling medium, just below shoulder length hair? I find that if I use too low of a temperature it gives no curl, or if I crank up the heat it makes the curls a little too Shirley Temple-ish. Is there a happy medium technique, maybe teasing it to help to make the curl look more natural or polished with some volume?

Oh, how I know your pain. My hair is still growing out from last summer's bob (I'm just below my shoulders now!), and I'm well into the "hard to style" length. As well, I have a ton of hair, but it is very fine and it tends to weigh itself down by mid-day. Over the years I've definitely found a few great ways to keep volume and curl in my hair. Here's a peek at what has worked best for me.



The first step is using the right products. I do change up what I put in my hair after washing depending upon how I'm planning to style it, but here's a look at how I tackle it.

If I'm planning on just blowing out my hair straight, I'll use product to help add a little volume and to heat protect from the dryer. Usually that means a few sprays of Root Volumizer on my roots (I spray in a few areas and then spread it around with just my fingers) and some Heat Protection Spray on the rest of my hair, which I comb through.

For days that I'm planning to go a bit more elaborate with my hair, whether that's putting it up somehow or curling it, I'll add a Styling Mousse. I use quite a bit of mousse, probably more than most people! I basically fill my entire palm with mousse, it's about 2 eggs worth. I've found that to get my hair to hold style, I really do need a lot of mousse, and it doesn't feel sticky or weigh it down. It just works.

Sometimes I just need to add a little texture to my hair to give it a little extra "grab". To do that I'll use either Dry Shampoo (on dry hair) or Sea Spray (on damp hair).

Once I have product in my hair, I dry it. I use an ionic dryer to help avoid frizz, but it also seems to add a little extra oomph to my hair. I dry my hair about 90% of the way upside down, I only flip over to smooth it out a bit with a paddle brush. The upside down bit seems to make a big difference for me. Note that once I've smoothed the top layers of my hair with a brush, I'll usually flip myself over again, hit my roots with warm air and then switch to a blast of cool air to help "set" the volume.

Once I have my hair dry, there are a few styling options to pick from.

One of the best ways for me to add a little volume to my roots is with velcro rollers. I can't find the picture of the exact ones I use, but mine are linked below (a smaller size of mine is pictured). I bought the 8 biggest velcro rollers I could find on one of my Sally Beauty trips a few years ago, and while they make me feel like a 1950's housewife, they do help!

I use the rollers after I'm done drying my hair. I'll put a few in at the crown of my head, I usually don't do anything to secure them in place. I wrap them just to get the roots of my hair to I'll hit them with a blast of warm air from the blow dryer. I leave the curlers in place while I do my makeup, taking them out when my hair has cooled down.

I can't talk about adding volume to hair without discussing teasing. However, this is the option I'm least likely to take. I think it must be something about going through high school in the early 1990's, as a reaction to all of the big 1980's hair we never teased or used hair spray. So, I still don't tease my hair much.

I have 2 teasing brushes that I use, and the brushes really do work much better for my fine hair than a teasing comb. I've had the wooden brush longer, it was recommended on a fashion blog, and I basically stalked my local Sally Beauty until it came in stock. It has natural Boar and Porcupine bristles and really grabs on to my hair. For bigger areas I use the wider teasing brush from Ion, it just works faster.

If I want the added volume to stick around, I need to hit it with a little super hold hair spray before I move on to the next section.

The last option is getting your hair to hold curl. Of some sort. This is when I prep my hair with all of that mousse, add a little extra heat protection spray, and grab a curling iron or flat iron. I go for tools that are ceramic or titanium, the heat is spread more evenly, helping to protect my hair from damage. As well, I need many heat settings, with the ability to know just how hot I've made that flat iron.

Everyone's hair needs different levels of heat, so experiment to see what the lowest setting is that you can use. I started using about 410, I use 390 now. The lower heat will decrease your risk of frying your hair, something you want to avoid!

To decrease your chances of getting the Shirley Temple curls, I recommend using something other than a traditional curling iron. I love to curl using a flat iron or curling wand. The Best Hair and Skin Products from Suave

I've been working on today's post for a while. In between product testings, sometimes even I run out of products to use, so I've been slowly working my way through the options from Suave. I'll grab a lotion or body wash here and there, usually while I'm at the grocery store (yes, for me that is Walmart, it is about 1/2 mile from my house!)

After much product testing, these are my favorites! I've found that quite a few of Suave's products really are similar to much more expensive products. At the bottom of the post you'll find a way to get a Suave coupon too, now that you know what to buy!


1. Natural Infusion Awapuhi Strengthening Light Leave-In Cream
In theory this cream is meant to make your hair stronger so it won't break as often. I'm not sure if that's really true (my hair is already pretty strong, so I didn't notice a difference), but I did notice that it was great at helping to smooth out my hair and add shine. 1-2 pumps of the cream on wet hair, then dry and style and usual.

2. Natural Infusion Seaweed All Day Body Leave-In Foam
This is great on wet hair! Just a couple of pumps of this foam, then rub it in all over. I blow dry as usual afterwards. The result is great volume, but I can't feel anything in my hair.

3. Natural Infusion Macadamia Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner
Super moisturizing, these products have macadamia oil which my hair kind of loves. They make my hair shiny and easy to manage.

4. Natural Infusion Macadamia Moisturizing Light Oil Spray
This oil is pretty similar to other hair oils in its effects (shiny hair, easier to manage, less frizz), except it comes in a spray bottle and it seems to have a bigger margin of error. It's really hard to make your head all greasy. It does take a bit to get used to spraying the oil on instead of using a little in your hand. I recommend spraying from about 10 inches away. I usually use it mid-shaft and below, avoiding my roots.

5. Heat Protection Spray
I haven't really noticed this product. Which is the point. I won't skip using a heat protecting product, even if I'm just going to be blow drying my hair a little. (Frying your hair once definitely scares a girl!) This is super lightweight, I can't feel it on my hair at all. No frying accidents have occurred with this spray. Winner.

6. Volumizing Root Boost Spray
This root spray does just what is sounds like. I spray on my roots when my hair is wet, then blow dry as usual. It really does need to be blow dried, this won't help if you're air drying. But, it adds some nice lift right where you want it.

7. Sweet Pea & Violet Body Wash
There are quite a few Suave body washes, for some reason I only ever buy Sweet Pea. It isn't drying, has a nice lather and the smell is nice, but doesn't linger after being washed off.

8. Advanced Therapy Body Lotion
Just what it sounds like, a nicely hydrating body lotion. It sinks in pretty quickly and does the job. It's perfect for my dry skin in the summer, but not quite enough for winter (I need creams that time of year).

9. Clinical Protection PROsolid
I haven't tried the regular antiperspirants from Suave, just the Clinical Strength ones. It works just as well as my other brands (mostly Secret, though I have Dove too).

10. Styling Paste
Yes, this is from the Men's line, but it is great for women too! It isn't greasy or sticky. This paste is perfect for making your hair just a little bit piecey.

All Day Fresh: Product Recommendations

Recently I shared a few tips for combating the heat and humidity of the summer. Mid-summer is usually the worst time of year in my area (hello Ann Arbor!), and it isn't exactly comfortable being in the heat when 6 1/2 months pregnant! Luckily I have a great air conditioner, and a slew of beauty products to help me fight the heat. I got a lot of questions about specific product recommendations after the last post, so here are some of my favorites.

1. Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle: This is definitely my favorite dry shampoo. It is formulated for those with oilier hair, and I swear that it soaks up twice as much oil as other dry shampoos! (My Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle review)

2. Certain Dri Clinical Strength Solid Anti-Perspirant: I've just started using this anti-perspirant a few weeks ago, and I'm impressed! It is the over the counter product most doctors recommend for hyperhidrosis, which is extreme, excessive sweating. It definitely has been keeping me bone dry every day.

3. NYX Eye Shadow Base: The secret behind keeping your eye makeup in place all day long is primer. The NYX shadow base is my go-to shadow primer for every day use, it is super easy to pat a little on my lids before applying shadows.

4. MAC Prep + Prime Skin Refined Zone Treatment: I have combination skin, and in the summer it can be hard to keep the shine to a minimum. One of my favorite treatments is this lotion from MAC. I typically apply a light layer directly to my skin, under foundation or BB Cream. It is very lightweight and dries clear, I can't even tell that I'm wearing it. Just a small amount is enough to keep my t-zone shine free until dinner time! The lotion is light enough that I can even apply a little over makeup if I need a reapplication. 5. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes: I'm usually a very pigmented concealer girl, simply because I have a visible blood vessel under one eye that I'm trying to cover up. Unfortunately, such pigmented concealers are prone to creasing and settling into fine lines. Without prepping the area with a good eye cream, concealers can make you look much older by mid-day. This new BB Cream from Smashbox solves that issue! It hydrates and fights aging like an eye cream, but offers full coverage like my favorite concealers. Because the under eye area is well prepped, the area looks great all day long.

6. Anastasia Lash Genius Waterproof Topcoat: This looks like a basic clear mascara, but it is so much more! When applied over any mascara, it waterproofs and seals your lashes. You can go swimming or cry like a baby at a wedding without running your favorite mascara! It is a great addition to your summer routine to keep mascara in place despite high temperatures.

7. Smashbox Always Sharp Kohl Liner: In addition to waterproofing my mascara, I like to wear waterproof eye liner. I've found that in high heat and humidity, my normal smudge-proof liners just won't stay put. Swapping out to a waterproof liner means that my makeup still looks great at bedtime! I have to admit that I had a really hard time paring down my product list for this post! I restricted myself to a few product categories, and there are a few options for some of them, though my fave product made the picture. I've found that multi-tasking products are wonderful, and that the "fast" products, which promise results in a fraction of the normal amount of time, can be both good and bad. I'm also a fan of just multi-tasking myself. So, I wear a face mask, a deep conditioning hair mask, and tooth whitening strips while I'm doing my at home pedicure. Look at the hours saved!

1. POND'S Luminous Finish BB+ Cream: This is my favorite BB Cream, though there are other great ones out there! I love that it has my moisturizer, sunscreen and some light foundation coverage all in one step! For days that I think I need a bit "more", I mix in a little bit of a highly pigmented concealer that is the exact same shade as my skin. Amazing Cosmetics Amazing Concealer is the best one for that.

2. AG Hair BB Cream: these creams do a ton of things to your hair all at once! It's like a leave in conditioner, smoothing serum, frizz fighter, shine serum, etc... all rolled into one.

3. Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream Eyes: I still need to write a full review of this product, but I really love it! It's a pretty pigmented concealer, but also an eye cream, and I swear it will not settle into fine lines and wrinkles.


4. DevaCurl Deva Towel: It's true, gently squeezing the water out of your hair with a microfiber towel will dramatically cut down on drying time.


5. Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover: This stuff takes 30 seconds and gives you absolutely perfect cuticles! It's a professional manicure in a (much) cheaper bottle.


6. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment: I put this on in the shower (when I can, it isn't pregnancy safe so that isn't for another 3 months), and it is a super powered exfoliating treatment, but still gentle enough for my sensitive rosacea skin.


7. Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle: Every woman should own a dry shampoo. Period. End of story. It is perfect for soaking up greasies on days you don't have time to wash your hair (let's face it, we should all be skipping days anyways, it isn't great to wash your hair every day), it also adds some much needed texture and volume.

8. Maybelline EyeStudio Master Smoky Mechanical Eyeshadow Pencil: It's shadow and eye liner rolled into one, creating the fastest and easiest smoky eye ever! Apply around your eye, then blend it out with a smudge brush.

9. Stila Convertible Color: I use it mainly as a blush, but this cream formula can be used on your eyes and lips as well! It looks like a very pretty flush when blended out with a brush.

10. Neutrogena Naturals Fresh Cleansing + Makeup Remover: Yes, even I hate removing my makeup at night! But, I hate going to sleep with eye liner around my eyes. This face wash (and the Kiehl's below) both are gentle enough to use around your eyes, but they also actually remove eye makeup. (Ok, they really remove regular eye makeup, they both only get about 90% of waterproof eye liner off.) I call that pretty amazing. 1 step instead of 2 (I get to skip eye makeup remover) and I'm that much closer to bed!

My Favorite Way to Travel: My Favorite Beauty Products and Packing Accessories For On The Go

I'm getting pretty cabin feverish with our weather lately. This is both the coldest and most snow on record winter we've had in my area, and I am really ready for spring! Luckily, we're heading out of town soon-ish. Which means I'm very much looking forward to my upcoming trip!

I'm a chronic over-packer, which means that when I flew for work about a month ago it was amazing that I managed to pack for a weekend and use a carry on! I think it has been a little while since I shared my favorite beauty items for travel, you can see all of them in my Beauty Travel Favorites Collection.


Really, all travel packing starts with the bag. What are you going to put your products in? After years of using those free gift with purchase bags, I've gone over to specially purchased bags, and I am never going back. Why? These things are amazing. Mine are from Trina, and you can see them in posts like my dramatic overpacking of my hospital bag. These bags are amazing because they come in so many shapes and sizes. It's super easy to find one that is the right size for what I'm taking. Mine are all lined in clear plastic, so on the off chance I do have a spill it will be easy to clean up. My favorite of the bags is my Weekender, which has smaller removable bags inside.

Next, after years of spilled products, I've learned to be super picky about my travel bottles. My favorite are from Nalgene, which come in a huge array of shapes and sizes. I've also learned that having a bunch of little funnels on hand when preparing your bottles is a huge time and mess saver.

When I have a liquid that needs to be sprayed on, I like to use a travel atomizer like the one from Travalo. It's great for items like heat protectant for my hair or makeup setting spray! And yes, little funnels are great for filling the atomizer as well.

Finally, I'm lusting after that travel mirror. Over the summer, my friend Phyrra had a pretty similar mirror when we were in Chicago and I was so jealous! It is really hard to get decent lighting when you are in a hotel, so I want a mirror like this. I know I can't be the only one whose hair freaks out when exposed to new water! The water is usually hard, I never know if I'll be frizzy or flat, and drying seems to take forever. I've learned that I need to bring my own blow dryer, pretty much no matter where I'm heading. If I'm trying to limit myself to a carry on, I'll bring solid shampoo and conditioner. I use products from LUSH, my favorites are the Godiva and Ultimate Shine Shampoos and Big Solid Conditioner, both of which are in my Beauty Travel Favorites Collection.



The skincare that I travel with changes depending upon the season, what I'm testing at home and where I'm heading. There are a few things that I always bring with me. The first is a tinted moisturizer/BB cream. My current favorite is the Pond's BB Cream, which offers some sunscreen and light coverage. This is actually what I've been using pretty much every day this winter in the place of a heavier foundation.

Next, no matter how much I try to prep my skin for a flight, or even moisturize and mist myself in flight, I always end up dry and a bit lackluster. I now bring a small sample sized vial of Kiehl's Midnight Recovery with me every time I travel. I just need a few drops on my skin before bed, and my skin is back to normal the next morning.

Finally, I always like to bring a few different skincare treatments with me when I travel. I have a few small samples of my favorite masks and scrubs, such as the Kiehl's Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Mask, which are super easy to throw into my bag without taking up much space. I'll have enough for a full use if I need it.



Probably the biggest problem that I have when packing is limiting the amount of makeup that I bring. I'm a girl that needs a lot of choices, and I always overestimate the amount of choice that I'll need. I've started collecting the small travel palettes from Stila. These palettes are a steal! Depending upon the palette they contain up to 5 coordinating eye shadows and a blush. I have about 4 of them, but there are so many more that I want! I just grab a few of these (usually with a regular palette, or two) and that's all I need.

I also need a very pigmented concealer, the Amazing Cosmetics concealer is usually my choice. I love that there are so many shade options and it is easy to blend into the BB Cream for added coverage.

Finally, travel brushes! I think it's a big mistake to leave brushes at home, and a compact set (especially if the brushes are double ended) won't take up much space.

So, I talked about it last week, but my life has been totally crazy since New Year's Day. In large part because most of my work days were all clumped together (I'm not used to that, I work 8-10 days a month and I like to have them spread out a bit more), but also because I was super busy at work on those days, staying so late I barely saw my family. And smack in the middle of those days, I went out of town for 4 days (alone) for a work conference. That's something I rarely do, and traveling alone stresses me out.

So, here I am, stressed and with much less time than I'm used to having each day. You can imagine that dry shampoo has been my best friend the last few weeks.

I've been reaching for a slightly different dry shampoo. I honestly can't figure out how they get it to work, it doesn't seem to have any of that powder that is in all other products. It definitely works, but there's no mess! Just spray into your hair, and there's a bit of added volume, more texture and it soaks up oils. But, it isn't a dry shampoo that gives your hair that white cast and it doesn't feel gross if you run your hands through your hair later on. It's also great that the bottle is huge, because this is a product that you'll want to use all the time!

5 Tips to Make Your Blowout Last Longer

Today I'm sharing tips from Nick Penna, Jr.,the owner and lead stylist of Salon Capri in Newton & Dedham, Mass. As well as Creative Director of Boston-based Be Styled blowdry lounge.


1. While in the chair, ask for volume: Let’s face it, the bigger the hair, the better! Don’t be shy to ask for additional volume, it will be worth it by day three when your blowdry is still flawless!

2. Avoid tight hair ties: Don’t put your hair up in a ponytail with a tight band because it will cause a crease in your hair. If you must put your hair up, use a large clip and clasp it on top of your head, or a soft tie.

3. Avoid moisture: Humidity and water can be the ultimate destroyers for blowouts. When you shower, be sure to use a shower cap to keep the moisture away.

4. Dry shampoo = best friend: Don’t be afraid to apply a generous amount! My favorite product is Powder Bluff by Kerastase - try it! This spray helps absorb oil for long-lasting blowdrys. It’s an instant style refresher and smells amazing!

5. Don’t touch your hair: We know how fabulous a blowdry feels once complete, however, let the stunning style set and don’t mess with it! Touching it too much will accumulate oil and can make your blowdry fall flat.

Summer is all about being outside and enjoying the warm weather. I admit that one of the last places that I want to be is inside doing my hair. While I usually only wash my hair every other day, in the summer I like to stretch that time out a little bit, maybe by another day or so. Especially with a toddler that only wants to be on her swing set! I need to spend less time on my hair!

The nice people over at Klorane sent me a can of their new Dry Shampoo with Nettle. Klorane's dry shampoo is a bit of a cult favorite, I don't even know how many times I've heard pro stylists recommend it as their favorite.

How is this dry shampoo any different? Here's the lowdown from their press release:

Nettle, a flowering plant grown exclusively for KLORANE in the nitrogen-rich soil of Portugal. Naturally rich in vitamins A, C and amino acids, Nettle has been used over the centuries as a diuretic and dextoxifier, a treatment for acne and eczema and even as an aphrodisiac. KLORANE Laboratories obtains Nettle extract from the root of the plant through a hydro-alcoholic solution. Within the Nettle extract KLORANE found polycyclic compounds, which inhibit the activity of a sebum-producing enzyme. In fact, Dry shampoo with nettle’s quick oil-controlling power is clinically proven to absorb excess oil quickly and to normalize sebum production after 3 months of continuous use.

So, this plant helps to inhibit creation of oil with use, and the dry shampoo also absorbs a lot of oil. In fact, this dry shampoo is specially formulated for oily hair, which means it is perfect for stretching out full shampoos in the summer!

It works just like other dry shampoos, a little spray at the oily areas, let it sit then move your fingers around in it and brush. I definitely think that it absorbs more than other dry shampoos, and it seems to keep doing so all day long. It seems to be lighter weight as well, I can barely feel it in my hair. It also does a great job of adding a little volume to my hair, so I've been spraying it on almost every day (even on freshly washed hair) to add a little extra oomph at my crown.

The only bad thing that I can say about it is that it is white. Which means really that I've been spoiled by my Batiste Brunette Dry Shampoo, it's nice to not freak out because you've sprayed your brown hair a strange white color. However, once I've let the product sit in my hair for a few minutes, zjooshed my fingers around and maybe brushed for about 20 seconds, you can't see the Klorane in my hair at all.

I think this is probably the heaviest duty dry shampoo I've tried!

Batiste Brunette: No White!

You know that new hair color that I have? The one that is so much darker than before? Yeah. It kinda sucks for dry shampoo. With my lighter hair I'd only had problems with white residue if I really, dramatically over did it with the dry shampoo. But, with my dark hair... yeah, it doesn't take so much. (I've had this happen with 1 dry shampoo that I've yet to recommend on here. I'm still debating about the overall impression of said dry shampoo. So, I will update on that bit later.) In the meantime, I broke out a can of Batiste Brunette, which I already had here in my beauty closet.

Soooo much better! I can go crazy and there's no white. I could spray half a can of this stuff on my hair and still be fine. It does a good job of soaking up the oily/greasies, but really it's best for adding volume I think. I love to use a little on my "flat" days, and you can't tell that it's there.

This is definitely the dry shampoo I'm reaching for now.

6. Fekkai Coif Oceanique is my other favorite wave spray because it’s better for fine or damaged hair.

7. I am obsessed with the Avéne skin care line!! I use it on myself actually, especially after traveling. It is great for sensitive skin. I love the Avéne Micellar Lotion Cleanser and Make-up Remover as part of a cleansing regimen. I also get super moisturized lips with the amazing Avéne Cold Cream Lip Cream, which is great to use during the cold dry months or after too much sun in the summer!

8. On my clients I try not to cover their skin too much with heavy foundation or concealer. I really want the natural skin to show through and provide a natural glow as opposed to an artificial one. I am a big fan of the Jouer Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 because it provides some of the best coverage without looking cakey or heavy! It even comes in a matte formula which is great for my male clients.

Aveeno Pure Renewal Dry Shampoo: Great Everyday Dry Shampoo Option

Another day... another dry shampoo?

It's true, yet another dry shampoo has hit the market, though the options at this price point are usually either a bit lackluster or aren't available at many mass market stores. Aveeno's new Pure Renewal is definitely worth checking out if you haven't found a dry shampoo that you love yet.

This dry shampoo comes in a spray can and is sulfate free. It has a herbal, clean scent and it seems to be completely clear! I can't tell where I sprayed it even when I just do it on my hand.

Overall, it does add nice volume to my hair, soaks up all of my oiliness and lasts all day. If you haven't added a dry shampoo to your hair product collection yet, grab this one next time you're at the store.

The 10 Best Dry Shampoos

Yesterday I shared with you how to use dry shampoo, and today I'm sharing my favorite dry shampoos!

I've tried about 25-30, and while no dry shampoo is absolutely perfect, some of them are really amazing! I've only shared the best of the best here. These are the ones that work great for me and I'm more than willing to pay money to use them again. All of these do the job. They suck up the oil, give me volume and don't leave a white cast to my hair. They all will last a good 12 hours as well!

While there are 4 products featured here, this is really 3 products, with an alternative form that I think works a tad better for curly hair. These are products that should be easy for pretty much any one to buy at a big box store near you. I bought the Suave at my local Target, the TRESemmé has been at my Walmart, etc.

Batiste Dry Shampoo: Look for this one at ULTA. It comes in 2 scents, I've only used the "Blush" which is a light floral scent. I smell it during application, nothing lingers.

Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo: This stuff works great but can be hard to track down. At least near me. It's constantly sold out! Maybe it's a sign?

TRESemmé Dry Shampoo: There are a lot of options for the TRESemmé dry shampoos. Volumizing or not? Foam or spray? It should be easy to find one that might provide a little side benefit for your hair. I'd stick with the spray unless you're curly, I found that the foam is easier to use than a spray on days I'm curly. Why? Because I need to use a natural bristle brush to get rid of all the white-ish cast left behind by a dry shampoo, which is a nightmare with curls. The foam doesn't need this step, though it usually isn't quite enough to sop up my oily hair on straight days.


In case you feel the need to splurge a bit on your dry shampoo, I do have 2 favorites.

Ojon Full Detox: This has a nice fresh scent and I thought it was one of the easiest to apply without a white cast to my hair.

Oliver Ifergan: Full confession.... this is the dry shampoo that lives on my bathroom counter and that I reach for about 95% of the time. I love this stuff. It sucks everything up, gives just enough (but not too much) volume and I barely even have to zjoos my fingers through my hair to remove the white. I'll be sad when I finish the can.


If you'd prefer to sprinkle over shake and spray, I found some options, though they're all over the $10 price tag.

Finley Hair Powder: Finley comes in different colors, which is great for avoiding the white cast if you have darker hair. But use a very light touch! Too much and you can make your hair look like hair plugs. Really! (I did it.) A small sprinkle, zjoos and zjoos a bit more and you're done.

Keratin Complex: I can't actually find my Keratin Complex dry shampoo (I believe it is hiding out in my bathroom somewhere), so instead you get to look at my box with the refill. This is my favorite of the powder products. It is released through the brush! Just shake a little, and brush onto hair. It is so easy to get a well distributed application and no overdo it! Oh, and it comes with a free refill!

Oscar Blandi Dry Shampoo: This is a classic, mentioned on almost every dry shampoo best of list. It just works. I like that the application tip is little, I put it in my part and slightly squeeze the bottle. (I don't know if this is what you're meant to do, but it is how I use it.)


Redken Powder Grip: This isn't really a "dry shampoo" so much as a texturizer, volumizer and dry shampoo all rolled into one. If you want to achieve volume, reach only for the Powder Grip 03. This stuff seriously puts all of the other products to shame. A small amount and your hair feels a bit tacky. You can move it anywhere. Put your hair up and I swear you will need fewer bobby pins. This is a must buy for prom and wedding season!
