Intensive Treatment in Under 5 Minutes: Kerastase Fusio-Dose Review

I Bought It, Affiliate Link

Kerastase Fusio Dose Review

I've been pretty open with my hair struggles. I have thick, but fine hair. And it's pretty straight, and an in between brown that's kind of blah on it's own. So, I mess with it, a lot! My hair can take a lot of abuse, but eventually even my hair can't take it any more. There was that time a few years ago that I fried my hair, and too much heat styling (aka- obsession with my BeachWaver) resulted in hair that felt like a Brillo Pad. More recently, I've colored, bleached, permed and heat styled my way into damaged hair. I've been using deep conditioners, hair treatments like Olaplex, and avoiding heat styling. But still, my hair is breaking off and split ends are multiplying!

I recently went to my salon for a root touch up and trim (I've been going for more frequent trims with the damage), and my stylist was surprised to see how dry my hair had gotten over the last few weeks! She decided that we would "go for the big guns" and do a deep treatment.

The Best Drugstore Hair Products

The Best Drugstore Hair Products

I'm a hair product junkie. You name it, I want to try it. I have high end, luxury, salon only, and drugstore hair products stashed all over my bathroom! I'm constantly trying new products, new ways to style my hair, I can't do the same thing more than 1-2 times.

All of this (and a bunch of sponsored posts, truthfully), mean that I've tried a lot of drugstore hair products. Today for Makeup Wars we're showcasing our favorites, and I have to admit, my list is rather... long. And difficult to shorten. I just went through my bathroom and the "hair" bin in my office and pulled out my favorites that were from the drugstore! I couldn't not share some of them (and really, these are the ones I really like, I left plenty of stuff in the bin!) Oh well, I'm sharing it all!

Changing it Up: Smoothing Before Styling

Sponsored Post

Changing it Up: Smoothing Before Styling

When shopping for hair products, in the past I've always immediately reached for the volumizing version of everything. I wanted volumizing shampoo, conditioner, styling products... you get the idea. The bigger the better!

In the last 6 months or so I've really processed my hair a lot, something that has finally tipped my previously very healthy hair that could handle all sorts of abuse, over the edge. My hair is definitely drier and damaged, resulting in some frizz and it can be hard to get my hair smooth without using heat. The last thing that I want to do is add an additional heat styling step to my hair care routine each day! However, the unfortunately truth is that I do need a little smoothing now before curling my hair. Without it, my hair looks a bit frizzy and not well pulled together.

I decided to try out TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Color Shampoo & Conditioner collection because they are formulated for color treated hair like mine, and it has Keratin and Moroccan Argan Oil to help treat my damaged hair. I also added in the TRESemmé Keratin Heat Defense Spray, which I thought would help protect my hair from even more damage from heat styling. I spray it on my damp hair, and I've been drying my hair with warm (instead of hot) air and then finishing with cool air to lock in my style.

Since swapping out these products, my hair is definitely smoother and I've been able to skip using a flat iron. If you've damaged your hair like me, make sure you try swapping out for smoothing products! Skipping the additional heat exposure is preventing further damage and saving me time each day.

Clarify All the Things: Oribe's The Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo and Essential Antidote Replenishing Conditioner Review

So, about a week or so ago my hair hit a breaking point. Not quite breaking I guess, but things were ok, and then OMGWTFBBQ things are sooooo not right!

And really, I should have seen this coming.

We put a pool in this summer at my house. Yes. We saved our pennies, and put in a pool (with many fancy safety covers, alarms, fences, etc), which means I'm now a peds ICU doctor with a pool. There aren't many of us out there. With a pool comes a lot of time in that pool, which I love! I'm the mom in the pool doing hand stands with my 5 year old. We swim around the deep end together, I throw her in the shallow end... you get the idea. I'm not the mom lounging by the side of the pool. I'm in there enjoying it.

As a result of our time in the water, my 5 year old's dark blonde hair has had a bit of a greenish tinge, which inspired a massive experiment with different clarifying shampoos and treatments. And a freelance post over on eBay: In the Pool: Why Your Hair Turns Green And How to Fix It. My daughter's hair is much better now.

But, in all of the excitement about my daughter's hair, I completely ignored my own hair. I was focused on color, and since I hadn't seen any changes in my own balayage highlights, I ignored the increasing manageability issues I was having. It was taking longer to dry my hair, it wasn't curling easily and my hair was going flat more quickly. A lot of that could be explained by the humidity.

And then came that critical morning, and it took me about 45 minutes to dry my hair. Really. It "usually" takes about 12 minutes or so. And even at the end of 45 minutes, my hair just felt gross. It was a little sticky, rough and still didn't feel completely dry. The ends were horribly frizzy and looked full of split ends (which I don't have), and no amount of product was helping.

I needed to clarify my hair, and do it fast. I confess that I tried a product that we had at home (I'll share which ones and my thoughts in a later post rounding all of them up), but really, nothing was really fully removing all of the build up. It was about 30% better with a few shampoos with a clarifying shampoo (I've thrown that one out).

I decided it was time to really splurge and at least trying a clarifying shampoo and conditioner duo that wouldn't dry out my hair. So I went for the big guns, I ran to the Ann Arbor BlueMercury and I splurged on Oribe (I might have a bit of an Oribe problem, here are my favorite products from Oribe).

Read on to learn more about Oribe's foaming clarifying shampoo and conditioner.

Wash Your Hair in Reverse with TRESemmé

Product Sent for Review Sponsored Post

Tresemme Reverse System Shampoo and Conditioner review

Have you seen the tips on Pinterest about "correctly" washing your hair? And have you noticed that lately, a lot of those tips have recommended conditioning you hair before you wash it? It's a great idea. Add some much needed moisture to your hair, and follow it up by using shampoo. It removes excess conditioner, which weighs down your hair, but still lets your hair be moisturized.

While reverse washing sounds great in theory, it turns out that in reality it can be a bit difficult to pull off. There are many lightweight conditioners that don't hydrate quite enough to be used as a first step, and there are many shampoos that strip your hair too much to be the last step. I tried reverse washing with my regular shampoo and conditioner (a salon brand color safe option that I currently having hanging out in my shower), and the results weren't so good. My hair was frizzy and difficult to style. It was less shiny and difficult to style.

But, when done right, reverse washing really can give you amazing hair!

Summer Hair: The Best Products To Help Prevent Damage At the Pool and the Beach

Sponsored Post

Summer Hair Products

Now that summer is has officially begun, it's time to start dealing with the aftermath! When I was growing up, summer meant swimming. Almost every day we swam at a pool or in Lake Michigan. If you haven't seen it, you should check out the Grand Haven beach, it's my hometown and the big white sand beach there is amazing! But that meant that my hair could take quite the beating in the summer between sun exposure, chlorine and lake water. At least it was fresh water, not salt water, right? By the end of the summer my hair was dry and my dark blonde/light brown (my natural color when I was growing up) had a tinge of green. This was despite my mom's best efforts with chlorine shampoo and intensive moisturizers!

Luckily things have changed a bit, and today's products are more effective. I recently hit Sally Beauty to pick up a few products to use on myself and my 4 year old daughter, who has inherited that dark blonde hair and seems to love the pool as much as I did.

Summer Hair Products

At the Pool

Chlorine can really do a number on your hair. It helps dry it out and the chlorine deposits can give hair a green cast, especially if you have light hair. I've found that using a clarifying shampoo to remove the chlorine (and it will also remove other metals such as iron or copper if you have hard water) can really help your hair retain moisture and makes styling more manageable.

I like to use Swimmer's Shampoo and Conditioner after swimming, removing the chlorine before it really builds up in the hair. This duo from Ion is gentle on your hair and leaves hair soft and easy to manage. If your hair is getting dried out from the pool, I'd add in an intensive moisturizing treatment that doesn't weigh down hair like the Awapuhi Intensive Treatment.

I also really love the Swimmer's Leave-In Conditioner if hair is taking an extra beating from the pool water. You can apply it after the conditioner, but it's also great to spray on damp hair right before swimming, helping to protect your hair from the pool. I rinse off in the shower and then spray a lot of this leave-in on hair to really saturate the hair. It seems to really help hair that's been damaged by the pool water!

At the Beach

If you'll be spending time at the beach rather than the pool, then your hair faces different challenges. Instead of chlorine, it will often be salt water that is drying out your hair, unless you're lucky like I was as a kid and are swimming in fresh water. The sun also can have a dramatic effect on your hair color, especially if you've paid a lot of money for professional color!

While at the beach, my first priority is protecting my hair from the sun. While you can mix a bit of water into regular sunscreen to create your own hair sun protection spray, I've always found that to be messy and a bit sticky. The Ion Sun Protection Spray is much lighter weight, you really can't tell that it is in your hair! I like to spray it throughout my hair before going out and then I protect my hair further by wearing a hat.

The beach is actually an amazing place to get an intensive conditioning treatment! Your hair is heating up, making it ideal to soak in conditioner. Using the Awapuhi Intensive Treatment, applying a light layer throughout the hair and then securing it up in a bun will keep your hair out of your face and when you pull down your hair you'll have amazingly soft waves!

Finally, after a day at the beach, everyone wants the perfect beachy waves! Even if you haven't been in the water, it's easy to get the look. I love spraying Surf Shake Sea Salt Texturizing Spray throughout hair and scrunching up to create waves. Follow it up with the Coastal Cooler Cooling Shine Mist, which adds natural shine and helps you cool down after an afternoon in the sun.

What are your favorite tips to help hair survive summer without turning into straw? While I love these products at the pool and beach, I pull them out for days that I'm out in the sun! I love using the Sun Protection Spray for a day at the zoo with my girls so my hair color lasts longer, and the Coastal Cooler Cooling Shine Mist is a nice finishing touch each day to add shine.

Beauty Blogger Empties: Loving These Things and Repurchasing Them

Product Sent for Review I Bought It Myself Affiliate Links

favorite beauty blogger products

I've been talking lately about a lot of my beauty blogger friends, and we all agreed that over the past few years, we've been cutting down on the continual product testing. Don't get me wrong, I still use a lot of new products, but I'm allowing myself longer to test them. I'm spending a lot more time with my favorite "in between" products. And while those favorites do evolve a bit over time, I'm doing a lot more repurchasing of products, and I actually have empties! I'm using products up! This was unheard of a few years ago.

So, in honor of all those discussions lately, here's a look at all of the products I've finished and am repurchasing. I'm spending my own money on all of these, despite the offers for similar (free) products. I'd rather use this salt spray than any other. I want my own eye cream, thanks!

1. iS Clinical Youth Eye Complex (at DermStore or SkinStore): This eye cream was mentioned in my Best Eye Creams from Dermatologists post, and somehow has not had it's own post though I've mentioned it a few times! It has vitamins C, E, Retinol, tons of hydration, peptides to increase collagen and it also fights dark circles. I definitely think it makes me look more awake because my concealer looks so much better over it. It is pricey, but the bottle lasted me 6 months! In my shopping cart now. (Not pregnancy safe)

2. It Cosmetics CC+ Illumination Cream (at It Cosmetics or ULTA): This is the newest CC Cream from It, they also have a more traditional (not illuminating) version. They've sent me both kinds, in various shades. Because it is a pretty full coverage product, you do need a pretty good color match. Unfortunately for me, I'm darker than the Fair shade, but much lighter than Light. So, I've bought tubes of both (depending upon what was sent to me) and I've been mixing my own. For my perfect match I need about 75% fair, 25% light. It is hydrating but not overly so for my combination skin, and I love that it is medium to full coverage with almost no blending. I'm going to continue buying 2 tubes all summer long so I can have the perfect match! (Not pregnancy safe)

3. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day 5-in-1 Styling Treatment (at Sephora or Nordstrom, my Living Proof PhD review): This styling cream is in my hair pretty much every day now. I've already gone through 2 bottles! It is the only Living Proof product that combines their anti-frizz ingredient with the volumizing product, and it does a great job of protecting my hair from heat damage as well.

4. Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash (at Sephora and Macy's): I have a big bottle of this in my shower and another next to my sink. I used to reserve this amazing face wash for when I travel (I would hoard bottles of it from hotels), but now I just use it pretty much every day. I do rotate in other products on occasion (like the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser), but this one is my current favorite.

5. Revitalash Advanced Lash Conditioner (from Revitalash, Nordstrom or Drugstore.com): I pre-purchased 4 of these during the summer Nordie's Anniversary Sale, so they were quite the deal! It makes my lashes so long that I have to be careful with my glasses. Yes. I will not test other lash conditioners. (Not pregnancy safe)

6. Garnier Clean + Nourishing Cleansing Oil (at Drugstore.com or ULTA): I mentioned this on Monday in my Favorite Eye Makeup Removers post, I think I'm on my 4th or 5th bottle of this cleanser already. It's meant to be used just as a facial cleanser, but I use it with a cotton round to easily remove all of my eye makeup. It does leave an oily mess behind, I clean that up with the Bliss Face Wash.

7. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara (at Too Faced or Sephora): I've lost track of how many tubes of this stuff I've gone through!

8. Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Precision Glide Eyeliner (at Elizabeth Arden) and the Beautiful Color Smoky Eyes Pencil (at Elizabeth Arden): These are currently my 2 go-to eye liner pencils. They're well pigmented, smudge just right into my lash line and won't budge all day.

9. Kerastase Spray à Porter (at Kerastase or Birchbox): This is my go-to salt spray. Others are ok, but this one just really works for me. It adds just enough texture that my hair holds styles and it doesn't feel sticky! How did I live without this??

10. Kerastase Bain Chroma Riche Shampoo & Masque Chroma Riche (at Kerastase): Their shampoo and conditioner for color treated, dry or damaged hair. I've discovered that it really is worth it, and if you watch carefully these products come up on Rue La La about every 6-8 weeks, so you should never have to pay full price! I've found that for some reason the shampoo is really the key to a great hair day for me, I use it every other shampoo (I still get those good hair days!). I buy the big, salon size, and I use the super intense hair mask (the regular conditioner is now not so helpful... I go with the masque!)

What have you used up recently? I had a lot of empties this month. So, I'm currently filling shopping carts all over the web!

Product Sent for Review I Bought It Myself Affiliate Links
I feel the need to explain this disclosure a bit more. A few of these items were originally sent by PR, like the Revitalash (which was sent years ago, but I've repurchased so many times that I've lost count), the Kerastase spray was sent, the Living Proof and It Cosmetics sent me the CC+ Cream but I don't actually match any of it so I mix 2 together (and I like it so much that I've repurchased 2 colors a few times). So yes, stuff was sent, but I've been spending my own money!

The Best of Kerastase: Yes, It Is Worth It

Product Sent for Review I Bought It Myself Affiliate Links

The Best of Kerastase

I'm not sure how this happened, but over the last few years or so... I've become obsessed with one of the most expensive hair care brands out there. It started when I bought some shampoo and conditioner on Rue La La a few years ago. I noticed that with the shampoo and conditioner, my hair was easier to style. I actually got comments on Facebook pictures about my hair being shiny (completely ignoring the new baby in those pics), must have been some good hair! I had a tub of hair masque that I'd break out when really necessary. That little tub was babied for years, and it always gave me a week of good hair days. When I ran out, I was sad. I bought other salon brand products and they were good, and I enjoyed them. But there was always a bit of regret. They weren't Kerastase.

Suddenly, Kerastase started showing up on my doorstep (gasp!) I have no idea how that happened, but I had styling products! Mousse! Hair Spray! And best of all... a sea salt spray. The only one that has ever really worked well for my hair. When Kerastase started showing up semi-regularly on Rue La La, I started buying big bottles of shampoo and more masque. I repurchased products. I started stocking up in case I ran out. And I found myself saying no to testing other products.

So, my name is Christine... and I am a Kerastase addict. And these are my favorites!

1. Réflection Bain Chroma Riche (at Birchbox): This shampoo is the real secret to the good hair days. I've found that as long as I use this shampoo (a shine enhancing shampoo for color treated hair like mine), my hair is healthier, dries faster and styling is easier. When possible, I buy the very large, salon exclusive size from Rue La La.

2. Fondant Chroma Captive (at Birchbox): This lightweight conditioner is the "everyday" conditioner that I usually pair with the shampoo. It is hydrating without weighing down my hair.

3. Réflection Masque Chroma Riche (at Birchbox): The intensive mask that I was previously hoarding, I now use it about once a week. While I often just swap it out for my daily conditioner, it really does work better when I take a few extra minutes to towel dry my hair a bit after shampooing, then apply and rinse out after 10 minutes or so.

4. Spray Volumifique (at Kerastase): This spray adds shine, softens hair and can really help add a lot of volume! I don't use it often, but I like to reach for it when I know I'm styling my hair and want volume.

5. Nectar Thermique (at Birchbox): A light lotion that I'll use on damp hair when my hair is feeling dry. It add hydration, helps fight damage and protects from heat damage.

6. Ciment Thermique (at Birchbox): Let's face it, sometimes we all over do it with heat styling, and our hair suffers. When my hair is looking damaged and I need to head to the salon for a trim, I break out this lotion. It helps with the damaged areas, and helps to protect from further damage.

7. Spray À Porter (at Birchbox): The first sea salt spray to work for me, this is really the key product for when I curl my hair. I use about 8-10 sprays throughout my hair when it is wet. It gives my hair just the right amount of texture and holds the curls in place much longer.

8. Mousse Bouffante (Kerastase): If I want really big, Texas worthy hair with some hold, then this is the mousse I reach for. Don't overdo it, about the size of an egg is all that my hair can handle.

9. Laque Dentelle (at Kerastase): This is my current favorite hair spray! It has flexible hold but really does a great job of working all day long despite any humidity. I'm on my second can already.

Dry Hair Solution: Ion Extreme Moisture Cream

Sponsored Post

Ion Extreme Moisture Cream

Treating dry hair can be tricky. It's easy to say to just use a hydrating hair mask and be done with it. In reality, many hair masks take a lot of time, usually involve heating up towels and wrapping your hair before your shower, and they can be messy. If you overdo it your hair might be hydrated, but it will also be overly moisturized and fall flat. Who wants flat hair? Not me.

I recently discovered Ion's Extreme Moisture Cream, and I'm in love! It is very easy to use. It replaces my regular conditioner in the shower. Simply apply to your hair and leave it on for 1-2 minutes (or if you need a deeper treatment, wait for 3-5 minutes) and rinse it out. I apply Extreme Moisture Cream to the mid-shaft and below on my hair since those are the driest parts. The result is smooth, healthy looking hair that isn't weighed down! I still have the volume that I love.

Nexxus Hydralight Review: Why, Yes, My Hair Is Healthy

Sponsored Post

Nexxus Hydralight Review

For a few weeks now I've been using the Nexxus Hydralight collection. The Shampoo, Conditioner, Leave-In Conditioning Foam and Root Lift Mist. And I have to admit that while I haven't used Nexxus since high school, and it feels pretty 1980's, I'm really impressed. I think I've found my new go-to products for in between product testings.

This collection is geared towards those that want to hydrate their hair, but don't want to weigh down their hair and flatten it out. This is perfect for me! While I need to hydrate and help my hair recover from the record cold temperatures we had all winter in Michigan, I still want to have volume. This spring I'm craving volume, and anything that helps me get volume is very good.

Shampoo and Conditioner
They seem like most other shampoo and conditioner duos, but when I tried using the two styling products without them, the results just weren't the same. You need to start off with this set. The shampoo is clear and makes a nice rich lather. It isn't one of those shampoos that makes your hair squeak (which is good, that squeaking means you've stripped your hair of all natural oils). Instead it just feels like it gets everything clean, then rinses out easily. The conditioner is white and feels pretty lightweight, but when you rinse it out everything feels very soft and smooth.

Both products have the same scent, and I swear they smell a bit like a fruity iced tea to me. It took me a few days to figure out what the scent was, but that is definitely the best way I can describe them. It is soft and subtle, but I can smell it in my hair throughout the day when my hair moves around.

Leave-In Conditioning Foam
I think this is my favorite of the four products. It comes in a non-aerosol pump, just shake the bottle first. I use three pumps, I distribute it throughout my wet hair and then comb through with a wide tooth comb. It has the same scent as the shampoo and conditioner and is very lightweight, once you put it in you won't be able to feel it in your hair at all.

The foam does a great job of taming any static and fly aways, it adds some shine and I think it makes my hair a bit easier to dry out straight, it seems to look like I've actually spent some time with my flat iron. In reality, I touch my flat iron about once every 2 months. I think this product is a new daily must use product for me!

Root Lift Mist
This is the final step in the Hydralight collection, adding a little extra volume if you want it, where you want it. This isn't a miracle volume in a spray bottle product. You can't spray a little of the Root Lift at your hair and have huge hair that looks like you stepped out of the 1980's.

Root Lift will add a bit of volume to your hair, but really it makes it just look like you have more hair. I swear! I spray a bit at the crown of my head and instead of looking like my hair is bigger there, it looks like I have more hair there.

So, why is Hydralight going to be a staple in my routine? My hair looked pretty amazing. I had strangers stopping me in the cafeteria at work to tell me that my hair was so healthy and shiny. Really, that happened twice. My long bob is smoother, shinier and I haven't touched my flat iron.

FYI, if you've tried Hydralight and write a review on Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #WMHydraLight you could be featured on Walmart.com!

Instant Volume: Klorane with Flax Fiber Shampoo and Leave-In Spray Review

Klorane Shampoo with Flax Fiber and Leave-In Spray with Flax Fiber Review

This spring I'm all about volume. I want more volume in my hair, I swear that it will make growing out my long bob easier! But, I don't really want to work to get that volume. Use my teasing comb? No. I refuse! I'd rather just use a volumizing styling product, especially if it gives me volume that lasts all day without any effort.

Klorane has just come out with 2 new products that promise to give me that easy volume (and yes, they do deliver!)

What's different about the Flax Fiber products is, well, flax fiber. The flax for these products is grown on an organic farm in the south of France, and then extracted by Klorane. The flax forms a lightweight film around each hair to provide extra support and add volume. The flax is found in both the shampoo and a companion leave-in spray. I get some volume from the shampoo alone, but if I want a bit more volume then I'll just spray the Leave-In on to the areas I want a bit more volume (mostly the roots on the crown of my head). I use it on my hair when it is wet and then just dry and style as usual.

The Leave-In also has a mineral clay in it to absorb any extra oil in your hair without weighing it down. This is great if you have oily hair, which isn't usually an issue for me but I'm interested to see if that helps me at all this summer.

So, do I get more volume with this duo? Yes. It isn't over the top volume, but it is definitely good volume that lasts all day. I love that to get it I don't need to do anything other than reach for a different shampoo in the shower, and I can add in a few spritzes of the leave-in if I want a little extra at my crown.

5 Deep Conditioners That Need Under 5 Minutes

5 Deep Conditioners That Need Under 5 Minutes

I'm a big fan of intensive hair treatments. But, I usually don't have time for the whole "slather this in your hair, then apply a shower cap and then a warm towel" thing. (Who does?)

Instead, I find myself using up bottle after bottle (or tub) of quick intensive hair treatments. All of these take under 5 minutes, but most of them take under 3 minutes. Which means you can just swap out your daily conditioner for a hair mask once or twice a week while in the shower! Apply, shave your legs, rinse your hair. The timing is perfect!

1. DermOrganic Intensive Hair Repair Masque (buy it here)
2. Joico K-Pak Revitalux (buy it here)
3. Aussie 3 Minute Miracle (buy it here)
4. Neutrogena Deep Recovery Hair Mask (buy it here)
5. Mark Hill MiracOILicious 2 Minute Intensive Treatment (buy it here)

A quick note to say that the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle collection has just been greatly expanded! There are all sorts of new options. Shine, Color Protection, Moisture, etc. I've only used the Shine once, so I'm not quite ready to review, but O.M.G. You guys, my hair was definitely super shiny and soft. Love it!

(Note that these products have been sent for review in the past, but I've purchased most of them over and over. Not the Aussie, that's new. Even I can't finish a bottle of conditioner that fast!)

Klorane's Shampoo with Nettle

Recently, Klorane sent me their new Shampoo with Nettle, and even though I don't really have very oily hair, I've fallen hard for it!

The shampoo is formulated for those with oily hair, with the addition of Nettle, a plant grown for Klorane in Portugal. The Nettle is rich in vitamins A, C and amino acids and decreases the production of oil by inhibit the activity of a sebum-producing enzyme. So, over time your scalp makes less oil.

In the meantime, this is a pretty amazing shampoo. It's lightweight (though it is a little bit watery to be 100% perfect, so be careful when you put it in your hand), has a little herbal scent and a nice lather. Mostly what it does is make my hair super clean without stripping it of every last bit of moisture (no squeaky clean = a good thing) and it somehow helps to make my hair easier to style and softer.

I've been combining it with some of my more intense hydrating masks and I swear I've been having so many more good hair days.

Top 10 Tuesday: 10 Things in My Shower

Product Sent for Review I Bought it Myself

best beauty products for a shower

Today for Top 10 Tuesday we're sharing what is in our showers, I have to admit that most of us didn't think we'd reach 10 items, and while I do a lot of product testing (which doesn't always end up on the blog), I wasn't sure I'd come up with 10 items in all of that mess in my shower. (Yes, you can go ahead and feel bad for my hubby, he seems to put up with this giant bottle collection in our shower.)

beauty bloggers share 10 items in their shower

1. Joico K Pak Shampoo and Conditioner : This is currently my go-to shampoo and conditioner. I love that it is really hydrating and doesn't weigh down my hair. It also doesn't hurt that it is often included in the ULTA Liter Sale.

2. Head and Shoulders Green Apple: I have eczema and there are patches of it near my ears. I sometimes need to use a dandruff shampoo on my flare ups (I'm able to avoid using topical steroids with about once a week Head & Shoulders, I think that's pretty good!), though in the past I've hated doing this. The old school stuff smelled horrible, so I'd drag my feet and wait until I could no longer wait, so I'd be forced to use the steroids. Luckily they have a ton of new variations, and I like the Damaged Hair collection and the Green Apple, which smells yummier!

3. DermOrganic Intensive Hair Repair Masque: I love this stuff! I have a couple of intensive moisturizing masks in my shower, but this one only takes a minute to work so it seems to be my go-to products.

4. Kiehl's Aromatic Blends Orange Flower & Lychee Body Wash: I have a ton of body washes in my bathroom, but this is the one I seem to save for "good occasions". Why? Because I'm strange, and sometimes that good occasion can just be hanging out at home with the family, but it does feel like a big splurge on the days I use this one!

5. Beautisol's Hammam Deep Exfoliating Mitt: Are you tired of me talking about this exfoliating mitt yet? I know there are others out there, but this one seems to be just that perfect balance of exfoliating and not too harsh and it has held up for forever!

6. Skintimate Shave Gel for Dry Skin: I try other shaving gels, but I always seem to come back to this one!

7. Gillette Venus & Olay in Sugarberry Scent: I need 5 blades to get a close shave so I go for the Venus, but it's only recently that I've been noticing that the big moisturizing strips are worth the added bulk. (Ok, I think only the Olay ones are, they move out of the way easily and really do make my legs smoother.) I really love this summer's new Sugarberry scent!

8. Le Edge: You know when you're in the shower and you scratch an itch somewhere (for me this is usually my side) and you come back with a bunch of dead skin under your nails? Yes, likely TMI. It always makes me want to scratch myself everywhere to exfoliate all of that extra skin off! Le Edge does that for you. It feels like using a razor, except that the metal edge is blunt, so it won't cut you. It painlessly and evenly gets rid of that extra skin. Without scratch marks.

9. Solevation Shower Mat: I love being able to just run my feet over it a few times. Perfect feet in a minute! While washing my hair!

10. Nivea Skin Firming Hydration Body Lotion: This is become my go-to summer lotion this year!

9 Best Intensive Hair Masks

9 Best Intensive Hair Masks

Now that all of the Beauty Spotlight Team members have visited the desert island (which may, or may not, have been very deserted for me, the post cheater), we've decided to start sharing top lists of our favorite products! And... once again I'm a cheater. I think these were meant to be top 10, but I only came up with 9 hair conditioners. Oops!

Regular readers of my blog will know that last summer I went a bit too crazy with my curling iron, and fried the top layers of my hair. Really and truly fried, the entire length of the very top layers of my hair felt like a brillo pad and it looked horrible!

I have tried so many hair masks since that time that I should either join CA (Conditioners Anonymous) or start my own hair mask store. Truly. I counted, at one point I had 15 (!!) in my shower. I don't think my husband realized that.

Of all of the hair masks that I tried, these are the ones that I would recommend to someone else.

1. L'Oreal Power Moisture (from Target or Amazon)

2. DermOrganic Intensive Hair Repair Masque (get it at ULTA or Amazon)

3. Brocato Cloud 9 (at Amazon)

4. Kiehl's Superbly Smoothing Argan Hair Pak (from Kiehl's or Nordstrom)

5. Pantene Advanced Keratin Repair (from Amazon)

6. Aussie 3 Minute Miracle (at Amazon)

7. Redken Extreme Strength Builder (get it from ULTA)

8. L'Oreal Total Repair 5 (available at Amazon and ULTA)

9. Joico K-Pak (at ULTA)

Fried Hair Update: What's Working?

how to treat fried, super damaged and dried out hair
Remember a few months ago when I confessed that I fried my hair with my curling iron? And I was in serious need of moisture for my hair? I luckily wasn't so bad off that I needed to cut all of my hair off (thank goodness, because it was the very top layer of my hair and the entire hair shaft. I would have had to basically shave my head!) Instead, I was able to get a haircut and super moisturizing treatment at my salon and things felt much better. Which gave me hope for saving my hair with products.

Since posting my admission, I've had my hair cut twice, both with intensive moisturizing treatments (which made my hair feel like butter, buttttaaah). I've gone a bit crazy with intensive treatments, different shampoos and conditioners, etc. I will fix my fried hair!

There was a lot of stuff that worked for the majority of my hair (which is a bit damaged from highlights and heat styling, but isn't completely fried to a brillo pad consistency), but some of that didn't help those really bad areas on the very top of my head. So, after much searching, trial and error, I have managed to find a few things that have helped. I thought I'd share them here, let me know if you've had a similar experience or found something that works for you (and not all of them are in that picture above). In this post I am only referencing my super damaged areas. I have been trying out some other products as well, and I'll be writing up reviews, but these are all the products that worked the best for my super fried, dried out and frizzy areas.

Just a few comments on my general strategies. I don't wash, dry and style every day. I typically go every other day or every 3 days for washing my hair. Day #2 is usually fine, if I need to squeeze in a day #3 that's when I will go for a bit of dry shampoo.

I've noticed that I can't let my hair air dry. (Which would be nice, wouldn't it? To avoid the heat?) Air drying seems to make it frizzy, frizzy, frizzy and nothing will take that away. So, I need to blow dry.

After my last hair cut, my hair is much easier to style straight rather than curling or leaving my waves in place. So, I dry it straight and then use a flat iron on the frizzy areas. I know that sounds bad, I damaged with heat, and I'm just using more, right? However, I can't get those super frizzy areas to look remotely decent without a little bit of heat. I'm using the HSI 1" Flat Iron, which has a heat selector and can go as low as 140 F. I don't go quite that low, but I use it at a very low setting, go over the area only enough to smooth things out a little, I certainly am not going for perfection. Once slightly flat ironed, my hair then seems to defrizz itself over time (this only happens with the small amount of flat ironing), and day #2 is always the smoothest and softest day for me.

Shampoos & Regular Conditioners
I was a bit surprised at how much different shampoos would affect my hair. I kind of knew it would, but really, I thought the biggest difference would be in which conditioners.

My hair likes gentle shampoos, sulfate free seems to help, and if there is a lot of hydration involved, that is also good. Laid Brand Shady Girl was a good option, as is Pureology Hydrate. Pureology also sent me their new Precious Oil products to try out (pictured here) and I did even better with this line than with Hydrate.

Intensive Treatments
I've found that my super dry area needs to be deeply conditioned at least twice a week. If I'm only washing ever 2-3 days, this means that I'm usually using an intensive hydrating treatment with each washing. I can not take the time to do this the "right"/super hydrating way. Which is to put it on your hair, put on a shower cap or towel or something, and give it a loooong time to sink in and really do the job. Instead, I only have time for the quick and dirty way, to apply it to the damaged areas. I do this after washing, while I'm washing my body and shaving. The steam from the shower does help it sink in and work a bit better, and I probably let it have about 5 minutes to do its job while I'm multitasking.

I do need to clarify that I don't apply the intensive mask treatments to all of my hair each time. About once a week I do all of my hair, but in general I'm applying the intensive treatment to the damaged area and regular conditioner to the rest of my hair.

My favorite Intensive Treatments so far are: Pureology Precious Oil Softening Hair Masque, Agadir Moisture Masque and Bracato Cloud 9 Miracle Repair Treatment. The Pureology was obviously sent to me by Pureology, and is basically just a thick conditioner that works pretty well. The Agadir is more like an almost solid oil masque (it has a lot of Argan Oil in it), but it does not make my hair greasy. Finally, the Bracato has the consistency of a regular conditioner, but is much more moisturizing. It's the same product my stylist used in the salon for my hydrating treatments, so I ordered a giant bottle through Amazon.

I've been rotating through the 3 intensive treatments, which seems to give me the best results. Somehow if I repeat a treatment a few times in a row, it seems to not be as effective, and my hair is more frizzy/dry on those days. If I'm rotating through and use an intensive treatment for every washing, my hair feels much better though not quite normal.

I should mention that there are a few intensive treatments that I mentioned previously which seemed to actually make my damaged area worse. These were all great for the rest of my (just typically) damaged hair, just not good for the very damaged areas.

The first is the infamous Coconut Oil mask. I tried this when I was out of town right after really messing up my hair. I left it in for hours. (I did this in the hotel because my hubby really hates coconut, and really, I didn't have anything else to do.) I was pretty disappointed, my damaged areas were actually worse. They were more frizzy and dry. They were more apparent because the rest of my hair was super hydrated, shiny and looked really healthy without being weighed down. I'm sure I'll try this again when the damaged areas are gone, it really seemed like it was great for my hair otherwise. Just sometime when my hubby is out of town.

The second one was the Paul Mitchell Keratin Intensive Treatment recommended by my stylist. Just like the other treatments, this was great for the rest of my damaged hair, but it truly made the really damaged area feel like straw. I've hoarded my tube away for use after my hair has recovered.

Oils/Styling Products
Finally, I've noticed that there are a few styling products that I need to sneak in to my routine. I am not one of those people that uses the same item each time, I'll randomly grab a mousse and throw it in if I think that I *might* possibly consider curling my hair the next day. I'll use a leave in conditioner randomly (it doesn't really help much, so I feel like it is a stupid extra step, but then I sometimes feel guilty and thrown some in to the mix). But, there are 2 things that I'm always adding in now.

While I'd used hair oils previously, I've switched from Shu Uemura's Essence Absolue to a L'Oreal. While I've loved the Shu for years (I'm still using that same bottle from my review over 2 years ago, and I use it at least 4-5x/week), for some strange reason the L'Oreal EverSleek Precious Oil Treatment does a much better job on those damaged areas. It smooths and softens like no other. I just use a little in my palm and rub it over wet hair, then use a wide tooth comb to evenly distribute it.

Next, I grab about a nickel size of Garnier Frucis Sleek and Shine Anti-Humidity Smoothing Milk, which I also comb through my hair. I used this a lot years ago, and I randomly grabbed a bottle (it was on an end cap when I was at the grocery store), and I've found that it really helps to keep all the hard work I've put into my hair lasting longer. Without it, things do get frizzy and dry looking again. This really allows me to go 2-3 days without feeling too straw-like or frizzy.

So, after all of that rambling, I'm sure there are only about 2 or 3 people still reading. If you've had this same problem, please let me know! I'd love to know what intensive treatments have worked for you.

Phillip Kingsley Shampoo and Conditioner Review: More Volume? Yes Please!

Phillip Kingsley Shampoo and Conditioner Review
I'm on a big shampoo and conditioner testing kick lately, and this is the first of the new products that I have to share with you. Philip Kingsley has a great shampoo and conditioner duo for those that want more volume.

While I have a lot of hair, I currently feel like my hair is a bit flat (for me), because I've yet to fully recover from all the hair shedding I underwent a few months ago. (You know that big hair fall out after pregnancy? I kinda got that. Then after my daughter stopped nursing about 3 months ago I really got it again. Ugh!) Anyways, I have volume, but I'm used to more. Give me mooooore!

This duo is formulated for fine hair to offer more volume. It definitely does that, but I thought it was interesting that it does it while also nicely hydrating hair. I feel like many volumizers don't offer much moisture, and vice versa. It definitely had more hydration for my dry hair than most volumizers, but it didn't weigh it down at all. My hair was bouncy and very easy to stye, which I loved!

With the shampoo and conditioner, I tried out the Elasticizer, which if your hair has any damage/strength issues, I can say you'll definitely want to try out! Apparently this product was originally created for Audrey Hepburn (confession: This makes me want to love it.) It is a pre-shampoo treatment. You leave the white conditioner-ish stuff in your hair for about 10-15 minutes and then you shampoo and condition as usual. It really seemed to help my damaged hair, it was much healthier appearing and stronger. Loved it!

Dear David: What's the Deal With Sulfates?

sulfates in shampoo, damaged hair

So, for years I've heard that sulfates are something to avoid in hair care and skin care products. I know it can cause irritation and dryness for skin, but what do they do to the hair?
Thanks!

-Christine (Yes, me! On the phone with David)

Sulfates are primarily used for creating a more lathering effect in your hair products. They do help to clean the hair, but as they remove product build up, they take everything out of the hair like natural oils. Your hair will definitely feel more dry when you just shampoo it, you need to add some things (eg- the benefits of those natural oils) back into the hair with conditioner.

Wait, I know the lather doesn't really help us get any cleaner, but we all just love the lather!
-Christine

Without the lather you really feel like you're not getting the cleaning effect. But, often you are really getting clean. That's the whole thing behind those **** products (product name removed to protect the innocent). I don't feel like my hair gets clean with them. It tried it and I felt like something was wrong. I stopped using them.

As you use them, sulfates will strip your hair and can affect your scalp, leaving it dry. The weather here (David is in Florida) can affect the scalp a lot as the humidity shifts. Your scalp gets dry and itchy, you scratch and flake. As you scratch you're harming the surface of your scalp, opening it up. You have areas that aren't quite healthy, they're irritated and harmed. Add on some products, maybe alcohol based styling products for example, then it irritates the scalp further and the whole thing gets even worse. It's a vicious cycle, setting you up for an unhealthy and irritated scalp.

Some people say there isn't much effect from what is in your shampoo, but think about this... There are so many things going into your shampoo. If you can eliminate some of those harsher chemicals without an issue, then it's better.

Laid Brand Shady Girl Shampoo and Conditioner Review: Do Pheromones Make a Difference?

Laid Brand Shady Girl Shampoo and Conditioner review
Last week I had my hair cut and colored. As always, after paying that much money for hair color, I left the salon swearing that I'd do everything in my power to help my color last as long as possible and to keep my hair as healthy as possible. Which means that I immediately swapped out the shampoo and conditioner in my shower for this new duo from Laid Brand, Shady Girl.

First, this duo does everything that a good product for color treated hair should. It's sulfate free and gentle, so it won't strip the expensive color right out. They've gone the extra steps of adding some SPF to the shampoo (I'm forever hiding my hair from the sun all summer long!) and there are coconut oil, avocado, and olive oil to help hydrate your hair and keep it healthy.

The products are pretty concentrated, so a little does go quite a long way. They are pretty thick, and I've found that my ADHD tendencies mean I don't have the patience to deal with their pumps and I just use the pump straws like dipping sticks to help me get the product out. (They do come out of the pumps, I just think they're pretty thick and I am a highly impatient shower person.) I found that the shampoo has a great lather, especially when you take into account the lack of sulfates. The conditioner did a great job of making my hair feel amazing, I swear every time I rinse it out my hair just feels healthier. Both rinsed out really easily.

The real reason that I love both of these products is actually what happens outside of the shower. My hair has looked healthier and seems to be easier to style when I'm using these products! I actually tested this out by going back to my old stand-bys, Abba Pure Moisture Shampoo & Conditioner. I ended up throwing them away. Really. My hair is much more cooperative and shinier with the Laid Brand products, they'll be the ones featured on my next "Everyday Favorites" post!

And finally, what about those pheromones?

I've had a discussion about this brand with a few friends and family members, and it always centers around Laid Brand's niche, the little ingredient that sets it apart from other products. Those little chemicals that our noses smell and our brains interpret to help us feel a certain way or to be attracted to certain things. I heard a lot of skeptical remarks about whether they make a difference or could actually get you laid.

David L Hensley, Laid Brand CCO says, "The pheromones are really to make you more attractive to yourself. To make you feel more confident and feel empowerment. Having you feel your own energy and have that just radiating from you." Which makes sense, right? You aren't the skunk in Looney Tunes, Pepe le Pew had his scent to help him attract a woman. You really want to attract someone just by being yourself. "This confidence will help you attract a great person," David says.

So, are the pheromones overwhelming? I don't think so. I've been using the products for a while now, and to me they just smell like regular shampoo and conditioner. Note that there is Menthol as the carrier for the pheromone, so when I apply the conditioner there is a little tingly smell but it isn't overwhelming at all. (And no, it isn't like I've just used Vick's VapoRub!) They smell pretty similar to me, though there is the menthol tingle and a little bit more minty-ness to the conditioner. Otherwise they are both floral/fruity perfume scents that are pretty subtle and I can't smell either of them on my hair once I've rinsed them out.

Do I notice a difference with the pheromones? I do feel more confident in how I look. I can't say "yes, this effect is from the pheromones" for sure. Because you know what? I think some of that confidence come from just having my hair look good. Which these products definitely help with. Good hair or pheromones? I'm not sure I care what made me feel good about myself on a given day!

- None in the shampoo, Yes in the conditioner though they're in the middle of the ingredient list.
