Maybelline Foam Foundation Review: Does the Foam Ensure a Smooth Application?

Maybelline Foam Foundation review

So, I bought this foaming foundation months ago. I've been too lazy/busy to write about it. Also, I kind of wondered if I was wrong about it and I should try it again? So, the truth is that I hate this stuff.

The basic idea is that the foundation foams up and is light and frothy, so when you apply it the application is light and easy to blend around, looking perfect in the end. It comes out of the can fairly quickly and it has a strange spongy/foamy texture. I thought you needed to see it to believe it, so I made you a little video.

Maybelline Foam Foundation review

The problem is the color of the foundation. I often can wear Classic Ivory in Maybelline products, but shortly after it comes out of the can the color changes from what looks appropriate for Classic Ivory to something much more... Oompa Loompa. Seriously, it is orange. The pics above are about 20 seconds apart. I fully admit I touched it to show the formula a bit (hence the dent in pic #3), though the video does a better job of that.

So, while it does do a good job of create a smooth look and, for me it only looks good for a very short period of time.

Stay clear of this product, the color match will be horrible.

Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation Review

foundation, foundation primer and concealer reviews
Laura Mercier Oil Free Supreme Foundation Review
Laura Mercier says that this foundation has a "soft matte" finish, a phrase that sold me right away. I'm a girl with combination skin, the idea of no shine.... yes, very appealing!

Consistency: Liquid foundation
Blendability: Easily blended, I recommend finishing with a sponge (I like my Beauty Blender) for a flawless finish
Buildable coverage: Yes
Feeling on skin: Lightweight
Wear: 12-14 hours
Problems with wear: No caking, doesn't settle into fine lines
Shades Available: 12 shades are available, I used warm ivory

There is one little quirk to this foundation. Do not pair it with Stila's BB Cream, which is basically a foundation primer. I'm not sure why, but the two don't seem to like each other and the result is orange foundation with spotty coverage after about 6-8 hours.

With any other primer (or lack of primer) this foundation looks perfect for 12-14 hours and doesn't change colors. I've found myself reaching for it over and over.

The Beauty Blender Sponge Review: Does that Pink Egg Make a Difference?

beauty blender sponge makeup, review
In a word: Yes. It really does.

For years I've been using my fingers, brushes and those wedge shaped sponges to help apply and blend foundation. I switched to round flat ones for a while, purely because Kevin Aucoin mentioned them in one of his books. I think I don't have his amazing touch, because that little swap did not go well.

Anyways, when the Beauty Blender came out a few years ago, I definitely had my doubts. How could that sponge make that much of a difference? The last sponge swap didn't go as planned. I certainly wasn't going to give up my $3.50 for a bag of 50 sponges for something so expensive.

Oh, how wrong I was.

This sponge really is different, and yes, it does make my foundation look better than other methods of blending. I should have bought one years ago.

To use, rather than rubbing it across my skin like I've done with other sponges, I buff and bounce it on my skin. The shape lets me customize which part of the sponge I'm using in certain areas (such as the smaller pointy end near my nose and eyes), and the entire thing is easily washable. In fact, I get much better results if I use this sponge while it is very slightly damp. I get a small amount of water on it, squeeze to distribute, and then blend my makeup. Before I leave the sink area I simply rinse it out again with water or wash it with a mild face wash if it needs it (note to self: pick up the recommended cleanser during my next Sephora run).

So, yes, this was an upgrade for me. Definitely worth it.

5 Year of Favorite Products: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation Primer

Make Up For Ever HD Foundation Primer, MUFE, review
I'm not an every day foundation primer girl, but when I am this is the one I reach for between product review periods. It is lightweight, helps create a flawless finish and doesn't interfere with makeup application (yes, some primers actually do!)

You can check out my MUFE HD Foundation Primer Review for more details.

MAC Matchmaster: The Foundation Answer for the Hard to Match?

MAC Matchmaster, foundation, review
Recently, MAC released a new line of foundation that promises to be completely different from all of their other foundations. The pigments are different. The idea is that the pigments are encapsulated within little spheres, which helps to reflect light and in theory make the pigments blend more easily with your skin tone. Rather than needing that "perfect match" that we all find so elusive, you should be able to take a foundation that is in the ballpark, put it on, and since it mixes with your own skin tone you'll look fab.

In addition, this foundation has a demi-matte finish with oil reduction capabilities (sounds amazing to this combination skin girl), a medium coverage that is buildable and soft focus powders to help soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles. For real.

Affordable Air Brushed Foundation? Aero Minerale Might Be Just The Thing...

Aero Minerale Foundation
I fully admit that a perfect air brushed look appeals to me. However I don't have a few hundred laying around to dump on a Temptu, and the more expensive spray on foundations don't come light enough for my skin (I'm looking at you, Dior). And let's face it, $62 is still a lot more than I want to spend on a foundation.

Anyways, Classified Cosmetics makes a line of aerosol makeup, which I've heard pretty good things about. They've just released a lower priced version, Aero Minerale. Aero Minerale will be available on their website, at 52 Walmarts across the country (mine is not one of them unfortunately) and on Walmart.com. Which means you won't need to take out a second mortgage to afford air brushed makeup!

Read on to see if it works.

Rock On with Napoleon Perdis: A New Mineral Makeup

Rock On with Napoleon Perdis: A New Mineral Makeup, review
It sometimes seems that everyone has jumped on to the mineral makeup bandwagon except me. My friend Nadine of Nadine Jolie is especially a fan of mineral makeup. It really works for her too, the girl looks airbrushed in person. Like, sitting a few feet away she is perfect. I can only aspire to such amazing looking makeup.

So, why haven't I just started using it? Unfortunately, pretty much every mineral makeup I've tried (especially that big brand with the stores in the mall, yes, you know the one I mean) seems to give me some sort of skin rash. I get hivey, itchy redness. It's not cool.

So, I was excited to hear about the new makeup from Napoleon Perdis. A mineral makeup that is in liquid form seemed to me like something that my skin my enjoy a bit more. With the time saving benefits of a liquid foundation (really, I think smearing something around with my fingers and then buffing a little with a sponge or brush is fastest), this foundation promises the great color matching and oil absorbing capabilities of a mineral foundation.

Advanced Mineral Makeup is the liquid foundation, really it is a thick lotion in consistency. It is insanely easy to apply perfectly. I put a few dots on the areas I want to cover (primarily my t-zone), smear with a few finger tips, then I grab a little triangle makeup sponge and blend around my nose for about 5 seconds. Overall, this is a light-medium coverage foundation. If I want more coverage I repeat this process in those areas. Done. The makeup looks flawless on my skin (Look 2 is a perfect match for me, most people are Look 3 according to my contacts at Napoleon Perdis). I found that the foundation does help my skin stay a bit more matte than it would otherwise, though alone it isn't quite enough for my combination skin mid-summer. It does last all day, I still look great when it is time to head to bed.

Advanced Mineral has a companion product, the Mattifying Mineral Primer. Yes, it is a powder primer to go under your liquid makeup. I thought this was the craziest thing ever when the products first arrived at my home, but they do work together just fine. There is no resulting goopiness. None.

The first really cool thing about this primer is the dispenser. Instead of the typical sifter, the little contraption you see above is in the hinge area. When the lid is closed, the bottom oval is opened to the dispense powder. Shake, and 1 application's worth of powder will come up to be dispensed. Because of the way it seals you won't have excess powder released, which makes a huge difference over the typical sifter. I hate the sifter, I always end up with too much powder that goes everywhere. This is an amazing solution and I want this on every loose powder product I own.

The primer is a bit heavier than a typical powder. It has a yellow tint, what you see in my pic above in not a trick of the lighting. That's the color of the product. I use a big kabuki style brush to apply the powder to my t-zone, buffing to ensure a light and flawless application. I can't tell that it is on my skin and the yellow tint does help to reduce any redness.

The primer helps quite a bit with shininess in my t-zone, though it wasn't quite enough to keep my matte. To be fair, I was testing during a very hot time mid-summer, and it would likely be great for winter. The primer can be used as a powder to help set the foundation and cut down on shine. I found that it is too heavy to work well for me this way. I have a hard time getting it to look flawless, it comes across as too heavy in different areas. The yellow tint is just too much for me to use over the foundation as well, so I've been using regular powder instead.

Overall I really liked this duo. I've found myself reaching for it in the morning, well beyond my testing period. I'll definitely keep using it!

The foundation has SPF 15.

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation, review
I bought this foundation months, and months and months ago. Like, the day the display appeared at my local big box store. I keep trying it out, trying to figure out if I like it or not. I truthfully haven't decided yet.

Finding the exact right shade is not quite as easy as it seems. Phyrra found #110 too pink for her fair complexion while Pammy thought the #115 was a bit too orange, #110 was better for her. My complexion is usually closer to Pammy's, though I'm tone-wise a bit closer to Phyrra. I tried out #115, which was a good fit for my overall paleness, but definitely too pink for me. Us super pale girls, we're not just a dime a dozen. Oh no, we come in many different shades of pale, and it appears that finding just the right shade, even in a product line with many pale shades, is difficult. I wish the shades were neutral, yellow based tones or were labelled warm/cool, similar to Maybelline's sister L'Oreal does for their True Match line.

I fully admit that most tinted moisturizers aren't quite moisturizing enough for my dry cheeks, nor do they usually contain the sunscreen I want. I don't want to put tinted moisturizer everywhere, only certain areas. So, I tend to cheat and use it over a sunscreen lotion usually. Sometimes this makes things a bit too hydrating and hard to blend in correctly since I'm basically applying moisturizer over moisturizer.

Fit Me is definitely a light coverage foundation, with a somewhat dewy finish. I found it to be close to a tinted moisturizer in terms of coverage, so for me this is a tinted moisturizer alternative. I apply it over my sunscreen lotion, allowing plenty of time for the lotion to sink in. Fit Me seems to be somewhat picky about blending, as any lotion residue really prevents it from blending easily. I also found that any foundation brushes should stay far away as they just encourage streaking, instead use your fingers and a makeup sponge. The foundation can be layered for slightly more coverage, but I couldn't get close to a medium coverage no matter what I did.

I found that the foundation lasts on me for about 6-8 hours, if I've applied extra for increased coverage I'll have areas of caking as well. I do like that the coverage is light, so it's great for the summer, but not an all day foundation for me.

Fit Me Foundation has SPF 18.

Mark Min-A-Real Foundation

As part of my on-going life goal of being able to fit everything I need into a 3-1-1 bag and travel with carry on luggage only, I gave the new Mark Creme foundation a whirl.

The product is a cream to powder foundation that promises medium coverage and easy application. I tried out Nude, slightly dark for me, though the formula was somewhat forgiving since it didn't look like it was a shade too dark once bended out.

The compact has a decent sized mirror filling the top, underneath is a round cosmetic sponge for application. I love that the area underneath is actually rather large, you could replace that sponge with your own if you wanted to without worrying about fit.

The foundation is a thick cream and applies easily with the sponge. I found that if I used the sponge I would have very full coverage, I preferred to use my fingertips and then blend in with the sponge, this gives me medium coverage. The coverage is enough that it isn't really flawless invisible coverage (no one looks that good in real life), but it looks great. Lasts most of the day (~10 hours) without caking or fading issues.

Overall I definitely liked this foundation, I'll be purchasing it in the correct shade and you can be sure it will be my go-to travel foundation.

Fusion Beauty's Prime Results: The Tinted Moisturizer I'm Using Every Day

fusion beauty prime results tinted moisturizer spf 15
Every spring I start talking about "lightening up" on makeup for the hot and humid summer months. Who wants to wear heavy foundation in mid July? But, the reality is that I haven't really found a tinted moisturizer to love. While there are a few that I've been willing to recommend as "decent" tinted moisturizers (such as the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, Philosophy Hope in a Tinted Moisturizer or Tarte Smooth Operator), the truth is that I haven't been using them myself. The products are all nice, but they just haven't been quite right for me. They're a little too much moisture for my combination skin, don't work well with a SPF product or they aren't enough coverage over my melasma or freckles. Something is always slightly off, inducing me to reach for a light weight foundation instead (Neutrogena Healthy Skin is my fave).

Well, I've finally found a tinted moisturizer with just enough coverage to cover up enough of my skin issues, allow my skin to shine through and it even has some of the bonus items that I love in moisturizer. Such as a little UV coverage and some ingredients to help fight aging.

Prime Results includes a built in primer, so during application it feels a bit different from other tinted moisturizers. It feels like lightweight silicone based product, but a bit airier in feeling that most silicone primers that I've tried in the past (really, I'm thinking of the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer). It feels smooth during application, and you can feel it sinking into your skin pretty much right away. I literally smear this around for about 10 seconds with my fingers, hit any problem areas with a cosmetic sponge to blend them a little better (usually around my nose) and I'm done.

The moisturizer provides a little more coverage than most tinted moisturizers, but it isn't obvious at all. It looks like my skin is just... better. It covers my little residual bits of melasma from being pregnant, a couple of stray freckles and it still doesn't look like I have anything on. Love it!

Concealer Review Series: How and Where to Use Concealer and Corrector

concealer and corrector review series
Back when I was entering my 3rd trimester, I was thinking about what topics I would be interested in covering shortly after my daughter arrived. I would need something interesting enough to spend a little time on it, rather than simply staring at the baby. (She's super cute as she sleeps! Obviously I must watch this for hours!)

Anyways, I decided that the things I would be most interested in would be speeding up my routine to get ready in a jiffy (hence, spending even more time staring at the baby) and looking for ways to look awake while I do so. I started to work on a concealer review series. A lot of my favorite brands have decided to participate, from Revlon and Cover Girl to Estée Lauder, Elizabeth Arden and even QVC favorite Dalton! The series currently has over 20 concealers, and will go on for quite a while. Watch for a new concealer review every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

In the meantime, I thought I'd share what info I have in my brain about undereye circles and taking care of them to look more awake. I've accumulated a lot of little tips over my years of beauty blogging, but most of them came from being a beauty obsessed medical student and resident. So, this post is ~90% reviewing covering up undereye circles.

Philosophy's Hope in a Tinted Moisturizer: Finally a Tinted Moisturizer with Sunscreen and Anti-Aging!

Philosophy's Hope in a Tinted Moisturizer, review
Now that I'm a new mommy, I've been looking for ways to pare down my morning routine. Or at least inject a little beauty into the days that I can barely brush my teeth.

Combining my foundation and moisturizer seems like the perfect thing to do. I can't go without moisturizer (the dry parts of my combination skin will hate me) and goodness knows I look a lot better with at least a light coverage of something on my face.

Unfortunately, most tinted moisturizers mean giving up everything I look for in a moisturizer (other than the actual moisture). Like the sunscreen (I like SPF 15 at least, as broad spectrum as I can get) and any anti-aging ingredients that I can squeeze in for daily use.

So, I was pretty happy that Philosophy released this new tinted moisturizer. Check out the sunscreen, SPF 20 with some UVA and UVB coverage. There are even some anti-aging ingredients in this formula, so I get to check a few ingredient categories off of my anti-aging checklist.

I love that rather than being a regular tube of tinted moisturizer, this is actually dispensed by a pump (1 pump is the perfect amount for most of my face by the way). The sunscreen scent is minimal. The coverage is light. It all sinks in easily and the only blending I have to do is with my fingers. I can apply this on the go. Meaning, running from my daily toothbrushing to my daughter's room while lamenting another day without my full makeup routine. For the rest of you, this is a great way to lighten up your routine for spring!

Per-Fekt Skin Perfection Gel: Perfect Skin in a Pump?

I remember being confused by this product when it was introduced a few years ago and was featured in different magazines and blogs. A gel? That provides coverage? Huh?

Ignore the gel part. Basically, this product is a light tinted moisturizer with the primer and a mattifier included. It even contains a few ingredients that are anti-aging (the anti-oxidants Vitamins A and E). Once I started ignoring the "gel" that is actually in the name of this product the whole thing made more sense to me.

Overall I really loved this product. It is a light gel (yes, can't really describe it any other way) that has some tinting to it. It feels like a typical silicone based primer when it goes on, though a little lighter in feeling. The coverage is very light (I used Luminous if you are curious), though it does help even out my skin tone a little bit, perfect for the weekends. For days that I need a bit more coverage, I've found it works great as a primer under other foundations. My pores are reduced and foundation applies more evenly.

I think my favorite part of this product is the mattifying effect. It doesn't super mattify my skin like using milk of magnesia does, but instead helps absorb about 95% of my oil. This is actually a much more flattering look for me, since the super matte...mmm... not so natural looking. I'll be reaching for this gel a lot!
