Managing Madness, Motherhood, and a Morning Make-Up Routine!

Today's post has been brought to us by my cousin Ellery from Mom's Life Made Easy. (Ok, if you want to be really technical, Ellery is my husband's cousin. But, I luvs her and claim her as my own.) Ellery lives in the San Diego area and has 3 kids under the age of 5. She somehow manages to blog, live a normal life and always make it look really, really easy. Like having 3 little ones didn't phase her at all. And she still looks perfect and relaxed. It's rather inspiring, really.

Watch for more posts from Ellery in the future as I've forced enlisted her to write a few sunless tanner reviews! I've embraced the pale, but she loves being tan and has definite opinions about what makes a great sunless tanner.

I have often been asked, "how in the world do you look so put together in the morning?"  This saying is usually said with an expression of pure shock and awe as if this Mommy had never heard of such a thing! My response, "it is called managing the chaos and prioritizing."

Now I understand that not every Mommy feels it is important to put on make-up every morning, and oh how I wish that were me...but with the purple acne scars and the dark under-eye circles I find I am asked "are you feeling ok?" when I go without! I also know that if I take 15 minutes to do my hair and makeup in the morning, I will feel better about myself all day long.

So for all of you out there who want to do your makeup daily, but don't think you have the time-you do, and here is how I do it with 3 kids.

I try to get in the shower before the kids wake up, and just do the fastest shampoo and conditioning I can do (I love Pureology Hydrate, and have tried so many others over the years but keep going back).  My hair is super fine and pretty thin and Pureology works wonders on it!

After the shower I quickly put moisturizer on my face (ROC) and my eyes (ROC eye treatment), and my body (I only use Amlactin for my eczema).  I quickly brush my wet hair and put in some Tigi Smoothing Lusterizer.  This stuff works great to smooth without any greasiness showing! Great for fine hair.

Then I let it all dry as I am doing my morning routine of waking the kids (ages 4, 3, and 10 months), giving them milk, feeding them, and dressing them.  Help from the hubby before he goes to work makes this move along smoothly.

After the kids are ready to go, I get a chance to dress (clothes and shoes I laid out the night before), and finish my hair and makeup.  I must admit that the hair usually consists of a pony-tail, but the make-up I never go without!

I really like to use a concealer that goes on super quick and with no drying time.  I like full coverage so that I do not have to spend too much time with concealer.  Right now I like the Make Up For Ever HD foundation, or the MAC Studio Tech (depending upon my mood).  After the quick application of foundation with a brush, I use concealer on my upper eye.  I like the MAC paint pot in Painterly.  It covers all of the darkness I have from lack of sleep and does not allow my shadow to cake up.  Next, I use a regular concealer with a brush to quickly go over every purple spot I have and my dark under eye circles.  For this I use MAC Studio Finish Concealer that matches my foundation exactly.  I use my finger to quickly smooth it out.  Now that I have my "face" on (in about 5 minutes), I am ready for the eye shadows.  I must admit that as much as I love makeup, I tend to stick with the exact same color choices every morning because they are so quick and easy.

I apply my eyeshadow in two steps, a white powder for under my brow bone and in the corner of my eye lids (I like MAC Crystal Avalanche).  I then put a little pink over my entire lid (MAC Girlie).  After shadow comes a quick eyeliner in brown so that I look more awake.  I like the MAC eyeliner in coffee because it goes on very smoothly with one application, and is not as harsh as a black eyeliner.  I then use a quick application of mascara, and quick lip gloss or neutral lipstick shade (total time at about 10 minutes).  Then most days I am done...but if I can find another second I love to finish off with my eyebrows.

I used to do my brows with an angled brush and some powder (MAC Omega) and just fill it in, but now I found a faster way.  I use my stencil from Anastasia's brow collection, which I bought after having my brows done there so I could upkeep them at home.  I lay the stencil over my entire brow, line up the lines for the center, and apply the powder with a rounded head brush over the entire thing.  The stencil comes off with a perfectly formed brow underneath-and only took about 3 seconds.

Total elapsed time is 15 minutes; more if I did my hair :)

Now I am done, and ready to start the day feeling better about myself.

As my hubby says, "a happy mommy makes a happy home!"

Mommy Beauty: Addressing Post Partum Hair at the Salon

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
Today, George Gonzalez, Salon Owner of the George the Salon in Chicago has tips on how to cope with the post part partum hair blues! He has some great recommendations, some of which I've already done (I've gone closer to my natural brown), wear frequently (the pony tail) and have been thinking about doing (a long bob? Maybe...)

Bobs are the easiest and most stylish way to maintain a great look while pregnant or soon after giving birth. Bobs can be cut a few different ways in order to accentuate your best features or to minimize a fuller face during the later months of pregnancy. In general, choosing a shorter length will make life easier. If you prefer long hair, I recommend growing out some of your layers. Trying to keep the style as simple as possible is your best option. Some bangs or face framing will add some shape. It will also when your hair starts to grow back. After you stop nursing you will experience some hair loss, which is perfectly normal. Bangs help with that as well.

As for color, soon after receiving the great news that you are expecting, I recommend heading toward your natural color; as it is the easiest to maintain. You may not have the opportunity to get to the salon for months. If you are a blond, I recommend getting fewer highlights and staying away from base softeners. You may want to go natural all together.

For styling, high ponytails are easy and can be very stylish.

New Mommy Beauty: 3 Baby Products That Work Well for Beauty Needs

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers

Today's post is from Nikkia of Silver Lips Beauty. I've been lucky enough to meet Nikkia a few times, and she really is one of the nicest people I've ever met. She looks perfect at all times (I'm not sure how she does this, I'm pretty jealous of this ability), loves music and has great swatch pictures on her blog. She's a pro makeup artist and her tips are always amazing!

I always get interesting stares from my friends and family when I prance myself onto the baby aisles at most stores. I have no babies yet but that aisle houses some of the best beauty products ever. Here are three of my all time favorite baby products that I love using on myself.

In no particular order:
Baby Shampoo – this product is excellent for washing makeup brushes. If it’s gentle enough for a baby, it has to be gentle enough for our little beauty investments right?

Baby Wipes- not only is this great for removing makeup, I’ve even used these to remove small foundation stains and mascara accidents. Another plus is that you get a bang for your buck, especially for new moms since these will always be on hand.

• And lastly good ole’ Vaseline – most new moms use Vaseline for a host of reasons from soothing diaper rash, cradle cap, teething pain to removing stickiness from the eyes. But a beauty junkie may be using this for slightly different reasons, like as a eyebrow sealant, or as a nightly beauty cream or even a hair grease. No matter the use babies and adults alike find hundreds of ways to make this centuries old product work.

What are some baby products you use for your beauty needs?

PS Diaper rash cream works wonders on dry patches in the winter ☺

A Quick Tip for Soft Feet!

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers

Today's new mommy tip is definitely one of those tips that will work great for any one, and it is one I never would have thought of myself. It comes from Romy, of Romy Raves. Romy not only a very busy beauty blogger, but she co-owns a very successful marketing research and consulting firm and on top of all that is mom to a 7 year old son. I'm tired just thinking about everything she does! If anyone has great (and fast) beauty tips, it is Romy!

Here’s my tip for either swollen pregnant feet or very dry feet: At night before bed, wipe down both feet with a Stridex Pad (super cheap, slightly cooling, you can find it at any drugstore and they contain Salicylic Acid which is great for exfoliation). After you have really wiped each foot well, slather your feet with favorite foot cream (I am loving QTICA’s thick rich Foot Repair Balm during these dry winter months), put on a cute and cozy pair of socks and wake up in the morning with soft, happy & hydrated feet!

I've been rushed in the morning for years, but will fully admit I have no where near as many tips for this as she does. As I'm about to end my maternity leave and head back to work, I'm definitely reading this list with great interest! -Christine

New Mommy Beauty: Time to Pamper Mom

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
Today's guest post is from Jennifer over at Raging Rouge. Her blog is one of the most comprehensive beauty blogs I know of, full of great makeup looks from experts, in depth product reviews and even product features for baby and children's products!

Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Oasis Body Wash
When my son was a newborn, and I would sit up with him in the wee hours of the morning in a semi-delirious sleep-deprived state, my thoughts would drift to my favorite day spa. It seemed so long ago that I had been able to indulge myself in such a luxury. A 90 minute massage... A body scrub and masque... I would practically drool, so strong was my desire for pampering.

If only I had Peter Thomas Roth Botanical Oasis Body Wash at the time. The use of the word "oasis" in the product name is more than appropriate. This body wash is like a 5 minute visit to a day spa, but in the convenience of your own home. The luxurious lather softens the skin, and leaves a faint heavenly scent that even reminds me of my favorite spa. They call the scent "red tea and bergamot", I just call it yummy.

Stay well, and enjoy any "me" time you get!

New Mommy Beauty: Your Hair Issues ARE Different!

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
Today we get more info on the special issues of post-partum hair from Daniel Keane, Educator and Platform Artist for IT&LY HAIRFASHION. It turns out there's a reason for the bady hair days!

For new mothers there is a completely different set of issues. There is often a great deal of hair lost in the first 6 months after giving birth. Mom’s body is trying to return to normal after the prenatal vitamins and if she is nursing a great deal of her body’s energy is going to producing nutrition for her child. Hair and nails seem to suffer in this time and this is a great time to get deep conditioning treatments. The hair loss is temporary and once her body returns to normal function the hair typically does as well.

Another issue for moms is finding time to deal with their hair on a regular basis including daily styling. Often this is a time when having enough hair to just pull back is the case, however, we often hear moms lament that they just don't feel attractive at this point. Many times, once the baby begins to grab and pull their hair, we get requests for shorter, easy to style haircuts. This can be an exciting time for mom and stylist to create something new and sexy with a cut and color. If mom opts to keep her length we try to teach her how to use accessories to create more finished looks with her longer hair.

Quick Beauty Tips from Beauty Girl Musings

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
Beauty Girl Musings
Today's collection of tips is brought to us by my friend Monique, over at Beauty Girl Musings. I'm so honored that she had so many great tips to share with us! Monique truly is amazing. At blogger events I'm usually found near her since I like being with her so much. She's incredibly nice and funny, not to mention she somehow always looks perfect. She lives in Southern California where she blogs and lives with her family (including 2 great kids!). Did I mention that she is a licenced esthetician? And she has a new fitness blog, Fit Girl Musings?

• To give lips a pretty, rosy hue exfoliate lips with your toothbrush, then follow up with your favorite sheer lipstick or gloss. Lips will look smooth and more natural.

• To add instant volume to hair, flip head over and brush hair. You can use a hair dryer for added help or if your hair is damp.

• Rim the upper inside rim of your eyes with black eyeliner (like the waterline on lower lashline, but on top) before applying mascara. Not only will you hide the mascara marks that inevitably end up there, but lashes will look fuller and more lush. I do this every day, and it makes such a difference!

• Keep your eye cream or gel in the fridge-- it's a great treat in the morning and especially for tried, puffy eyes. Let it sink in for about 10 minutes before you apply your makeup. Puffiness be gone!

• If you want your heavier-coverage liquid foundation to be more sheer, mix it with a pea size amount of moisturizer in the palm of your hand, then apply to face and blend into your neck.

• For close set eyes, apply a light colored shimmery shadow on the inside corners of your eyes to create an illusion of wider set eyes.

Do Your Makeup with 1 Product

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers
Recently, The Globe and Mail featured a great video showing a makeup artist creating a fresh, glowy look using just 1 product in about 90 seconds. Obviously I would want to do this including other products (like concealer for the new mommy under eye circles and probably mascara since going without makes me feel naked), but I loved this idea.

The product used appears to be Stila one step makeup primecolor, which I bought in December from a Stila Warehouse sale on-line for a whopping $5 I think. The color comes in what looks like a lip gloss tube (it even has an angled tip applicator), and is fairly pigmented. I like that you can easily control how much product you dispense, though I recommend initially squeezing it out on to the back of your hand to warm it up and from there applying using your fingertips. It is pretty easy to blend and once you've started blending you have about 30-60 seconds to get whatever look you want. I've used it as eye shadow and blush, but not on my lips yet. The color lasts all day and my results were definitely glow worthy as well.

Pregnancy, Skin Care, Cosmetics, Ingredients to Avoid
I thought with all of the discussion about skin care during pregnancy (first with what topical ingredients to avoid during pregnancy and then which skin care products you can actually use while pregnant) that I'd share with you what has been hiding in the corner of my office. It's a little box of products that have made their way to me that I just could not say no to trying out, but that I have to wait until after delivery to try out.

What products sparked enough interest and excitement that they've been sitting in that box, waiting for me?

• Makeup removal wipe: I personally love Neutrogena's, but many brands make these and you don't need a sink to wash your face!
• Eye drops: your eyes won't always be shiny and bright due to lack of sleep, so these are fabulous!
• A Luxurious Body Wash: Showers are so much more appreciated as a new mom. sometimes it's the only time you get alone, so yummy bath goodies are great.

New Mommy Beauty: Hair Tips from White Sands' Fernando Salas

Mommy, New Mom, Beauty, Tricks, Hints, Time Savers

Fernando Salas is the CEO & Creator of White Sands Hair care, a brand that I've had great luck with in the past. Fernando started as a hair dresser, and with his family built up the White Sands brand, creating amazing products that really do give the amazing results they promise. My favorite White Sands product is probably The Fix, which I use 3-4 times a week, creating shine and making my hair look healthier.

Fernando had some great tips about hair color during pregnancy and avoiding horrible roots!

For a mom who wants color or highlights, but has limited time to visit a salon: Opt for subtle highlights meaning few in number which will make your color last longer because this will not show re-growth. Have your stylist choose the tone of the highlights from the flex of your eyes. But, make sure your colorist does not bleach then tone, because the tone in the bleach will fade and you will be left with white hair. (Thus showing re-growth) Compliment your subtle highlights with White Sands Color Secure Shampoos and Conditioners to make your color last even longer at home.

We see a great number of women going through pregnancy and of course as new or experienced moms. There are some noticeable differences in the hair of these women at different phases of pregnancy and certainly post-partum.

Pregnant women typically experience increased hair growth (length and thickness) due to their bodily changes occurring during pregnancy and as a result of pre-natal vitamins. For women with normally thin or wimpy hair, this can be a real bonus (hair and nails like they have never had before!). We also often see hair texture change from curly to straight or vice versa. This can also be a bonus for some while a not so welcome change for others depending on what they are used to.

During pregnancy the condition of the hair tends to be pretty nice so we focus on keeping it trimmed and we don't hesitate to do color services. This is a question we receive quite often "can I color my hair during pregnancy"? The answer is of course you can. Today’s color products are so advanced and nothing we use on the hair for color will be absorbed into the skin so there is nothing to fear. Hair color can be a wonderful way to make a pregnant woman feel beautiful at a time when her body is changing so dramatically.

New Mommy Beauty: Skin Care While Pregnant

Pregnant and Pregnancy skincare
Pregnant and Pregnancy skincare
A few days ago I shared with you what skin care ingredients to avoid while pregnant or breastfeeding. The unavoidable truth is that the list of things to not use because of actual evidence of badness (or any lack of evidence that something is safe) is rather long, and makes picking out skin care somewhat tough while pregnant. So, really what most people want is a list of safe skin care products for pregnancy and nursing.

Add in wanting to continue fighting aging (because let's face it, most of us are over 30 while pregnant rather than in our early 20s)... and.... our options have dramatically shrunk.

First, a quick little review of what I think should be included in everyone's skin care routine and any modifications for pregnancy.

1. Gentle Cleansing: Pick a cleanser that removes all of your makeup (especially in the eye area, it's amazing how much eye liner and mascara can be left behind and look horrible), rinses off easily and leaves your skin non-irritated with no redness or after wash tightness.

2. Exfoliation: Usually done either physically (with a scrub or wash cloth or even a BuffPuf) or chemically. In my usual life I prefer chemical since it is more predictable and my skin can tolerate it well. However since the hydroxy acids are a no-go during pregnancy I've opted for physical exfoliation. This means a few times a week I'll use a scrub (I prefer to do this in the shower for easy rinsing, my current favorite is Your Best Face's Prep) and in between I simply make sure I scrub my face a little bit more with my washcloth.

3. Moisturization: The mythical glowy complexion of pregnancy can be achieved (I think I had it for a few weeks somewhere around week 24), and one of the keys is moisture! Keeping your skin nice and plump helps with minimizing any signs of aging as well, even if the effects are temporary. My favorite ingredient in a moisturizer is Hyaluronic Acid (aka- Sodium Hyaluronate) since as a humectant it attracts and keeps moisture in the skin rather than sealing it in (and looking greasy) like an emollient. I love emollients on my body though. Just not on my t-zone.

4. Sun Protection: This is always important. At a bare minimum I think everyone needs a SPF 15 with broad spectrum UVA and UVB coverage, SPF 30 is even better if you can get it. I do not think that you should be looking to your makeup for SPF (chances are you're not going to use the huge amount of foundation or powder to obtain that rating, if your product has SPF in it just consider this a little added bonus). I think you need to have your sunscreen in your daily moisturizer or a separate sunscreen product. Note that during pregnancy with your hormones run amok you are at risk of developing the dreaded "mask of pregnancy", Melasma. I'll be featuring a full post about this (along with the recs of a few dermatologists on how to deal with it) in a few weeks, but your main defense against it is sunscreen. So slather up!

So, I'm sure if you read my blog regularly you recognize my anti-aging checklist. It lists the ingredient categories that I like to include in every anti-aging routine (not necessarily in 1 product). My ideal is to have the routine above, to have peptides and anti-oxidants +/- hydroxy acids in a moisturizer, sunscreen in my day time moisturizer, and then to add in retinoids as a concentrated product that I can then use as my skin tolerates (my skin is usually a bit sensitive to retinoids, I usually end up at every other night). Obviously this can't happen with all of the ingredients to avoid.

So, by the time we take into account what to avoid, the anti-aging checklist turns into the image on the bottom. We're still allowed peptides and anti-oxidants, but retinoids are all a big no-no and the hydroxy acids are typically avoided, especially if you're erring on the conservative side like me. Yes, it sucks to not be able to use a retinoid, but it's only for 9 months so not a big deal. It's the hydroxy acid avoidance that is actually much more annoying. Do you know how hard it is to avoid hydroxy acids?? They like to pop up everywhere. Throw in avoiding all of the other ingredients (especially those skin whiteners) and suddenly there aren't a lot of options.

So, what have I found that works with this? Some of these were old stand-bys that I like to keep on hand to use in between product testings, and some of them were actually things that I tested. The first products in each category are the ones I actually used while pregnant, then I listed a few that I've used in the past and after checking ingredient lists I found they would have worked too.

Cleanser
Olay Foaming Face Wash: Honestly, this one contains citric acid, an AHA, but I missed it on the ingredient list. It's basically the last ingredient (leading me to believe it is there to balance the pH) and therefore in super low amounts. Plus, you wash this off immediately. I used this in my third trimester, I'm trying not to feel guilty.
Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser
Also Works:
Cetaphil Cleanser
Purpose Gentle Cleansing Wash
Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser

Nightly/Treatment Moisturizer
StriVectin SD
Elizabeth Intervene Stress Recovery Night Cream (This product has been reformulated, my box didn't have a retinoid listed but it does contain this ingredient now. Check your box, but this is no longer safe!)
Your Best Face Control
Also Works:
Neutrogena Light Night Cream

Eye Cream
Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller
Elizabeth Arden Intervene Eye Cream
Your Best Face Refresh Eye Cream
Also Works:
Neutrogena Ageless Restoratives Anti-Oxidant Eye Cream: I haven't used this one before but I really wanted another eye cream to recommend and this one fits the bill

Day Moisturizer with SPF
Olay Regenerist UV Defense Regenerating Lotion SPF 50
Aveeno Ageless Vitality, SPF 30
Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15
Also Works:
Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture SPF 15

What to do with Blemishes?
So... What are your favorite topical ingredients to treat blemishes? Because it sure seems like all of mine (Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic acid) were both on that list of no-no ingredients. Just try finding an acne treatment that doesn't contain either of those or a hydroxy acid. Pretty much impossible. A reader asked me about Witch Hazel the other day, and that is safe in pregnancy, so that is an option if it doesn't try you out like crazy (like it does me, so I avoid it like the plague).

So.... those hormone induced bumps... you pretty much need to wait them out. To help things along I did do some warm compresses, I did have a facial and let my esthetician do some extractions, and I tried to keep my pores as cleaned out as I could. So, exfoliation, I used my Clarisonic every day and did some masking. Especially during the month that blemishes were a problem for me, I was using a clay containing mask to help suck up all the nastiness about 2-3 times a week (I love the Borghese Fango Mask or the Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask, which might be the best $3 you'll ever spend).
